Make unix executable start up when server starts up

We run a HansaWorld Enterprise Server on our OSX 10.6 server and it is a unix executable that I now start from terminal.
I've managed to make a script and added that to the Login Items for the server user account.
This works fine, but if the server needs a restart when I'm not there, I would have to give away the login credentials to other employees that shouldn't have them.
Is there anyway to make the Unix Executable or script run when the server starts up. Like the Mail-, OD-,etc- services does?

I want to run the following file:
./Unix-executable in /Applications/Folder/

Hi all,
Seeking help from experts as i am about to lose much of my hair over this issue.
Having to support a team of vido editors, one of their PowerMac G5 have this weird problem that i have no idea on how to resolve it.
Situation:
Raw video footage stored over network for all PowerMacs to access anytime.
This PM G5 viewed the folder containing a list of footage as Unix Executable Files. This apply to the whole folder containing various sub-folders where all footages are stored.
On other 2 PM G5 (within the same network), the folder have no problem showing that it's a video footage with a nice little QT icons instead of a black little box (Unix Exec).
What i did:
Ensure the network setting is setted. AppleTalk is on and everything else is standard across the 3 PM G5.
Did maintainence by performing cache clearing/disk repair/permission repair via AppleJack on the problematic PM G5.
Result:
Still the same situation as i arrived to the PM G5. Files recognized as Unix Exec on this PM G5 while other PM are ok.
Anything that i can do to help rectify the problem? The video editors needs me to clear this issue fast as they need to edit those footages by Final Cut and is unable to import those Unix Exec files.
Before i forget, i tried pulling off those files (in GBs per footage) to desktop and changed default application to Quicktime. I was able to view the footages by QT but unable to import into FCP as FCP rejected with "Unknown File Format" error message.

Just an self update on my situation.
Can't believe it is just a simple issue afterall.
Having to double check on the other Macintosh's access to the shared drive and make comparison to the problem G5, realized that all but one is using SMB to mount the volume and the problem G5 mount the volume via AFP.
Remount the volume via SMB and everything is just as normal as others.

Word Docs have become Unix Executable Files!

The subject says it. This has happened on both my wife's iMac G5, and my MacBook Pro. Some, not all, of our Word docs, (both using 2004, running OS X.4.7) have had their icons turned into a gray console, and in "Get Info" identify themselves as "Unix Executable File." When opened in Word, I get the option to open as if it were a foreign file, and typically, it opens with all formatting gone, and all kinds of bizarre characters at the beginning (and sometimes end) of the doc.
Now, I can salvage the data, it seems, but is there some way to simply undo this damage without manually going through every file?
I must say, this is exactly the kind of junk that I would expect to find on a PC. This is a stunningly bad problem, by far the worst I've experienced in almost 15 years of using Macs. I would assume that Apple is aware of this, and that they can:
1) Explain what happened.
2) Explain a quick and easy fix.
Thanks to anyone (from Apple or otherwise) who can do 1 and 2 above.

The first command I gave to you will render the directory in question, and all nested directories, inaccessible. The second command will make the diretories accessible again.
There is a possibility that there are files in this directory structure which are not owned by you. Not likely, but I must make the assumption that these could be encountered when I give such commands "in the dark" as it were. In such a case, you would see an error regarding these files, thus the warning.
You can return your directories to accessibility using the second command, regardless of errors you might encounter. If you do encounter errors, I will post a different form of the same commands that will work.
Be prepared to deal with this problem any time you transfer files from a Windows-formatted volume. This is not a Windows problem, but rather one of differences between the two file systems. If you see a file show up with the executable icon, you might want to remove the execute bit right away. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this in the GUI, so you must resort to using Terminal.
This shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just open Terminal, type this text with a traling space:
<pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">chmod a-x</pre>
then select all of the new files and drag them all into the Terminal window. This will create a rather long command line that includes the full path to every file you dragged in. Just press <RETURN>, and "POOF," no more execute bit!

How to import unix executable files into Final Cut Pro

A friend wanted me to create a Halo 3 Montage Video for him. He loaded the saved clips onto a flash drive for me but when I put it into my computer the information comes up as Unix Executable Files and I don't know how to import them into Final Cut Pro 7.0.2 or if it's even possible. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Ok. Well, I plug in the flash drive. When it opens there's a folder that says XBox360. When I click on the folder there are 9 files listed that say Data0000, Data0001 etc. The preview option shows a gray folder that says Exec on it and the only information I can find is that it's a Unix Executable File. When I click on more info option everything that pops up is what I've already told you. I tried opening it in the VLC Player but nothing played which makes me think there aren't video files on the flash drive. When I click on the file to open it the Terminal Program appears and lists basic information about the file.
Is there a program that can take these files and covert them into something that can run in Final Cut Pro? Or is that what VLC is supposed to do?

How can I restore my Microsoft Word Documents which became Unix Executable Files after my Macbook Pro Crashed?

