Making still images 'move'

There is a video editing effect I see in use that takes a still image within a timeline and adds the perception of motion. May only move a few pixels over a designated period of time but brings the image to life. Is the effect available in any version of elements - right now I'm using Vista with elements 3. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. This is a repository for articles on how to do things. Maybe our MOD, Steve Grisetti, can move this out to the main forum, where you will get much more traffic.
Now, if I understand, what you wish to do is animate your still images. That is easily done with the Pan & Zoom of the stills. There are some Presets in PrE, but I use Keyframes to animate the fixed Effect>Motion>Position and Motion>Scale for this. It is often called the Ken Burns Effect.
Also, make sure that your still images are sized appropriately in, say PS/PSE. This ARTICLE will give you some tips.
Good luck, and hope that it helps,

It am not understanding clearly what program is not closing
    Photoshop Elements
    or
    Premiere Elements
There is the AdobePremiereElements.exe for Premiere Elements (video editing) and the PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe for Photoshop Elements (photo editing).
Right now you keep mentioning Premiere Elements, but I am seeing your description more like Photoshop Elements.
Please clarify so that we can focus on the correct program and try to resolve its problems.

  • Making a 'Movie' from large number of 'still images?'

    I have a 2011 15" MacBook Pro with Lion. I have QuickTime Player 10.1.
I want to make a 'movie' showing our new company product rotating on its axis. The raw material would be still images, each taken from a slightly different angle. I thought QuickTime Pro would be the tool for this, but apparently it no longer exists? Can I accomplish the same thing in iMovie?
    Suggestions most welcome.
    Thank you!

Thank you, AppleMan! I just wanted to make sure that I'm OK buying this because the App Store tells me this as a warning:
Please note: Your QuickTime 7 Pro registration code only works with QuickTime 7. Be sure you have downloaded and installed QuickTime 7 Player before you enter your QuickTime 7 Pro registration code.
So, since I have QuickTime Player 10.1 I wanted to confirm that this isn't a roadblock.

  • Still images turn to black backgrounds in the exported movie

I am still using Premiere 2.0. I produced a ca. 25 min project with still images at the beginning and at the end and short videoclips in between. Still images are only ca. 40-50 kB large. When working on it I occasionally got a few problems (e.g. an audio transition across two clips was making Premiere hanging up) but I could easily get around them and successfully preview the project and export it to a folder and directly to a DVD. However, when viewing the movie on TV I found out that almost all (BUT NOT ALL!) the still images had turned into black backgrounds. I have exported the movie as MPEG, more still images were fine but not all of them. I have tried to drastically reduce the number of still images (max 5) but nome of them were fine. I do not have any error message and this problem is driving me crazy! Does anyone have a brilliant idea?
Last year I bought the new version of Premiere (3.0 I believe, surely not 7.0) but I stopped using it after one week because there was no way to successfully export the project I was working on. I made several videos, always got problems but so far I always found a solution on Premiere forum. Hope this time too!
    Many thanks for the attention

Try sizing your photos to 1000x750 pixels in size.
Also, right-click on each photo on the timeline and select Field Options and check the Flicker Removal box.
These will give you the best quality.
I am also concerned, however, that you are having technical problems and, especially, that you can not use a newer version of the program.
I'd recommend you install the latest version of Quicktime and the newest RealTek drivers, as we recommend in our FAQ.

  • Best practices for creating movie from still images?

I have created an architectural model in *someone else's* software, and animated a camera in *someone else's* software, and rendered that out to still images.  I rendered every 5th frame (for a total of 401 frames) in order to save time on rendering.  My goal is to create a short movie (2 minutes) of the camera flying around the building.
When I imported all of the images, I stretched the duration so that they equally fit the 2 minutes, and used the keyframe assistant to sequence the layers.  Now that I've done that, the movie is choppy (as I expected it to be, since I only rendered every 5th frame).  Does anyone have suggestions as to what effect or transition can be used to smooth the sequence out?  Or am I living in a dreamland and I need to go back and render every single frame?  Is this even the software I should be using?  I'm obviously a n00b, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Using After Effects CS4 (9.0.0.346) on Windows 7 64-bit

Or am I living in a dreamland and I need to go back and render every single frame?
You are. There is no effect that could automatically synthesize those missing frames even halfway realistically. Timewarp and Twixtor are only gonna make things look like a smear even with a lot of tweaking. By the time you have tweaked their settings and done all your masking and otehr corrections, your 3D render with all frames will be finished just as well and offer better quality.

