Manual file maintenance

I want to clean up stray and unwanted files (temp, for example) that might be weighing my iMac down.
Where do I begin? Also, can I search my hard drive for specified file sizes (say, Greater than 50MB)

Hi Rick,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?

Then I'd get EasyFind...

Near the bottom of the page.
And a great tool also is Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Leopard File Maintenance

    Does Leopard carry out some form of file maintenance that might be similar to PC commands such as defrag?
    If so, are such routines automated requiring no user input, or are user commands required?
    Assuming no Mac Leopard particular knowledge, what if anything should I be doing on a regular basis to ensure my files remain healthy and my MBP does not become sluggish and fat due to bloated and fragmented files?
    As always, thanks for your advice!

    OS X automatically defrags files under 20 MBs in size. There's virtually no need to do any disk defragmentation.
    Files only become "bloated" if you keep adding to them and making them larger. They don't "bloat" on their own.
    Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
    OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
    I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
    For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
    When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

    Others may remark that since Tiger the Unix maintenance scripts run automatically regardless of whether the computer has been asleep or shut down. Although this is true under some circumstances it is not altogether correct. The following is an excerpt from the XLab's FAQ on the topic:
    "How the timer used by launchd handles sleep time has led many to believe that they no longer need to run the maintenance scripts, and that the scripts are run automatically if the Mac was asleep or shutdown at the scheduled time, ala third-party utilities such as Anacron. However, this is untrue.
    While it may appear that launchd executes the maintenance scripts "on the fly" if the computer is asleep or shutdown at the appointed time, this is a side effect of how the timer treats time the computer has spent in sleep mode. The timer used by launchd does not count sleep time. If your Mac is asleep at the scheduled time at which a given script is supposed to run, the script may run later that day, at a time shifted by the amount of time the Mac was asleep. However, if you restart your Mac before the time-shifted execution time, pending events are lost and the script will not run off-schedule: the next chance for the script to run will be at its regularly scheduled time.
    If you regularly restart your Mac and the computer regularly sleeps or is shutdown at the scheduled times, it's possible that the scripts will never run, hence one should still run them manually, say on a weekly basis.
    The sleep time shift is also cumulative. For example, if you don't restart your Mac for weeks or months at a time, but let it sleep when not in use, this can result in:
    The daily script running once every few days or never.
    The weekly script once every few weeks or never.
    The monthly script once every few months or never.
    The time shift in each case is the total amount of time the Mac has spent in sleep since its last restart. If you have a process that writes heavily to the logs, you can wind up devoting good hard disk space to the log files."

  • File maintenance

    I use the kludge of making a bogus entry in the beats per second field in order to find deleted files. First off letting us sort on the information field that indicates a missing file would simplify file maintenance, and eliminate that step. That way we don't have to do time consuming modification of first editing the beats field with an addition of a number so we can find the missing files, and then re-editing it to remove the entry.
    Second, if you could automatically sense the new file location, like other tools (Real and Media Player) do you would provide a comparable tool.

  • How do I read a downloaded manual file for Satellite 1800?

    I downloaded the file named S1800MnlME.EXE from the Australian Toshiba site. I didn't download it to the notebook to which it applies (model PS181A-00UK5), but to a different computer.
    I double-clicked on the file. I got a window on the screen. The title bar said "WinZip Self-Extractor" and the file name. In the window, it said "Hyper Text for Satellite 1800" and I was invited to click "Setup". I did. I got a window that said "Installing Hyper Text for Satellite 1800". Then, I was told that installation was finished and to reboot. I did. On reboot, I can't find any new files though, just the original one.
    What am I doing wrong? Will this only work on the Toshiba notebook itself?
    Thanks for reading this.
    Leslie

    The problem's solved. There were files in a new folder on the C: drive called docs. Double-clicking on MVSHELL in that folder opened the manual.

  • Completion date for manually created maintenance notification

    Hi All,
    When closing maintenance notification created manually by t-code- IW21,there is no field to enter completion date & time. System is proposing the current  date as completion  date by default. However , as I have flagged u201Ccompletion datau201D  in maintenance plan category for notification ,system is asking/proposing completion date/time during NOCO of preventive maintenance.
    Where I can do settings in configuration so that system  will ask/propose to enter completion date/time during NOCO of manually created notification by t-code IW21?
    rgds
    rajib

    In notification type views you have option to set Reference date & time- if you set it to A- Malfunction start date & time will
    be proposed, if  you set it to B- Notification receipt date & time will be proposed, if you set it to C- Malfunction end time will
    be proposed, & in case of D - current date & time of completion of notification will be proposed while completing notification.
    Better set it to B & make the field malfunction start date & time mandatory  so that your history will be with reference to malfunction start. Or you can set it to A, C or D as per your requirement

