Managing movie files on a MBP
Until the last month or so, I've used a powermac G5 as my computer. Now that I've added a shiny new MBP with a 750 gb drive, I'm having all the normal growing pains that come with such. Amazed with the speed boost, having to learn to deal with big time limitations on storage.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out managing movie files. Up until now, I upload most if not all my movie files from my iPhone or Canon 7d into iPhoto. Then later, open iMovie and it "sees" them and does what it does and so forth. Basically, I was using iPhoto and iMovie to handle movie files.
Now that I'm using a MBP, I don't know that I'm going to continue using the powermac G5. Not much, anyways. The speed is way to amazing with the MBP. Not only that, I'm using Aperture 3 for managing pics and it happens to upload videos. I posted in the Ap3 community a similar question regarding managing movies with my current setup.
Should I turn off the import movies option for Ap3 and only use iMovie to continue to manage movie files?
considering movie files, which are primarily HD ones for me now, I have iPhoto, iMovie, and now Ap3 that I can import movies to. If i were using a big desktop macPro with tons of HD space, I really wouldn't think much about hard drive space.
However, now that I'm entering the world of laptop computing for the first time, managing disk space (as you all know) is a specialty all its own, I'm learning quickly. As far as Aperture is concerned, I referenced all my masters off the HD inside the MBP onto an external drive so I can free up some space. I freed up almost 400 gbs!
Now I'm looking at how to manage movie files on a MBP.
Real world example: went to a concert last night, filmed over 2 hours of movie files of the concert. Before I import them off my iPhone, I'm wondering where in the world to import them to. iPhoto? iMovie? Ap3?
What do you all suggest I do with a MBP and managing movie files? Should I continue with importing to iPhoto and letting iMovie then "see" them and do it's thing? Or should I get another external FW800 drive and start using it just for movie files?
What would you long term users of laptops suggest as the best long term approach to managing movie files (which program, internal Vs external, etc) on a macbookpro?

It won't take too much time for your hard drive to fill up with movies you've processed through Aperture or iMovie. Many users opt to dedicate an external hard drive for their movie projects, and I can recommend the G-Drive and Seagate Go Drive for speed and reliability. I don't own OWC drives, but they're rated well, too. A one-TB drive will keep you going for a long time.
Process your movies as little as possible. Depending on he content, you can lose a little every time you transfer the data. Use a single format to manage your documents, since this will minimize conversion. Your process flow seems to rely on iMovie to manage movies.

Is it common practice to transfer short film clips like .mpeg and .mov files to iphoto and store them there? I have heard that some people transfer these types of files into itunes.

You'll have to set up iPhoto not to automatically open and import when the camera is connected. Instead set up Image Capture to be the application to open where you can manually upload the movies to a folder on the desktop and the photos to iPhoto. It will be a manual operation.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
Why is there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my files now. I read short comments & how to's in the support sections, but nothing I've read so far explains"best practices" or turning iCloud off to get a grip on managing files. I have 250gb fast storage on the MBP itself, and 200gb in the ICloud, one would thing that's enough. The files seem too be multiplying like rabbits. IPhoto's Faces has created hundereds of "somethings" not sure what. I am sure I am very frustrated! Please comment with kindness.

Nope, you don't understand it.
If you download a song from the iTunes cloud storage (which is not iCloud) it goes into the iTunes music folder (generally to a subfolder therein)
If you download a document from the iCloud drive it will go wherever you chose to put it.
If you download a photo from the iCloud Photo library it will also go wherever you choose to put it.*
If you move something you have not copied it, if you want to keep a copy on the iCloud drive and in a local folder, you would copy, not move it.
There is no 'automatic' movement, you decide what to store on the iCloud drive (exactly like any other drive) and what to remove.
The iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder, you use it just like any other, copy/paste, save, delete etc.
You can turn the iCloud drive off whenever you like, download the content to a local drive first.
* Because the iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder there is in fact no need to ever download anything to your Mac, everything on the drive is already on your Mac. -

