Positioning anchored graphic outside of table

I have a single-cell table with a small graphic that is anchored so that it is positioned to the left of the table and is particially in the margin area. The reason that the graphic can't be in a table cell is because it has to jut into the margin, past the text frame.
The table is inserted periodically throughout several documents. The lines of text in the table can vary -- sometimes it will have 1, 2, 3 lines of text in the cell.
I need to have the anchored graphic centered vertically to the left of the text in the cell -- the "y" distance for the anchored graphic varies according to the number of lines in the table cell. Is there a way to automatically center the graphic so that it doesn't need to be manually positioned for each table?

Make that frame the height of your cell and center its contents vertically. .. Oh wait, your row heights may be different, so you still have to resize the anchored frame. Anchor the frame into a cell that has its own contents vertically centered?
Perhaps there is an easier way. Re-reading from the top, you state "The reason that the graphic can't be in a table cell is because it has to jut into the margin, past the text frame." Well, a table can jut out into the margin at the right, if it is wider than the text frame -- a flaw/oversight/"feature" that has been put to good use for creating straddling headlines over two columns.
Let me put this question to you: what happens if you (a) insert a new column to the left of your table to put the graphic in, thus making the table too wide, and then (b) **Sanity Warning! Untested Claim Follows** set the paragraph of the table to right alignment?

  • Make anchored graphics frames act as containers

    If I choose Object/Anchored Object/Insert and make the inserted frame a graphics frame (with above line positioning), it doesn't act as a container. That is, if I put a graphic into the frame or create one with the drawing tools -- say a line diagram -- and then make edits to surrounding text that causes the text to move up or down, the *frame* moves with the text it's anchored to, but the graphics inside it *don't* -- with enough editing, they could move right outside the frame, like ghosts passing thro' walls. Since almost every time I want to put a graphic onto the page it bears some specific relationship to the local text, this behavior is unhelpful, to say the least.
    I can't figure out what the point of graphics frames that don't hold their contents in place could be, so I wonder if this is a bug. If so, please fix it. But if ID is behaving as intended, please add the option to preserve the position of graphics inside the frame *relative to the frame boundaries* (as opposed to relative the page boundaries).
    Thanks.
    PS: I did try to group the frame with a line diagram inside it but that seems impossible. I also know you can paste graphics into body text directly -- I watched AMC's video at Adobe -- but when the graphic in question has different pieces that relate to specific words above or below it, you really can't build it off-site then paste it in -- especially if the result of doing that limits your options for adjustments.

    I believe we've covered this issue thoroughly. There's nothing wrong with your intention, but there is something missing about the containership behavior of ID's anchored frames that works fine in FM.
    I think it's a bug. Others may think it's a personal wish that isn't supported. My thinking is that ID's frame objects are already packed with smarts about content type and fitting abilities, that the developers simply overlooked providing the ability to add new objects freely into a frame that's already got content (like FM can.)
    Apparently designers don't encounter this need anywhere nearly as often as those who author annotated documents in Word, FM, or other similar tools that permit working in the isolated environment of a frame - adding, removing, resizing, rearranging text objects and graphic objects at will - as if it were a blank page environment. So, there have been few reports of problems in this area.
    The main reliable anchored-frame solution for this particular problem is to create and revise the content outside of any frame, then group, select, and copy the composite object and paste it at the cursor insertion point, or save it as a separate ID file and place it as an anchored object.
    Perhaps you've already explored using an unstroked table for this particular need. The baselines of text in your example seem to be aligned across the horizontal rows, and the divider lines also seem aligned on horizontal rows. The divider lines could be created by several means - underlines in cells, graphic lines in anchored frames in cells, or horizontal cell rulings.
    The whole arrangement requires painstaking attention no matter how it's constructed, so the fussiness of working with a table wouldn't seem to add something that might not be needed with a different method. Because tables can break across frames, you'd need to set all rows to keep together.
    Again, I strongly suggest formally reporting this quirk as a bug to be fixed and/or a feature request.

  • Anchored graphics in margin intruding into text column

    I am creating what is basically a textbook chapter, two columns of text and a wide margin away from the spine. I am positioning some notes in the margin, but also some graphics. Some of the graphics need to be big enough that they intrude into the text column and the text needs to wrap around them. Have done this manually and happy with the results, but would like to have at least some of these graphics anchored to the text. Learning to do this was a long and painful process, and I thought I should document my findings, and ask for any suggestions for improvement.
    I found the two following posts of particular use:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/wrapping-text-around-an-anchored-object.php
    http://blogs.adobe.com/indesignchannel/2007/11/anchored_frames_productivity_s.html
    However, the free tool mentioned in the last post is no longer available.
    Here is what I did.
    First, I set up a couple of keyboard shortcuts.
    Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Text and Tables > Insert Anchored Object/Go to Anchor Marker > Alt+Shift+I
    Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Object Menu > Fitting: Fit Frame to Content > Alt+Shift+F
    Next, I set up defaults for inserting anchored objects. Note that these preferences are saved in the file, and not in the Preferences.
    (make sure nothing is selected) Object > Anchored Object > Insert (Defaults) > Leave defaults except:
    - Object Style: SAR Topics Anchored Graphic (or whatever Object Style you wish; mine includes a word-wrap)
    - Position: Custom
       - Relative to Spine
       - Anchored Object  Reference point: top-left and top-right
       - Anchored Position  Reference Point: mid-left and mid-right
       - X Relative To: Page Edge X Offset -3p0
       - Y Relative to: Line (baseline) Offset 2p0 (needed as anchored position ignores the wordwrap when you enlarge the frame to fit objects that intrude into the text frame)
       - Check “Keep Within Top/Bottom Column Boundaries”
    I suggest as you are trying this, doing the following until at least you're sure that things are working correctly:
    - To view the anchor markers in the text, choose Type > Show Hidden Characters.
    - To view a dashed line from an anchor marker to its associated custom-positioned object, select the object and choose View > Extras > Show Text Threads. The thread extends from the anchor marker to the current proxy point for the anchored object.
    Place your text cursor where you want your anchored graphic to anchor.
    Press Alt+Shift+I.
    A default 6p0 x 6p0 frame should appear in the margin.
    Click on the graphic you wish to put into the anchored frame. Right-click and copy.
    Select the frame in the margin.  Right-click and "paste into."
    Press Alt-Shift-F and this will fit the frame to the graphic.
    This seems to be a reasonably fast and effective workflow.
    If anyone has any suggestions for improvement, please let me know.
    I do have one problem: when I was playing around with this, InDesign crashed, and the file I was trying to do this on is now corrupted and my Alt+Shift+F won't work; the frame won't resize to fit the graphic. I tried trashing my preferences, but then found out the Insert Anchored Object defaults are stored in the file on which I was working, not the actual two InDesign preferences files.

    Luckily I had a recent backup of my file so restored it and got rid of the corruption I mentioned above.
    Ran into another apparently unsurmountable problem, as described below, and have abandoned anchored graphics for this project.
    If you have two columns on a left page, where the margin is on the far left, anchored objects with wordrap don't work if your anchor is in the second column. That's because ALL of the text in the left column is "before" the anchor, and ignores the anchored object's wordwrap.
    Until this is fixed, I'm abandoning anchored graphics and will place them all manually.

    CONSTRAINT_NAME                  POSITION COLUMN_NAME
    A_PRIMARY_KEY                           1 ID1
    A_PRIMARY_KEY                           2 ID2
    A_SAL_POSITIVE                            SALA primary key constraint can have multiple columns - the position shows the order the columns are in the primary key definition (and thus also in the pk supporting index.)
    A check constraint does not have any such ordering of the columns involved, so therefore position is null.

  • How do I use the value of a table attribute outside the table?

    I have two tables that are master detail. But it might not be so obvious to the user before he knows how the page works that they are master detail. The tables are in separate showDetailItems in a panelAccordion and what I was thinking of was to show the value of one coloum in the selected row in the master in the text in the showdetail item that contains the detail table. But I can´t find the right expression to put into the accordion. How should the expression look like to get the value of an attribute in a table for use outside the table?

    Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn´t work. The first problem is that the page turns blank when I use that expression for the text in the showDetailItem and the second problem is that I don´t seem to be able to use the master table as a partial trigger. When I click edit in the partial trigger property I can´t shuttle the master table over to be a partial trigger to the showDetailItem even if the table has an id.
    Edited by: Atlantic Viking on Apr 2, 2009 6:24 AM
    Well I figured out how to come half way. I did the following things:
    1) Created an attribute value binding to the attribute I wanted to be shown in the showDetailItem
    2) Set the text property in the showDetailItem to this attribute value like this #{binding.attributeValue}
    To solve the problem I had with the partial triggers I continued like this
    3) Gave other components on the path from the showDetailItem to the master table id´s
    4) Clicked edit on the partial trigger property on the showDetailItem and was now able to shuttle the master table over to be a partial trigger.
    But I now got an other problem which looks like a bug. At first when I enter the page it looks fine but when I change focus in the master table to another row part of the showDetailItem containing the detail table disapears. The detail table still remains and works as it should but the part containing the text I tried to set above disapears and the text in the showDetailItem containing the master gets replaced by the text that was supposed to be in the showDetailItem containing the detail table. Any suggestions how to correct this are very welcome.

