Make anchored graphics frames act as containers

If I choose Object/Anchored Object/Insert and make the inserted frame a graphics frame (with above line positioning), it doesn't act as a container. That is, if I put a graphic into the frame or create one with the drawing tools -- say a line diagram -- and then make edits to surrounding text that causes the text to move up or down, the *frame* moves with the text it's anchored to, but the graphics inside it *don't* -- with enough editing, they could move right outside the frame, like ghosts passing thro' walls. Since almost every time I want to put a graphic onto the page it bears some specific relationship to the local text, this behavior is unhelpful, to say the least.
I can't figure out what the point of graphics frames that don't hold their contents in place could be, so I wonder if this is a bug. If so, please fix it. But if ID is behaving as intended, please add the option to preserve the position of graphics inside the frame *relative to the frame boundaries* (as opposed to relative the page boundaries).
Thanks.
PS: I did try to group the frame with a line diagram inside it but that seems impossible. I also know you can paste graphics into body text directly -- I watched AMC's video at Adobe -- but when the graphic in question has different pieces that relate to specific words above or below it, you really can't build it off-site then paste it in -- especially if the result of doing that limits your options for adjustments.

I believe we've covered this issue thoroughly. There's nothing wrong with your intention, but there is something missing about the containership behavior of ID's anchored frames that works fine in FM.
I think it's a bug. Others may think it's a personal wish that isn't supported. My thinking is that ID's frame objects are already packed with smarts about content type and fitting abilities, that the developers simply overlooked providing the ability to add new objects freely into a frame that's already got content (like FM can.)
Apparently designers don't encounter this need anywhere nearly as often as those who author annotated documents in Word, FM, or other similar tools that permit working in the isolated environment of a frame - adding, removing, resizing, rearranging text objects and graphic objects at will - as if it were a blank page environment. So, there have been few reports of problems in this area.
The main reliable anchored-frame solution for this particular problem is to create and revise the content outside of any frame, then group, select, and copy the composite object and paste it at the cursor insertion point, or save it as a separate ID file and place it as an anchored object.
Perhaps you've already explored using an unstroked table for this particular need. The baselines of text in your example seem to be aligned across the horizontal rows, and the divider lines also seem aligned on horizontal rows. The divider lines could be created by several means - underlines in cells, graphic lines in anchored frames in cells, or horizontal cell rulings.
The whole arrangement requires painstaking attention no matter how it's constructed, so the fussiness of working with a table wouldn't seem to add something that might not be needed with a different method. Because tables can break across frames, you'd need to set all rows to keep together.
Again, I strongly suggest formally reporting this quirk as a bug to be fixed and/or a feature request.

Peter

    I copied text & paisted it and then draged the 3 photos from the file...then clicked on the photo then clicked the inline boxon tool bar nexed to floating one and that is how I did it
    I do not know what you mean "cut & paist"  how do I get the photo in from my picter folder if I do not drag it to the page in Pages?
    I went to my photo folder and copied a photo and paisted the photo on the top left part of the page and it went there but there was no text to the right of photo...I could crop the photo to what ever size but no text to the right of photo...
    This is just too big of a mess of a program as it should be easier then this,,,I hav e 300 photos in this project and would have to re-paist them all...that is nuts...
    I see the button to the right of inline and floating that has 6 [lace to have the photo but the text does not float around the photo...
    If this is what your talking about this very little freedom in my page layout as I need it to let me place it where I need it to be and the wrap the text...
    There has to be an easier way to get my books ready for other formats other that Apple's iPad...iBooks Author was way eisier to make ready for iTunes...Love that program!!!
    Want my books for sale on all the other formats and was told by Apple Pages whould do it...