After my MacBook Pro suddenly crashed, we had Best Buy's Geek Squad attempt to save the files. According to them, they were successful in doing so and put all of the saved files in a folder on my desktop which they labeled "Backup". The problem is, all of the files are in a Unix Executable format. When you double click on any of them, they pull up the terminal and that's it. After researching the issue and trying to grasp what was going on, I learned that you can open these files in Text Edit and sometimes find the file extension (.png .jpeg .amr .qt) that belongs at the end of the filename in order for it to be pulled up. In doing this, I had some success restoring some photos, audio files, and videos. However, no luck at all in restoring any of my Microsoft Word documents or even finding out which Unix Executables are Word documents. I've even tried to add .docx to various files just to see if I would luck out. Nope . Any help would be SO SO greatly appreciated!!!

Yes, Lion does require that you have Snow Leopard installed so you have access to the Mac App Store.

When you verified the startup disk using Disk Utility, what were the results?
Wouldn't hurt to do that again. From your admin account launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab. Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the startup disk needs repairing, boot from your install disk to make repairs > Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
While you have the DU window open, check Capacity & Available at the bottom of the window. Make sure there is a minimum of 15% free disk space.

Folder shows as Unix Executable

After transferring some avi files on my external hard drive onto a pc, the folder holding the files now show up as a unix executable (grey icon) when the external drive is plugged into my MacBook. The folder opens fine when i reconnected it onto my PC again... Could you please tell me how to change the folder so that I can open it on my MacBook again? I'm currently using Tiger 10.4.11 and am fairly new to using MacBooks so detailed instructions would be greatly, greatly appreciated

So it looks like my Mac is not reading anything in the folder at all? Under Info (when I right clicked), the file size is about 2MB... The date for that file is also really weird...?

Opening a Unix Executable File

I am a Mac newbie, switching from PC. I do embroidery digitizing and downloaded several embroidery designs in "zipped" format. When I viewed them in the Get Info dialog, they were listed as Unix Executable Files. When I tried to open one, a dialog box came up saying that I needed to choose a file to open them with. What program or helper app do I choose?

Sometimes ZIP files are made into self-expanding .exe files. When run on a PC, they will unzip without needing any unzipping software. They will not do this on a Mac, but Stuffit Expander may work with them

3rd Party Plugin problem (unix executable file)

I have a few 3rd party plugins for final cut pro, but for some reason my computer will not accept them as the file type seems to be wrong.
Does anyone happen to know how to make "unix executable (exec)" files readable, so i can install these plugins.
A work friend has an older mac (G4 tower, not an intel like mine) and the plugins work fine for him. Very frustrating!

I have tried everything. Double clicking just asked to choose application and dragging the file into the /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins/
FxPlug plugins go here: /Library/Plug-Ins/FxPlug/ didnt work either. I got an error message (-32)
Im guessing it doesnt work on my mac because its a intel. Looking at the company website, i dont think that they have released a newer version for the intels.
Think im gonna give up on this issue, but thanks for everyones help and advice. If i ever solve this problem, i will make sure i create a new post to let you all know.

If it is a brief sound, perhaps a half second in duration, it may very well be the OS checking the internal optical drive. That is part of the OS startup process which is normal. Start your MBP and put your ear next to the optical drive and see if this is the case.

I had that happen with a MacBook. It turned out that the metal case above the slot was slightly bent down.
Putting a flat blade screwdriver in the slot and gently twisting it to move the metal case up allowed it to eject. Don't put it in too far you only want to bend the case not the drive.
The case can get bent down by picking it up with your thumb pressing down on the case above the slot.

Indesign is stuck on executing start up services

Having trouble starting Indesign. It is stuck on "executing start up services" and just stays there. Tried re installing it since it had the recent update, and also tried running as admin just in case and no luck. Using Creative Cloud, dunno if that makes a difference but photoshop and illustrator boot up very quickly.

Unable to make alias of UNIX executable

I've installed an open source X-11 app using Fink, and it works fine, but it's kind of difficult to get to (buried deep in a directory structure), so I wanted to make an alias of the app in my Applications folder. Couldn't do it -- the "Make Alias" entry was not there when I right-clicked on the icon; it was grayed out in the File menu, too.
What's the problem, and how do I fix it?
I know I could make a symlink, but I want to know why alias doesn't work.

Probably it's because you don't have write permissions to the directory where the unix executable lives. Instead of using the menu item, hold down the apple & opt (or alt) keys while dragging the file - the cursor should change to the alias symbol - to another location (like the desktop) to create an alias there. I just tried it and it worked fine.
Although it would obviously be easier to drag it straight to the Applications folder since it's conveniently placed on the sidebar - I didn't think of that before.

Movie Maker won't start

I have a relatively new HP Pavilion, core I5, 16gb, Intel HD graphics. It came with Movie Maker installed, but Movie Maker won't start - says I need to make sure the PC meets minimum requirements. Say what? It came installed - I expect it to work. Now what? (I knew I should have gone Mac...)

The system at a glance looks powerful enough to run Movie Maker, however, the Intel HD graphics chip may not be powerful enough and can be causing that message. I found a Microsoft Answers thread where it is stated that you should update you Intel HD video drivers. The other option (especially if you intend to do HD video editing) would be to purchase a stronger dedicated video card.