I prefer to do graphic work on my 21-inch iMac (2012 version). But when I travel I need to copy files to my 2014 MBP. I learned that my 2012 iMac is too old for use of AirDrop, so I’m copying and moving files with a flash drive. That seems slow and clumsy. I am trying to decrease the size of my aperature library on my MB Pro HD. I used file\ relocate master to move files to my External HD(EHD) and this worked. However, the size of my MBP library has not decreased. I do not want to delete the files on my MB Pro until I am confident Aperature can see the files on the EHD. It looks like the relocate master fxn just copies the masters and data to another location.
Relocate master (or original in newer versions) does move and not copy the master file. Jut to make sure I just ram a test and moved some images out of the library to an external drive and they were definitely gone from the Aperture library.
If you look at the images in the library that you moved do they have the referenced file badge? If you run a filter on your library looking for referenced files do the images you relocated show up? If you select one of the images and do a Show in Finder what does it show? Finally if you select the images and do Locate Referenced files do they appear listed as being on the volume you put them on?
You could go into the library and look for the masters you moved to see if they are still there but if all the above show you they were relocated then I don;t think you will find them.
How are you checking the library size? Have you quit Aperture and restarted it (better would be to log out and log back in) and then checked the size? It is possible that some of that data is cached and won't get updated till you restart.
Finally you could do a library repair in case something got 'stuck'. -
Importing and Managing Digital Movie Files in Aperture
It's been a while since this topic was addressed (Dec 2006 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3639422&tstart=0#3644525) and now days most prosumer SLR can record short videos. Furthermore, although Aperture is indeed a pro App designed for still images, it would be very nice if it could handle anything coming out of our digital cameras (movies included). Apple has a long tradition of making digital life simpler, and having to handle movies and pictures coming from the exact same source is not simpler.
As my photo is maturing and becoming more serious (and semipro) I'm graduating from iPhoto into Aperture (bliss) but I'm being left in limbo when importing my iPhoto Library where I had a few hundred quicktime movies acquired over the last 5 years.
After a painful import process I'm shocked to realize that Aperture 2.x does not handle movie files like iPhoto does. All I'm asking for here is for Aperture store a link to a referenced movie file and a small thumbnail, like iPhoto has done for years, which can then be opened by any movie editing software such as Quicktime Pro, etc.
Anyway, Aperture team, with the advent of Liveview on Canon and other SLR recording movies, some of us would very much appreciate the ability to manage small videos within Aperture.
Will the Aperture team support this new feature? When?

Regarding Artwork and managing of iTunes Movie files on a NAS Drive
My Macbook hard drive was virtually full so like many other people in my situation I made space by moving my Movies and TV folders from iTunes media to a NAS networked hard drive connected to my network router at home. That's great, freed up loads of space and when I'm home my iTunes wirelessly finds it and can even stream the content via my Apple TV. My question now though is how do I add artwork to movie files that I have ripped from my DVD's? I've been going into the info pane and adding artwork as I normally do and clicking ok, but then nothing changes. It's as if iTunes cannot write the artwork image to the file on the NAS drive, or connect the thumbnail to it.
This has led me to question how do I now add a new movie file to my iTunes if the folder is located on a NAS drive now. I also normally add a movie file to my iTunes library and then amend it's metadata i.e. the video type (movie/TV Shows), add artwork etc. My concern is that I'm not sure how to add more files and also once I do I cannot seem to amend the metadata.
Does anyone have experience in this and can they explain how best to do it.I have a similar setup with an iMac and media library on a TC and can add some converted movies but not all and changes to metadata don't save. Files aren't hidden somewhere in Home movies. I thought it was a format issue so switched to m4v Apple format and found that i can add some to the library but not others. Any that do add, don't take changes to the metadata - no error message, just doesn't process. Interestingly, I recently upgrades from a Windows pc to the Mac and under Windows it worked perfectly!

