Making link open new tab/window?

I am fairly new to dreamweaver (just started website construction this year, only go to it every other day) and in that time I believe I have already learned quite a bit. I already know how to use spry efficiently which I believe nobody else in the class does. There is one thing i want to learn but I have not found how to do it. I want to make it so that when you click on a link it will open that page in a new tab/a new wondow so that you will not be redirrected away from the site. Can I just get a simple answer how to do this? Like maybe I have to add something in the code like:
<div id="fullsize"><a href="link here"><strong>words here</strong></a> </div>
would I do something like:
<div id="fullsize"><a openinnewtab href="link here"><strong>words here</strong></a> </div>
I know it shouldnt be "openinnewtab" but I am just saying like would I put something in the code to make it open in a new tab?

But only if you aren't using an XHTML or strict doctype.  While the target attribute will still work on such pages, they won't validate.
I use Thierry's method to open new page/tab windows all the time -

  • Open link in new tab/window problem

I have the following problem: I have a menu with h:commandLinks and I use faces.config configurations for my navigation. When I choose to open a menu entry in a new window or a new page the old page is displayed and I have to click again on the menu entry in order to navigate to the new page.
Does anyone know what is causing this? How could I make it work so that the user gets the content of the desired page in the new tab/window?
    Thanks

    Hi,
sorry for the late response. I have h:messages on the page and I don't get any errors. I try to open the link so: right click on the link and then I choose "Open Link in New Tab" or "Open Link in New Window".
If I simply click on the link everything works fine and the new page is displayed but when I use the right click menu the same page is displayed and I have to click again to obtain the desired page.
    thanks

  • Right click 'Open link in new tab/window' help

Hi, since I updated my Safari to 6.1 last night (running on Lion) the right click options for "Open new link in tab..." have swapped around and it's only a small thing but it's already annoying me, anyway to swap them back around so 'open in new window' is the first option again instead of '... in new tab'? I've been opening new windows in tabs all night unknowningly.

Hi Andy. There's no way to change it back that I know of.

  • Link open new tab that is blank. Same linki works OK in IE

On different sites, I click on an link such as a date for a monthly bank statement. Then a new tab opens but remains blank. I open Internet Explorer, go to the same site and click on the link and it opens the monthly bank statement in a new tab OK. I allow 3rd party cookies etc. I have firefox 8.0 and OS is windows 7 home.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • AS3 rollover buttons-opening new tab/window?

I admit to being in WAY over my head here, but it seems like there should be an easy fix (yeah, right!)
    Here is my URL: http://www.rebeccadodelin.com/
I used AS3 to create my buttons, but when I click on them they open up new tabs or windows and I want then to just stay in the same tab. I got this AS for the buttons from a Flash workshop I took over the summer and I've tried a couple things I found online to change the target for the buttons, but I just got a bunch of errors. So now I'm kind of "afraid" of my AS :-(
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks so much!
    Rebecca

If you look up the navigateToURL function in the Flash documentation, it inlcudes all of the target options you have.  You want to use the "_self" option.

  • Openning link in new tab/window

How can a set a hotspot to open a new window and/or tab?
    Thank you,
    Suzie~Wow

    That's usually Shift-click, no?
The best way to do a new window open would be to use
    unobtrusive DOM
javascript coding. You can see a tutorial for that here -

  • Link opens new tab AND loads in current tab

My wife's iPhone 5 is doing something odd. if she clicks on a link, it opens in that tab AND opens it in an additional tab. is there any way to stop it from doing /both/ of those? one is enough!

    What site?
    What links?
I haven't seen such a problem on my iPhone 5.

  • Put back "Open Link in New Window" first and default, rather than "Open Link in New Tab" in Safari 6.1

I do not like the order of the context menu changes in Safari 6.1.  I have become accustomed to using "Open Link In New Window" first in the context list, rather than the new "Open Link In New Tab".  I do not wish to use Tabs.  How may I remove this?

Well, I solved it just after I posted this.  I opened up the Safari Preferences, then went to the TABS section, and set "Open pages in tabs instead of windows: to NEVER", and unchecked "⌘-click opens a link in a new tab".   That set it back to open in new windows.
Tabs work if I am making quick tabs to refer to something.  Horrible if I want to compare two websites side by side.  So, by disabling the auto TAB function, I'm back to the way I prefer my browser to work, rather than the way something thinks I ought to use it.
Don't care about having all my browsers behavior the same.  If I wanted that, I would have run those browsers.