  • Simple manual file rearrangement in Finder

    I've been using my iMac for almost 2 weeks now and stumbled upon a problem of some sort:
    I am unable to manually drag and drop my photos inside the Finder to rearrange their order.
    I dont need all the other automated sorting options. All i need is to be able go in the photos folder using icon view, click on a photo (any file) and drag it where i want it to be.
    I know i can just use the view options to turn any sorting off, but then the files tend to get scattered all over the place. I need them to be nicely gritted AND manually movable/swapable.
    I know this problem exists on Windows 7 and is not fixed yet.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Yes, I do understand what you mean. And i do get the same results as you when using the "Snap to Grid" settings, but that's not what i need.
    An example. Let's imagine a folder with 3 .jpg files. Named 1.jpg, 2.jpg and 3.jpg. All in that order. With no grid spaces empty between them. The folder is using the "snap to grid" setting and all the icons are aligned perfectly and all is well. But now i want to change the file order like this: 1.jpg, 3.jpg, 2.jpg. The easiest way to do that is to do these 3 steps:
    1) Click on 3.jpg and hold
    2) Drag the file 3.jpg inbetween 1.jpg and 2.jpg
    3) Drop the file
    What should happen: the file 2.jpg should automatically slide a bit to the grid place on the right and make way for the 3.jpg, thus making effectively the order 1.jpg, 3.jpg, 2.jpg.
    What is happening and what i want to get solved: i click, i drag and when i drop the file it slides back the way it came from, with no order changed whatsoever.
    I hope i was clear enough. This is very important for me and i would really hate to find out, that on Mac this basic file sorting thing is not implemented.

  • Manual file transfer of podcast files unavailable?

    Is it me, or is it impossible to manually add podcast files on to my iPhone. Not only on podcasts, but on other music on my little Nano, I have been able to drag and drop files, and now I can only use sync mode?? Am I missing something?

    You may want to use something like the XMODEM protocol.
    I believe you can find a version of XMODEM that can be used with an NI-VISA session located here on the OpenG forums.

  • First experiences with LR 5.0: manual file selection and  Adjustment Brush

    I must admit that I have not fiddled too long with LR 5.0. The reason is quite simple: its extreme slowness, even in comparison with 4.4, which is far from being fast. After slightly retouching some 40 images I fell back to 4.4 and finished testing 5.5 for a while. Anyway, in addition to the speed problem I have collected some - also not too promising - experiences:
    After initially retouching the first image I wanted to copy some of its settings into the rest of the photos. Before clicking on the Sync button I had to select all the target files. Probably because of the relatively small number of images, instead of going to the "Edit / Select All" function I used "Shift+Right Arrow" for the selection. LR simply crashed...
    In several cases I was not able to re-open and modify formerly 'adjustment-brushed' areas. When I moved the cursor above the relevant white 'knob-shaped' mark, nothing happened. The cursor did not even change to hand form, so the "Effect" panel remained dark and the formerly set parameters did not come up. As I kept the cursor there for ages and the image was not 'over-adjusted' (as also indicated by the small size of the associated XMP file), this failure was surely not a result of the above-referred slowness.
    Once I selected an already retouched image, with the Adjustment Brush tool open. The existing adjustment mark came up over a formerly brushed area. Then, without doing anything with the open image, I moved to the next picture. To my surprise, the Adjustment Brush marks of both photos appeared on the last opened image - the one, which belonged to the previous picture and another, associated with the second picture. It goes without saying that I was not able to click on any of the Adjustment Brush marks. Closing and re-opening the Adjustment Brush tool did not help, so I had to restart LR.