  • Anchored graphics in margin intruding into text column

    I am creating what is basically a textbook chapter, two columns of text and a wide margin away from the spine. I am positioning some notes in the margin, but also some graphics. Some of the graphics need to be big enough that they intrude into the text column and the text needs to wrap around them. Have done this manually and happy with the results, but would like to have at least some of these graphics anchored to the text. Learning to do this was a long and painful process, and I thought I should document my findings, and ask for any suggestions for improvement.
    I found the two following posts of particular use:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/wrapping-text-around-an-anchored-object.php
    http://blogs.adobe.com/indesignchannel/2007/11/anchored_frames_productivity_s.html
    However, the free tool mentioned in the last post is no longer available.
    Here is what I did.
    First, I set up a couple of keyboard shortcuts.
    Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Text and Tables > Insert Anchored Object/Go to Anchor Marker > Alt+Shift+I
    Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Object Menu > Fitting: Fit Frame to Content > Alt+Shift+F
    Next, I set up defaults for inserting anchored objects. Note that these preferences are saved in the file, and not in the Preferences.
    (make sure nothing is selected) Object > Anchored Object > Insert (Defaults) > Leave defaults except:
    - Object Style: SAR Topics Anchored Graphic (or whatever Object Style you wish; mine includes a word-wrap)
    - Position: Custom
       - Relative to Spine
       - Anchored Object  Reference point: top-left and top-right
       - Anchored Position  Reference Point: mid-left and mid-right
       - X Relative To: Page Edge X Offset -3p0
       - Y Relative to: Line (baseline) Offset 2p0 (needed as anchored position ignores the wordwrap when you enlarge the frame to fit objects that intrude into the text frame)
       - Check “Keep Within Top/Bottom Column Boundaries”
    I suggest as you are trying this, doing the following until at least you're sure that things are working correctly:
    - To view the anchor markers in the text, choose Type > Show Hidden Characters.
    - To view a dashed line from an anchor marker to its associated custom-positioned object, select the object and choose View > Extras > Show Text Threads. The thread extends from the anchor marker to the current proxy point for the anchored object.
    Place your text cursor where you want your anchored graphic to anchor.
    Press Alt+Shift+I.
    A default 6p0 x 6p0 frame should appear in the margin.
    Click on the graphic you wish to put into the anchored frame. Right-click and copy.
    Select the frame in the margin.  Right-click and "paste into."
    Press Alt-Shift-F and this will fit the frame to the graphic.
    This seems to be a reasonably fast and effective workflow.
    If anyone has any suggestions for improvement, please let me know.
    I do have one problem: when I was playing around with this, InDesign crashed, and the file I was trying to do this on is now corrupted and my Alt+Shift+F won't work; the frame won't resize to fit the graphic. I tried trashing my preferences, but then found out the Insert Anchored Object defaults are stored in the file on which I was working, not the actual two InDesign preferences files.

    Luckily I had a recent backup of my file so restored it and got rid of the corruption I mentioned above.
    Ran into another apparently unsurmountable problem, as described below, and have abandoned anchored graphics for this project.
    If you have two columns on a left page, where the margin is on the far left, anchored objects with wordrap don't work if your anchor is in the second column. That's because ALL of the text in the left column is "before" the anchor, and ignores the anchored object's wordwrap.
    Until this is fixed, I'm abandoning anchored graphics and will place them all manually.

  • Positioning anchored graphic outside of table

    I have a single-cell table with a small graphic that is anchored so that it is positioned to the left of the table and is particially in the margin area. The reason that the graphic can't be in a table cell is because it has to jut into the margin, past the text frame.
    The table is inserted periodically throughout several documents. The lines of text in the table can vary -- sometimes it will have 1, 2, 3 lines of text in the cell.
    I need to have the anchored graphic centered vertically to the left of the text in the cell -- the "y" distance for the anchored graphic varies according to the number of lines in the table cell. Is there a way to automatically center the graphic so that it doesn't need to be manually positioned for each table?

    Make that frame the height of your cell and center its contents vertically. .. Oh wait, your row heights may be different, so you still have to resize the anchored frame. Anchor the frame into a cell that has its own contents vertically centered?
    Perhaps there is an easier way. Re-reading from the top, you state "The reason that the graphic can't be in a table cell is because it has to jut into the margin, past the text frame." Well, a table can jut out into the margin at the right, if it is wider than the text frame -- a flaw/oversight/"feature" that has been put to good use for creating straddling headlines over two columns.
    Let me put this question to you: what happens if you (a) insert a new column to the left of your table to put the graphic in, thus making the table too wide, and then (b) **Sanity Warning! Untested Claim Follows** set the paragraph of the table to right alignment?

  • Deleting Graphic Frames

    Hello everybody,
    I have this case...
    I'm working in a long project with IDCS5, creating a medical directory using a old version of the directory. The problem is... The old version is in PDF. So, I convert (in packages, the pdf file has, at least, 1400 pages) the PDF file in INDD file, but in packages of 50 pages per file. At the moment, all okay. But this is the big problem:
    The directory has a specie of features signals in front of names of the doctors or providers. And this signals get shuffled and randomized in the columns of each page.
    My procedure to follow is: 1. re-adjust the document / 2. create new paragraph styles and character styles / 3. Erase all the signals.
    The last step is the highest problem of this theme. Deleting one per one is very tricky.
    Does anyone know how to simplify this work? does exist an script that can delete the graphic frames with the pictures inside?
    My apologize for make this post longer... but I need to expose my case to make it easy to understand.
    Oh... and I'm sorry if my english writing is not the right... I'm doing my best. =)

