Making a floppy image from scratch

I am looking for a tool which can take a directory of files and a boot sector and assemble a floppy disk image (just like mkisofs).
Currently I have done this by:
-creating a filesystem on a real floppy
-installing GRUB on to it
-dding an image
-mounting the image with loopback
The problem is, I can't use the loopback method on computers other than my own (because 'only root can do that'). And I would prefer to generate a fresh image each time.
Any ideas appreciated.

Here's a cool method with flexibility:

  • Making Roll over images from photoshop layout

    Hello Everyone,
I am working on a website and I have sliced my parts of my Photoshop file.
I have saved as a html with images as well!
How would I amek a roll over image out of the buttons I made in photoshop and sliced?

Best thing you can do is delete that HTML file from Photoshop and use the slices and build the code in Dreamweaver.  You will be much better off.
The simplest solution is to save the 2 states of your button as 2 separate images then click on Insert->Image Objects->Rollover Image.  Then select your before and after image.  Just remember to upload the javascript file Dreamweaver creates during this process or it won't work online.

  • How to create a bootable OEL5.8 .iso from scratch?

Are there any instructions available about how to create a bootable .iso file, for installing OEL5.8, from scratch?
We need to build a system which is a customised version of OEL5.8; we want to add some extra RPMs and remove others. We have an older build system which does this based on OEL5.5, but the way it has been built makes this hard to upgrade. We'd like to try starting from OEL5.8 again.
One possibility would be to download the initial OEL5.8 .iso; mount this as a loop-back filesystem; adjust some RPMs and config; then re-create an .iso from this file. However, this doesn't allow us to update the kernel very easily. We'd prefer an approach which starts from a set of RPMs (perhaps including modified kernel RPMs) and builds the .iso from scratch.
    Many thanks for any pointers.

You cannot simply edit an .iso image file because the iso9660 filesystem is read-only. And even if you create your own iso image from scratch, with a bootable code, any package you add will not be part of the initial installation, unless you recreate the appropriate software repository database and anaconda installer. Sounds like overkill to me for what you are describing.
Why would you want to go through the endeavor to adjust the Oracle Linux distribution DVD for the purpose of creating a customized system? Why not using Kickstart instead, or a simply create a post-installation script to modify the installation to your needs?

  • Odd things after making a Disk Image

    Hello All,
I'm a admin for a large group of Mac's. When I did my last hardware upgrade we deployed 10.3 and I built a master computer with all apps and sys prefs configured for our group of users. I then took that computer and made it my master and used Disk Utility to make a disk image of that pre-configured computer on a firewire drive and distribute the image to all new hardware that came in. It all worked well and I had no problems.
All users have been upgraded now to 10.4. I went to build a new image from scratch from a 10.4 install disk, did everything just like the first time around, with one problem. When I boot from the Firewire drive and use Disk Utility to restore the image back to a new computer and restart on the HD I see more than I should.
I see the links to etc, var, usr out on the root of the HD as links. Anyone can just double click on them and go right into any of these folders. A friend of mine said that in 10.3 their was a file called .hidden, that was a list of these links that were invisible, but it is no longer in 10.4. Does anyone know why this happened and how to fix this problem?
Any help would be great. Thanks

  • Imaging from the ZCM

Currently, the way that I capture and restore images is through the bash prompt in the linux kernel.
I know there is a way to capture an image of a device via the ZCM. We currently use the ZCM 10.3.1 version. I just had a few questions after reading some documentation on this.
    1. Am I understanding that you can setup a particular device to take an image via the ZCM? If yes, do all I have to do is check the device, and click Take an image? If I do that, how or what causes Zenworks to start taking an image of the device I just selected?
    2. Once I get the image, is it possible to apply that image to another device via the ZCM? If so, how?
    Thanks for all your help.

So craig, I created an image from scratch many moons ago. Doesn't have Zenworks on it at all. So if I wanted to push that image to a new device, I would just create an imaging bundle, then assign it to that device that has Zenworks on it right?
My only concern is, that will likely wipe out Zenworks on the device that is receiving the image, since the image source doesn't have Zenworks on it. how do you get around that?

