Managing Tasks in large projects

I'd like to create DAQmx tasks inside the folder structure of my project (.lvproj).
If I right-click on folder 'beamPath' and create a New DAQmx task, it results in the above.
However, when I close the project and re-open, it's gone.
If I right-click on 'My Computer' create task, close project and re-open, it's still there:
Where does the task exist? is it a file I can view when looking at the file structure.
I have a very large project divided into sub-systems that I test individually, I'd like the tasks for each sub-system stored within a folder called "tasks" inside the autopopulating folder structure of the Project.

The task and all other DAQmx stuff is stored in the project (*.lvproj) auto-pop folders don't work because there is no file on disk for the task besides that xml file with the .lvproj extension. Try opening the project with Internet Explorer- you'll see exactly what I mean and learn a lot about how DAQmx tasks live.
Which brings up another "Nice-to-Know" tidbit of information. Auto-populating folders were invented by the devil's mother. Have you ever seen a shipping example that used them? Did you know that project templates can't use them? (today, but I saw a CAR show up to change that) Don't use them. They were helpful to build projects out of llbs and get you going with projects but, they have limitations. The project explorers's files view is a much more powerful tool to use to sync your file structure on disk with your virtual folder structure (If you want that that) Virtual folders hold things just as effectively since you can really only hurt yourself messing with the files on disk without using the project explorer anyway (Thats how you get conflicts.)

Very large project management - need advice?

I am editing a 6 one hour episode series. I am doing this with a single library and about 20 events. Each event holds the footage keywords for the original Prores source files. I have the 6 major episode timelines created and also about 20 more timelines for interviews (I have 80 interviews that are subtitled). My FCP library files is 1.82TB size.
I am running a new Mac Pro and a new 8TB Raid 0 drive (2x4Tb). This started to freeze once or twice a day while editing.
I am now thinking to make this into 6 libraries - one for each episode and with just 3 or 4 timelines needed (sequences) for each episode. Would this help? I read that FCPX cannot handle a large project like mine and long timelines?

Have you seen any info on splitting into smaller libraries - not seen anything on this?
I just recently did this to reverse course on an early organizational decision I'd come to regret. Basically created new libraries and moved events to them from within the app.
But I would definitely consider Luis' suggestion about consolidating and working with external media.

MS Project 2003 Pro - Link task from other Project files

Starting yesterday I wanted to find a way to link a task in one Project File to a task in another Project File. The idea being I have a Site Development Project File, and wanted a certain task in that schedule to drive tasks in individual House Development
Project Files so we wouldn't need to use one large cumbersome Project File for the entire Development. So like other users I've read about I tried copy task and paste special into an existing task cell, a predecessor of other tasks, which of course resulted
in the "OLE Paste operation cannot be completed" error. So as a test I saved two Project files, Project1 and Project2. I then tried to "Paste Special" into a "New Task" row, which was instead empty and found that would work without
the OLE error, except the linked task's Predecessor copied with the linked task so it's predecessor was now that numbered task within Project2 which I didn't want. So looking at Project1 since I set them both up as one parent task with five subtasks for simplicity,
I copied the parent task from Project1 (no predecessor) into a blank Insert / New Task row in Project2, then made the linked task a predecessor to the next task below and voila! Viewing the two Project Files in Window / Arrange All, when the duration of one
of the Subtasks in Project1 is adjusted, it drives the overall duration in Project2 just like I wanted. So while most of you may already know this trick, as I could not find much information on doing this (somewhere they suggested "Insert Project",
which did work but was not what I wanted), I thought I'd still share this in case it helps someone else. You just need to copy a parent task with no predecessor, paste special into a blank New Task row then make that the appropriate predecessor in the pasted
Project File. Cool!