  • Making a 300 image "movie"

My project is to make a DVD containing 300+ still images (from a digital camera) with timed music with 4 chapters. I'm using iMovie 09 and iDVD 09. I know iDVD can do slide shows but I have too many stills. I authored the show in iMovie 09 but when I get near 100 stills (with transitions, Ken Burns & other effects) in the project, iMovie gets a little unstable, slows down and sometimes crashes from writing too many "commands" to the "assembly file" (for lack of better words). So I make 4 separate iMovies and it stays very stable. I want the entire show to "play all" AND want to be able to pick the 4 chapters from a DVD sub-menu.
If I "share" the iMovies to "large media browser", I can import them into iDVD but it won't play all 4 in sequence as one show. I can drop each iMovie into a 4 cell iDVD "slide show" and they can play fine but I have no chapters and no ability to "PAUSE" or "FAST FORWARD". The image quality is great going from iMovie - share to (large) browser - import to DVD - and author using "High Quality" setting for the 70 minute show.
So to get chapters, I exported the 4 individual iMovies to a QT container using AIC (960x540). Then I re-import them into a new iMovie project, place them in sequence and place my chapter markers. ( I don't own QT Pro.) This will "sew them together" to one big movie with markers. Then send it direct to new iDVD project, set up my chapter sub-menu and burn a disc. The image quality is much degraded and noticeably poorer when the DVD is played. I tried exporting the 4 mini-movies using H.264 "Best Quality" codec and I get the same thing - poor image quality. .dv export wouldn't be any better, I'm thinking.
Took weeks to make the 4 individual iMovies, so I can't start over in iMovie (HD) 06, which I still own.
What am I doing wrong? I thought exporting and re-importing would be close to "loss free". Would you suggest doing my "sewing" and chapter marking in iMovie 06 and send it to iDVD from there? Does iMovie 09 drop alternate scans when exporting to QT?
Again, sending one of the mini-movies to media browser for iDVD and the images look great even when I use "Best Performance" instead of "High Quality". Export and re-import in iMovie 09 and it looks "crummy" (technical term for an expletive). Also noticed a little drop in audio volume in the movie compared to the menu music volume. Is this an expected result of my double path process?
TIA for your expert suggestion of how to do this. Thanks

.. QUESTION: When does iMovie 09 drop alternate scan lines? At ALL exporting? (Even to QT?)
    it drops..
    • NOT on import = all clips in Events contain 100% quality, whatever you do in Projects..
    • NOT if you use speed, dissolve or fade ONLY in a Project
    • ALLWAYS, if you use any OTHER 'effect' (e.g. page curl, a map, a background, any title), on ANY clip in the Project.. therefor on any export setting
the intended workflow is, you shouldn't export manually, but Share to MediaBrowser (=which creates a 540/h264file.. ), which appears in the Media/iM tab in iDVD.. you've tried that way?
    did I mention my suade .. ?
    consider:
    • iDVD creates videoDVD, which has - by standards - 720x480.. a fraction of your original pics and what your Mac's screen offer..
    • watching such a disk on a computer or HiDef-flatscreen in 'fullscreen mode' means, each pixel gets zoomed by some factor of up to 4 .. => 'blocky', pixelated look.
    • for finally judging pic quality, you should use a 'tube'/CRT TV ..

  • Can I capture a still image from a quicktime movie?

Can I capture a still image from a quicktime movie?

Yes. But how you do it depends on your version of quicktime.
If you have the pro version, you can easily use the "Export" option to output the video as a series of images.
For the basic version of quicktime, or if you want to quickly take make a still image of a single frame, you could just use the "Grab" application in OSX to take a screen shot.

  • Speeding up / Slowing down beginning movements of still images

I want to "exponentialize" moves when I use still images. I want to create non-linear speed up and slow downs at the beginning or end of my movement. Does FCE do this? Where? I know Adobe Premiere used to do it?
    Any Suggestions?
    ~Mark

In FCP you can ease scale, rotation and most other keyframable values.
You used the term expontential in your first question. This specifically refers to scaling animation that makes the speed of the motion appear to be continuous. This is a feature in After Effects, but is not available in any Final Cut Studio product.
    All the best,
    Tom

  • I am making a video out of still images.

I am making a video out of still images.  I would like to start zoomed in on a certain image and have the video show the image as it zooms out.  I would like the speed of the zoom to be the same from start to finish.  How can i achieve this?

  • Animation sent as a group of still images, import as a movie file?

    Hi
I have been sent an animation to use in a edit, but it has been delivered as a large group of still images, instead of a QT file. I was wondering if there was a way that the images can be imported so that they become a movie file that can be treated as such on the timeline, or if I have to spend the time assembling them back together on a sequence and then use that as a segmented file on another sequence?
I guess I am just trying to save time and the hassle of doing a lot of boring work. Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi...
If you have QT pro you can import the image sequence and then export as mov.