  • Creating floppy disk images (from Disk Utility) recognized by Parallels

    Hi there,
After making the Parallels plunge last week, and installing a couple of my old OS's in it, I unearthed my old MS-DOS 6.22 disks. (remember that, boys and girls?)
With the help of my brother, I managed to export the contents onto a USB flash drive in the hopes of creating the necessary .fdd files that Parallels uses to create a virtual DOS machine.
(FYI - I already have DOSBox installed... but now with Parallels, I was looking to install the real deal)
Normally, renaming a .dmg file (created through Disk Utility) to a .fdd should force Mac OS to associate the image with Parallels, and thus allowing it to be recognized as a valid floppy image.
Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case for me. Parallels cannot recognize the disk images created as floppy drive images. Even after formatting the volume as both MS-DOS and MS-DOS (FAT 16), nothing seems to work.
I've already checked the Parallels forums, but couldn't drudge up anything. I was hoping one of the Level 3+'s here had some experience with this.
Am I missing something in the Disk Utility .dmg creation process of these files, or would I need a separate application to create a valid .img/.ima file to get this to work?
    Thanks!
    Steve

I am also having this issue. If I figure it out I'll post my solution. If anybody has had success it would be very helpful to know how they made proper images.

There is the AdobePremiereElements.exe for Premiere Elements (video editing) and the PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe for Photoshop Elements (photo editing).
Right now you keep mentioning Premiere Elements, but I am seeing your description more like Photoshop Elements.

  • Making a Menu from Scratch

As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no way to create a menu from scratch.
Allowing you to make your own back ground, music and links to videos. You think that we this "advanced" software, they would also have the option to make your own menu from scratch. Sometimes those are the most meaningful DVDs.
Also, The "Old Themes" aren't available, so when I click on them, I agree to download the extra features, expecting for them to become available. But after the installation is done, there is no difference. The reason I wanted some of the Older themes is because some of them seemed to have simpler features where it is almost as though you made it from scratch with a simple picture as the background.

Good info already posted above. Allow me to add. Question: Are you looking to make a static menu or one with full motion like that found on the Revolution theme?
If it's the latter, then iDvd is fairly useless when straying from stock themes. DVDSP combined with apps like Motion will allow you to approach and perhaps even surpass the motion menus as seen in iDvd. But the learning curve for DVDSP and Motion is rather large (not to mention expensive). So unless you have plenty of cash and time to invest then I'd highly recommend simply modifying an existing theme. Suggest you also take a look at a few of Karsten's prior posts on this subject because he has this down to a rather fine art in terms of iDvd modifications to existing themes.

  • Making 3channel 32 bit images from 1 channel 8 bit images ( channel combining)

    Hi guys
Although I have a simple problem, i could not solve it yet.
I am tring to combine opencv and labview by using .dll.I succesfully process and read  8bit images from opencv to display on labview as a 8bit images.
My problem encounters here. When i try to process 3 different 8bit images in opencv and display them as a single 3 channel RGB image, labview can not read image properly.
I also think that can I combine these 3 different 8bit images in labview not in opencv? is there any .vi that can merge 3 8bit images and produces single 32bit RGB image?
    Thanks

IBO2_API int Convolution_OpenCV_NI (char* LVImagePtrSrc, int LVLineWidthSrc,

Is this what you want? I saved it to LV2010.
It lets you initialize the three planes to different colors and then merges them into a color RGB image.

  • Making QT Movie slideshow from iPhoto/iMovie with sharp images

Can anyone tell me how to make a QT slideshow that has sharp images after the rendering stage, or if there is any software that can make a good slideshow for a photographer to show clients

