Make a servlet as a web service

hi, is there a way to make a servlet, which display some data on browser as a
web service and consume this by a client (oder servlet)? Normaly web services has a method which operate inside
the web service class and do something. In case of my servlet i try to declare
doGet as a serice method and i think it is not possible to do it. When i try to
create a service like this i get wscompile error.
Please take a look also on my topic here, which show the
error message and some more detail about my problem:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=694666&tstart=0
thanks at advance

Hi,
I'm not familiar with ejb and if you are asking, am i able to create
java normal classes and compile dem, yes it is still possible and
i can create services and consume them (but as i wrote
not servlet class as service).
I dont know still, whether it is possible to make a servlet class as
service or i should change somewhat to be able
to proide service! I didnt find tutorial or samples for this case .

  • How to make a PDF form call Web service and return a static pdf for user to print?

    Hi all,
    Can anyone help me regarding the feasibility of using PDF forms for my following case?
    I would like to create a Dynamic pdf form. User only have the Acrobat reader. they can enter some information. Then have a submit button. when user click the submit button, it can call the web service with data. then Web service returns a Static PDF document based on data and the user can print it out. (and maybe save as separate pdf file)
    1. Is that possible to implement? Because I know PDF can call web service, but dont know how it handle when the webservice returns another static PDF document. could it able to handle the responds and open up in another acrobat reader?
    2. As I understand I need to have Live Cycle Designer to create a pdf  and make it Reader Enabled. So user can user reader to call webservice? am I correct?
    3. What minimum reader that user need to have? PDF reader 7 or above?
    4. I have a webservice serve the same purpose for web. But if I want the same web services can serve both web and PDF form. So, whatever client (PDF or Web)make the web service call, server returns the PDF document to client. Is that possible ? Do I need to make any changes on web service?
    5. Do I need to get any other Adobe server product? (other than Live Cycle Designer )
    Thanks a lot

    We have done a similar approach in the past and yes, it can be doable.
    1. Is that possible to implement? Because I know PDF can call web service, but dont know how it handle when the webservice returns another static PDF document. could it able to handle the responds and open up in another acrobat reader?
    Srini: We have developed a Servlet to talk to Webservice. Based on the Webservice response, the Servlet, prepares the Byte stream and sends it to Webbrowser to display as a PDF. The PDF data was submitted to Servlet in XML format.
    But if you do not want to use the above approach, then you have to use the Workbench Process.
    Submit the PDF data to a Workbench process and the inside process, execute Webservice Service with the data. Once the response is received, prepare the data XML and render a PDF with it.
    To do this, you need LiveCycle Server and Reader Extensions server component.
    2. As I understand I need to have Live Cycle Designer to create a pdf  and make it Reader Enabled. So user can user reader to call webservice? am I correct?
    Srini: If you want to use the Servlet, you can Reader extend the PDF with Acrobat.. But if you want to submit the data directly to Webservice, then you need Reader Extensions server component.
    3. What minimum reader that user need to have? PDF reader 7 or above?
    Srini: Not sure but Reader 8 and above should work.
    4. I have a webservice serve the same purpose for web. But if I want the same web services can serve both web and PDF form. So, whatever client (PDF or Web)make the web service call, server returns the PDF document to client. Is that possible ? Do I need to make any changes on web service?
    Srini: If you use the Servlet approach, then you can re-use the same webservice. But if you want to submit directly to the same webservice, you may need to change it to suit your data XML.
    5. Do I need to get any other Adobe server product? (other than Live Cycle Designer )
    Srini: If you use the Servlet approach, you do not need any server component but other approach, you need Livecycle Server and Reader Extensions server component.

  • How to make high traffic for a Web Service?

    Hi there,
    I have build a simple Web Service and I would like to test its delay under high traffic environment.
    I have also built a client that consumes the Web Service. I want to run the client about 100 times simultaneously.

  • Calling a web service from a servlet via stub: java.lang.reflect.Invocation

    Hi all, I'm developping my first web application using Apache Tomcat and Axis, using servlets, jsp and web services.

    The stack trace is longer than that, but I didn't find any hints to solve the problem.

    I have two questions:
    - Can a servlet be a web service?

  • Servlets and web services

    hi everyone, i'm new to this ... is it possible to instatiate a servlet from a web service? my need is to implement a web service which gives a method that invokes an existing servlet and sends back it's response (which by chance will be a simple serialized xml into a String).
    Thanks in advance ...
    J.

    Hi Jonny,
    You dont really want to instantiate a servlet from your web service, you want to call it (the servlet container is in charge of instantiating servlets, and providing the necessary context for the servlet to run). However calling a servlet isnt much fun as you will need the servlet context, a request dispatcher and a HttpServletResponseWrapper.
    The simplest solution, if you are really just trying to capture some XML output, would be to put the code that generates the XML into a seperate class and call it from both the servlet and your web service.

  • Web services writen in Servlet ?

