Making section of private site publicly visible

I have one section of an otherwise private iTunes U site that I would like to make visible, because it contains content from our university's radio station and student newspaper that they would like the public to be able to see.
I have set the All and Unauthenticated credentials to have download access on the main site welcome page, and then made sure that this only cascades down to that section and the course pages it contains. I have overridden this download access for All and Unauthenticated to give them no access to other sections, divisions, and course pages.
I am able to link directly to the course pages for the radio station and the newspaper and view/download content without needing to log in. However, when I access the main site welcome page without logging in, all that shows up is my header graphic and my links boxes. The section that I am trying to make public and the course pages it contains do not show up on the main site page as I think they should.
Can anyone help?

Assosciation private and public

I would like to have some responses from you guys. From OOAD point of view what are the considerations to be kept in mind before making an assosciation private or public.
Any ideas would be welcome

Containment associations will most often be private.
Consider the following:
Class Node is to be kept in a list which Class A manages.
First example.
Class Node is defined as a private inner class of Class A. Class A keeps a list of Nodes using a private instantiation of the ArrayList class. Node is private. The ArrayList is private. So when diagramming it the association is certainly private.
Node is wholly owned and contained by A. If A is deleted then all Nodes are deleted.
In this case one might make the point that because this is entirely private that it implementation rather than design. So it shouldn't be diagrammed at all. But sometimes it is necessary to do this to show how it will meet the needs of the system (or because a junior programmer is doing the coding and you want it to be painfully obvious.)
Second example
Class Node is a public class (not part of Class A.) Class A keeps a list of Nodes using a private instantiation of the ArrayList class. So when diagramming it the association is certainly private.
Again in this case A owns all of the Nodes.
Again the association could be consider an implementation detail (diagram is not necessary.) But because there are now external users, it might be more relevant to detail explicitly that a list of these is being kept.
For the above two examples 'private' might also serve the need of the code generation capability of the two. Neither of the above associations should ever be implemented publicly.
Third example
A variation of the examples above is where the association is to be managed by one or more external systems. If there is one external system then it can own it. But if there is more than one, then the assocation must be public.
In this case it is certainly possible (and likely) that A does not own the Nodes that it is associated with.
Fourth example
If the relationship between A to Node is many to many than the association is always external to A and Node. So unless it is explicitly owned by a single external system it must be public. Never make the mistake of trying to have either class try to own it.
In this case A never owns the Nodes that it is assocated with.

Need to move old private site to public site manager

Rutgers would like to move all or at least most of the content of our old private site to public site manager. How do I do that?

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

Is it possible to move content between private and public sites after publishing the latter?

Hi. Is anyone else in this position? My institution kept its original iTunes U site after migrating our public content to the new public site last year. We now have separate public and private (university log-in only) sites and must maintain both. The Public Site Administrator allowed the copying of existing content from the original iTunes U site to the new public site, but ONLY prior to publication of the public site. I have two related questions for the community:
1) How is it possible to maintain a workflow in which faculty create a course for the private iTunes U site (wanting to keep the content restricted to our students while the course is live), but then move the content over to the public site once the semester ends?
2) With the new app for Courses and the Course Manager on the public site, what do we do with the courses already created by faculty as Collections (either in the public or private sites)?
I hope there are folks out there that can help.

Setting up a publically-visible home web server w/ DSL residential?

Is there a how-to guide for setting up a small publically-visible home web server, basically for testing purposes?
I have a DSL modem, Westell.
The web server software is running and I can see the site on my home network, but everyone else on the Internet gets a timeout. The server is not reachable.
When I run traceroutes, the Modem's IP address does not show a timeout, but the Computer's IP address does show a timeout. This is with all firewall software disabled.
Can anyone help?

