Managing RAM

My MAC has suddenly slowed right down and received a Not Enough RAM message.
Can I please have tips to improve?

• Acrobat craches - how to manage RAM usage?

I implemented a script for switching on and off a lot of lists of my pdf layers to the same time. The Acrobat crashes when I use it with big PDFs, around 60 layers. At first I though it would be an error, therefore I checked all the functions and added exception handling on every function. The program still crashes without throwing any exception( to be sure, I putted app.alert(...) in catch-block). Then I realized that the acrobat crashes if it involves up to 500 mb RAM, on other computer 450 mb. Can it occur at all, that it crashes cause of lack of memory? If yes, is it possible to manage it somehow? (increase more RAM for the program or delete some variables, which are not using more at runtime or there is some garbage collector)? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Do you mean, something like this: var ocgsArray = this.getOCGs(); ?
Could I change/get the properties of each layer on such a way as well?
i.e.:
1. ocgsArray[1].state = false;
or get the name :
2. var layerName1 =  ocgsArray[1].name;

• I have a 27" iMac with 16GB of factory installed SDRAM and 1T harddrive.  It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.  How can I adjust so that all files are managed on the harddrive rather than the SDRAM.  (BTW - design flaw)

Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I have a 27" iMac with 16GB of factory installed SDRAM and 1T harddrive.  It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.  How can I adjust so that all files are managed on the harddrive rather than the SDRAM.  (BTW - design flaw here.)
Older Macs with a single Harddrive would simply expand OS management on the drive, and I think I understand the new Fusion Drive to do just that, but how do I get this product that I spent a great deal of money on to be more than a pretty screen?

I was confused by this statement
It is telling me the harddrive is full and is not functioning correctly.
OS X manages ram and when you run out, it create swapfiles to extend your ram on the HDD (Hard Disk Drive). The OS itself, takes about 16 gig of space and that too resides on the HDD.  Your 16 gig of RAM is really a temporary space that holds things from the HDD so the processor can work on them.  There is no design flaw between your ram and HDD.  Something else is going on and there are a lot of smart people here to help you figure out what that "something else" is.
I would do three things.  First I would create a backup, backups are important.  Second, I would reboot into recovery and repair my HDD.  Lastly while still booted in recovery I would repair permissions.
Can you capture a screen shot of the exact error you are getting?

• Node manager

i have two managed servers MS_Dev1 and MS_Dev2 in MS windows 7 system. when starting the admin MS_Dev2 reaches to running mode as i configured node-manager for both server. But MS_Dev1 went to shutdown state, not able to start from Admin console. It went to Failed " FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE ". checked the log it says invalid password.
i have re typed the pwd in Settings for MS_Dev1 -> Server Start -> username and password, again the same " FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE ". finally i went to C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\dev_domain\servers\MS_Dev1\security and re typed the username and password in boot.properties file. Restarted the admin server but same " FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE " for MS_Dev1. Also i have tried to shutdown the MS_Dev1 in admin console, it throws below
Message icon - Warning The server MS_Dev1 is in an incompatible state.
Message icon - Warning All of the servers selected are currently in a state which is incompatible with this operation or are not associated with a running Node Manager or you are not authorized to perform the action requested. No action will be performed.
Note: Pwd for Admin, MS_Dev1 and 2 are same
Looking the solution to fix this issue ASAP, Thnks a lot in Advance !

• Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Core i5 8GB RAM - Constant RAM usage?

Hi,
I just upgraded my Macbook Pro's RAM to a DDR3 8GB 1067MHz setup that came highly recommended after much research on the topic. My question is, how come in my Activity Monitor I have so much RAM being used at any given time? It doesn't seem to matter if I have ZERO applications or 15 applications open, it's constantly using more than 2GB.
I understand that inactive is just as good as free, but still even including inactive, it's still sucking more than 2GB with nothing open.
On top of that, I run NO virtual machines, yet I have roughly 1GB wired ALL THE TIME.
Now I've read mixed reviews about how OSX Snow Leopard manages RAM, and I have to say, I am concerned with these numbers. Also, I have no page outs, so I don't think I have a RAM stick issue.
Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on here? also if there is a program out there that can manage this better than SL is currently doing (which is a crappy job it seems).
Thanks in advance.

