Making generated variable names?

Hey, I'm trying to make new Vector variables given some input I already have. I'm doing it as follows:
for (int i=0; i < commandName.size()-1; i++) {
String newVariableName = commandName.elementAt(i).toString();
Vector newVariableName = new Vector();
Of course, it's not working - but do you know if it is possible to generate variable names in this manner?

Use HashMap.
You will generally find that most languages that offer variable dereferencing are also essentially "typeless", although you can sometimes query what the type of the "value" of a variable is.
HashMap does this exactly, with the bonus that you can double your namespace by creating two maps! :-)

  • Generate variable name from a String

    I've got a String "MyVariable" and I need to reference a static variable named MyStaticClass.MyVariable. How do you turn a String into a variable name?

    You can't easily do it... you can using reflection:
    MyStaticClass.class.getField().getXXX("MyVariable") //depending on what type the field is...But this seems like it may be a flawed design. Maybe you should try making a static HashMap in the class, use a Static init block and static get/set methods:
    public class StaticClass
        static Map properties;
        static
            properties = new HashMap();
            properties.put("MyVariable", "Some Value");
            properties.put("OtherVariable", new Integer(3));
        public static Object get(String property)
            return properties.get(property);
        public static void set(String property, Object value)
            //Maybe some code checking to make sure object is right type
            //or don't use a set method at all to make the properties immutable
            properties.put(property, value);
    }

  • Need help generating variable name for timeout object

    Below is a function I am using to scale an object down and
    then hide it. It works fine on just one object, but if I try to run
    it on multiple objects at the same time, only the last object gets
    scaled down. I believe this is because the timeout list only ever
    has a single item in it, “ShrinkTimeOut”.
    Does each entity in the timeout list need a distinct name?
    And if so, how would I dynamically generate a name and save it so I
    can kill the timeout object once the object has scaled down fully?

    > Does it look like I am getting rid of the timeout object
    properly in my code?
    Now that you mention it, and I have a look, no - it doesn't:
    //not sure of the order of parameters here:
    function fShrinkLoop(mModel, aTimeout) {
    //Creates a variable that contains the vector value of the
    model's
    scale (vector( 1.0000, 1.0000, 1.0000 )).
    nScaleVector = mModel.getPropRef("transform").scale;
    //Checks to see if the model is 1% or less than its original
    size.
    if (nScaleVector[1]<=0.01) {
    //Makes the model invisible.
    mModel.visibility = symbol("none");
    //Kills the timeout object.
    aTimeout.forget();
    } else {
    //If it is not, we scale the model down further and allow
    the loop to
    repeat.
    mModel.scale(0.9);

  • Dynamic variable name generation

    Hi people,
    Is there any way of generating variable names dynamically in java in a loop? i.e.
    for(int i = 0; i<arrayLength; i++) {
    ArrayX.add(position, object)
    X++
    Where X is 0,1,2...etc. so i would have Array1 with something in it, Array2 with something in it, Array3 and so on.
    This is just a simple example but I've basically got an initial array of URL objects and then I want to call my getURL method on each link in my inital array and store the links associated to each initial URL in a different Array.
    Hope it makes sense, and i hope someone can help!
    Thanks in advance.

    Your example code is not clear to me (what is "position?"), and your description using URLs doesn't seem to need what you are asking for. I would be careful about using arrays - people sometimes use arrays when classes should be used.
    Anyway, I think you can get close to what you want by using a HashMap. You can use Strings as keys and the Strings would be "array01" "array02" etc.

  • How to generate variable to receive name of database on B1if

    Hi Everyone,
    I need your help, I created a web service with B1if and I tried generate one variavel to receive a name of database to use work on my web service, but I could not.
    The client will set the name of database to receive to data from webservice.
    Can generate variable to receive name of database on B1if?
    I dont find nothing about this situation, Anyone tried make something like this?
    Sorry for my bad English.
    Thanks,
    Duoglas

    Hi
    I'm not sure if I understood you correctly:
    you will receive a database name as a part of the incoming message for your web service and then you need to choose a correct system from SLD based on this name? For example there will be a <dbName> tag in your and based on its value you would have to choose appropriate system in B1iF. Am I right?
    Kind regards,

  • Presentation Variable name being passed as value

    I have a requirement where value needs to be checked against two separate fields for filtering (as OR statement). But there should be ability to filter on these fields separately as well.
    Dashboard prompt:
    Province [Multi search]
    State [Multi search]
    Combined search (Province OR State Fields) [Edit Box] --- used to pass presentation variable
    Report filter:
    Province is prompted
    AND State is prompted
    AND Province is @{presentation_variable} (no default)
    OR State is @{presentation_variable} (no default)
    But if the text field with presentation variable in not used to filter, then the report shows no result because the presentation variable name itself is taken as a value. Any solution how this can be done making sure that if province only is searched for then the presentation variable is not passed as value and the query returns no results?
    Thanks everyone.

