Make Mail Require a Subject for an Email

Hi,
Is there a way to have Mail require a Subject for an email before it can be sent?
I really hate sending off emails with no subject when I forget to type one in. But I see no setting in the Preferences for this.
Thanks,
Jeff

Not in 10.4 at the moment to test, but Mail in 10.5.8 does warn if there's no subject.

  • Variable subject for SmartForms email

    Hi All,
At my clients SAP system (ECC 5.0), we are using SmartForms for the output of documents.
In this case I am talking about invoices.
Customzing is setup to use standard SAP program RLB_INVOICE and an invoice smartform which is copy of SAP invoice, but then adjusted for my clients needs. This works perfect for quite some time now.
Since recently email was setup so these invoices can be mailed directly to the customers, but we face the problem that when invoices are sent via email, the subject is always the same.
This makes sence because it is set in the output type (mail title and texts), But we would like to make this a variable text, e.g. Invoice_1234567890 (where 1234567890 is the SAP invoice number)
Has anyone experience in doing this?
    - Is there a way to insert a variable in the subject of the email?
    - Which veriables can be chosen?
    - Is there a user-exit to overrule the Standard SAP behaviour (I could not find it)
Of couse a Z program can be created to convert the OTF to PDF and sent your own created email, but I would really like to keep using the standard SAP program.
    Thanks very much.
    Kind regards,
    Dave Verkoelen

I think OUTPUT_OPTIONS-TDCOVTITLE generate a subject in the Email.
I have tried to update that field using field symbols in the Smartform but, I was not successful.
    * Modifying in Smartform Main program
    field-symbols: <fs> type SSFCOMPOP.
    assign ('(SAPLSTXBC)SSFPO') to <fs>.
<fs>-TDCOVTITLE = 'test Title from Smartform'.
    * Modifying in FM's parameter
    field-symbols: <fs1> type SSFCOMPOP.
    assign ('(/1BCDWB/SAPLSF00000166)OUTPUT_OPTIONS') to <fs1>.
<fs1>-TDCOVTITLE = 'test Title from Smartform'.
So, I think you need to copy the RLB_INVOICE to Z and than change the title.

  • Why does Mail require "Re:" subject prefix to group conversations properly?

When the Apple Mail program (using Mavericks 10.9.1) is configured to "View:Organize by Conversation", it is necessary for the email subject line to be prefixed with "Re:" in order for the email from different senders to be grouped into the same conversation, even if the emails contain proper "In-Reply-To" header fields.  Why does the program require this subject line prefix, versus just using the In-Reply-To field values to group conversations?  Many automated systems that generate emails (e.g., web-based helpdesk systems) will send email with the proper In-Reply-To field values to associate emails for the same topic/case, but they do not use the "Re:" subject line prefix.  This seems to be a defect with the design of the Mail program to require this prefix for the conversation grouping to work properly.
Does anyone know if there is legitimate rationale for this behavior?  Does anyone know if there is a work-around for this problem (short of changing these other systems to prefix the subject line)?
    Thanks, Steve

    Hi
You asked about a recommendation for an app to paste a group of addresses into the To, Cc or Bcc fields of an email?
Our "MailShot Pro" app is the only one we know of on the App Store that creates special "group contacts" in your address book which contain all your groups email addresses, but can be used just like regular contacts from most of your favourite apps. We now have nearly 50000 people using it, and growing steadily every day.
Here is a link if you would like to know more “MailShot Pro” (itunes link).
A free version is also available if you'd like to try it out with a small nmber of contacts.
If you need any customer support just contact us at the website, we're always happy to help.

  • How do I make Mail stop keeping all my old emails?

I have just done a scan of my MacBook using Disk Inventory X to try and work out what is taking up so much space on my hard drive. Turns out I have 94GB of mail. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to get Mail to stop keeping all my old emails?

