Manual delete old files before package installation?

This is more a general or best practice question.
I installed a python program (gnoduino) manually some time ago using:
python setup.py build install
I found out that this program is available via AUR and it would be comfortable to use the AUR version.
So what should I do now. Manually delete everything that the python installer installed, with hope not to forget anything. And after that install via AUR?
Or leave it installed and start the install process via AUR and "overwrite" the old files?
In the first case: How do I delete everything?
whereis gnoduino
gnoduino: /usr/bin/gnoduino /usr/share/gnoduino /usr/share/man/man1/gnoduino.1
And I know that the python files reside in "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gnoduino".
Delete these files and I'm fine?

Best practice would be to rebuild that package and uninstall, or use the built but not installed copy to locate and remove the files.
Bad practice and also my method would be to install with the -f flag and overwrite it.
However this could lead to breakage and more work if it goes wrong.

  • Deleting old files on new installation of cs2

I recently bought cs2 design premium for my second computer . unlike the installing of later cs versions which I recall have an UNINSTALL file I believe the cs2 does not (I have not opened it in case it needs to be returned).
I have a number of older ADOBE software packages on my computer VIZ photoshop; illustrator; Dreamweaver and Fireworks - does anyone know if I will need to delete/remove these files before installation of CS2? if so where do I find the files and what method of removal do I use. I also have earlier versions in OSX9 (Classic); Do I need to remove these also?
I am currently using Mac OSX 10.4.11

Richard,<br />> i am sure most software houses will eventually find a way of limiting this problem so that the legitimate retail outlets sellng back issues can trade safely without doubt cast upon them.<br /><br />Your comment is just not the way it is in this world. And please understand that we have YOUR best interests at heart -- not those of the outfit that sold you the goods.<br /><br />There is some legitimate older new and used software, but it can be hard to discern in the middle of a forest of counterfeit or other illegal goods. Hey, you can even find legitimate 1959 Barbie dolls in the original boxes!  <g><br /><br />But, with the availability of cheap, high-end technology, anyone can make pretty realistic disc copies and inkjet or digitally-printed art, and then apply shrinkwrap. In addition, folks have been sold "full versions" only to find out they are just the upgrades which cannot be properly installed and registered.<br /><br />So, you should question the seller as to where they got their CS2, as this product series has been out of production for a number of years. Even someone who has nearly "100% positive feedback" from eBay. And check with Adobe if the software can be registered in your name. And (I hope) you paid by credit card, and not check or cash, so you can dispute the charge if you suspect it is other than what you've been promised.<br /><br />Neil

  • My 2 TB Time Capsule's memory is full because it will not automatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zero backup of my two computers now.  How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and saves the new?

My 2 TB Time Capsule’s memory is full because it will notautomatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zerobackup of my two computers now. How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and savesthe new?
Neither my local computer consultant nor I have been ableto change any of the settings in Time Machine to correct this problem.  Working with the choices in the TimeMachine, there does not appear that there is any way to change the frequency ofthe backups either, so, after a year has elapsed, the time capsule is full, andmy only choice appears to be to erase all the current data on the Time Capsuleand start over, something that I do not want to at all let alone repeat on anannual basis.  My questions are:
What can be done to have my Time Capsule delete old filesas it is supposed to do, so it has memory available to allow my computers toback up?
Is this a software problem that can be fixed online or isdoes this require a mechanical fix of defective hardware?

How much data is being backed-up from each Mac?  (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
Most likely, there just isn't room.  Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't.  Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).

  • Delete old files on my video ipod

I am a new ipod user and have a video ipod. I have been downloading podcasts to my ipod for a week or so. Even though in my itunes I keep only the newest episodes, my ipod retains all previous episodes. However, when I go to my ipod in the source list, all the podcast items are de-highlighted and I can not select or delete.
Can someone point me to a way to delete old files on my ipod?
    Thanks!

    Try this:
In iTunes click on "Podcast", you don't need to have your iPod connected.
Highlight the file you want to delete and press the DELETE key on your keyboard. It will ask if you want to delete the file. If you want to just remove it from your iPod and want to keep the original file on your computer select "Keep Files". If you want to remove from both, select "Move to crcycle bin". This is for PC. If you use a Mac the wording might be slightly different but the principle should be the same.
When you're all done deleting, connect your iPod and the podcasts will be automatically removed from your iPod.
    Hope it helps.

  • Time Machine SparseDisk Fails to Delete Old Files

I'm running Time Machine on the new 7.3.1 patch and have finally filled the drive. At first everything was going smoothly until I realized that Time Machine is not deleting old files to make room for new ones.
I found this out when I realized Time Machine stop backing up to it because the drive is full. Why is the sparsedisk not getting smaller or making room for newer backups?
Is it because this feature is unsupported?

Time Machine will delete old backups, if it can.  So something must be wrong.  See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If nothing there helps, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • How do I get Time Machine to delete old files?

On threads for earlier operating systems I've seen similar questions, and it seems Apple hasn't resolved the problem that although Time Machine says it will delete old files when the disc is full, it doesn't do it, even though my hard drive has only ~300 GB of files on it and my external hard drive has 1.5 T, it does nothing to delete old files automatically.  This hasn't always been the case.  The first few entries were deleted awhile back, freeing space, but that has stopped happening.  Any suggestions?  Do I have to start with a fresh external hard drive?

  • When I tried to back up my computer, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old files, the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.

I haven't backed up my computer in over a year. When I tried to back it up today, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old photos and documents (including all the pictures from the year I studied abroad/traveled a bunch), the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how I could fix it? I really don't want to lose all those photos

So you were doing a time machine backup to another partition on the same hard drive? Just trying to gather some information so i can provide a helpful response.

  • CS5 Bridge - Windows.  Can't delete old files

I have no trouble deleting new files but have tried every method and old tif and psd files refuse to delete.  Can it be because files uploaded on CS3 can't be deleted using CS5?

  • After accepting update to my time capsule, I can no longer complete a backup because there is not enough space.  I tried deleting old files, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any advice:

My time capsule was updated through an apple download update on June 16, and now I cannot back up my computer.  The message is that there is not enough space.  I tried deleting my files, but it didn't help.  any suggestions?

How much space is there according to airport utility?
TM can be fussy.. Do a factory reset of the TC and give it a new name. Use short, no space and pure alphanumeric type names..
And reset TM. See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Then set up TM again to the TC and see if TM will start .. the reset will not hurt the backup and TM can still find it on a renamed TC.

  • VBScript to read the content of a .csv file and delete old files mentioned in the .csv

    I have a Windows 2003 file server.
I have generated a report in .csv format, about the files which are older than 1 year.
I need a VBScript to read the .csv file and delete the files which are enlisted there.
Can someone please help me with this?

Look into the "Learn" link above.  There are resources and instructions on how to write VBScript code.  Look into how to use the FileSystemObject.

  • Permanently deleting old files Ive put in trash.

I know that some files will leave bits and pieces around after I have put them in the trash and clicked "empty trash". How do I permanently delete these files? I know there is some sort of application to do it, and I would like for my computer to run better, and I dont see why the "10 things I hate about you" movie ive already deleted and put on my ipod is still hurting my comp. Thank you very much.

Once you delete something it's gone ...at least as far as the system is concerned. You can use 'Secure Empty Trash' from the Finder drop-down menu to more thoroughly delete something. If an item is still lingering around ...perhaps you only deleted a part of it and it may have extra files in other locations.
    This app may help...