I second the strong caution on the use of paste links in Project as indicated by Guillaume. It is the same as playing with fire and it sounds like you already got burned. Paste links do work but they are NOT for the casual user and their use requires the
upmost in file creation expertise and file management discipline.
Let me highlight a couple of things I think I understood in your description. First, it sounds like you were paste linking the whole task link. Paste links on individual field cells are tenuous enough but doing a whole line will only result in disaster.
Second, it sounds like you were trying to paste link into a summary line. That is equally a really bad idea. With that construct I can virtually guarantee file corruption.
I can understand why Insert Project did not meet your needs. You are trying to link a single task in one file with another. That is achieved with a cross-project link (i.e. external predecessor/successor). Insert Project is exactly what it says, the WHOLE
project is inserted, not just a single task. So Insert Project and cross-project links are NOT the same thing.
Bottom line. What you want is a single cross-project link. Even then you still open the door to potential file corruption. Once you have that link established, never move, rename, or save to a different location. Ideally both files should be in the same
folder on a local drive, not on a shared network.

It totally depends on your organization process.
Normally PMO creates project, build team,assign resources to tasks, then while save and publish the projec assign Project manager as owner for the project plan.
If you have Resource manager in your organization then he can build the team for the project publish it then PMO or project manager can assign the resource to the task then save and publish the plan.
IF project manager has idea about resources then he can also build the team and assign resource to the task.
Note :- once PMO or resource manager build the team and publish the project then Project owner need to open the project plan add new field in the plan STATUS MANAGER and select his name for all task for which he will give the approval to the actual of the
task send by resources.
By default who ever will create project act as STATUS MANAGER for all the task.

Just talking about the tool capabilities, preventing a task approver (status manager) to approve/reject updates once he has already approved once is not possible out-of-the-box. You grant permissions to user: if you grant a user to approve task updates then
he has the permission to approve updates, no matter if it is the 2nd or 3rd time the task is approved or rejected.
Then of course you could do not custom development to do that.
I'd say that in order to help you, we would need to understand a little bit more your business need. Why do you need to achieve such a goal? We can surely propose you workaround.

What is the best way to manage tasks. I have moved from a pc with outlook and have lost 'tasks' in that programme. Do I have to rely on ical or can I download an app to manage business tasks?

iCal does have reminders but its implementation of tasks is pretty wimpy. There are a number of programs that are better geared to the job. I was a level 4 procrastinator until I discovered Getting Things Done and for me Things is perfect. It lets me handle projects which are dependent upon multiple tasks in a no-nonsense easy fashion. Much less expensive and really not much more than a list maker is Wunderlist. Thankfully there's a ton of shareware offerings - check out MacUpdate.com and see what works for you.

Timesheet could not add task from existing project task assignment

HI there,
I tried to add a task in Timesheet (PWA2013) from an existing assignment. However, there is no task listed under the project when I open the dialog "Add an existing task". It only shows me the project name, I click it, nothing under the project.
Due to this issue, I could not add any existing task into the timesheet.Please look at the screenshot. The "test project" is the project name, while no any task under this project.
Any help is appreciated!

Indeed if you cannot access the server setting from the quick launch menu in the left part of PWA, you have to request administrator rights to your admin.
I would add an important comment : in PWA2013, the "close to update" PWA2010 feature no longer exists and has been replace by the "lock" feature, which works basically the same.
To unlock tasks in PWA2013,
go to server setting, manage views,
choose a project view,
insert the "lock" column,
go to the project center,
check out your project schedule,
select the view you just modified,
change the value in the lock field for the given task,
publish the project

Monitoring or the Task to the Project Team members in the Project Managemen

I came across the new requirement of my project . My client is looking for the below functionalities. Please let me know the possibilities.
1.How do you assign a specific task to the Project Team member and how do you know its progress -

If you login from Solman system to other system ( satellite systems ) executing T-codes under Transaction Tab of SOLAR01 , after landing to the satellite system - if we really doesnt have satellite system ids - though able to logged in , if we create any new transaction like - Sales orders , Bilings , etc - on whose name it will be recorded.
3. What are the standard reports we can get from Solman apart from Solar_eval , Actually looking for the reports for Project status or its progress perspectivie.

are you referring user ids here? i mean you dont have an id in the satellite system but in solution manager you have.
In this case you shouldn't be login to the satellite system. In your Trusted RFC refer check whether current user is enabled or not.
Please note person who is running Tcode from solar01 should have the same user id in satellite with Trusted authorizations on both systems.