I have had a look in the time capsule.....bad news on that front, it is empty although it had been regualry updating every hour when it was connected previous (had a bit of a move around with both the office and home). This had happened before and Apple replaced the Time Capsule with a new one along with a new hardrive in the 27" iMac, I wonder if that same problem had not been resolved now seeing the Time Capsule has nothing backed up. My word this is frustrating, the hours I have spent on the phone with Apple tech and still having issues, anyway one thing at a time.
    Thanks for the help!

In NACE, select your output type and double click on the option for Mail title and Texts in the navigation area on the left side of the screen. Here you can maintain the Subject for your E-mail.

  • I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail is not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail are not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice. Yesterday, the signatures were stacking instead of switching to the one I wanted to choose.

I had this and fixed it.
I had upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures in Mail were fine. But then about a week later, I got a new computer and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff to the new machine. Upon opening Mail, I had all the correct Signature information in the Preferences>Signatures window, but nothing worked.
After lots of hunting, I found the Signature Folder. It's in:
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
Looking at my previous setup (which works) I saw in that folder two types of files: .webarchive and .siganture
Looking in my new machine's Signature folder, I saw only the .webarchive folders, not the .signature folders
Since this was literally a clone of my previous setup to a new machine, here's what I did:
    1. Quit Mail
    2. In Problem machine, go to
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
    3. Move the Signatures folder someplace safe, but out of the MailData folder
    4. Get the Signatures Folder from the working install (like a backup) and copy it to the MailData folder on the problematic machine
    5. Start Mail on the problem machine
This worked for me. I don't know why Migration Assistant didn't copy the full signature folder, but this fixed it. It worked perfectly partly because I had just backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner and the very next day set up the new machine. I don't know where Lion or earlier versions of mail stored signatures, but the absence of the .signature filetype seems to be the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • How to add text to the start of the subject for email sent to  wiki mail

When an email is sent to the group wiki email address (groupname-wiki@serverurl), I would like for the subject of the email to have \[groupname-wiki\] added to the beginning of the text. Can anyone suggest to me how to do this? What configuration file do I need to be looking at?
    Thank you.

This sort of thing can be done with procmail which is included with the SLS. However, the section for these aliases in /etc/aliases is auto-generated, and it gets reset if you mess with it. I think it's not possible to change it directly.
What you could do, though, is leave the auto-generated stuff alone, and ignore the main address of the mailing list, and put your own alias in first, that rewrites the subject line before forwarding to the main wiki alias. Then tell people to use the list that you want to have them use.
For example, two lines in /etc/aliases that you'd use:
    ================
    acmegroup: "| /usr/bin/procmail -m /opt/postfix/procmail-tag.rc {acmegroup} acmegroup-wiki"
    ### DO NOT MANUALLY EDIT THIS SECTION ###
    # This section is automatically generated
    acmegroup-wiki: , teamsserver@localhost, [email protected]
    ================
You need to learn how to write procmail code, but for this example, the tag.rc file you'd save in /opt/postfix looks like:
    http://assets.cogley.info/procmail-tag.rc

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon that is in my dock, that I know nothing about, was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted ALL my OUTLOOK emails in my inbox.  Can someone please please tell me if there is a way to get my Outlook inbox emails back OR EVEN the emails that were in my Mail app - because even tho I never use the Mail app, at least the emails would be there.
When I was trying to delete the emails in my inbox for the Mail app - I followed THESE directions.  It did in fact clear my inbox for the Mail app.  But then I went to log on to my Outlook account and EVERY SINGLE EMAIL was gone.  And not in the Deleted box.  Just gone.  Here are the directions I followed that screwed everything up.  Please help.
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors.
Uncheck "Store deleted messages on the server".
At the drop list for "Permanently erase deleted messages when", choose "Quitting Mail".
    Next...
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > General.
At "When searching all mailboxes, include results from", uncheck "Trash".
    Select All = command A

    i found out my prob!
    here is what you do.
go to the "system preferences" on your dock.
    click "software updates".
    click "installed software"
if it shows something about a recent update about "EFI UPDATE, FIRMWARE, THUNDERBOLT" or anything like that, exit out of it.
    go to mail.
    click "mail" at the top.
    click "preferences...".
find the account you are having trouble with, once you do, make sure its highlighted, then click the "-" at the bottom of the window (this will only effect that mail account, it will not effect your ical weather or not its synced thought that email account)
hit the "+" (right next to the "-") and add your accout back!
its something with that update that effected mail, i hope this works out for you, if not reply back

