Making a Startup Manager bootable Hardware Test DVD?

Even with my own instructions here*:
http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
I have not been able to make a Startup Manager bootable hardware test DVD backup
of my existing MacBook Pro installation DVD. Is anyone familiar with making such a copy strictly for backup purposes?
- * Links to my pages may give me compensation.

I'm close to accepting this can't be done. Just thought I'd quote from Disk Utility in Tiger before I close this issue...
------------------------ start ---------------------------
"You can create CD or DVD that you can use as a startup disk, by creating a disk image of a disk or volume that can start up your computer, and then copying that image to a CD or DVD.
Select the disk to copy it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New > "Disk Image from (name of volume)."
Type a name for the disk image
Choose "DVD/CD master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
Click Save.
When creating the disk image finishes, eject the original CD or DVD.
Select the disk image in the list and choose Images > Burn.
When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and click Burn."

  • Hardware Test DVD from Apple

In G5 era Apple Towers shipped with an OS DVD and one with Apple Hardware Testing software, I think 'customised' for the particular machine (not sure on that). Did/do Mac Pros ship with same?
Reason is I'm looking to buy a 2008 or later Mac Pro on ebay and would like to run test on pickup or at least have seller run it for me and email results (which they could edit results, I guess, but they prob just refuse to run instead if they had a faulty machine).
    Thanks in advance as always.
Should I have posted in Mac Pro: DVD and CD sub-forum?!

Did/do Mac Pros ship with same?
Insert the computer's original disk and then restart with D held down. In the case of the MacBook Air, just press D at startup.

  • Separate Apple Hardware Test DVD for MacBook Pro original??

Hey Folks, I'm trying to verify whether or not the MacBook Pro came with the Apple Hardware Test as a separate DVD disk. The "MacBook Pro" Install disk references it but I can't seem to find the software on that DVD. Any guesses out there would be appreciated. I'm about to perform an upgrade for Tiger to Leopard and wnat to give my laptop the "hairy eyeball" before I begin.
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

Insert the DVD and start up the computer with the D key held down. The Hardware Test is on a separate area of the DVD and isn't normally accessible.

  • Apple Hardware Test dvd from Tiger - use in SL?

My Macbook Pro2,2 - 2,33 GHz was shipped with Tiger 10.4.8.
Since then I have installed Leopard, and last night I upgraded from 10.5.8 to SL 10.6 with the retail disk version.
Alas, I no longer have the Leopard disc, but the original Tiger Install disk 1 have the following info printed on it:
    Mav OS version 10.4.8
    AHT version 3A118
    Disk version 1.0
    2Z691-5967-A
Now I'm wondering if I can run the AHT from this disc, on the same machine, running SL 10.6 (Build 10A432)?
I have not updatet SL after installation.

    Hi
It won't matter what you've installed on the internal drive. Booting from the original disks that came with your hardware will always work as the system being loaded will be the one on the optical disk, not the one on the internal drive. Upgrading the OS does not upgrade the hardware in a way that stops the original OS that shipped with that hardware from working.
The AHT Test is not an OS in the sense you're generally used to.

  • Can I run hardware test and repair a disk with Leopard using 10.3 DVD

    Hi,
I'm trying to decide whether to partition and clone Leopard to my external or partition and install Tiger on the external.
My iMac came with 10.3.6 install and hardware test DVD's and they (Comp USA) gave me a Tiger drop-in DVD. I upgraded to Leopard through a family pack DVD (when I told my friend I would by one of the install's I thought I would get a DVD, but you only get an install license, oh well). By the way, Leopard runs great in my rev A iMac G5.
I'm trying to figure out which os to use on the external as a safe-boot incase something happens. If I clone Leopard onto a partition for backup/boot, can I still use the Disc Repair (not permissions) and Hardware Test from the 10.3 or Tiger DVD's to maintain that permission should something bad happen? The way I see it, i'll be able to repair permissions on both the main and external drives using Leopard's disc utility, but I'm not sure if I can repair a Leopard disk or do Hardware Test on that disc using an earlier version of OSX install/Hardware Test DVD's.
Will earlier versions of OSX repair a Leopard disk and be able run Hardware Test?
    Thanks for the help,

Yes, that seems to be the case, but I didn't do good enough research when he asked if I wanted a license for Leopard. For some reason, I had it in my mind that a Family pack came with multi DVD's for people. Maybe that's why he sold me a license so cheap. I thought I was getting a bargin, you get what you pay for.
So, I have the hardware test DVD's that came with the iMac and the Tiger drop-in is just an upgrade with no Hardware Test, you are correct.
But: (let me make sure I have this right) I should not use the 10.3 DVD's or the Tiger drop-in to repair a disc (not permissions) on a hard drive running Leopard. Is this what you are saying? I kind of thought this would be the case. If it is, I'm going to install MY stuff that I have the DVD's for on the external as an emergency boot disc.

  • Apple Hardware Test DISABLED by update?