Francis, let me try to answer your questions.
The 1GB wired is your OSX, and can only be changed if you work at removing some parts that you don't need. I've read where some people have gotten the wired OSX memory down to 600MB, but it doesn't seem to be very productive.
As for having 2GB running, if you remove the 1GB for OSX, then you'll have dozens of tasks still running to do everything from running the monitor to sound to everything else. Moreover, they get into RAM, because there is plenty of room. BUT, if you open applications, some of these processes may grow or shrink depending on needs.
Here is an older article about Mac memory use. It's a bit dated, but pretty accurate.
I personally think you're fine. You have over 6GB available for everything you might do. I run Aperture in 64bit, and 4GB for me is more than fine.

• Security update 2014-002 ram problem

Hello,
I have iMac late 2007 with 4 GbyteRam, after update 2014-002 the ram is coming down to 300 Mbyte. The iMac after login is inusable.
Anyone has this problem?
Thanks

Why do you think you need that?
Mac OS is very good at managing RAM, especially Mavericks. I would not install such an application, so i have no knowledge on how it works.
I googled it and found this review:
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/free-up-mac-memory-with-memory-clean/
which says (in part):
"When Memory Clean cleans your memory, your already slow system will proceed to get even slower. Better to quit any demanding apps to bring your system back up to something resembling full speed before running Memory Clean to optimize performance further"
Sorry, but I don't understand this:
Anyone apps is open.
Does that mean 1 app is open or many apps are open?
And, 4 GB RAM is considered a minimum for Mavericks - more is much better.

• MacbookPro is running too much ram idle (16GB installed)

Hello, my computer seems to be using an excessive amount of ram while sitting idle (3.35GB currently). I did a complete OS re-install as directed by apple but the problem doesn't seem to be fixed. I haven't used a time machine backup so my computer is currently at a factory default stage. When i had everyhing on it before i would max out my ram (15.55GB +/-) only running safari..
Any help would be appreciated.

When you are checking within Activity Monitor are you viewing "All Processes"? Please note that the OS is very good at managing RAM, and unless there is some symptom you are seeing, there is no reason to be concerned.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

• Why this OS comsumes too much ram?

I don't use any solfware then Ram is loss 2.85gb/4gb
The compay is fixing soon...

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It's not a bug. OS X Mavericks has got a different way of managing RAM usage, so you shouldn't have any performance problem even with few free memory. See Compressed Memory > http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/

• Is Safari 4 having a RAM issue?

Hi to all,
this topic is to ask wether my Safari 4 RAM consumption is within the norms.
Having just about 15 open tabs with not much Flash content (except some ads), RAM consumption hovers between 330MB and 570MB.
I do run other applications at the same time, namely Skype, iChat, NeoOffice and Anxiety.
In my opinion, HUGE, and as a result, the swap file is large (2,7GB) is constantly sollicited, slowing down the computer's responsiveness.
Is such a consumption within the norms?

Hi
I purged the cache, yet RAM usage from Safari increased from 180MB to about 320MB in about 5 minutes of light browsing.
As Klaus posted, these are not unusual numbers, especially for 15 tabs. The more tabs (think of each one as a separate window), the higher the RAM requirement. Quit/restart Safari resets the RAM allocation. Good idea to purge the cache on a regular basis, especially if using high speed internet connection.
OS X Leopard is quite efficient at managing RAM requirements. OS X creates "swap files" to facilitate the use of system resources including RAM and HD available space. A restart of the computer resets the swap files to small file sizes.
In general, 4 GB of RAM ought to be quite sufficient for most users. In your case, unless you are using a number of heavy RAM apps, you ought not to see sluggishness. If you are seeing slowness in Safari (or any other apps), system maintenance is usually the remedy - I use OnyX once a month - basically for running "maintenance scripts", although some times I use it to clear the System or User Caches. For an explanation of the caches have a look here. Also, if you are not familiar with OnyX, I encourage you to read its help section describing its various functions before actually using the program.
Another cause of "slowness" may be directory errors on the HD. Best tool out there for monitoring the health of the HD and repairing errors is Disk Warrior. Apple's Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder} is a very basic approach to fixing HD errors, yet it may be an indicator of pending problems. DU's "verify disk" function via the First Aid panel would be an initial step. Note: even if no errors are detected, this is not necessarily an indication of HD health.