How do I transfer a movie file from my iPad to my MacBook Pro?
I recently accidentally deleted all media files that existed in the iTunes Media folder on my MacBook Pro. I have managed to recover almost every file, the only one I have yet to recover is a movie that was redeemed through iTunes after I purchased it as part of a DVD/Blue-Ray/Digital Copy combo pack. It is no where to be found on my hardrive yet the 'phantom' file still extsts within my iTunes library. After checking all of our family's Apple devices (2 iPhones, 5 iPads, 1 older MacBook, & 1 MacBook Pro) I was delighted to discover the movie still exists on my stepson's iPad Mini! Only now I cannot seem to find a way to 'transfer' this movie file back onto my MacBook Pro. I am refusing to sync or update his iPad Mini in fear that I might loose the only copy of the movie I have left! Can someone please help me transfer this file back to my MacBook Pro? Thanks so much!

You must be using the same Apple ID in iTunes on your Mac that your son is using on the Mini or the movie will not transfer. -
How to delete a MOV file off of my iPad
I just bought a Nikon S8100 camera, it can shoot video as well. I shot a couple of test videos, and left it in 1080p mode. I used my camera kit to connect it directly to my iPad, and uploaded the pictures I had taken, and the two videos. They all load into the Photos app on the iPad, but the videos won't play. I figured out that the format was not supported on the iPad. When I lower the resolution to 720p or lower, it will play on the iPad, and can be managed there. My problem is that I can't figure out how to DELETE the 2 .mov files I initially loaded. When I am in the Photos app, the thumbnail just say "MOV". Unlike every other item, this one I cannot select, so I can't delete. I've tried syncing through iTunes and accessing my iPad files that way, but there does not seem to be an option there to delete.
I had the same problem with my Kodak FX3 (Playsport) camcorder. I uploaded some .MOV files to my iPad but it won't play them and I can't seem to delete them.
These files don't show up in the Video app so we can't use that to delete them.
Any suggestions? Anyone?

Ideas of how to manage voice files on iPod
This might be a wierd one ... I bought an iPod on Satuday, really happy with it! But aside from having all my music there was was 1 other main purpose.
I'm a medical student and record all my lecture notes so I can listen back to them to help me learn it all. I travel a lot and it would be a great way to multi task and listen to lecture notes on the move. However there are loads of lectures and loads of notes so I'd really have to categorise them otherwise it will all get very confusing.
I asked 3 separate assistants in the iPod shop about folders and subfolders, they all said that I can create folders and subfolders and subfolders in subfolders in itunes and transfer them across to my iPod ...... great! Exactly what I wanted. Got home, and haven't worked out how to do it - searched online and still no luck and read in a few places that I cant even do it!
Here's what I want to be able to do, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
Will have folders like the following:
Neuro -> Eye -> about 10-20 voice recordings
Neuro -> Anatomy -> Neck -> about 5-10 voice recordings
Neuro -> Anatomy -> Face -> about 5-10 voice recordings
Muscles -> Anatomy -> chap 1
Muscles -> Anatomy -> chap 2
Muslces -> antomy -> chap3 .... etc
Mucles -> physiology ....
etc
anyway, you get the idea. Probably need about 3 levels of folders.
Also, I also asked one guy if I was able to add folders to the very first menu screen you get (the one with music,photos,videos etc) ideally I would want to have folders for my modules (neuro, muslces etc) there and then the subfolders leading off from it...
Big question: is this possible? and if so, how?
If not - anyone got any ideas on how I can manage the files without having a huge long list? Or using the iPod efficiently for what I want to do.
Also - I do want to have my music files on it as well (although for me its a secondary function) - it would be nice to keep the music and the audio files separate ..
Any help would be great. Thanksanyone have any ideas about this?