    Thanks Rachit, that helps. For the scenario mentioned initially, even this works:
    Province is @{presentation_variable} (no default)
    OR State is @{presentation_variable} (no default)
    But the challenge is if I want to add another filter (like country) also as a filter. When users filter only on country, then the report shows no results because no value has been passed to the presentation variable and the query generated uses presentation variable name as the value!

  • How to use an array for variable name of swing components using NetBeans

    I'm completely new to Java and GUIs, so excuse me if I use the wrong terminology. I'm making a JFrameFrom in NetBeans. I'm getting really tired of typing instructions like jTextField15.setText(variable[15].text); I would like to make the variable names of my text fields an array so I can use a loop to change the values, text, tooltips, etc. When I click "change variable name" it won't let me put an array in. The code that Swing generates is protected and I can't change it. I know there must be a way to do this. Any help is appreciated.

    Try not to use the NetBeans visual GUI builder. Then it should be easy to create an array of text fields:
    JTextField[] tfs = new JTextField[15];
    for (int i = 0; i < tfs.length; i++) {
        tfs[i] = new JTextField(10);
    }For laying out the text fields, see: [http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/layout/using.html]

  • Is it possible to add a property using variable in variable name?

    I want to query for a list of virtual machines within a folder, then create a menu of the host names using forms.  Since the list of machines is subject to change, I want to build the list each time the script is run, rather than build off a static
    list.
    For each virtual machine I need to create the list of variables below:
    $hostnameX = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.checkbox
    $hostnameX.Location = New-Object System.Drawing.Size(10,20)
    $hostnameX.Size = New-Object System.Drawing.Size(100,20)
    $hostnameX.Checked = $true
    $hostnameX.Text = "Type"
    $hostnameX.Controls.Add($hostnameX)
    The location and size values need to be incremented but I think I can figure that part out.
    I can use New-Variable to generate the initial variable. But I receive errors using the same method to try to create a new property for the variable.
    $VMS = Get-Cluster MyCLUS | Get-vApp "My vApp" | Get-VM | Select Name,PowerState | Sort Name
    For ($i=0; $i -lt ($VMS.count); $i++)
    $VMS[$i].Name
    $VMGUEST = "$($VMS[$i].Name)" -replace("-","")
    New-Variable "CB$VMGUEST" "New-Object System.Windows.Forms.checkbox"
    New-Variable "CB$VMGUEST.Location" "New-Object System.Drawing.Size(10,20)"
    In the above, $CBVMGUEST1 =  New-Object System.Windows.Forms.checkbox which is what I want,  but $CBVMGUEST1.Location is not set.
    Is there way to add a property using a variable in the variable name?  Or any other suggestions on how to tackle this issue?

    Hi,
    maybe another approach is a bit easier.
    Use a hash-array like
    $CB = @{}
    $CB[$VMGUEST] = New-Object System.Windows.Forms....
    $CB[$VMGUEST].Location = New-Object System.Drawing....
    Mit freundlichen Grüßen Jens Kalski
    That's the correct answer.  Anytime you find yourself wanting to create variables named "Widget1", "Widget2", "Widget3", etc... it's a pretty clear indication that what you really need is a collection object of some sort.  That might be an array,
    a hashtable, or any other data structure for holding other objects, depending on your specific needs.

  • Creating variable names?

    hi all
    is it possible to dynamically create variable names so you can keep track of them?
    I have to generate the following code a number of times depending on a number the user has input. So ideally Id like to create
    variables whose names i can keep track of for later reuse
    eg horHatch1, horHatch2.... without hardcoding them in. is this possible?? are there any better ways of accomplishing this task?
    this code just draws and adds labels on an x axis.
    thanks
    Line2D.Double horHatch1 = new Line2D.Double(horAxis.getP1().getX() + horInterval,
                                                    horAxis.getP1().getY() - HatchLength/ 2,
                                                    horAxis.getP1().getX() + horInterval,
                                                    horAxis.getP1().getY() + HatchLength/2);
        graphics.draw(horHatch1);

    hi
    i used the following code
    but i need to convert Line"d to Line2d.Double as explained below
    for(int i=1; i<x+1; i++)
    Line2D.Double horHatch1 = new Line2D.Double(horAxis.getP1().getX() + horInterval*i,
                                                    horAxis.getP1().getY() - HatchLength/ 2,
                                                    horAxis.getP1().getX() + horInterval*i,
                                                    horAxis.getP1().getY() + HatchLength/2);
        graphics.draw(horHatch1);
         v.addElement(horHatch1);
    Add text to hatches
        decorateVerticalLine(graphics, horHatch1, "M");
        decorateVerticalLine(graphics, horHatch2, "T");
    decorateVerticalLine(graphics, (Line2D)v.elementAt(i), names.elementAt(nColumn).toString());
    //compiler complains that (Line2D)v.elementAt(i) is not of type java.awt.geom.Line2D.Double  but of   java.awt.geom.Line2Di tried :
    horizontalAxisTicks[i] =((Double)(Line2D)v.elementAt(i)).doubleValue()).getX1();
    but this isnt correct i dont think.