  • How can I make "Open Link in New Tab" open the new tab in the same window, not a different window?

When I Ctrl-click a link and choose "Open Link in New Tab" it chooses to open the new tab in a different window (one that's already open) rather than opening the new tab in the same window. Even though the other window is minimized, it automatically gets restored and placed on top of the window I was in. This interferes with my context, forcing me to minimize the window again to get back to the one I was in before. I want the new tab to open in the same window, so I can still see the tab I was in. Some links seem to have the "Open Link in New Tab" behavior automatically, so I never know when I'm going to get thrown out of my current window. Very annoying.

If you have a mouse with a scroll button then try to middle click the link to open the link in a new tab.
It is also possible that the links use onclick JavaScript instead of a href to specify the action.

  • When clicking CTRL+Link my new tab opens in the background window, instead of the foreground window I'm using. Is there a way to make this work the way it used to, where the new tab always opens in whatever window I was currently using?

I use a web based software for work. I go to a web page listing all employees as links (Window A). When I click an employee link a new window opens (Window B). Window B contains links, i.e. Add Client, Change Address, Change Phone Number, Change Name, Upload Photo, etc... When I hold CTRL and left click the links in Window B, the new tab opens in Window A. I don't understand why this has changed, as I've been using this method to open new tabs in my current window in both of the previous versions of Firefox.

That didn't work, but thank you very much for the offer of help. I had already tried that option.
To give you an example of what I'm speaking, I found this page that recreates the scenario.
    1. Goto [http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm]
    2. Click the GO in the center of the box on their page (This creates a pop-up window with links to other programming pages)
    3. CTRL+left click any of those links. The page opens in the background/original window, not the pop up window where you are currently working. And, with your solution takes me back to that window and the new tab.

  • Right-clicking Open Link in New Tab or Window doesn't work

After upgrading to the latest version, 30.0, the right-click functions to Open link in New Tab or New Window stopped working. When I click the link that I would like to open in new tab or window, the right click window appears, I click on the desired function, and the right click window closes and nothing happens.
I restarted in safe mode and the problem remains. I am using Windows XP. I also tried uninstalling Firefox and then doing a clean re-install and that didn't help.
For now I went back to using version 29.0.1. Yes, I know that it isn't as safe but I can't use Version 30. without the right-click options!!!
I really wish the developers would focus on fixing bugs, vulnerabilities, etc. and leave the basic functions alone! The old saying if it isn't broken don't "fix" it!!!!!

This didn't fix the problem so I have decided to revert to the previous version: 24.6.0 esr. Maybe when version 31 or 32 come around I come back to the "latest" version?

  • Everytime I open a new window to browse, in this new window I would right click to open link in new tab but the new tab always shows up in the other window.

I would click a link which opens a new window. Then in this new window, I would right click to open link in new tab. The new tab does not show up in this new window. It instead shows up in the original browser window. How can I make the new tab show up in the same window?

Firefox did have a behavior where some new windows -- those considered to be dialogs -- could not have new tabs, so new tabs were diverted to the window from which the dialog was opened.
According to the bug tracking system, a fix is in the works:
[https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644729 644729 – Popup window with all toolbars visible causes new tabs to open in another browser window] referencing [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485237 485237 – Need to treat popups consistently].
That second ones says Target Milestone: Firefox 12, so the fix probably didn't make it into Firefox 11.
    WORKAROUNDS
That first bug says there is an add-on to work around this -- it enables the middle mouse button to open links in a dialog window: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug-586234-unfixer/ Bug 586234 Unfixer :: Add-ons for Firefox]. I haven't tried it myself.

  • Why is 'Open link in new tab' suddenly opening a new window?

When I right click, and choose 'Open link in new tab', it instead opens the link in a new window. This happened suddenly with seemingly no cause. I have checked and double checked the option "Open new windows in new tabs instead" but it was checked. How can I fix it?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

This code in userChrome.css will move "Open Link in New Window" to the top of the context menu.
    <pre>@namespace url("<a href="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul">http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul</a>"); /* only needed once */

the user jay_ff shows how to do it using the Menu Editor Add-on
    1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
    2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
    3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
    4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
    5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