Eclipse vs. Netbeans for large projects

I've been getting a bit fed up with Netbeans this last year, to tell the truth. The main bugbear is all the "project scanning" that goes on when you make the least change to libraries etc.. It's also got some very nasty habits, like I'm typing a method name and the auto-completion suddenly substitutes a completely different method, presumably on the basis of what I was typing a second ago, and I'm still having debugger problems on my largest program.
And the metadata database all this project scanning produces is unreliable, about once a week I have to delete the whole thing and let it be built again. Several releases have gone past without these fundamentals being fixed, the developers have more fun adding facilities for the next language I'm never likely to use.
Anyway, enough ranting. The question in my mind is, should I finally give up and switch to eclipse, am I going to find it has it's own problems just as annoying? So this question is addressed to people who have used both on large projects. Is the grass really greener on the other side?
I'm irritated that there's no open source plug-in for mattise. I have several forms created under Netbeans. If we're going to MyEclipse does this mean I should consider the other commercial Java IDEs?

Through my career I've had to support users in real life that have issues just as you describe, but with Product X, while I'm not saying this is what is ailing you--because I've not seen anything about what you are doing or running--here are some of my findings:
1 - (and this is the #1 cause that I've run across for this type of thing) How much stuff are you running in memory at startup? Those little icons down in the tray actually represent programs running in memory that each take up a finite and distinct part of your available memory, and some of them stream information or access the internet and other rerources frequently. I once answered a ticket from a person that had a huge box, for the time, he had 30--yes, that is right 30--programs loading on startup. His complaint was that the machine took a long time to start and then was sluggish. I unloaded everything and had him run his apps--amazingly, he was delighted with the speed and wanted to know what I had done. I then had to tell him the bad news: he couldn't monitor the stock exchange, weather, recieve up to the minute nascar happenings, and etc. He didn't like it, but it fixed his problem. I later went back to find he had 20 of them reloaded--20 seemed to him a happy compromise between instant information and speed.
2 - Virtual memory--none or too small. I've found a few people that run without a swap file... it runs great until memory gets full, then bad things happen.
3 - Other programs competing for resources. I see this all the time, one program is trying to do I/O and being blocked by another.
4 - Hardware issures. Often the hardware just wares out. For instance: a fan stops or slows down on a video card and the whole system slows down as the GPU overheats--not enough to shut everything off, but maybe just enough that your super fast system become a dog.
5 - Hardware conflicts--this is not nearly as frequent a problem as in the Standardization Era post '96, but it does still happen. Check your hardware manager and the drivers being used.
6 - Out of date driver issues... enough said there, we've all had them.
7 - HD fragmentation--this is not so common, but does happen still.
8 - Low Memory (this should be moved up to #2) People still persist in undervaluing the worth of extra memory. There isn't an amount of RAM supported on a computer that represents too much RAM. RAM is cheap, RAM is good, MAX RAM is even best. (btw--with 3 GB you shouldn't have problems running NetBeans.)
9 - Installation issues. Not everything installs properly and when it doesn't install properly it's not always a reported error.
10 - Configuration problems. Sometimes new features can be very annoying and can be turned off.
11 - Believe it or not, OS's are not perfect and they need to be tuned up from time to time. If you are running Windows, then clean out your temporary files area, not just your Internet Temporary Files Area, but the system temporary files area. If you've been running heavily, then I guarantee you have 1000's of temporary files that are choking your performance as Windows tries to keep track of them. Delete them.
12 - Part of your program or resource your program uses may have become corrupt. This happens more that we like to admit.
There are tons of other things, but these at the big 12 that I usually go looking for when I get a call saying computer problems are beating them up.

