Making SGA as big as possible always a good idea ?

Hello,
during trying to learn about oracle i came across the following question:
Lets say i have a rather small database, with all datafiles together not larger than 1GB. And lets assume further that this database should run on a server with 8GB of ram. So, the OS will take some part of the 8GB, but there will be a lot of space left.
Is there any reason for not making the SGA very big, like lets say 1GB ? I think i remember to have read about "lots of logical reads" as a reason for not "oversizing" the SGA at some place on the internet, but as i'm a beginner i may have got that wrong...

Hans,
In general, for versions frmo 8i onwards, the size of the buffer cache shouldn't make any difference to the time it takes to determine the blocks that need to be written as Oracle introduced the "checkpoint queue" in 8i. When a block first becomes dirty it is appended to the queue, so the database writer only has to walk the queue in order to find blocks that need to be written.
One of the threats comes from consistent read copies - if you have an excessively large buffer you may find extreme numbers of copies of the same block building up in the cache (despite the notional limit of 6 set by the _db_block_max_cr_dba parameter). Since all the copies will be covered by the same cache buffers chains latch, processes may start to hold the latch for long periods of time as they search the chain for the correct copy.
Another threat comes from dropping or truncating objects - Oracle needs to search the buffer for CLEAN blocks from the object and, prior to 10g (possibly 10.2), there was no really quick way to perform this search. 10g maintains an "object queue" for each object in the cache, and that is supposed to make this task more efficient.
In the case of the original poster - a 1GB database with 8GB of RAM - it's almost guaranteed that a fully cached database will be beneficial i.e. 1GB of db_cache_size - but keeping an eye open for long waits on the cache buffers chains latch.

  • Making JPanel as big as possible

    Hi there,
    I have a GUI divided in two JPanel: topJPanle and buttonsJPanel.
    When you click in one of the buttons, a different JPanel will be displayed on the topJPanel. Those JPanels are constructed by a different class each time, such as:
    public class MyJPanel extends JPanel
         public MyJPanel()
              JPanel p = new JPanel() ;
              p.setLayout(new BorderLayout() ) ;
              p.add( new JButton ("North" ), BorderLayout.NORTH ) ;
              p.add( new JButton ("West" ), BorderLayout.WEST ) ;
              p.add( new JButton ("East" ), BorderLayout.EAST ) ;
              p.add( new JButton ("South" ), BorderLayout.SOUTH ) ;
              p.add( new JButton ("Center" ), BorderLayout.CENTER ) ;
              add(p) ;
              p.setSize(p.getToolkit().getScreenSize()) ;
              setVisible(false) ;
    }My problem is that I'd like the topJPanel to be completly filled by the newly created JPanels. I thought that with the line:
    p.setSize(p.getToolkit().getScreenSize()) ;I'd be able to do it, but it doesn't work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Fernando

    Fernando,
    that would make the panel the size of the screen, which is probably not what you want.
    to set the size of a JPanel you would use setPreferredSize() instead. but, this will only tell the container of the JPanel what size you would like to have. it does not guarantee that your panel would get it.
    so in your case the question is, what layout manager does your panel container have. you would set the parameters there and your panel will get whatever the container layout manager has to offer.

    When exporting to a DVD from Final Cut Pro X, what settings are there to make sure you making the highest quality DVD possible?

    There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
    Does it play in your Mac?
    What brand of disks are you using?

  • I keep receiving this message "the disc was not ejected properly. if possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off"

    i keep receiving this message "the disc was not ejected properly. if    possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off"

    I had this problem too, where it seemed I couldn't go eight hours without the Duo drives dropping and getting the "disc was not ejected properly" error message.
    I tried the following and so far it seems to have fixed the problem:
    In System Preferences > EnergySaver, make sure the setting “Put hard disks to sleep when possible" is unchecked.
    I did this only on the Power Adaptor tab, but you might want to uncheck the setting on the Battery tab as well to be safe. (In my case, the Duo drives are unlikely to be attached when I’m running on battery, so I left the setting checked for the Battery tab so that the system can still power down the internal drive.)
    Since I made the above change ten days ago, the Duo disks have not dropped, even when I left the system on with the Duo disks connected for a couple of days.
    FYI I have the Duo set up with two RAID 1 sets spanning the two drives. I'm using Mavericks 10.9.4.

  • Possibility of reversing Goods issue and delivery of one line item

    Hi experts,
    Is there a possibility of reversing Goods issue for only one line item and also the delviery for that line item so that i can make changes in the sales order for that line item only.
    Appreciate your response.
    Regards,
    krishna

    Hi Laxmipathi & Rithvika,
    Basically the issue is in the sales order there are around 90 line items out of which most of them has been processed the delivery and GI and even invoices has been made for some.
    While doing so, there are about 5-6 delivery docs has been created for the 90 line items.
    Now, we need to change some data for few line items , for this we dont want to do reversal for all the line items and again do a delivery and PGI as these line items are in various delivery docs.
    Let me know , if there is anyother way of doing it or we should follow the normal process of doing it all again.
    Regards,
    krishna

    My phone keeps searching when I am at home and always have good service; I also can't get Wi-fi.

    Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Connections.
    Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these steps in order until the problem is resolved.

  • Why no body try to help me its possible no body has idea about how to save

    why no body try to help me its possible no body has idea about how to save report updating on report builder 10g

    Hello,
    In order to check if the Reports executed is the one you have modified, I suggest to copy the Reports in a specific directory (/tmp on UNIX , c:\temp on Window) and execute the Reports providing the "full path name " :
    report=/tmp/myreport.rdf
    If you can see the modifications you have done when executing the reports like this, check if there is a REP with the same name , check if the Reports you have modified is the first with this name in the REPORTS_PATH

  • Making a file the smallest possible

    I have a 48 minute podcast. How can I make that file the smallest possible for transferring the data? It has voice and music.

    Christopher,
    I thought I had it. But I don't. I can compres in iTunes
    I can convert to MP3, but once I've done that I don't know how to share that to iWeb.
    When I put that MP3 file in GB and then try to export to iWeb I get a message I don't like. (see below) it indicates the file is big.
    And I don't know what AAC compression is, I don't see AAC in Preferences
    I see General, Audio/midi, loops, export, and advanced
    When I go to GB prefs > Export > I have
    GB pref > Export > Audio podcast settings
    or
    GB pref > Export > movie settings
    in Audio Podcast Setting I have the lowest setting Mono podcast with extimated size of 11.4 MB
    which I set, However
    once I share podcast to iWeb, after it says
    "Kick off Again.m4a is a very large file.
    Adding "Kick off Again.m4a" to your page may result in long download times for website visitors. FOr best performance, your move file should be no larger than 10MB. You can use iMovie's Quick TIme web exporting setting to reduce the file size."
    I've looked at iMovie and Quick time preferences and don't see where to make a change in those preferences.
    Also I don't know how large the file is once it is in iWeb. So I don't know if it is just 11MB or much bigger.
    I'm getting closer but not where I need to be in my understanding of how all this works. You are so kind in helping me. thanks

    Judging by all the posts on the forum, there seems to be an issue at Apple's end, although they have made no announcement on their status page. Unfortunately, we may have to wait until Apple is more forthcoming with information.