• Upgrade mac mini 2010 w 6GB RAM

presently mid 2010 mac mini upgraded to maverick. seems running low on memory.
planning to upgrade from the default 4GB (2x2GB) that comes with mini server version
do i have to upgrade both slots equally say 2x4GB (8GB), or can i upgrade 1x2GB and 1x4GB (6GB)
thnks

You can use different RAM sizes if you want, but I recommend you to use two modules of the same amount of RAM to take advantage of Dual Channel. You can buy more RAM at OWC or Crucial.
Note that OS X Mavericks manages RAM in a different way than older OS X versions, so in some cases it is "normal" that RAM usage is high

• My MacBook Pro SAD experience: MUST READ if you are about to get 1.

Things to clarify at the beginning:
1. im not an english native speaker so try not be too picky for my language.
2. im not a mac hater and i've own a powerbook 17 1.5g as well as a iMac G5
Here we go:
1. I've spent £2000+ to get my top spec MacBook Pro (2.16/2G/7200rpm) so i'm kinda expecting for a super computer, am i wrong?
2. My first unit failed me on the 4th day of purchase, after I spend 2 entire days to load all the software up, immigrate all my emails and academic papers from my SONY FE11s, it failed. The system won't start up and i can't even see the Apple logo after press the power button. I bring it to Regent Street Apple Store, and the genius told me that it is because my DVD is stucked inside and the MacBook pro iS KEEP READING it instead of the Hard drive.
Then we tried holding C, Mouse Button, F12, Eject, reset PRAM, PMU and the disc just woudn't came out (a standard dvd). Then they said they'll crack the machine open to get the disc out and they'll give me a brand new replacement right away. ( You can see how stupid is MacBook Pro's firmware designed, even it IS the disc's faul, it should be able to skip reading it after say 30 seconds or so and go straight on to the harddisc right? )
The genius said that they will give me a call once they managed to get the thing booted and transfer the original data to my new MBP. The next day i get a call, saying that all the HARDDISC DATA was "destoried" and "Unrecoverable"... and I've default my FE11S sony and put it on eBay. so i don't manage to keep a copy of my files.
3. Heat issue.
No matter what people tell you, don't believe it. go to any apple store in the afternoon or evening while their display machines have been running for several hours. touch the bottom of the screen and the body. It burns your finger. Now i'm using my macbook pro on iCurve (which hangs the mbp in the middle of the air and make a perfect cooling condition) and the room temp is around 15c. The machine is still EXTERMELY HOT even i just use it to browse web for 30 minutes. I did not dare to touch the bottom of the screen (where the MacBook Pro words are displayed), and it will be a GREAT PAIN if you insist to touch that thing for over 2 seconds and want to DEMONOSTRATE it is safe.
4. Stability
Yes i know we Mac users always teasing around with Windows Bluescreens, but the macbook pro i've got in hand hangs every one or two days AND without famous "four langauge error message". It just hangs there like a overclocked PC! i'll have to hold the powerbutton and get it shut.
5. Memory consumption
Rosetta is one of the biggest fat lie that apple have made. without 2 gig ram don't dream to use over 2 ppc programmes at the same time.. just let me show you something ( yes i was watching a live tv show in safari hence the cpu and memory consumption, but that is still far more than i will expect ) 22mb LEFT with ONE PPC programme on ... I only notice this because i was trying to mount a disc image and failed with error msg "too many applications running"? is it too many for a £2000+ coreduo and 2g ram laptop? take a look at the screen shot and judge it yourself.
With the great pile of "INACTIVE MEMORY", i really start to doubt the ability that mac os x tiger handels the memories. After the screen shot i've shut down all the running applications, then i switched the activity monitor back on, guess what, i only get less than 200 mb free memory, the rest are still inactive or locked up....
CONCLUSION:
Yes the macbook pro is superbly fast, espcially after i got my aperture 1.1 upgrade on it and compare with my powerbook running version 1.0. yes it opens itunes in 2 seconds and make me feel like i was merely maximize the window from hiding. BUT HEY... this computer cost me over £2000 (that's about $30000?) and it's a laptop that you can't leave it on your lap, a macintosh that is not as stable as a windows server 2003 (that's wat i got on my only pc , im a geek and i own a pile of different computers). i didn't want to mention the whine and other famous bugs because that's not an issue to a geek whos room is filled with eletronic noises and i use wired connection for maximum speed so my airport wont drop.
but i'd rather send my powerbook 17 to daystar and get a 2.0 G powerg4 upgrade if i have a second chance.
over.

