Make hidden files visible in Finder

I have a hidden file .VBT5 apparently located in the Time Machine partition of a FW800 connected external drive that is causing problems for Virus Barrier X6. The .VBT5 was created by Virus Barrier X5 and apparently missed during it's uninstall. I used Boot Camped XP to do a search for hidden files named .VBT5 finding one on a FAT32 formatted partition on the same drive but none on the Time Machine partition.
How do I force Finder to display hidden files?

The terminal commands worked great! Thanks.
For those that haven't tried terminal commands before , a couple of tips:
After pasting and executing:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES
In order to restart Finder and see the change it was necessary to type in and execute:
killall Finder
The change will persist but executing the following commands one after the other will restore Finder to normal.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool NO
killall Finder
Thanks again leroydouglas.

  • How do I make hidden folders visible?

sorry about the basic question, but How do I make hidden folders visible?
    thanks

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
Click on the Finder in the Dock with the Control and Option keys held down and choose Relaunch. Some third-party utility software will also do this.

  • Make hidden files invisible again

Recently I had remote support (Teamviewer) from a software company, and as a result all the previously hidden files are visible (grey), and are cluttering up my file folders. I no longer wish to deal with that company. Can someone tell me the Terminal command line that makes those hidden files invisible again?
    Thanks,
    Klaus

Open the Terminal and type the following:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles 0
After doing this, log out and then log back in, or otherwise quit and relaunch the Finder.

  • Make hidden OU visible

    Hey guys,
I have a weird problem with a hidden OU. I have to select this OU as target in a third part app (Enterprise Vault). The account which I use for that has the general rights to list and to read everything within the domain and even this special OU.
It is interesting, because I only can see the OU if I tick "Advanced features" in ADUC.
I guess there is a further trigger/attribute which is causing that. I want to make the OU visible without ticking "Advanced features" so that I can hopefully select it in Enterprise Vault.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hi,
Which 'OU' do you mean? Does it an OU that you created manually? As far as I know, if we use general way to create an OU, we should see it without ticking Advanced Features.
And like System, ForeignSecurityPrincipals are not OUs, they are containers, and we should tick Advanced features to see them.
In addition, if this is an OU that you manually created, how did you hide it, did you follow the below link:

  • Apimac HideFolders malfunctioning--How to make hidden folders visible?

I used Apimac HideFolders to hide some folders on an external hard drive. At present, the folders do not appear in the Finder; but when I open HideFolders to make them visible, they are listed as "Visible." Since the "Show" option is greyed out, I look to see what happens when I click "Hide," and the Status changes from "Visible" to "Missing."
I downloaded PathFinder, and with it I can see that the files are still there on the drive.  What can I do to make them visible?  Thanks in advance.

As has been mentioned here before, they are incredibly unhelpful. Their website doesn't list a phone number and their "support page" for the app is written by someone whose first language is definitely not English.

  • How to make hidden files unhidden (normal) again?

Hi, I copied a hidden folder from my PC to my MBP. I know how to view it using Terminal however I dont want it to be a hidden folder anymore. Just a normal visible folder. Appreciate any help, cheers.

If it is indeed an directory it should not be hidden unless there is a period in front of the name. Maybe you have an exception. Where is it located? When you do a ls -al on the current directory is there a d at the starting permission string like this:
-rw------- 1 who staff 642 Feb 2 2010 .viminfo (Hidden text file)
drwx------ 3 who staff 102 May 21 13:40 Applications (Normal root directory)
Better yet run "ls -al" on the directory and post it.

  • Hidden files appear in finder but I can't see them on my desktop

I have been having this recurring issue where when I have a Finder window open, I can see several files when I click on my my desktop sidebar icon, but when I try to find them on my desktop they do not show up anywhere. What is going on? Is it something I did/didn't enable or a bug?

    Hi,
I am having this issue too. I can, for example, save a Word doc as a PDF to the desktop but it never appears. If I go back to Word it says 'do you want to replace the file of the same name?', And if I do this a couple of times it will appear.
There are quite a few similar responses online about this but no definitive answer. Anyone got one?

  • How do I not copy hidden files associated with photos

I want to put photos on my new digital picture frame. It can be plugged into a USB port and looks like a disk drive.
I select and drag the photos I want to the device, but there is a hidden file for each one that gets copied as well. The device doesn't know what to do with those files. They don't cause a problem, but do take up space.
How can I keep from copying those files?

I'd like to be able to see the hidden files in the Finder so that I (hopefully) could select them and delete them before transferring the files to my digital photo frame.
When you saw and deleted them using Terminal, were they present on your HD, or did you only look at the files already transferred to the USB photo frame device?
The hidden "._" files are "resource fork" files, and when you make hidden files visible in Finder you might find that they exist only on the USB device, having been created there by the transfer process itself - see:
*Apple Double Format Creates File Name With the Prefix '._'*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20578?viewlocale=en_US
Also take a look at [Blue Harvest|http://www.zeroonetwenty.com/blueharvest].
They don't cause a problem, but do take up space.
How much space? If not excessive, then leaving them alone would also be an option!