  • Variable name to string

    Hi, I'm really new to TestStand, so this is probably an easy question:
    I'm using TestStand 4.5 and I'm trying to convert the name of a variable, Locals.MaxArrayIndex, which is a numeric variable, into a String, Locals.VarString.
    I know that the Str() function can be used to convert a numeric into a String, but how can I store the actual words "Locals.MaxArrayIndex" in a string?
    Thanks!

    Hmmm...it works great for Parameters that are arrays, but for me it won't work if the Parameter is a numeric variable. Maybe I'm making a mistake somewhere else that I'm not picking up; so I attached the sequence file if you want to take a look at it.
    The issue arises in the 'Else' statement. I'm pretty sure the syntax in my function and popup are correct, but the String (ParamName) that is supposed to hold the value of the Parameter variable name (DataSelect) doesn't seem to ever be filled and outputted in the error message.
    I would really appreciate it if any of you guys could have a look at the file (I'm sure I'm making some kind of really rookie mistake)
    Thanks!

  • Truncated variable names in solver

    when many variables are created in the solver , upon entering the numeric mode are not displayed correctly , only 1 character and then three points is read, making it impossible to identify which variable it is , for example if more than one starts with the same letter: " S1c " and " S2c " are shown as " S ..." and " S ... "
    the equations:
    pic
    if I choose only one equation, and therefore few variables , the names are displayed correctly:
    pic
    if I choose 2 equations , there are a total of 8 variables and groups in 2 columns and variable names are truncated:
    pic
    pic
    as seen in this last image , you can not distinguish S1c and S2c .
    Obviously S1c is the first and the second S2c but this becomes much more complex when they increase the number of variables and equations.
    is there any way to change the view type ?
    sorry for my bad English.
    thank you very much in advance.

    OK, simple statement first:
    Integer does not equal string.
    You also seem to be tossing around "runtime" and "static" somewhat liberally. Once you wire an integer (be it a control or block diagram constant) to the case structure's selector, the cases can only take on integer values. This is by design. If you wire a string, the case items take on string values. If you wire an enum, the case items take on the enumeration values. Once you've defined a case structure's cases you can't change them at "runtime". This, by definition, is different code.
    That said, it seems to me that you're looking for an enum.

  • Oracle 11G and SqlDataSource: 'ORA-01036: illegal variable name/number'

    [Resolved - http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=2366331&#2366331]
    I've created a short video to explain my problem with Oracle and SqlDataSource. If you'd rather watch than read, go see the video at http://www.kencox.ca/video/oracelandsqldatasource.html.
    I'm trying to do some extremely simple drag and drop development in Visual Web Developer 2008 with the Oracle 11g database and ODP.NET. According to Oracle, "The data provider can be used with the latest .NET Framework 3.5 version. "
    The SELECT statement works fine, but any attempt to use UPDATE via the SQLDataSource UpdateCommand nets me the infamous 'ORA-01036: illegal variable name/number' error.
    I wouldn't mind using one of my MSDN Support Incidents to have Microsoft take a look at this issue, but I'm not sure the problem is Microsoft's. It seems like Oracle is doing a poor job in its Visual Studio integration.
    Question: Has anyone successfully used an UpdateCommand statement in SQLDataSource against Oracle 11g? If so, let me know!
    Below, you see the entire code as generated in Visual Web Developer 2008. To see it in action, check the video at http://www.kencox.ca/video/oracelandsqldatasource.html.

    Ken,
    One thing to be aware of is Microsoft has produced Visual Studio database tools and data provider for Oracle. In addition, Oracle has produced its own tools. Knowing which products you are using is important because you want to know which company you should be complaining about. :-)
    In your video, you are using all Microsoft tools and data provider, not Oracle's.
    I would recommend using Oracle Developer Tools (ODT) for VS and ODP.NET since these products are much better integrated with .NET and Oracle.
    ODP.NET uses Oracle.DataAccess.Client namespace. System.Data.OracleClient belongs to the MS provider for Oracle, which Mark pointed out. If you drag and drop DB objects using ODT, it will generate ODP.NET code for you (and give you more data source wizard options as well).
    You can download the latest 11g version of ODP.NET and ODT here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/odpnet/index.html
    These support .NET 3.5 and VS 2008.

  • QuickInfo shows a single letter instead of full variable name

    Hi,
    I have an isolated shell application based on VS2010 shell. The mouse over on a variable in debug mode gives the name of the variable and the value.
    Now, I have ported the application to isolated shell VS2013, now the mouse over on a variable is not identifying the entire variable name instead identifies only the single letter in the variable name.
    There has been no change in the source code.
    Is there any special handling required for the new isolated shell?

    How exactly did you "port" the application to the 2013 isolated shell?
    The tooltip feature you describe is implemented by a custom language service package. So I'd start looking there.
    I've never seen recommendations for porting from one version of the isolate shell to another. I typically just generate a new isolated shell package, then add in my various package implementations to the new solution, and add them to the ShellExtensionsVSIX
    manifest.
    Also, if you have a custom project type based upon MPF_Proj, you may also need to update those sources to the corresponding version of the MPF_Proj sources, as those are routinely updated to match up the major VS versions.
    Sincerely,
    Ed Dore