  • Position of columns in a table

    Hello,
    please help me on how to set the position of columns for a table not for a alv-table at a runtime via coding.
    How can we change the positions in ABAP?
    Regards
    Beserithan

    Hi,
    I don't see any partcular method in cl_wd_table_column class for setting column position ( in ALV for class cl_salv_wd_column we have one method for this set_postion ).
    What you can do probably as a workaround is to remove all columns (remove_all_columns of cl_wd_table ) nad then add columns again in code ( new_table_column method of class cl_wd_table_column and then using add_column of cl_wd_table) in whatever order you want.
    Let's see if others can come up with some straightforward solution.

  • How to update JTable when clicking outside the table?

    Hi
    (Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't seem to see exactly how to do this from previous posts.)
    I have a JTable which sits on a jPanel which itself is part of a frame.
    When I click anywhere outside the table when I'm editing a cell in the table, how do I end the edit mode of the table (so that the cell is updated with the new contents).Currently I can only update a cell's contents during edit when hitting 'enter' or by clicking on another cell within the table.
    It seems that the following code is used in the process but I'm sure that I'm still missing something:
    if(table1.getCellEditor()!=null)
    table1.getCellEditor().stopCellEditing();
    If anyone out there knows how to do this,I'd really appreciate hearing how.
    Thanks a lot
    LGS

    Thanks for your comments but I'm still having problems.
    When I add the following code:
    table1.addFocusListener(new java.awt.event.FocusAdapter()
    public void focusLost(java.awt.event.FocusEvent evt)
    if (table1.getCellEditor() != null)
    table1.getCellEditor().stopCellEditing();
    and then try to edit my table,as soon as I double click on any cell in the table,my setValueAt method in my Table Model is being called before I even edit the cells contents. The above code is in the same method in which I actaully create table1 i.e.createTable().
    Can anyone help?

  • How to fire "table change" once click other regions outside the table erea?

    I have a JTable created with DefaultTableModel. Usually the edit behavior of table cell is like this:
    1) Select one cell, it is highlighted in blue.
    2) Double click the cell, it's made editable with white background.
    3) Two scenarios
    (a) Once finish edit, press "Enter", the cell background turns from white to blue. At the same time, the table change is "fired" .
    (b) Once finish edit, click another cell, the originall cell turns white, and the new-clicked cell is highlighted in blue. At the same time, the table change is "fired".
    4) While editing one cell, and click somewhere OUTSIDE the table area. In this case, the table change is NOT fired.
    [This cause a confusion, user sees the changed text in table cell, but actually it is not stored and will not be stored in the table.]
    So what I want to implement is: once click the region outside the table, the text in that editabe cell (where you are just editing) is stored and fired.
    Can you help me? Thanks in advance!

    sabre150 & other experts,
    [see background in my first message]
    User is still not completely satisfied with the current behavior, though "table changed" can be fired when clicking other controls(eg. buttons or checkboxes).
    If I click a panel region(instead of a particular control), the "table changed" can not be fired. However, it is expected.
    I guess the reason is:
    a panel doesn't has a focus. so when clicking panel, the focus is not "lost" to the table cell.
    Any hints?

  • [JS] CS4 How to position a graphic within a Frame

    I have a JS script that I am converting from CS3 to CS4 and I am finding that the behaviour for positioning a graphic within a frame has changed.  I have code that sets the geometric bounds of a graphic to a negitave value within the frame, within CS3 this works great.  However using the same code on CS4 to set the geometric bounds does not produce the same result.  The graphic is always placed at 0,0 and it ignores the negitive top and left values supplied.
    Does anyone know what has changed with the geometric bounds of a graphic within a recrangle frame?  How would I set the position of the graphic within the frame since setting the geometric bounds does not seem to work any longer.
    Thanks,
    Sheldon

    I have yet to determine why the behavior is different from CS3 to CS4 and how to correct the positioning within CS4.  To help explain the problem further I have included a sample script which demonstrates the problem.  I have run the script on both CS3 and CS4 and included screen shots of the results when the resulting INDD file is opened.  Could someone help explain why the position of the image is wrong in CS4 and what I can do to correct the problem?
    Here is the sample script ...
    for(i=app.documents.count()-1;i>=0;i--){app.documents.item(i).close();}
    app.textPreferences.useOpticalSize = false;
    app.textPreferences.typographersQuotes = false;