  • I'm getting a still image in the beginning of my movie when I export. Why??

I don't understand why FCP is doing this. I export a bunch of movies (using batch export) and some of them export right while others get messed up. There would be a still image in the beginning or sometimes the end instead of seeing the actual movie. I can still hear the sound so it's only a problem with the video.
Because I use QT compression to export I don't have the option to re-compress all frames like in the "export using QT movie" command... right?
Help me out here. It's driving me crazy having to export everything a few times until final cut gets it right... Thanks.

    NLEdit,
Here's what I have (to the best of my knowledge):
Original source: mini DV tape, it's all HD
I use capture now to digitize the whole tape. My easy setup is: HDV- 1080i60 FiriWire Basic. After I have digitized all of it - it's an .mov file with the settings I just posted above. So when final cut is done digitizing I already have all the files in my browser window and I just drag them and drop them in the timeline and I choose to match the timeline settings if they're different. So my timeline settings look like this:
    Frame Size: 1440x1080
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Compressor: HDV 1080i60
When I'm done editing, I use batch export to export a bunch of sequences (they all have the same settings I just mentioned above) and I chose:
Format: QuickTime (custom), Compression Type H.264, frame rate: 29.97 fps, key frames: every 24frames, compressor quality- high, encoding: best quality. Then for size I choose either 1280x720 HD or I use "custom" to make them half the size of that so that would be 640x360. My point is to end up with an .mov file which I can then encode into an flv or just burn it on a data cd.
As for your question number 1: I'm not even sure what you mean by that.
Does all that make any sense now?

  • Still images show as blurred unless movie is paused

I have imported some still images into FCPX, and when viewed in the event browser or in the movie in the timeline they look fine while the movie is paused. But as soon as I start playback, they go a bit blurred. I have tried .psd and .png.
    Can anyone help please?

    Thanks.
The project is 1920 x 1080 29.97 All files are Optimized.
I have tried .psd. 24 bit png and maximum quality jpg. I've even tried using a movie of the still image using Screensnapzpro. The same thing. Looks great until the timeling starts to move.
I'm using photoshop, can I use that to prepare them for video output? I've even tried rendering the image from photoshop to video, but Final Cut won't import that.
I have uploaded a screenshot of what's happening:

You can see what happens when the timeline starts at about 3 seconds, then stops again:

  • Putting a still image on top of a movie clip

Alright, let me explain my scenario. I have a scene in my movie where I want to put someone else's head on top of another persons body (it's not *****). Basically, I want to know if you can put a still image on top of a moving picture. I know this is borderline flash animation, but I want to know if it can be done in Final Cut Express 4.
    Thanks!
    - Jd

    Yes, it is possible.
If the person's body is moving, it is not easy to make his new head on top move smoothly. So a satisfactory result may be hard to reach, but it all depends on what you are expecting to get.
In any case you have to add the new still with the head in the timeline on top of the video, and apply the Basic Motion keyframes to its Scale, Center and/or Rotation controls. Add as many keyframes as you can manage (possibly even one every 5-10 frames) to make the still (head) follow the underlying body smoothly. Note that at 3 keyframes per second (a keyframe every 10 frames with NTSC) you need 30 keyframes in 10 seconds of movie... if you accept a jerkier result you can lower the keyframe number, but it really all depends on the body movement in the movie, and the precision you need.
You might need also to prepare the still by removing all its background, in order to have only a head in it, before importing the still to FCE. For this you could first use Photoshop (Elements) to remove the background, save as .tif with transparency, and finally import to FCE.
    See if it works...

  • Adding a photo/still image to start of movie freezes on that image and doesn't transition to rest of movie

I have basically completed my movie with images, audio clips and background audio.  I want to add one more still image to the start of the movie but when I do that and try to play my movie, it freezes on that one image I just added (yet continues to play the audio for the rest of the movie).  I took my problem to the Apple store today and they had no clue how to fix (said it must be a bug) and just suggested I export the movie then import it again into a new movie.  But when I do that I lose the quality of the images considerably.  I am 99% done with the movie and just need this title image inserted in.
Any ideas why this might be happening or how to resolve without re-building the entire movie again?

    Some things to try.
    1) shut down iMovie and turn off your Mac. Then restart your Mac and start iMovie. This will give iMovie the maximum amount of memory available.
    2) Have you tried sharing the movie? Does the problem exist in the shared version?
    3) What kind of image and what are the dimensions? e.g. JPEG 4000x6000