    Who can tell me that servlet can write a web services? And If can, what is the software that can use to write the web services using servlet. Thanks for helping me.

    If you mean SOAP web services, yes you can, but most of the time you will expose a JavaBean or EJB using a SOAP toolkit installed into your servlet engine. The SOAP engine will be a servlet, but your web service will be a class.
    If you mean serving XML data using a servlet/jsp? yes you can, and in this case you just do it using simple Java code inside your service method(). Set the content type to "text/xml" and send a string containing the xml. This is like home-made web services, very lightweight.
    There is also another web services protocol called XML-RPC. In Java it may be implemented as a servlet (the web service engine), but again exposing some java class as the service
    Resin servlet engine (www.caucho.com) is an awsome product, free for development, $500 for production server, that includes the most simple and trouble free implementation of xml web services, using a propietary protocol.

  • Fastest way to call web service in same ear?

    I have a generic web service handler that I've deployed with a web-services.xml
    file. I don't have a schema or wsdl. I'm going to have a servlet that will recieve
    legacy messages (not SOAP format) and build a SOAP message from that. I will
    then need to call the web service that I've built.
    What I need to know is how to make that call from the servlet to the web service
    to be reasonably efficient. I could just open a HTTP connection to it, but I'd
    like to keep that as a last resort, seeing as the client and server are in the
    same ear. I believe there's some kind of ability to build a proxy for web services,
    but if all that does is hide an HTTP connection, then that isn't what I want.
    I believe generating the "client interface" for the web service requires a wsdl
    (someone please confirm that), which I do not have. Besides, I think the client
    interface just hides an HTTP connection.

    Hi Paul,
              This question seems to be generic to any J2EE app bean that calls
              into web-services, and I'm not sure how to answer it.
              I suggest posting your question to the webservice newsgroup,

  • Web Service model vs JavaBean Model

    Hi there,
    My business logic is made with EJBs ... and now i'd like to know the pros and cons between working with the javabean model or make available my Ejbs as Web service and use the webservice model ?
    Regards,
    Frantz

    Hi Frantz,
    Using EJB:
    The business functions are provided in the form of an Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) application where the business logic is implemented through a stateless session bean and the persistence through a CMP-based entity bean.
    In order to use the existing functions in the Web Dynpro application, we will import a model that facilitates their usage. The JavaBean importer is used to import the model. Strictly speaking, it would be possible to import a session bean using the JavaBean importer. The result would be a model class without any properties. Since you can only bind properties, not methods, to UI elements, this would not make sense. Thus, we will have to implement a command bean in the form of an intermediate layer, which serves as the input for the JavaBean import and provides the necessary properties.

  • Web-services.xml: cannot set "charset" attribute for alternative encoding

    Hi,
    the definition of the charset attribute in tag web-service in a web-services.xml

    Sample:
    Before deployment I defined:
    <web-service charset="ISO-8859-1" useSOAP12="false" targetNamespace="http://www.itpearls.com/unity/SubscriberData"
    name="WebSubscriberDataCollector" style="rpc" uri="/WebSubscriberDataCollector">

    <web-service jmsUri="ISO-8859-1" useSOAP12="false" exposeWSDL="true" targetNamespace="http://www.itpearls.com/unity/SubscriberData"
    name="WebSubscriberDataCollector" style="rpc" uri="/WebSubscriberDataCollector">
    So the value "ISO-8859-1" changed his master :-(

    Hi Neal
    my server's locale is not en_US. The locale command delivers:
    $ locale

    LC_MESSAGES="de_CH.ISO8859-1"
    LC_ALL=de_CH.ISO8859-1
    but the Weblogic Server remains stubborn on all possibilities according to http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/webserv/i18n.html#1069538
    and keeps complaining:
    java.io.CharConversionException: Malformed UTF-8 char -- is an XML encoding declaration
    missing?
    My analysis: The Weblogic server seems to expect a UTF-8 compliant stream (due
    to the current user.language property set to "de") regardless of the chosen configuration
    possibilities proposed on the above mentioned link page.
    Q: is this bug related to CR105388 on http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/notes/issues.html

    <Oct 7, 2003 11:46:05 AM MEST> <Warning> <Management> <BEA-141087> <Unrecognized
    property: webservice.i18n.charset.>
    which results in the above stack trace when invoking on the web service.
    I still need a workaround within weblogic server. I cannot change the
    Solaris
    server's locale settings.
    Thanks for an comments

    Hi Manfred,
    There is a typo in code. But this should NOT affect any functionality
    (charset attribute is working). Please contact support for a patch.