    Oh, wait, you don't have graphics. Because you have empty frames without graphics.
    Do you just want to get rid of all rectangles?
    These are anchored frames, right? Then:
    app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().rectangles.everyItem().remove();
    Otherwise:
    app.activeDocument.rectangles.everyItem().remove();

  • Inconsistent space after graphic frames

    Hi,
    I'm trying to create a consistent-looking manual, where space after imported graphics is consistent. Currently, that is not proving to be easy. For example, look at the difference between the space after the first and second graphics below (the first is not what I want; the second is):
    All the text paragraph formats have identical space before and after
    All the graphics frames use exactly the same Object style
    All the graphics frames are in a paragraph style named "Anchor" that has 0pt above and 6pt below (obviously, the 6pt below is not 'sticking' for some reason)
    So, is this a grid problem, or what? Align to Grid is set to None in the "Anchor" para style. I'm not (consciously) using the baseline grid in my manual.

    can be sooo many things depending on your styles, setup, wrap, etc...
    but a quick fix: anchor the graphic on a new para, adjust the paragraphs (your lines of text as u have it) spacing (before and after)  to more (twice more) then the leading.
    your approach to this project is not ideal but hopefully this advice sorts you out.

  • Can you make a composition widget act like an accordion widget?

    Is it possible to make a composition widget act like an accordion widget? The reason I ask is because the styling that I can do inside of a composition widget is much more than that of a accordion widget which is just a simple text frame, makes it impossible to add images/icons where I would like to. The only work around to this is to make a .psd file with my states already predefined in it, however If I have to resize the widget for any reason I then have to go and edit the psd file vs just simple moving the items in muse.

    Hi
    How exactly you are trying to style the text or image ?
    You can insert any object or widget in accordion , add image or draw a rectangle with different states defined. You can resize while placing the image etc.
    If this is not you are looking for , then please elaborate as what specific changes you are looking for the object in accordion.
    Composition and Accordion , both are different and works differently but you can use accordion itself and make the changes to text or image anything inserted in the container.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • How to make a modal frame?

    Hello!
    My problem is quite simple, but I don't know how to make some MODAL frames (JFrame I mean). In my application, the user can open a same frame even if this frame is already opened and that's not really good.
    So, I want the user to close the frame before opening another one.
    Can anyone explain me how to do that?

    Generally your actionListener will be an internal class of your main frame class. Usually an anonymous internal class. That means it can act on variables in the frame (which is the sensible place to keep the flags).
    Something like:
    class Class1 extends JDesktop {
    boolean itsOpen = false;
    openAction.setActionListener(new ActionListener(){
      public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
        if(!itsOpen) {
           itsOpen = true;
           openAction.setEnabled(false);
           MyInternalFrame newFrame = new MyInternalFrame(Class1.this, ....);
           add(newFrame);
       });You do need some way for the internal frame to act on the variables in the main frame. There are various ways of achieving this.
    If we're dealing with a genuine InternalFrame there's a special InternalFrameListener (?) which allows your main frame to listen for the window closing. You can use this instead of hacking the dispose method.
    If you're main frame is a JDeskTop then you can use getDesktop() in your internal frame to access it, then cast the result to the real class of your desktop.
    Our you can simply add a pointer to your class1 to the contructor of your internal frame class.
    You could even get clever and create your own listener system.

  • Graphic Frames Corrupted When Exporting to PDF

    I'm trying to figure out what is happening to random graphic frames in my InDesign document.  I'm working in a 68 page document.  I exported to PDF using the lo-res no bleed setting.  The PDF exported fine but when I went back to my InDesign doc, some of my graphic frames had changed to blank white frames.  The links still appeared on the links panel but it showed them as on the pasteboard.  When I clicked the PB link to view the object, it zoomed in to a tiny object in the gutter of the spread.  When I tried to enlarge the object, I got an error saying the object would leave the pasteboard.  I then looked in the control panel and all the coordinates and measuremends said NaN.  I'm working with InDesign CS 5.5 version 7.5.3 on OS X Lion version 10.7.3.  The frames contained either placed PSD files or placed PDF files.  It seems to have affected random frames on various pages.  I've spent 3 hours searching Google and these forums but haven't found a similar post.  This is a brand new system that has been in production for less than two weeks.  I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Jack

    I stupidly started trying to figure out what was going on rather than immediately doing a save as and within about 3 minutes InDesign crashed. When I relaunched and reopened my document, not only were my graphic frames still messed up but all of the content on about 5 other pages were completely gone, frames and all. This is the weirdest thing that I've ever seen in InDesign. I understand the concept of NaN. I just mentioned it because it seemed like part of the problem. Thanks for your reply.  What makes this even more interesting is that this isn't the first time that I've seen this. About 6 months ago, I saw the same issue happen to another user on another machine. At that time we couldn't really track down any details because the document was last accessed at the end of the day on a Friday and we didn't figure it out until Monday morning. The only thing that the two workstations have in common is that the documents and resources were stored on the same server. Could it be an issue with using InDesign files stored remotely vs locally?