    app.pasteboardPreferences.minimumSpaceAboveAndBelow = "300p";
    app.textFramePreferences.firstBaselineOffset = FirstBaseline.ascentOffset;
    app.colorSettings.cmsSettingsPath = File("C:\\etc\\Friesens_Yearbook_Custom_Color_Settings.csf");
    app.marginPreferences.top = '24pt';
    app.marginPreferences.bottom = '48pt';
    app.marginPreferences.left = '36pt';
    app.marginPreferences.right = '36pt';
    var doc = app.documents.add();
    doc.viewPreferences.horizontalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.points;
    doc.viewPreferences.verticalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.points;
    doc.documentPreferences.pageHeight = 792;
    doc.documentPreferences.pageWidth = 612;
    doc.documentPreferences.pageOrientation = PageOrientation.portrait;
    doc.documentPreferences.pagesPerDocument = 2;
    doc.documentPreferences.facingPages = true;
    doc.sections.firstItem().continueNumbering = false;
    doc.sections.firstItem().pageNumberStart = 2;
    var pg = doc.pages.item(0);
    var frm = pg.rectangles.add();
    frm.geometricBounds = ['200.5pt','200.2pt','447.8551pt','415.5206pt'];
    try{frm.place (File('c:\\test.jpg'), false);}catch(err){};
    if(frm.graphics.count() > 0) {frm.graphics.firstItem().geometricBounds = [frm.geometricBounds[0]-147, frm.geometricBounds[1]-49, 407.04+frm.geometricBounds[0]-147, 271.68+frm.geometricBounds[1]-49];};
    var objStyle = doc.objectStyles.add();
    objStyle.enableStroke= false;
    objStyle.transparencySettings.blendingSettings.opacity = 100;
    frm.applyObjectStyle(objStyle, true, true);
    frm.rotationAngle = 59;
    doc.label = '824203.indd';
    doc.packageForPrint('c:\\test\\824203\\', true, true, true, true, true, false, '', false, false);
    for(i=app.documents.count()-1;i>=0;i--){app.documents.item(i).close();}
    The line that I highlighted is the one that adjusts the images position within its frame.  It uses a formula to determine the exact position relative to the containing frames position.  This is why you will see the calculations to determine the geometric bounds.
    Here is the result of the script using InDesign Server CS3, notice the position of the image based on the 'Direct Selection Tool' highlight area (this is the desired result):
    And, here is the result after running the script against InDesign Server CS4:
    As you can see the Image is placed at the lot left corrner of the frame which is wrong.  Any insight into the diffrences in the behavior would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Advice for placing rotated graphics in a table

    In order to help save some space, I would like to place 4 graphs in a 4 row x 2 column table and have the page in a landscape format (see attached PDF for the desired layout diagram).  What type of cell should be used for the figure titles to get the desired results: table cell, text frame, anchored frame, other?
    I tried a table cell but I do not know how to fix the row height.  Rotating the text was easy.  But it is the row height since I am making this landscape, right?  As I keep typing the figure title, the table row height just keeps growing.
    Perhaps I should not be trying to place the graphics and figure titles in a table.  My figures are wider than they are taller and that is why I want the overall page to be landscape.  I would like to do this multiple times within a book.

    Arnis Gubins wrote:
    Peter,
    My bad - you're right. I didn't check this out on FM before shooting off the answer. With FM8 & 9, it always rotates the pages automatically to the correct orientation (as far as I quickly tested). I was remembering a problem when printing envelopes and labels with FM6 where I had to always manually rotate the pages and the habit has kind of stuck in my head.
    I think the envelope template always was annoying because it assumed that the envelopes were only fed from the edge of the paper tray, so it lined up the envelope along the side. Some trays and manual feeders feed from the center, so that template's off by inches. Yes, I also remember something about the orientation being a fooler, which is why I learned to print to PDF or a sheet of used paper first, to remind me how it works.
    And yes, you remember correctly - in the Table Designer, the  Numbering option allows one to specify either Row First or Column First behaviour.
    Well, this is my bad - I had written it as the Paragraph Designer's Table Cell properties. There's good reason to cross these wired, viz. and to wit, the User Guide:
    Customize the vertical alignment of text in a cell
    1Click in the cell you want to customize.
    2Choose Format > Paragraphs > Designer to display the Paragraph Designer.
    3Choose Table Cell from the Properties pop-up menu and then choose Top, Middle, or Bottom from the Cell Vertical Alignment pop-up menu.
    4Click Apply To Selection.
    Note: The vertical alignment that you apply to a cell will persist even when you apply a different table format from the Table Designer.
    Specify the direction of autonumbering in a table
    When you insert a table, the table format determines the direction of autonumbering within cells—either across rows or down columns. This property also sets the direction of autonumbering for table footnotes.
    1Click in the table you want to change, and choose Table > Table Designer.
    2In the Basic properties of the Table Designer, choose Row First or Column First from the Numbering pop-up menu.
    3Click Apply To Selection.
    The subtle transition from the Paragraph Designer's Table Cell properties context to the Table Designer's Basic Numbering property context is pretty slippery, IMO.
    Also, the writing around the bug of persistent vertical text alignment in a cell when changing table formats, is quite sly. I've never seen this called out for a bug to be fixed, so it's probably not encountered often, if at all.