You misunderstand the memory management scheme and misinterpret the display you're seeing.
To start with, free memory is wasted memory. Once some disk contents have been brought in, it is wasteful to discard that data just to make the RAM that it occupied "free." Inactive memory is memory that is not currently used, can be given to an application that needs it without doing any disk I/O (or used as a destination for reading disk content) but which currently holds disk data that might be useful in the future. I.e., it's file content of some sort.
To get a better idea of how Mac OS X manages RAM and how to interpret the Activity Monitory dispaly, see this tech note: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.
Rosetta is indeed memory hungry, but it's an interim solution. With 2 GB of RAM installed, you can run a lot of applications with alacrity.
Lastly, your Safari, an Intel-native application, is currently using 2 GB. This is a known issue with Safari, though it seems to me that it has gotten better since 2.0.3 was released in 10.4.6. Still, it's a bit of a memory hog, to be sure. Now that Firefox, Camino and Seamonkey are all available in Universal (Intel native) forms, you have alternatives. Firefox seems a lot more parsimonious when it comes to RAM.

• Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks

Hello!
May be it is a stupid question, but I would be happy to get some answers...
I have MacBook Pro early 2011, 2.2 Ghz, 4 Gb RAM. Pretty powerful machine. Currently I have Snow Leopard. It was his first OS. In beginning of November I updated my Mac to Mavericks, I thought that if my Mac has very good hardware it will run new system very good. Instead of the nice performance, I got many problems! Mac was lagging, the usage of the RAM was 3,99 of 4 Gb with one app opened (common problem for many people, since they've upgraded to the Mavericks). After all those troubles I decided to go back to Snow Leopard, I have my original SL CDs and formatted my whole HDD ( deleted Bootcamp partition as well) and did a clean install of SL, and it began to work perfectly, as it was before Mavericks!
So, now I have important question, I would like to upgrade my current SL to something newer, I have a hope that new Mavericks update 10.9.1 will be better than previous one that I had (10.9). If not, than I would like to upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion, whoch one would you advice?
I want to upgrade it because there is majority of apps that are developed to work on 10.7 and they do not support my current 10.6.8.
May be somebody from you knows what update will be better to do, to not lose current performance of my MBP. I am already afraid to do any upgrade because I had bad experience with Mavericks...
I have to add that my MacBook Pro is clean in physical and non-physical sence. I did the AHT, I also opened back cover, cleaned it from the dust. Everything is perfect. And I am pretty sure, that after any upgrade to above mentioned OSs, my MBP should not lose performance and speed!!!
Looking forward for your ideas! Thank you in advance
Best regards,
Eugen

4Gb too litle? Not True at all.  Of course more is better, and i do swuggest 8GB, but only because it's often cheap and easy.
First, i dont have my long write up, but using 3.9 GB/4Gb with ne app is normal.  10.9 manages RAM very, very differently. You hsould rally  only look at "compression level" and "swaps" - both should be low.
on a 2011 with 4GB 10.9 runs great.  And in fact it runs similarly to 10.6. IMNSHO, the two best modern OSes are 10.6.8 and 10.9.1. If your 10.9 didnt run well, something was interfering or somethign was corrupted.
I'm running it on 2009 MBP hardware, with 4G.
I think the OP needs to identify the source of slowness, adn ignore the % of RAM used.  Ping me and i can send you my writeup on Memory Management.

