Making quicktime tutorials for web broadcast

I would like to create a series of 'movie' tutorials on various aspects of Photoshop. I would like to do voice-over what I am doing at the same time on the screen.
Is there a way for me to record my voice at the same time I am working on my (duo-core) iMac capturing both simultaneously then editing for final output as an MP4 file?
Might someone point this right-brainer to a tutorial that would help in this task? Perhaps there is a new book that goes into all the creative stuff one can do with Quicktime 7 and MP4 technology?
Thanks in advance
duo core iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You should get Snapz Pro X v2, it can record movies that include the microphone input:

  • Quicktime Export for web

i have exported a video for web using quicktime and when i try to upload it, i wont play... i have the video uploaded (the actual .mov) but i dont upload another file that is exported (the .m4v) because is like 200MB and the .mov is only 4KB. how can i make the player on the web, play the .mov file instead of the .m4v? hope u understand... Thanks in advance.

How to make it smaller in file size than your original 5.5 GB file?
You just did when you used the "Export for Web" feature and it was reduced to 200 MB's in file size.
200 MB's is still much too large for Web use as your viewers will not wait for your file to download.
Break up your 25 minute "masterpiece" into 5 minute "chunks" or compress it further by using:
Export > Movie to QuickTime Movie
Reduce the data rate, file dimensions and choose H.264 video codec and AAC audio. Forget "stereo" to reduce that part of the file. Reduce dimensions to reduce the video part of the file size. Cut the "frame rate" by 50% to make even a smaller file size. Your Web viewers will probably not notice.
Do some tests with a one minute sample file to learn what works best for your file. Compare the new exports (side by side) by using the "Play All Movies" feature of QuickTime Pro.
After a few sample exports you'll quickly see which data rate, frame rate and video compression codec works best for your file.

  • Quicktime Export For Web files inaccessible

I accidentally posted this in the QT for Windows section, but I'm a Mac guy.
This is totally bizarre. As of this afternoon, all of the QT files (generated with Export for Web from QT7.6) that I've posted over recent days and weeks, on multiple servers, played back by different computers at different locations, running QT 7.6.4 and 7.6.6, OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.3, WILL NOT PLAY. How is this possible?
If I connect directly to the original .mov file (as opposed to the "alias" .mov file generated by Export for Web), then it will play. If I connect to the .m4v file, my browser wants to download it, and then play it.
What's going on here? Apparently I'm not the only one to have this problem. Is this due to some sort of DRM update put in place on account of the iPad introduction? iTunes and QT have been updated on at least one of the computers I've tried this with, and it didn't make a difference.
    Hello??? Is anybody out there?

    Here are several examples:
    Posted on March 12: http://vista.adventureadv.com/jackall/Aragon-proof1/index.html
    Posted yesterday on my server:http://vista.adventureadv.com/jackall/cherry-proof1/index.html
Posted yesterday on my remote server (hosted by 1&1): http://www.adventureadv.com/cherry-proof1/index.html
In case you think I screwed up the original exported HTML file: http://vista.adventureadv.com/jackall/cherry-proof1/readme-cherry.html

Direct link to the QT file: http://vista.adventureadv.com/jackall/cherry-proof1/cherry-720.mov
Also, the server named vista is a Mac server running OSX Server 10.4-something - despite its name, it is not a Windows Vista machine.

  • Quicktime settings for web

I am making timelapse movies from a series of 5mp stills. What settings should I use for putting 30sec movies on the internet. I tried resizing in photoshop down to 320x240 about 15k per photo and it looks awful.

A 15 KB image file is kinda small by 2006 standards but if the file looked OK when viewed with Photoshop it should look the same in your Image Sequence .mov file made using QuickTime Pro.
Did you use the "Web safe" .jpg format in Photoshop or another file format (like .psd)?
Try these steps as a workaround:
Create your folder of sequentially named files using the .jpg format. Size them to 640X480 and target a file size in the 30 to 50 KB range.
If these look good in PS you can import to QuickTime. But here is the "trick":
Use a "Frames per Second" rate of 10 seconds per frame. Sounds odd but we can fix the file later.
Now you have a 640X480 .mov file that is encoded using the Photo-JPEG video codec that needs some more work.
Open any audio file and "cut" exactly 30 seconds. Use the right left arrow keys to "fine tune" and view the Movie Info window to confirm it's 30 seconds.
Save this as a new file (.mov).
Open your 300 second "video" movie and select all (Control-A) and then copy (Control-C).
Switch to your 30 second audio .mov file, select all and choose "Add to Selection & Scale (Edit menu).
Open the Movie Properties window (Control-J) and highlight the audio track. "Delete" the track.
Using the same Movie Properties window highlight the video track and use the "Visual Settings" to adjust the dimensions back down to 320X240.
Save As and check the box for "Self-Contained".
This should now give you a 320X240 "video" running at 30 fps. It should be in the 200-300 KB file size range.