  • Advantages/disadvantages of MAC mail compared to Outlook (for a person with a POP serve, not cloud type email account).

Am a new Mac user after 30 years of PC.  Very important to bring over my POPserve emails with attachments.  Finally succeeded by using the Microsoft for MAC 30 day trial.  Am willing to buy the microsoft software so that my emails/attached doc files and excel spreadsheets all work.  Alternately, I could try the "drag to desk top" convert to MBox mail format that I read about as a "back door" way to get your files into Mbox format, and then buy the apple notes and numbers software.  Am concerned that the process may cause the emails and their attachments to get messed up.  So, I'm willing to continue using Outlook and the Microsoft suite for word & excel if that is the way to assure that all my documents keep their integrity.  I know the future is the 'cloud', but I have a big, 3 year project that I hope to complete in the coming year, and until then I have to keep my files organized the way they have been and it's an integrated mess of emails and attached word, PDF, and jpeg documents that only existed on my PC (and is now, thankfully, on my apple air).
I'm interested in advice from people who have experience with both MacMail and Outlook.  For the brief period I used MacMail (prior to giving up on importing my 3 year history into MacMail), I didn't see any obvious advantages of MacMail over Outlook.  Particularly since I won't be using a cloud type, access your stuff from anywhere feature, since my history is only on the laptop, I'm not sure that I'll be missing that much of the 'apple' experience if I continue to use outlook (as well as word and excel), at least until this big project is done.  It will cost me to buy notes and numbers, so maybe I should just live with being a 'microsoft slave' using an apple airbook, at least for the coming year.
Hope the question makes sense.  I got very little help from Apple techs about what to do to get my email off my PC and on to my apple macbook air. I was told by the apple tech and the trainer to just return the apple and get a refund rather than struggle with trying to get my files. I persisted with my own search and found the advice about using the 30 day trial of Microsoft for Mac and am glad I did since the emails files and associated documents have been transferred.  I'm enjoying my apple and would appreciate advise on whether to just continue with the microsoft for mac approach for the future, or whether I should buy the notes and numbers software and spend more effort getting the email and associated documents into an Mbox format.  Thanks.

I'd suggest creating a new test user account from the system preferences. Log in, open Mail, enter your .Mac settings and see how it goes.
Alternatively, you can try to reset Mail.app by renaming (for backup purposes) the following files: (This will affect your other mailboxes as well!)
    Preferences: your_name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    & Mail folder: your_name/Library/Mail/
Assuming a new Mail setup actually works, post back in case you need help on importing your old POP3 messages.
If not, I've no idea what to do... Your firewall should not affect .Mac behavior. (I got to admit, I don't particularly like Mail.app's buggy IMAP implementation.)
    Good luck!

  • HT1766 I just restored my old iphone data to my new phone. When I tried to send an email, it kept asking me for my email password. I couldn't remember it and kept trying over and over. Now email wont send and I keep getting a Cannot Send Mail:

I restored my phone data onto my new phone. When I tried to send email it asked me for my email password, which I couldn't remember. Now I keep getting an error message whenever I try to send an email. How do I reset this so it works?

Until you can enter that password it kept asking for, you won't be able to send mail. You need to go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Email Account you are referring to>SMTP server, and make changes there. If you cannot remember your email password, you will have to get in touch with your provider to be able to change it.