Since you are using this server for testing, why does it have to be publically-visible?
In the meantime as I wait for that reply to my question, pre-check list for allowing user from the net to connect you:
#1 The Default Gateway on your computer is the same IP Address as the Westell A90-750015-07?
For example, if on Windows XP
a) Go to Start -> Run.
b) Type in cmd and press enter.
c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
#2 In the router go to Advanced -> Private LAN
#3 What is the Starting and Ending IP Address?
#4 In the router go to Advanced -> Universal Plug and Play
#5 If you do not have at least two game consoles behind this two router, turn off UPnP in the router.
By game console, a special type of computer with no keyboard or mouse (and it/they are usually connected to a TV).
#6 In the router go to System Monitoring -> Gateway Status
#7 With another web browser Window OR Tab, go to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
#8 Below the text that says The text below might uniquely identify you on the Internet is an IP Address.
#9 In the web browser window or tab, that is still looking in the router, you should see that same IP Address.

Help finishing up my first flash site - using navigation to display different sections of the site?

not sure what to do next in regards to navigating through the site.
I have different sections, home, info, hardware, equipment, etc,
but im not sure how to make each section appear when you click the
corresponding navigation link. i have an idea but im not sure how
to execute it.
Should i make a movie clip for each section (home, info,
hardware, contact), then place each movie clip in its own frame on
the main time line, and on each navigation link button (each one is
a movie clip) use action script and put a gotoAndPlay() code with
the frame number of the corresponding section? so when you click
it, it goes to that frame which has the movie clip that has the
content for that part of site, say contact, or info?? if so how can
i do this?

Targeting specific timelines in a flash movie can be daunting
in the beginning. But if you start from the main timeline (_root)
and build brom there, it becomes easier to understand.
For eg:
If you have 2 movieclips on your main timeline (_root).
Navigation and Pages.
Inside Navigation you have the buttons, and each button is a
separate movieclip.
Inside Pages you have each page, each a separate movieclip.
to target a specific page number, from a button, there are 2
ways you can go about it. The method that Ned suggested is called
RELATIVE.
-meaning that you target FROM WHERE YOU ARE.
the second method is ABSOLUTE.
-meaning you target FROM MAIN TIMELINE.
Relative is good, but can be confusing when using dot syntax.
Absolute is straight forward and easy to understand, and can
be used from anywhere in the whole movie. The downside, is that it
generally requires a bit more typing.
In the example I stated above, it does not require more
typing. simply say:
_root.page.gotoAndStop(number);
This line can be used from anywhere in your movie, at any
timeline depth, and will work with no worries.
You can also have ALL navigation code on the main timeline on
the first frame. Simply designate the path to the specific button
like so:
navigation.home_btn.onPress = function(){
doSomething;
this tells Flash that the button named "home_btn" located
inside the movieclip called "navigation" will have to doSomething
when Pressed.
I hope this helps you understand targeting a bit more.

We prepared simple Word Press web site. We used a Revolution slider plugin with HTML5 video layer. It works properly on Chrome, Safari, older Mozilla FF.
But we had a problem on PC computers with FF 29.0 30.0 – after reinstall of browser everthing seems to be OK. The slider works. Unfortunately even the reinstallation on Mac computers does not help. There is no visible video on Mac FF 30.0.
We are looking for some information what we can do to solve this problem. Could you help?

Property semantics - private vs public APIs

Hi,
Question about property directives and how to enable separate public and private semantics.
In my class's public interface I would like a property to be read only so I declare it as follows:
@property (readonly) someproperty;
However, within the class I would like to set the property and have the convenience of retain being called and set to nil through the property so the release happens. So I would do the following:
@property (retain) someproperty;
Now the two semantics are not entirely mutually exclusive. I could do the following:
@property (readonly , retain) someproperty;
However, external users of the class can use the setter which is not what is intended. Coming from a Java and C# background it seems that objecive-c does not provide as robust a syntax for making clean distinctions between public and private interfaces.
What strategies can you suggest to achieve my goals of keeping my private and public semantics and usage clear? Any good web resources on the broader subject of best practices in API design in objective-c?

Yes class-dump can always be used to generate public interfaces in a hostile world but that's not really the point. The issue is how to generate clean interfaces for a team of software developers. Anyway after talking to Matt, I have answered my own question: a synthetic property, a category plus a hand coded setter will make this work. Once the bug in @synthesize is fixed this will be nice solution to the problem.
Here are a few bits to illustrate:

How do I apply for iTunes U private site?