FCP 7.0 problems opening a large project.

My FCP 7.0 suddenly got slow in opening. Took forever to open despite it having always opened quickly. I have a large project (about 115 minutes) but it still was opening OK until yesterday when it slowed down.
I have done the following:
1) Threw away my preferences and caches using Preference Manager
2) repaired permissions (utility etc)
3) Checked my Hard Drive - its OK.
4) Re installed FCP 7.0
Suddenly it didn't open at all. I get an error code - 1712
What the heck is going on? Can anyone explain please?

Project 2013- Trying a to move a task within the project and have it respect new predecessor rather than old one

Ok, I am working on a rather large project schedule.
Before having to upgrade to Project 2013, the file was used in Project 2007.
Basically I am having a problem with moving tasks only to have them still respect their old predecessor instead of just the new one.
Basically I have 4 tasks ( with start dates): Task A: 1st of month, Task B: 5th of month, Task C: 9th of month, Task D: 13th of month.
I would want to move say Task D infront of Task B and have it go A/1st, D/5th, B/9th, C/13th. But all that happens is that the tasks change order but all the dates remain with their original tasks. This wasn't a problem before Project 2013.
Is there any fix for this outside of having to unlink and relink every time I make change?

You're right, it doesn't work the same in Project 2010 & later as it did in Project 2007 and earlier. The feature you desire is controlled by the option setting to autolink inserted or moved tasks. As far as I can tell there is a bug that was likely
introduced when manual scheduling was added to Project 2010. Now, if the option is set, two links will be set up, the original link to the old predecessor and a new one to the new predecessor.
I'm surprised this bug hasn't been fixed but I guess it's not something a lot of users have an issue with. Meanwhile, edit your links after drag and drop as Rod suggests.

BUG. 10.1.3.EA: Internal Compilation error. Large project.

I tried to compile large project (~4,000 classes) using extenal "javac" compiler and 1.4.2 JDK. When I "clean the project" and then run "make" the follwoing error frequently ocures. Once it fails it's true both for entire project and if I try to compile a single class not depending on anything else. This makes me to beleive that the problem is not related to any particular class (also see notes below, looks like "javac" process doesn't even start).

It doesn't happen if I use "rebuild" function instead of "make". It doesn't happen always but most of the times. I tried different versions of 1.4.2 (02,03,04) and don't see any specific pattern.
Also looks like once I "rebuild" the project, "make" runs ok.
I run Task Monitor and here is what I found out:
- CPU maxs out at 100% for about 10 - 15 % and then the error is reported;
- Error is reported before "javac" process is started;
- There is plenty of memory available. I have 1 G with 640 set as max for JDeveloper, but it doesn't exceed 400 MB.
I compiled a smaller project (~1,000 files) and didn't have this problem.
I wont' be able to send the sorce code but I can send project files if it helps.
Is there any logging I could enable to get more information? Did anybody reported anything similar? Is there any configuration parameters I can play with?

Archive large project

I have an iMovie project that is 18GB. I want to archive it for possible editing later. I want to have it both on an external hard drive and also save to DVD. What is the correct way to accomplish this? When I try the "Burn Project to Disc" option, iMovie tells me it's too big to fit on a single DVD (duh).

Hi debito - there are not many options to accomplish what you want. the external drive option is by far the best for the size of project you have. Make sure that it is formatted for Macs. You would need several single-layer DVDs, and the project would be split into several parts. iMovie HD can't span large projects to multiple DVDs so you must use an application like Toast for this task.

Advance Search not working in Document Management Task Flow

We are using Document management task flow to manage UCM content. The simple search works for us but the Advance search does not work. Does anyone know of any possible reason why this could happen. Any hint would be really appreciated.

So in my scenario when I try to search the content using the simple search which is present at the right hand top corner I get the search result properly. But when I try to search by clicking on the Advance link which gives me a option to search by Filename, Keywords and adding other filters, it always returns zero search results.