It all depends on your "distribution" format and the video codecs used in it.
iMovie isn't a good tool because it is intended to be used on true "video" and would have to convert your images into video formats.
To avoid conversion your should use QuickTime Pro to assemble your project and leave it in a QuickTime format (no exports to iDVD).
Video formats have a predefined frame rate. TV is 29.97 frames per second and your single image file would have hundreds of "duplicates" depending on the frame rate.
QuickTime Pro can create files that have widely varying frame rates. You could have one frame play for 10 seconds and the next play for 1 second. Mix and match to your hearts content.
Older version of iPhoto could also make these low frame rate files but newer versions make your image files into "video" so that leaves iPhoto out (for the most part). There are some tricks but I won't go into them here.
To make a project using QuickTime Pro you would first resize your images to the final distribution dimensions. For playback via computer your could size them to the dimensions of your screen. For "projector" projects size them at 640X480 (4:3 aspect).
You can import these as an "Image Sequence" using QuickTime Pro if you want all the images be displayed at the same frame rate.
Let's assume you have 50 images from a multi-megabyte digital camera. You can use iPhoto to export them (to a Desktop folder) to resize them to computer display size (your screen resolution) or to a fixed size (640X480 for TV or projector).
Use the Finder to rename the files in sequence (1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.) and open the image sequence via QuickTime Pro.
You could also add them one at a time to an audio track. This allows you to vary the display time of your images.
Open the first of your image files using QuickTime Pro.
Select all (Command-A) and Copy (Command-C).
Open an audio file with QuickTime Pro and make a selection (via the controller to set in and out points). Once you have a selection use the Edit menu and choose "Add to Selection & Scale".
This will add your single image file to the duration of that selection.
Leave the "out" point as your next "in" point and make a new selection in the audio track. Open your next image file and repeat the steps above. If you want to display all black (no video) you could move the selection further forward in the timeline (past the previous image).
Now your file has your series of images or individual files set in a timeline. You could "Delete" the audio track (to play just the images) to keep just your varying frame rate movie.

  • How do you make a floppy image on a mac mini?

I tried the following to make a bootable floppy image and it would not even read in a virtual machine.  I have Oracle Virtualbox.  I am using a Mac Mini 2011 with 4GB of RAM.  I have tried making a blank floppy and copying to it by dragging and using the Terminal, but neither works.  Here are the cmds I used:
    dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024 count=1440>floppy.img
Then I mounted and erased the image file in Disk Utility.
    cp -Rpv /Volumes/Untitled/ /Volumes/UNTITLED\ 1/
The above command copied all the files from the floppy to the image but the image wouldn't read on the virtual machine.
    Thanks,
    ericgsch

It's an old thread, but searches still retrieve it. For what it's worth, look at (for example) http://kb.parallels.com/en/4794
The procedure to make an image of a floppy disk is basically as follows:
Put your disk in your floppy drive. Open Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, select your floppy drive, select New Image, select "read/write" and no encryption, then Save (wherever you want the image to be). Then (in Finder) you might want to change the filename extension from .dmg to something else, like .flp or .fdd, depending on what you want the image for. For VirtualBox, you might want .img.

  • Encoding process isn't working properly while making the disk image (or DVD)in my iDVD program.   Is there a remedy for this?

I've used Old Toad's suggestion and made a disk image first because the DVDs I've tried to produce show a few pictures in playback and then go white.  The slideshow works fine in the iDVD program, and in the initial rendering stage all seems o.k. until the encoding step.  Then, it processes 4 or 5 pictures, then goes blank but the music continues to be processed.  Is there a remedy for this (I know Apple has ditched the program and the optical drives.)  I deleted the project and tried making it over from scratch, but no luck.

I am simply lookig for some help not an argument.  I am not an RF specialist however have setup a few wireless networks in my tenure at Wynn Resorts.  I fully agree that wireless networking is an art and a science however the powers that be in Network Land have toughted wireless networking is the easiest and quickest way to get two computers to talk with one another.  As I previously said I have already turned one (1) MBP in for this problem and Apple decided to replace it because they could not fix the problem with my particular MBP.  This MBP was running Leopard when the problems started
I am having a hard time believeing that there are several other devicces in my home that depend on a wireless network to operate and my MBP is the only one having an issue.  I took this a step further and decided to see what would happen if I tried to connect wirelessly via Fusion.  In Windows 7 I am able to print and scan to my hearts content without any issues.  I am able to browse the internet as much as I want.  I close Fusion and try to connect to my printer via wireless and nothing.
In order to get Apple to help do I need to get a Network Analyzer and capture packets when I have these problems?  Out of the 1000 + posts is there a consolidation of which answer is the best?  BTW I am accessing the internet via a wireless connection using Fusion and Windows 7.
In response to Linc's comments, I will look at the router specifications however I did not qualify that these devices are not using the wireless connection at the same time.  Right now I would guess there are maybe two (2) or three (3) at the most that are actively transmitting / receiving information. --  Thanks