    Hi,
    the definition of the charset attribute in tag web-service in aweb-services.xml
    descriptor gets lost, when deploying a web-service.
    Sample:
    Before deployment I defined:
    <web-service charset="ISO-8859-1" useSOAP12="false"
    targetNamespace="http://www.itpearls.com/unity/SubscriberData"
    name="WebSubscriberDataCollector" style="rpc"uri="/WebSubscriberDataCollector">
    After deployment the console states:
    <web-service jmsUri="ISO-8859-1" useSOAP12="false" exposeWSDL="true"
    targetNamespace="http://www.itpearls.com/unity/SubscriberData"
    name="WebSubscriberDataCollector" style="rpc"uri="/WebSubscriberDataCollector">
    So the value "ISO-8859-1" changed his master :-(
    I consider this a bug. Is there a workaround for the charset definitionof
    an
    individual web-service?
    Thanks for an comments

  • How to access web service from Oracle ?

    Database version: Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0
    I am trying to make a call to a web service through a procedure/function...
    I tried to use
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE Call_Rest_Webservice
    AS
      t_Http_Req Utl_Http.Req;
      t_Http_Resp Utl_Http.Resp;

      t_Start_Pos INTEGER := 1;
      t_Output VARCHAR2(2000);
    BEGIN
      /*Construct the information you want to send to the webservice.
      Normally this would be in a xml structure. But for a REST-
      webservice this is not mandatory. The webservice i needed to
      call excepts plain test.*/
      t_Request_Body := 'the data you want to send to the webservice';
      /*Telling Oracle where the webservice can be found, what kind of request is made
      and the version of the HTTP*/
      t_Http_Req := Utl_Http.Begin_Request('**webservice address**',
                                           'GET',
                                           'HTTP/1.1');
      /*In my case the webservice used authentication with a username an password
      that was provided to me. You can skip this line if it's a public webservice.*/
      --Utl_Http.Set_Authentication(t_Http_Req, 'username', 'password');
      /*Describe in the request-header what kind of data is send*/
      Utl_Http.Set_Header(t_Http_Req, 'Content-Type', 'text/xml charset=UTF-8');
      /*Describe in the request-header the lengt of the data*/
      Utl_Http.Set_Header(t_Http_Req, 'Content-Length', Length(t_Request_Body));
      /*Put the data in de body of the request*/
      Utl_Http.Write_Text(t_Http_Req, t_Request_Body);
      /*make the actual request to the webservice en catch the responce in a
      variable*/
      t_Http_Resp := Utl_Http.Get_Response(t_Http_Req);
      /*Read the body of the response, so you can find out if the information was
        received ok by the webservice.
        Go to the documentation of the webservice for what kind of responce you
        should expect. In my case it was:
        <responce>
          <status>ok</status>
        </responce>
      Utl_Http.Read_Text(t_Http_Resp, t_Respond);
      /*Some closing?1 Releasing some memory, i think....*/
      Utl_Http.End_Response(t_Http_Resp);
    END;But it gave me ORA-29272: HTTP request failed
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.UTL_HTTP", line 1029
    ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
    But I can link to the web server by going to **webservice address** through my browser.
    Is there any ACL should be open in order to have this capability? I asked my DBA but she asked me I will need to give her username/password/ip in order to open an ACL...
    however there is no username/password required while visiting the web service...
    Any help would be highly appreciated..
    Thanks,

So it could be a firewall on my database side that needs to be open in order to visit the hostserver?The "web browser" code (your PL/SQL code using UTL_HTTP) runs on the Oracle database server. It needs the same type of network access that your browser on your PC enjoys. (firewalls opened, proxy authentication if required, etc).
    On 11g. Not on 10g.I saw the example code you post through the link you provided... will those only work on 11g?
    If it can work on 10g, what package or what steps I need to follow in order to have that working on me?The code I've posted will work on both versions. My comment was regards to ACLs. No ACLs existed on 10g. So you only need execute privs on the relevant packages (e.g. UTL_HTTP, etc).
    ACLs were introduced with 11g - so on 11g you also need the DBA to create an ACL for you that will allow UTL_HTTP access to the network.

    This is fixed now. Someone had defined a Servlet for the web service in web.xml that was preventing the EJB container to kick in.

  • Invoking Web service from iProc Workflow Notification,OAF Changes?

    I have a Requirement to Digitally sign the Requisition before the requisition is finally approved. We have a role in iProcurement, 'Certifying Official' , who would be the final approver. When the 'Certifying Official' receives the notification and clicks the 'Approve' button , we make a call to a web service to get the Digital signature and display a new page with the Requisition information back to the user. The user can choose to either save or cancel the Signature , if they save the signature we will display a confirmation page and comeback to the workflow process .
    I was wondering what a better approach would be
    1) Cusomize the OA Framework (Extend the controller) notification page and call the web service to digitally sign the Requisition and forward the user to a new page. Based on the user selection, I will have to re-direct to the new page or comeback and execute the workflow.
    2) Customize Oracle workflow. If choose the workflow route, I was wondering If i would be able to display new pages based on the user action.
    3) Have a link on the Notification page.
    Thanks

    You can use either of these two options. Even with using option 2 you have to extend the controller to fetch the nextPage from the workflow using appropriate API's. So better use the first option by extending the controller, call the webservice and forward to the required page.