  • Quicktime conversion for web...

    am usually good at this!
i have a quicktime movie, about 270 megs (short).
i want to post it on the web; i tried making an mp4; set it up in dreamweaver, uploaded to the web, and all i get is the "Q" symbol.
i tried changing "mp4" to "mov"; plays locally on my mac!
what settings do i use to get a smaller-file, half-size, qt movie on the website??
and should it be an mp4, or sorensen 3, or??
    thanks!

Please post a URL so we can check the page code and the .mp4 file.
270 MB's is not a small file. What software did you use to create it? What is its current size and what codecs were used? Use the Movie Info window to find out and post back.

  • Export 1280x720 sequence to quicktime movie for web

Hi, trying to export a quicktime that is 1280x720 59.94 at photo-jpeg and compress it for viewing/download over then net.
    Unfortunately, compressor keeps crashing.
What are the easiest settings to accomplish this with? I've tried exporting a self-contained movie and exporting to compressor from final cut but get the same results.
    Thanks for the help!

I typically used H.264 or Sorenson 3. And I use the dimensions 640x360 or 320x180. Try those and see what happens. PhotoJpeg isn't what is typically found on the web.
And I export a self contained file then bring it into compressor. Or use a Compressor Droplet I created. I love those.

  • Quicktime export for web with Rapidweaver

    Hi everyone,
I am here as a last resort in trying to get an answer to this problem that I have with understanding how to do this.As we know quicktime creates 3 video file for us to cater for different speed conection over the internet. Great. I have published my movie files on my Siteground server and I can play the ref/movie there with no problems. Great. Now in RW where would I put the code created by quicktime for the 'head' of the page and for the 'body' of the page??? I am having all sort of confusion issue as to what to do. I have contacted the RW team but they wont support a third party app. the forum has nothing to say so I am here hoping that I will strike lucky with some of you.
Thanks for all your time and support.

  • Recommended Quicktime settings for web-use

    I am preparing a standard definition video ( 640 x 480 )
about 7 minutes long to be used on a website.
Am I alright with H. 264 export as a Quicktime .mov file,
or are there other settings / means of compression that
    would be more favorable.
It is an older version of Final Cut - 5.1.4, and I am not seeing
    anything for Flash, etc.
Thanks for any help / tips,

Several threads discuss creating h.264, then renaming the file extension to .flv Seems to work for end users who have Flash v.9 or 10.
Never tried it myself, but check the link for additional info.

  • Using Compressor to create QuickTime file for Web

Have: a 2 minute clip, shot in HD, edited in FCP7. Exported it as a FCP QuickTime movie, 1080i60, size is 441MB.
Need to: take that QuickTime file into Compressor and create a much smaller file, which will ultimately be converted to Flash and posted on a Web site. Have tried various QuickTime outputs in Compressor -- the resulting files are either too large, blurry, or lose the widescreen aspect ratio.
    Please, help.

    Here's what I would try:
    QuickTime Movie: h.264 compression @ 1500 Kbps
    Screen Resolution: 640 x 360.
    Audio: AAC @ 128 Kbps.

  • Optimizing / compressing video for web with Quicktime

I have a ~70mb (3 minutes long) m4v video that I need to get to a much more reasonable file size for playing on a site that will primarily be accessed via iPad.
I don't know if it matters, but the video will need to play automatically upon page load.
I've read through a few tutorials for doing this with Quicktime, however I think I'm missing something..
From the Export pop-up menu, there should seemingly be an option to choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie." I have only 480p and iPod/iPhone/iPad options(which I believe would result in a viewing frame that is too small).
How can I proceed with web-optimizing this file in Quicktime? (Or is there a better solution? I tried Sorenson Squeeze, but that had a large watermark..)

I have a ~70mb (3 minutes long) m4v video that I need to get to a much more reasonable file size for playing on a site that will primarily be accessed via iPad.
File size is directly proportional to the combined total data rate of your file. If you want a smaller file, then you need to reduce the audio + video data rate of the file. Unfortunately, overly reducing the data rate can adversely affect the audio/video quality of the file. Depending on the encode settings (data rate, encode matrix dimensions, display dimensions, entropy option, intra/inter frame options, number of encode passes, etc.), user tolerance for minimum quality level, the specific target ISP speeds required, application to be used, etc., the possibilities are relatively endless. Basically, the file you describe above has a combined total data rate on the order of 3.1 Mbps. Such a data rate might be considered low for a full 1080p file, adequate for a 720p file, or excessive for a VGA file depending on the graphic complexity of the file. In short, it is difficult to properly answer your question without additional information or actually seeing the file in question. (I.e., proper encoding of content is as much an art as a science.)
I don't know if it matters, but the video will need to play automatically upon page load.
It may matter depending on how the web site is coded and/or how the content is to be accessed by the target iPad device.
From the Export pop-up menu, there should seemingly be an option to choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie." I have only 480p and iPod/iPhone/iPad options(which I believe would result in a viewing frame that is too small).
The option and tutorial you reference require the use of QT 7 Pro which the option you reference sounds nore like a QT X player export option. (Once, again, what you can do will depend on the software you are trying to use to create your file and a 480p file could normally be anything from an 853x480 (16:9 aspect) file to a 640x480 (4:3 aspect) file or an anamorphic 720x480 file displaying in either the 16:9 or 4:3 aspect. So I really don't know what you consider a "small" viewing frame.
How can I proceed with web-optimizing this file in Quicktime? (Or is there a better solution? I tried Sorenson Squeeze, but that had a large watermark..)
As previously mentioned, there are many applications that can be used here—QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, QT X, HandBrake, etc. to name just a few. I personally would recommend the free HandBrake app since it offers both manual and automatic preset options, as well as, allowing you to create anamorphic or non-anamorphic encodes targeting either a fixed level of quality or a target file size depening on your needs. Unfortunately, the more options you have, the more decisions you need to make which means the more you need to critically analyze your target needs/requirements—which is frequently something many video users are trying to avoid.
Basically, if you want more specific advice, you will first have to better define your specific needs here.