  • Text disappears when graphics frame is placed on top of it.

    Hello,
    When I try to substitute a large cap in a text frame with a graphics frame in ID CS4, the text disappears.
    I have been able to do this successfully in the past, but not with this particular text frame.
    Please see screenshots.
    Can someone please help?
    Thanks for your consideration,
    cobaltgreen

    That can't be the whole story. The image you posted indicates that if text wrap is applied, the offset is 0 (if it was anything else it would show when the frame is selected, as it is in the screen shot).
    Normally you'd actually do this with text wrap and it would push the text to the right (and re-wrap the lines) in the first few lines when the image frame was put into position, but you've done something else we can't see to make that notch.

  • Graphics Frames

    I am having a hell of a time working with graphics frames. I have two problems:
    1) How do I create call-outs in a graphics frame that stay within the frame and can be grouped with the primary graphic in the frame (i.e., a screenshot).
    2) Sometimes I use text boxes within graphics frames and want to group the text box and graphics frame so they behave as one object. Sometimes I can do this and sometimes I cannot. What trick is there to doing this?
    Thanks.

    HI, Tony:
    This is one of the most maddening aspects of InDesign. When you create a grouped object outside of an anchored frame and paste it into a selected anchored frame - for example a text frame and a graphic object - you can edit the text in the the text frame, and if I recall correctly, you can select the text frame or graphic with the Direct-Selection tool (the white arrow), and move them within the anchored frame, but you can't paste another object into the anchored frame without replacing those already present. You need to either cut the group from the anchored frame and paste it outside the anchored frame, then add objects to, or subtract objects from the group, regroup, and paste that into the anchored frame.
    Please add your own formal request to those already at Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form.

  • Set Default Graphics frame when Placing graphic ?

    Hi,
    I've got a default graphics frame set up with Stroke, etc. It works fine if I make a new frame, but I would like it to be applied when I use the Place command as well.
    Can't seem to figure out how to do this...
    Thank you....

    I don't know whether to call it a bug or a "feature" in the sense that it's coded that way and been around forever without getting changed, rather than being an uninteded consequence of some other change, but it's a pain in the rear end for sure. My suspicion is that all automatically generated frames are based on the original frame code from version 1 which obviously predates object styles.
    Since day one any frame drawn with a frame tool has had no stroke or fill as a hard-coded default (despite what you might have read in the documentation). Before object styles I don't believe you could pre-assign a stroke or fill to a frame drawn with the text tool, either.

  • Need direction on how to make motion graphics -AF CS5

    I didn’t know how to word the header for my question so I’ll try to clarify it here. I’m new to AF so please bear with me. In the Adobe tutorial at the link below, he animates a flower. The flower is in front of a colored background and there are some added text that animate as well. I understand about layers but my question is, can I make a graphic like the one in the tutorial in Photoshop CS5 and import it into AF? I just ordered a copy of PS CS5 and have not gotten a chance to work with PS. When I searched the net about my question, I found many links describing how to make web graphics. Would I be making the same thing and saving them not as a web graphic? If I can make something similar to the flower in the tutorial, then I can go from there. I guess what is confusing for me is that the background and flower assets are mp4 (mpeg) video. I thought it would be two graphics in 2 layers, plus additional text as more layers. http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-after-effects-cs5/gs05-working-with-layers/

    Thank you Kevin.  I'll kinda figured that would be the be the steps but wasn't real sure. Once I get going in PS, I'll better understand how to do things.
    Wow, lots to learn.

  • How to Apply a Graphic Element's "href" Attribute Value on a Graphic Frame

    I have a graphic frame, which I wish to fill with a graphic image. The graphic frame appears as an element in the Structure, as it has a tag attached, and that element has a legitimate "href" as a full path to a graphic file. In UI mode, I have to drag that element onto the graphic frame in order for the graphic frame to be filled with the graphic file. How do I perform the same action in JavaScript?
    TIA
    mlavie

    I thought I should provide an explanation for what I meant:
    I am aware, of course, of how to use "Place". The issue here is that I have a Page that is a template, which includes a Graphic Frame. I want to open the page, and then update the Graphic Frame element's "href" tag with the path of a graphic file, and have that file then appear in the Graphics Frame. By default, InDesign does not redraw the Graphics Frame when you change the value for the "href" attribute - you need to drag the parent element onto the Graphics Frame.
    TIA