• Faulty hard drive? Memory analysis

Hey
Been trying to figure out whether or not my new MBP's hard drive is faulty.
It's a 13" 2,56GHz (Core2Duo) with 4 GB RAM
Can you help me find out by "analyzing" these numbers?
I did this clean install and got these numbers - after the clean install, no extra software installed and no external HDD plugged in:
Uptime: 3 days
Load averages: 0,38 0,49 0,62
Page ins: 2,26 GB
Page outs: 384 KB
Swap-disc used: 3,0 MB
0,6 GB free + 1,4 GB passive memory / 4 GB total = 50 %,
when running 13 diff. apps, incl. Safari with 10 tabs open (a slight bit of Flash)
Hard drive sleeping turned off.
Numbers after doing doing a full restore from Time Machine:
Did a test, running 30 apps (pretty heavy ones too, like all iWork apps, FF, Chrome, Safari etc.).
Free memory was gone, but had 1 GB passive left at all times. Got a lot of page outs though.
See screenshot.
http://img30.imageshack.us/i/screenshotot.png/
Not sure why my memory usage stays this, somewhat, high now when only having very few apps open.
Also, what about the SWAP disc number, is that bad?
After another 24 hours, just normal usage (no heavy multitasking at all):
See second screenshot
http://img402.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2ux.png/
System does seem a little slow and i'm getting some beachballs
Hope you can help me out
Thanks in advance

What you've posted gives no indication of any problem with your hard drive. Indeed, it has hardly anything to do with your hard drive. OS X is busy managing RAM to allow all your applications to keep running at once, and that's about all that appears to be happening.
You may want to read this Apple article about the several different RAM usage states and OS X's RAM management strategies:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342
It may reassure you about the normality of what you're seeing.

• Restore iPhone failed but space still allocated in iPhone

Hi,
I was restoring an iPhone 4 from a backup on iTunes after upgrading from 4.3.3 to 7.1.2.
The restore appeared to have finished OK - I didn't actually see it finish but there was no message to indicated that it didn't
The phone started to reboot and went into set up mode - asking me to set language etc ... which led on to asking me to restore from backup or set up as a new phone. Wasn't expecting to be faced with the option to restore again!
Problem is now when I kick off restore from iTunes backup it tells me there isn't enough space on the phone. It's like it placed the backup file (which I found on my laptop and its > 9GB) onto the phone while it was restoring and has not removed it.
Any suggestions ??
Thanks,
Mary

I have spent months dealing with a similar problem and FINALLY found out the relatively simple culprit and solution after talking with very helpful apple support people by phone (free live phone support is apparently available after upgrading to Mavericks).
The problem wasn't with iphoto.  The problem was not having enough RAM to allow iphoto to do its thing.  When plugging in my phone  to import photos, it pushed my RAM capacity past its limit, which caused  the endless spinning wheel and the computer freezing.  In particular, scrolling through iphone thumbnails seemed to trigger the crashing.
To determine if this applies to you, you can open the Activity Monitor utility and click Memory tab at the top and then look at Memory Used -- if the amount of Memory Used is anywhere close to Physical Memory (available), then RAM could be the problem.
My IMac is only a few years old and came with 4GB RAM standard, but that apparently isn't enough nowadays unless you close everything else.  Skype and Itunes were opening automatically and running in the background, eating up lots of memory.  Obviously you can try and manage RAM by stopping those from opening automatically, etc., but regardless, I'm going to purchase more RAM.

Since I'm completely new to Express and nobody in my company

I made a 10 min video and tried to "finalize" it. It said it couldn't publish it. Can't remember exactly what it said but it used the word "heap" or something. What does that mean?