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions. Is there a way to get this feature working again?
MacBook (Late 2007) has a cool undocumented feature... hold the D key at startup, and Apple Hardware Test (AHT) launches--WITHOUT THE DVD. Yes, it's built-in.
Sadly, this feature seems to have been disabled by a recent update... possibly the Keyboard Firmware Update
Sigh. Now I have to drag out my clunky old DISC just to quick check TBOT
see other posts here regarding 4SNS/1/40000001:TBOT error in AHT

Try starting the AHT with the OPTION + D keys.
You should be able to use the #2 install disk.  It has the AHT instructions on it.
    Ciao.

  • Problem with Hardware Test on Quad G5

I have just set up my new Quad G5 and tried to run a big render task on Final Cut Pro. The task quits every time after a few minutes with no explanation.
I decided to try the Hardware Test to see if I was having memory problems with the 2 1GB modules that I had installed.
I removed everything connected to the computer except the display (20" Studio). The tests seem to load OK but as soon as the opening "Test choice" window comes up I get an error in the bottom left corner of the screen which says:
Warning! Memory leaks numMalloc before 49 numMalloc after 812
    Reboot to reinitialize the heap
    Standalone Diagnostics v24.1.2
So I thought there must be a memory problem, so I removed the 2 new DIMMs and tried again - same problem!
Do I have a bad test disk?

    Hi everyone!
Many thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Here's where I am now.
    I reset the PMU
I downloaded Hardware Monitor (and paid the $8!) and it tells me that everything is normal. For the Quad, this gidget monitors all the fan speeds (7 fans and 2 pumps), all the temperatures (i.e. of all 4 CPU's, logic board, memory controller, HDD, inlet and outlet temps, graphics chip - 11 monitors in all) and CPU voltages and currents.
All fans are running normally, all temps are normal, everything looks fine!
I also did an extensive memory test (using Memtest) to make sure that my extra 2GB did not have a problem.
So...... all I can deduce is that I have a weird error on the hardware test DVD!
I did also solve the other problem with my FCP rendering. I had been using a non-self-contained NTSC HDV movie in the timeline for my down-conversion/standards conversion to PAL SD standard. I found that if I made the movie self-contained it worked fine. I actually think that I might have had some bum references in the non-self-contained version (it makes use of a whole lot of previous render files) because I had transferred all the info from my old G4 and something was probably missing!!!
That's how this whole thing started - the file wouldn't render properly - always stopped after about 10 minutes. It is a very big render - it's a 1 hour 20 min HDV video and will take 45 hours to render on the Quad (over 3 days on the dual G4). I suspected bad memory so tried the hardware test, found the fan error .....etc, etc!
Now I know that everything is good so I can concentrate on my FCP projects.

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • Running Hardware Test or Running Mac OS X from DVD with an older iMac

I have a 4 year old iMac which is running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and using a wired aluminum keyboard along with a Magic Mouse. I recently had some files corrupted so that when I booted up, the dock would not load and could not run any programs. It appeared to me that Finder wasn't working properly.
In any event, I tried to run the Apple Hardware Test from the Snow Leopard DVD by starting the computer and pressing the D key but the computer would not boot off the DVD and continued booting off the hard drive.
I also tried starting the computer with the C key to try and do a reinstall of OS X, again with same result.
I ended up bringing the computer to Genius Bar at local Apple Store. The tech guy plugged an older styled white plastic keyboard and the computer recognized the D and C keys during start up. He then did a recovery of OS with no problems.
He downloaded a firmware update for me to install when I got home. When I tried to install the update, updater said firmware update is not needed.
At the moment, I'm in the same position as before. The computer runs fine but I still can not boot off the DVD because the aluminum keyboard's keys are recognized at startup.
Any ideas on firmware update to rectify this? Don't have the older plastic keyboard and seems silly to have an old one on hand in case computer acts up.

I tried resetting the PRAM but since keyboard keys are not recognized on booting up, holding the CONTROL, COMMAND, P & R keys didn't work. I noticed that on older Power PC Macs that holding Power On button continuously while starting up would force computer into Open Firmware so PRAM could be reset. This didn't work for me.
    I also reset the SMC.
When I look in Utilities, I see that Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 is installed last modified on Oct. 8, 2009. I've had the keyboard much longer than that so not sure what that means. When I clicked it, it said firmware is up to date.
In any event, is there any way to force a firmware update even if my computer says the firmware is up to date? Thanks

  • How do I run the Apple Hardware Test? Its not on my DVD and the Internet-connected version tells me my computer isn't supported!

I have a mini - late 2010 2.4 ghz core 2 duo - that just started black-screen crashing and failing to wake from sleep. Up to a few dasy ago this was a really bulletproof machine! When trying to restart it afer a crash it sometimes emits three weak beeps (sometimes more).
Apart from spontaneous motherboard failure (??) I can only guess that the RAM failed (an 8GB upgrade installed last fall). I pulled one 4GB RAM board and the mini booted again! But it still sometimes fails to wake from sleep, and sometimes give the three beeps. I've run REMBER (a memory test program) on one of the RAM boards and it passes the test. My next step is to test the second one -- but whether it passes or fails there seems to be something else going on.
I'd love to try the Apple Hardware Test but:
    - pressing D on startup has no effect (even when starting up with the original install DVD)
    - pressing Option-D brings up an Internet-loading screen that brings up a Hardware Test screen then tells me my computer is not supported.
Is the AHT simply unavailable for my model of Mac? And/or is there any way to test my hardware?