  • Photoshop crashes when I try and save for web and devices. Making the image size smaller does not help.

I'm trying to make a lopping .gif from an animation that I made. It's 147 total frames. It's crashed about 6 times now every time I either try and Save for Web or even just save the document on my desktop so in case it crashes I can reopen PS and recover it. Making the image size smaller (original size is 1920 x 1080 with resolution 72) does not help, it still makes the *ding* error when I attempt to save. I made the image more than half of the original size and the Save for Web box actually came up that time, but when I tried clicking save it said there was an error and PS crashed without warning.

Look at the crash report for your Photoshop crashes see what they show

  • Best way to encode Quicktime file for the web?

Hello all and thanks in advance for your help with this problem.
I need to know the best way to encode a quicktime clip for the web.
    This was my first try:
    http://www.denmothers.net/trailer-big.htm
It works fine in safari, firefox, and ie for mac, provided they have quicktime 6 or later but it seems not to work on pc browsers. The file is encoded as an .mp4 using compressor and played with the browser's quicktime plugin. I've read that encoding files as a .mov provides greater compatibility but when i compress it as a .mov using the mpeg4 codec the file sizes are huge and when i use the photo-jpeg codec the quality is poor. h.264 looks great and has low file sizes but then my viewers have to have quicktime 7 which i think is too limiting because many will have older computers.
How should I encode my file such that it works best across browsers and platforms and has the highest quality at the lowest size?
    Best,
    Keegan

If you open an .mp4 file in quicktime pro you can then select File->Save-As and you are presented with two options:
Save as self-contained: This will create a .mov that is the same size as your .mp4 but is playable on any system w/ QuickTime 6 and the Mpeg-4 codec. (PC's included).
Save as reference: This will create a small (>500kb) file that will simply reference the .mp4. If they're in the same folder the .mov created will open the .mp4. Without the .mp4 the .mov in this case is useless.
For what you're trying to do I suggest going with self-contained.

  • Using QuickTime Player's 'Save for Web' feature in iWeb

I'm using iWeb (3.0.3) to create a site. I've also used the QuickTime Player (10) feature "Save for Web" command to save optimized versions (for iPhone and desktop) of a clip I'm using in my site. I want to keep the nice features of the QT Save for Web, i.e., the poster frame and the nicer QT controller.
I've managed to get everything hooked up right (using an HTML snippet in iWeb and hand-editing the page's html file to add the lines to <head> that the Save for Web's instructions specify. Yay!
All good so far. When I view the page in Safari, the poster frame shows up perfectly. But when I click on it, Safari swaps in a new page (frameset?), which loses all the navigational stuff I have on the "real" page. The Save for Web's instruction html page doesn't do this -- why is it happening in the iWeb page? I've tried stripping stuff out of the iWeb-generated page, but no luck.
Please help ... I've spent HOURS trying to figure this out, and I'm at my wit's end!!
(Additionally, if someone can tell me where I can put the 4 files that the Save for Web command creates so that iWeb doesn't wipe them everytime I publish, I would be a very happy man!!

This demo page has instructions on how to use that feature: #18 - Adding Movie/Video File to iWeb Page via Export for Web in Quicktime Player.
This demo page has an example of how it looks: Using a Movie Exported Out of Quicktime Player via “Export for Web”

  • Using Quicktime's "Export for Web" feature in iWeb?

    Greetings,
Does anyone know if this is possible within iWeb, that is, to use movies created using Quicktime's "Export to Web" feature, which really seems to deliver superior movie quality?
    Much appreciated,
    DaveB

Thanks, good stuff, though I'm still having a small problem with this. I'm getting a gray line around the top and left of my movie and the right side of the player is getting cut off. When I try to make the width larger, it just moves the gray line further to the left.
    Any ideas?