I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore
I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore from an HDV camera that play on other macs and play in vlc. It happened all of a sudden. Files that I could play before no longer play. It seems to be something wrong with the quicktime codec management because the files do not play in premiere and final cut pro. In FCP it says: File Error: 1 File(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. These files work on other computers. I have four drives and it doesnt matter which file i attempt to open on each drive, these files are unreadable on this system. Please help. Possible issues might be a corrupted index, but i dont understand how that can go across four different drives.

Solutions: What I did. Wipe the system disc. Re-install Snow Leopard. Re-install FCP7. Don't update Quicktime or iTunes to anything after Jun 2011. QT v7.6.6 is the last good version. That'll get your files back.
A colleague tried a different approach. For this you need a pre-July 2011 version of the file QuickTimeComponents.component. It is in the system/library/QuickTime folder. Delete your current one and drop in an old one.
However if you're working with Final Cut X, I think you screwed until Focus and Apple work something out. My address is on my contacts page at teevideousadotcom if you need any further help. -
How do I setup iTunes on a Windows computer to use movie files on a TC?
I have succeeded in mapping my TC’s hard drive to my desktop Windows (XP Professional) computer. I have also changed the iTunes Music folder location on that computer to the folder on the TC’s hard drive that contains my MP4 movie files.
My problem is that I don’t know how to make my movie files show up in iTunes. I assume, but don’t know that, because my iTunes Music folder is now designated as being on the TC, whatever I do will not use a lot of hard drive space on the XP desktop. Nevertheless, I need to know before I try it because my movie files are exponentially larger than the available disk space on the XP. In short, what do I do to get the movie files that reside on the TC to show up in iTunes without taking up a bunch of the XP’s disk space? Any help will be appreciated.Smokerz – Thanks for the feedback. I managed to get iTunes to find the movie files on my TC by simply dragging the icons of the files on the TC into the Movies folder in iTunes. This immediately made them available for streaming on my Apple TV. Also, I learned with great relief that, despite their large size, dragging icons of my movie files into iTunes did not copy them to the C: drive on my desktop computer. Thus, it looks as if the job is pretty much done. Thanks again for your advice.

Windows 8.1 with .mov files crashing
I have spent 12 hours with the so called professionals at Microsoft trying to get my daughters laptop to open .mov files.
This is as I write an unresolved issue that a tier 2 technician is supposed to be responding to today 05/01/15.
Although unresolved it made me wonder if this problem is unique to windows 8.1.
The answer would seem to be NO.
I booted up my old desktop PC running windows 7 32 bit with media player 11.
Guess what. The files don't crash the explorer window or indeed media player, although they will not open either.
As these files have been on my desktop for maybe two years I have to ask is this due to some update posted by either Microsoft or Apple as part of a compatibility enhancement?
I cannot be certain, but I feel sure they used to open with no problem at all.
Apple or Microsoft?
I will keep you posted as to the outcome of my discussion with Microsoft.
In the meantime has anyone else had a similar issue and managed to resolve it?I have tried lots of fixes including renaming files. The only thing that works for me is to remove the following windows updates:

Turn off auto updates before you start as you need to reboot afterwards.
I set auto update to the download but let me choose option otherwise these 2 re install themselves.

Error during importation of .mov files
I click import > files and choose a .mov file. Usually it instantly imports it and that's it. But then I tried to import these HD videos converted to HD .mov and the FC opens a box saying it's validating the files. What the **** is that? It then quits unexpectedly and displays this huge log:

4 libsystem_c.dylibThis HD video I have is .mkv. I converted it to .mov using a video converter software I bought (Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate) wich is very good. There were these two options among a variety of other types of file I could choose to convert. These two were .mov (meaning that both options convert the .mkv to .mov), they only differ in the codec the software used to convert I guess (I'm not sure, all I know is that the codec bar was diferent). The names of the options read: "HD Mov File" and "Common Mov File". I used the two options and got two .mov files out of the original .mkv file. Then I tried to import these two .mov files to work in FC (I tried one first, caused the error, then I tried the other wich caused the same error).
The QT player movie inspector info of the .mov file (option: Common Mov File) is the folowing:
