Making an account unable to login, but available over network

I have the same group of employee user accounts on all iMacs in my airport network, but I would like to prevent certain users from logging into certain machines. Changing the account password on the forbidden machine is not the answer, since the users need to access files on the machine through the network (connecting as their own username). Long ago there was a simple way to prevent login to a valid account. Is that still possible?

So it sounds like you want to give other users access for file sharing, but not the ability to log in while physically sitting in front of the machine. If the file sharing is over AFP, a "sharing only" account may be suitable in this scenario:
..."You can share files on your computer with other users on a network by creating a sharing only account. A sharing only account allows users to connect with your computer just like a server. However you cannot physically log into a computer using a sharing only account name like you can with most other accounts."...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11776.html
It also may be necessary to configure individual shared folders appropriately and place the items to be accessed within them (see "System Preferences" > "File Sharing" > "Shared Folders").

  • Mobile account can't login when connected to network

I have a 10.6.3 mobile account set up on a laptop that's bound to an AD domain. The mobile account creation worked great, as expected, and the user was fine for a few days.
Then the user reported that he was no longer able to log in to his mobile account. After troubleshooting a bit, I noticed that if he's NOT connected to the company LAN where the AD domain is located, he can login fine. But if I connect him to the company LAN, the machine complains that his password is wrong (and we've reset the password in AD, so we know it's correct). So if I flip him back off the network, his login works again.
There are many other mobile accounts working on this same LAN that aren't having this problem.
Anyone seen this or know what I might try?
    Thanks.

Trying turning on DirectoryServices debugging and see if you can scare up any more data:
    sudo killall -USR1 DirectoryService
    Then monitor

Even without debugging, you might want to look at

  • Unable to access shared files over network after period of time.

First off, I don't think that this issue is related to our router, but I have been searching for a fix and can not find one. We have a WRT54GS. Now, on to our issue:
At my work, we have a small network with computers sharing files between the others. I have attached a network diagram to help explain this better.
Our Win7 machine is our main computer that shares an external hard drive with much information that the other computers need to access. What we have noticed is either after a sleep, or even a period of time of say, 2 hours, those files are no longer able to be accessed. The Win7 machine is still sharing them, but the WinXP machines are unable to access them anymore and my Mac can see the computer is unable to connect to the folders. I have gone and attempted to get some help over at Microsofts site but that was a fail. Here is the link to the forum post there. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/f0a2e8d6-f75a-41d7-a280-c6f3adbffa...
A member there gave me this:
The Network connection is probably not resuming after sleep.
    First try this, http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/power_save_win7.jpg
It is in the Network Connection Properties under the Network card configuration.
If it already checked this way, or does not work after checking, the Network card has to be taken out of the computer's Power Saving loop, and stay on all the time.
Otherwise, Updating the Card with the latest OEM drivers (downloaded from the computer's support site) might help too.
On a rare occasions, some cards might be "Quirky" in this regards and need to be replaced.
--I would like to add that this DOESN'T ONLY happen after sleep, it also happens after a time of being used.
I attempted those and no luck. This problem is still occurring and the only way we can fix it is by restarting the Win7 machine. But even if it is being used, we have no idea when those files are unable to be accessed.
*I will add that the Win7 machine is still able to access the other computers when this problem occurs if that helps.
**The Win7 machine is a Dell T3500 running Windows 7 64bit. I can provide specific hardware if needed. The drivers are all up to date as of yesterday.
***So upon looking in the Windows XP machine, both of the folders from the Win7 machine disappear once this problem occurs in the My Network Places folder. And one folder is on the internal drive, one is on external. The computers are in this situation now where I am unable to access them. The Win7 machine can read and write from the other computers, but the other computers can even see the Win7 Machine.
****All the connections are wired and are not using the wireless.
Thanks for any help that anyone may have for me!

It sounds like there is incompatibility issue with XP and Win7. To isolate this, do you have another Win7 machine? Try to add it to the network and check if the shared drives are accessible after sleep. If you don't have another computer, try virtual machine and create a Win7 system.
Update your LAN card driver from the manufacturer's site. Don't use the driver from windows update.
Lastly, does this happen to your XP machines? Like, one of the XP machine sharing a folder and falls asleep. When it wakes up, does Win7 machine can still access the shared folder?

    Hello,
Error - com.sap.dictionary.runtime.DdException: 'XXXXXX' not properly defined! Unable to create Metadata connection for Dictionary Provider. Either the logical System Name 'XXXXXX' has not been properly defined in the System Landscape Directory, or you are not using a MsgServerDestination (AppServerDestinations are not permitted for Metadata connections
This is the error at one of the remote machines. The JCo Connection works on the J2EE host system (while testing and pinging under the Single Server mode.)
I believe this error will be rectified if I upgrade to SPS7, but we have certain other considerations that restrict us from doing that.
Could someone please point out the exact location thats responsible for this if possible and maybe I could just upgrade that part and clear this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
you should consider three  things if your java instance is on network.
    1. SLD ( check if java instance is listed on SLD and test the connection from portal to SLD.
    2. You need an entry in the services files of both the Java and ABAP servers as such:
    sapms<SID>  3600/tcp
Remember to always have a blank line at the bottom of the services file!
    3. try to add the certificate in portal.
if you can provide with the exact error message it would be easy to help.
    Kind regards,
    vamsi.

  • Applet runs on local PC but not over network

Are there some classes that can't be used in downloaded files. Do I need to change some settings on Internet Explorer?
Does the class need to be downloaded ahead of time? I thought the class was downloaded and run upon html access?

  • Unable to share with Itunes over network

    Greetings...
I have previously been able to share music between all my computers (four PC's and one Mac) but I recently noticed that other computers' Itunes libraries are no longer showing up. No settings were changed within Itunes (set to share all with no password). I'm not sure what has changed between then and now, besides possibly a newer version of Itunes in use. The same version is currently in use on all my computers (7.5.0.20).
Firewall software is disabled on all computers. The network is a simple class C non-routable, with Linksys router and cable modem on the other side.
Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time.

Bump to the top... any ideas anyone? Thanks!

  • Can print over network, but scan over network doesn't work

Scanner communication cannot be established from Windows 7 PC to 1536dnf MP.
Printing from that computer is fine.  scanning from other computers over the network is fine also.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled HP software, but that didn't fix the issue.
Scanning worked from this PC previously, but recent networking changes required I rediscover printer via a fresh install.
With my old router, the HP software would auto-discover the printer on the network, with the new network, that fails, and I have to provide a specific IP address to search, which then succeeds.
I am trying to understand where communication between win 7 PC and scanner might be misconfigured, when same PC communicates to the printer in the same MFP works fine.

    Hi @tennisfan76 ,

  • Unable to install Windows 8 over network

    Hi,
I ll make my story short. I accidentally deleted some registry keys which rendered my keyboard and mouse unusable in windows 8. I tried to repair it via netwrok as I dont have a dvd or usb drive. I configured the tftp server using "serva" insted
of using windows PE(too large to download). Im able to see the setup screen loading but i get "the file autorun.dll could not be loaded or is corrupt error code 0x71" . I used the iso downloaded from microsoft websiteand extracted it to the serva
root folder. I used winrar to extract-getting error, ultraiso to extract-same error. Is my iso corrupt? I have used the same iso before for installations

    Hi,
    Any update here?
As Andreas Molin mentioned above, this might be caused by the currupt ISO.  Please take a try to download a new one and check if issue insists.
Please keep us updated. Thank you.

  • Unable to login in to Mac App Store using valid account.

I recently inherited a spare MacBook Air from my wife (who got a new one). I deleted her user account, and set up a new admin user account for me. The machine is running 10.7.5.
Now, I am absolutely unable to login to the App Store. I am using my valid Apple ID -- for example, the same Apple ID that I used to gain access to this very forum. System Preferences accepts my ID. iTunes accepts my ID. BUT the App Store will aboslutely NOT respond. It will not load. I get the red "connection failed" alert, and then after several tries it doesn't respond at all.
It doesn't give any option to switch users -- perhaps once the original owner has used the App Store, the computer will never again allow anyone else to use it? It doesn't say that there is another user logged in. There appears to be no way of deleting and reinastalling the App Store. There is no cache file I can find to be cleared. There is no preference option. There is no information. There appears to be no way of fixing this at all, short of wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. Is that what I have to do? WHY IS THIS SO HORRIBLY DESIGNED? And why is there no support short of the forum? I hate this about Apple (despite being a long-time Apple evangelist and OSX devotee).
    Thanks.

The first thing you should do after acquiring a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.

  • Can not log into server computer with any accounts - "You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."

I have a Mac mini running the latest version of OS X and Server. Been running fine and flawlessly. However, I had a strange problem with the iCloud preferences panel crashing when I tried to access it, so I rebooted. Now I can not log into the system with any accounts. My master admin account (along with all the others) gives me the error:
You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I am able to see the server from other macs and I can log into it using the same account, but it only shows me a few of the shared folders I have access to but NOT to my main directories.
Rebooting into Command-R and doing a disk utility, I try and repair permission on that drive and get a bunch of errors like:
ACL found but not expected on Users
    Repaired "Users"
ACL found but not expected on Users/.localized
    Repaired "Users/.localized"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared
    Repaired "Users/shared"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared/.localized
    Repaired "Users/Shared/.localized"
    Permissions repair complete.
But rebooting is no joy...same problem. Any idea what is going on or how to repair it? Should I do a time machine restore? Complete new OS X install? Any idea what is causing this or how to salvage it?

Got everything to re-install and it worked fine...for a few hours. Then I came in to find ALL of my network users deleted. Just GONE. Then found out the Open Directory was trashed and was unable to open, recover or restore from a backup. Looks like I may have a bad drive here.
I installed a new drive in the system, re-installed and so far (for a couple of hours anyway) the system seems to be working and stable.

  • Unable to login to Blackberry ID account

Last Thursday my phone got wet, I had it in rice til today, it looks like it works but soon as I try to get on it asks for  my username and password, I put it in and I keep getting the message "unable to login to your BlackBerry ID account", can someone tell me what to do
    Thank You

    Hello,
First, congratulations on doing the rice treatment properly...so many folks get impatient and check too soon! But, even with that, with moisture intrusion into a BB, the only thing predictable is that the result will be unpredictable. I've heard of BBs coming back to life and running fine for a long time. Others never come back to life at all. Others come back fine at first, and then get worse over time. And everything in between those results as well. You are lucky that you have it working as it is.
As to that error message, here is a KB:
KB28212 "Unable to login to your BlackBerry ID account" or "Unable to update your BlackBerry ID account information" error occurs on a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 7
Please watch very carefully as you enter your credentials to be 100% certain that the characters you intend are actually being sent...with moisture damage, the keyboard connections often get flaky, resulting in very strange things.
    Good luck!

  • Message: Unable to login to account (name) at this time.

I have a Power Mac G4 Dual 500 MHZ tower with 600 MB of ram. The system, disks and permissions all check out perfectly. No hardware errors or disk errors. When I try to log into my account I get the message:"Unable to login to account (name) at this time". If I try 3 times with what I am certain is my password, I get another message that allows me to type in the master password and reset the account password.
I have tried "resetting" the password to the old password and new passwords, I have booted from the system disk and reset the account password and I have logged into another admin account and reset the password for the account. NOTHING.
FileVault is ON. I'm quite certain this has something to do with the problem, because of the message about the "Master Password and Turning FileVault off. I've scoured these discussion pages and elsewhere for an answer, but I can't seem to find any articles with the correct suggestions.
Does anybody out there have any helpful suggestions for this situation? I literally have about 5 years of addresses, music, photos, and other important documents in there that I really really need. Some of them are backed up, but what a nightmare. Thanks anybody for any help.

    PowerMac G4 Dual 500   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Filevault provides increased security, but unfortunately this sometimes comes at the expense of data integrity. Apple needs to emphasize this more, but it is essential that users of "Filevault" maintain up to date backups. This is true for everyone of course, but it is especially important for "Filevault" users.
The contents of a "Filevault" protected account are wrapped up and stored as a single encrypted file, the username.sparseimage file. The fact that everything is in one file makes all of the data vulnerable to a single disk error. The error message you describe could indicate that that file has become misplaced (relatively easy to fix) or that that file has become corrupt (possibly impossible to fix in which case the data is lost). It will also appear if the login password doesn't match the ".sparseimage" password.
To at least try to distinguish between these possiblities, try logging in to the other "admin" account, and begin by changing the password of the affected account back to what it was originally. Then try opening "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands (in all lines, where it says 'username', substitute the affected user's short name, and enter the affected user's password when prompted):<pre>su -l username
    ls -ald /Users/{\.,}username
find /Users -name username.sparseimage -print -exec hdiutil attach {} \; 2>&1 |grep -v ^find</pre>The output and results of the above commands might provide an indication of whether or not the problem is fixable...