I am going crazy trying to figure out how to apply for a private site. My instructors want their class content restricted to their students. We have some public content also, but I am very confused how this works.
I have looked everywhere for a separate private site application. The adminstrators guide said it could be applied for at the same time as the public site but I couldn't figure it out.
Please help!

I believe classes are created private by default, so your instructiors will start with a private class. As I understand it, only you (as an admin) have the power to make a particular course public.

Unable to Login To iTunes U Private Site

As of this morning we are experiencing an issue on campus where no one is able to view any course material in iTunes U. Upon logging in, users are being redirected to the public site, as opposed to the private site. Nothing in our configuration has changed, so we're unsure why this is happening. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would recommend appending the debug suffix to your transfer script and confirming that the time stamp falls within a 90 second window of our time servers. It is often the case that when users are suddenly no longer able to access a private iTunes U site and no change has been made to the resource that generates the authorization token, there is a disparity between the time-stamp provided by the system generating the token and Apple's time servers, greater than 90 seconds.

URL for a generic student acct to open private site possible?

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I couldn't find any related information in these boards or in the admin guide. We're in the process of setting up both public and private sites. We want our students to be able to access our iTunes U private site with an URL from our private student portal. Is it possible to set up just one generic student account for this purpose?

I'm not sure I'm following you here ... lemme restate your question the way I'm reading it. If I'm not reading you correctly, just say and I and the other iTunes U gurus will try to help.
It "sounds" to me as if you're asking just to have a single URL ... a URL that never changes ... on your web portal to your private site. You'd authenticate your people (using your authentication system), but you would, essentially, have a very simple transfer setup. It'd work like this:
1. Students get to your private website's login page.
2. They authenticate.
3. If their authentication is successful, you go to another page with a single static link (a link that never changes) that gets students into your iTunes U site with a "generic" student identity.
If that's the case, the basic problem that you have is that iTunes U URLs that have credentials attached are timed ... they only live for 90 seconds ... and you have to sign the URL with a time stamp (it's also encrypted in your signature).

It seems to refer to the ‘old’ iTunes U instead of the new public site manager. I must admit I find the iTunes U documentation quite consfusing and unitiuative. The web layout of the PSM and Admin guide in particular is very poor.
I was looking for some information on iTunes U private sites, specifically how they differ from public sites and how to go about setting one up, but I can’t seem to find any information at all in the iTunes U documentation. Could someone point in the right direction?

Transfer script for private site has stopped working

We had split our vintage iTunes U site into a new Public site - keeping the original access-controlled content as a 'private' site - a few months ago. We had a transfer script in place for the original site, which was used to direct users to course materials with specific credentials supplied to control access. The transfer script has stopped working at some point in recent weeks - we hadn't modified it for a quite a while, so I'm guessing that it has stopped working due to some change in the destination url. I couldn't find documentation indicating any changes to the transfer script so that it finds the original site rather than the new Public site - the site url in the script is "https://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/scu.edu", which will open the new public site. If anyone has a suggestion for what we might try to get the script working again, it would be much appreciated.

We're not including the destination variable in the form post that calls our cgi script. I can't get to the Edit Site Settings window in the original iTunes U store - we use this transfer script to handle the admin access, and it isn't working for that either. I've been testing a very simple version of this Perl script from a fresh copy of the sample files collection, and with debugging enabled it looks like it is getting everything except for a current time - it tells me that the time is valid, but is "too far in the past" and so it doesn't include the otherwise valid identity and credential values. I'm checking with our system administrators to verify that our server's time is accurate. Thanks for the follow-up response.

Private Site Access

I am in the beginning stages of implementing iTunes U for my institution. We are implementing both the public and private site.I was wondering in relation to the private site do people have any advice on what is the best way to authenticate students and teachers for viewing content. Do people start from scratch and create a new web portal or do you use something like moodle or blackboard. We are hoping to avoid using moodle to authenticate users.
Any advice or issues that people have encountered when setting up a private site would be greatly appreciated.

The easiest way would be to integrate the iTunes U-authentication into the system already at work at your campus. That system probably has data like enrolled courses etc. already in its database, giving you a great point to start. It heavily depends on the granularity you are looking for, though.