  • Opening hidden files

I've seen the posting on how to make hidden files visible in Finder by changing com.apple.finder and this works fine for the Finder window. However I would like to be able to open a hidden file directly from the File/Open command in one of my programs. This isn't possible as these hidden files don't show up in the open file window.
Does anyone know how to make these hidden files visible in these other windows?

Thanks for the reply. That's a pity but not disastrous, just Lion adding another step to a process.
As baltwo says, this has nothing to do with Lion.
I use Komodo when I'm developing web programs to examine Perl scripts and web pages. I wanted to have a look at the .htaccess file to see if it needed changing and found I couldn't open it from Komodo
That's odd, but perhaps should signal you that you should try a different editor.  TextWrangler, for example, can open literally anything from the Open dialog...  there's a check box to show hidden items and a menu that'll let you tell it what to allow you to select (one choice is "Everything").  I don't know how TextWrangler, and it's big brother BBEdit, compare to Komodo, but it does a great job editing all kinds of code for me.
Alternately, you could try something like this in the Terminal:
    open -a Komodo.app ~/Sites/somesite/.htaccess

  • How Do I Delete Hidden Files in Compressed Folders?

I'm working on a mac and sometimes I compress files and send them to be opened on a PC. Is there anyway to delete the hidden files that mac adds to a zip file before sending it, or disable their creation completely? I'm thinking about getting a mac at home, but this could be one of the deal breakers.
    Kevin

There are ways to make hidden files visible in the finder, but here I don't think that will help - the files you are seeing are CREATED by the finder, and you are presumably using the finder to make your zip files. So if you make these files visible and try to delete them using the finder before creating your archive they will probably just be re-created. You can delete any file manually in terminal, but I doubt you could do it within an archive.
Another solution would be to use a stand-alone application to create the zip files instead of the finder. Browsing VersionTracker I came upon "YemuZip", freeware at
    http://www.yellowmug.com/yemuzip/
Again I haven't tried it, but it claims to be able to exclude the Mac-specific files that show up on PCs.
Some of these freeware utilities are very handy - at least worth a look.

  • View hidden files in my trash

okay first off I feel like the biggest idiot. I'm transferring my data to a new imac. the songs in iTunes were duplicated so I decided to delete the songs in itunes and re-import the library. well after I deleted them I go into the trash and they are not there. At the bottom of the trash it says there are 9,717 files in the trash - I just can not see them!!! How can i view them?? please help!

what you describe sounds strange. those files should not be hidden. Regardless, you can make hidden files visible with a 3rd party utility like TinkerTool

  • How do I find hidden files/folder in the Users folder?

    Hi,
Is there any way to make certain files visible in the Users folder? I purchased a plug-in and in order for the update to correctly work, I need to find the old file (which is hidden.) I tried Spotlight but it didn't find anything.
Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. Enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
To hide hidden files substitute No for Yes in the above command line.
To use Spotlight you need to enable the search for hidden files. You need to click on the "+" button next the the Save button in the search bar of the Finder. Then select Other from the Kind drop down menu. Locate the "File Invisible" attribute from the list and check it to enable it. You can now select the option to display or not display invisible files.
Download Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it instead of Spotlight. Easy Find will find everything Spotlight doesn't find.

  • Make Invisible Cache Files Visible, If Not Then Rename Them

Disclaimer:  there is more to this than simply making the files visible with folder options, please read on
The reason I ask is because when I transfered a folder to an ftp server or a hard drive, often times it can be many megabytes larger than the size of the actual files.  On the surface this may not seem like a problem, but I've run into an actual technical problem because of Bridge's cache files:
On a website that I worked on recently, an XML file calls out image filenames from a specific folder.  I dragged the folder over to the FTP site and it overwrote the folder on the server, as intended.  But the images wouldn't appear on the website.  I figured out that the bridge cache files make an identical file of the same name, but hidden.  So when my flash site was looking for 01.jpg in a folder called 'auto', the first file that it saw was the 01.jpg cache file, which had no visual data. Because when I deleted that folder and dragged the files over individually--opposed to dragging over the folder--it worked A-O-K.  Since the files were transfered individually, the hidden files in the folder weren't copied.
So my suggestion would be to make these files visible and call them out as cache similar to .xmp files, or just alter the name structure of the cache file so when the website looks for the file, it can still find the right one.
    Thanks!

The output of the pages node is an array so the node in question is an index array with the page on question feeding into it then it feeds that value to a visibility node.

  • "Colorizing" Hidden Files

I know all about showing (and then re-hiding, if need be) hidden files. What I need to know is whether it would be possible to "colorise" them, instead of just having Finder showing them as "greyed out".
For instance, if I could only explain to Finder that I want hidden files displayed in red (rather than just greyed out), I could spare myself quite a lot of eye strain when trying to tell hidden files apart from visible ones (since the "greying-out" business doesn't exactly make hidden files stand out ...).
Thanks in advance for any replies,
    Luca

From the terminal, enter the following:
    sudo chflags nohidden ~/path/to/file
This will change the properties of file from hidden to visible, rather than simply having finder reveal a hidden file. It will no longer be greyed out. You can then
To make the file hidden again,
    sudo chflags hidden ~/path/to/file