The 2010 Mac Mini's came with a 2 DVD set, a Mac OS X Install DVD (22691-6657-A) and an Application DVD (22691-6658 -A). The Apple Hardware Test is on the Application DVD (22691-6658-A).

  • IMac intel late 2006, lost DVDs, how to run apple hardware test

    Hello, Applers,
I have an iMac intel core 2 duo late 2006. I have upgraded it to snow leopard. From two months ago, it began to show distorted pictues, random lines/pixels/, and regular freezing. But if I boot it into the safe mode, it works well, although there is no sound or webcam. I did a research online and it seems that I should run apple hardware test (AHT) first. But the DVDs came withi this machines have been lost. where can I download this software? I would greatly appreciate your help if any of you who also have this model of machine and would like to lend me your DVDs.
    any suggestions are welcome.

You can purchase replacements from AppleCare:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.

There is no way to run the AHT without the discs.
If it works OK in safe mode then you might think about:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) invoked at startup with 'ALT-D' not 'D'

Although several reasonnaably reliable sources (including such page as http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533 ) mention that pressing 'D' at startup will invoke the Apple Hardware Test startup option, at leats on my Macbook Pro 2011 with OSX Lion, EFI 2.8 it is really 'ALT-D' that invokes AHT not 'D'. Pressing the 'D' at startup simply seems to hangs bootup until I release the key.

OS X Lion- About OS X Recovery
OS X (Lion/Mountain Lion)- About OS X Recovery
Computers that can be upgraded to use Lion Internet Recovery
The above documents what keyboard shortcuts are used to invoke AHT and some added functions in Lion and/or Mountain Lion.

  • Need to perform a hardware test, but pressing D during startup is fruitless

I've got some sort of glitch I need to work through.  I'm assuming it's hardware related, and I directly suspect the GPU, or maybe a lose connection thereto (symptoms are coming and going).  Symptoms coincided directly with an OSX update to 10.9.4, but that might just be incidental.  Unfortunately, upon startup, I can't load into the Hardware Tester/Diagnostics tool... pressing 'D' during startup leads me to looking at a grey screen for about half a minute, then the MBP just decides to load into OSX.  I've tried to perform this test about ten times now - same result each time.
Here's a couple of pictures of my screen when the issue is playing up.  It's obviously rendering the computer unusable:

    http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh230/ravenhaller/IMG_0293_zps67c6c3fb.jpg
I'm trying for a combo update reinstall of 10.9.4 right now.  But if you have any other advice i'm all ears.

Yes.   In one of those photos i've provided it's the OSX recovery screen that is bugging out.  I seem to have a 50/50 hit rate in getting through - like I said - the symptoms are coming and going.  Once within OSX recovery menu i've fired up disk utilities to make sure i'm not dealing with a dying HD - disk utility is suggesting my HD is in perfect health and perfect working order.
I just followed through with reinstalling the 10.9.4 combo update too - I still can't perform a hardware test.

  • Can you run Hardware Test from older DVD?

    Hello,
My mini2,1 came with OS 10.4. I have the two original system discs. SInce I bought it right before 10.5 was released, Apple sent me a single Leopard Upgrade disc. Does anyone know if the Apple Hardware Test is on the 10.5 upgrade disc? If it isn't, can I run the test from Disc 1 of the original 10.4 DVD's even though the mini is now running 10.5?
    Thanks in advance.

Excellent. I found the hardware test on the original 10.4 OS X Install Disc 1. Glad to know that the test on the DVD is for my specific computer hardware, and that the current OS on that machine does not matter. This was not clear to me and I could not find an answer on Apple's help pages. And that explains why the hardware test isn't on the 10.5 upgrade DVD.
    Thanks BD and Niel.

  • Apple Hardware Test on Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo (early 2007) with no DVD?

    Hi,
My Mac is keep on freezing and I would really like to know what is wrong with it. (I did PRAM NVRAM reset 100 times... didnt help.)
I can't find my OSX Tiger DVD which was included when i bought my Macbook Pro in January 2007. So I've been reading through forums like crazy trying to find another way to run AHT (apple hardware test). So far I came up empty.
So my question is: If I upgrade from Lion (which is my current osx on this machine) to Mountain Lion, will I be able to use online AHT (option + d)? Or more general: is there any way to run AHT on my machine or any other way to find the broken component. or should i just throw it away?
    Thank you.

Take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and they will run free diagnostics. If there's a lot that needs to be done on your machine to get it back up and running, ask about Apple's flat-rate repair pricing. For less than $350, you could have a machine that is almost like new.