  • Collection and manual file upload

    okay, I have a collection. With this collection there can be at least one row or there could be many. Some of the fields are user updateable. So pretty much I have a tabular form on a collection. I have all my page processes to handle the table and perform DML the table correctly. I now have a requirement to be able to upload a file for each row. Therefore what I did was this....
    ....,'<input name="f18" type="file"/>' as "Disposal Document"....in my select list for my collection. FYI it is PL/SQL returning SQL.
    Then in the page processing when I "save" off the collection using the collection API i saved G_F18(i) in clob001. Then just did an insert statement into my table based on the collection. Cool...nothing too hard.
    Now to download an image on another page that calls this javascript, just so the document opens in a new window...
    function documentpoup(disposal_id){
    window.open('/pls/apex/#OWNER#.download_file?pid='+disposal_id,'Attachment','width=800,height=600,toolbar=yes,location=yes,directories=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,copyhistory=yes,resizable=yes');
    </script>now my procedure converts my clob into a blob to download it...
      l_mime_type                varchar2(255);
      l_length                number;
      l_content_file_name           varchar2(2000);
      l_content_file           blob;
      myclob clob;
    l_dest_offset   integer := 1;
    l_source_offset integer := 1;
    l_lang_context  integer := DBMS_LOB.DEFAULT_LANG_CTX;
    l_warning       integer := DBMS_LOB.WARN_INCONVERTIBLE_CHAR;
    begin
      select null, disposal_document, item_number||'-'|| org_code ,dbms_lob.getlength(disposal_document)
        into l_mime_type, myclob, l_content_file_name, l_length
        from material_disposal
        where disposal_id = pid;
      DBMS_LOB.CREATETEMPORARY(l_content_file, TRUE);
      DBMS_LOB.CONVERTTOBLOB
       dest_lob    =>l_content_file,
       src_clob    =>myclob,
       amount      =>DBMS_LOB.LOBMAXSIZE,
       dest_offset =>l_dest_offset,
       src_offset  =>l_source_offset,
       blob_csid   =>DBMS_LOB.DEFAULT_CSID,
       lang_context=>l_lang_context,
       warning     =>l_warning
      owa_util.mime_header(nvl(l_mime_type,'application/msword'), FALSE );
      htp.p('Content-length: ' || l_length);
      htp.p('Content-Disposition: inline; filename="' || l_content_file_name || '"');
      owa_util.http_header_close;
      wpg_docload.download_file(l_content_file);  When the file downloads all I have in my "docuemnt" is the name of the file...It is like the file is not actually being uploaded. So something is wrong.... :(
    Some more info. The reason I am doing a CLOB and not just BLOB is becasue of the collection. If I could figure out a way not to mess with the CLOB and only use the BLOB that would be cool, but since I am not using an apex item and I am using just html...for some reason the files will not go into the wwv_flow_files table. I have done a dummy page to test this and I can't get it to work...i.e. if I have an apex item that is a file browse type then the file is uploaded, but if I have an html region with an input type of file then that file is not uploaded....has anyone seen or had to do anything like this???or could anyone point me in the right direction?!?
    Thanks,
    David

    does anyone have any ideas?

    Hey I have a very old site file that I use for a site that I update almost daily (for many many years).  Lately the site file will just crash GLCS2 and I will have to throw it out and use the backup.  Thankfully it works but I would like to know if I need to do something.  I have flattened the script library and updated the site file, but I don't want to clean up the site file.  That looks like it will bloat up the site file.
    Any advice?

  • File maintenance/management

    I've recently converted from PC to Mac. I'm revelling in the new environment but I'm learning that Mac's are not without their frustrations also.
    I imported all my photos into the internal hardrive and imported them into IPhoto. It's seems that I must have two copies of the files as the photos must be imported from a location other than the iphoto library. I thought I was clever by deleting the original photos and keeping those in the iphoto library but now iphoto is unable to pick them up. This seems a little silly as at 4mb each it's totally impractical as well as illogical to need two of every photo. Is there a way around this?
    I'm having other problems with file maitenance. when I'm sorting through my latest photo rolls, I decide what to keep and what to delete. Is there a way to delete a file in iphoto which will also delete the photo off the hard drive?
    Would be very grateful for assistance to overcome these difficulties.

    Electric987
    Welcome to the Mac and to the DIscussions
    1. There are two major ways that you can file manage in iPhoto. The default method is that the photos are imported into the application and the actual files are copied to the iPhoto Library Folder. Once you are sure that they are safely in iPhoto you can then delete the files fom elsewhere on your hard drive.
    2. The second way is to leave the files in your own filing system (go to iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced -> Uncheck Copy Files to iPhoto Library Folder when Importing) There are pluses and minuses to either system and they are discussed all over these discussions.
    I don't understand the particular problem that you describe, can you give more detail?
    Everything you need to do, edit (either in iPhoto or another app), sort, arrange, tag, export (file -> export or just drag and drop onto the desktop) and so on can be done through the iPhoto window. iPhoto always works on a copy of the file so that the original is preserved and can be returned to (Photos -> Revert To Original).
    IF you opt for option one, then moving a photo to the iPhoto trash will remove the photo from the Finder when you empty the iPhoto trash. (This gives you the option to change your mind...)
    If you opt for option 2, then you'll have to delete by hand.
    hope this helps

  • Fcp file maintenance

    After capturing video, I usually go through and create named subclips. As the number of my fcp projects grows, they contain a rich vein of information that becomes more and more difficult to mine. Is there software that will compile a master list of all my named subclips (from all fcp projects)so that I can easily scroll through all my named subclips?
    Thanks!

    Final Cut Server is designed to catalog video and many other types of files using several categories of metadata that you can customize. It probably does a lot more than you need for this specific use, but would certainly get the job done. I'm not sure of the workflow to get the metadata from FCP into Final Cut Server, but I'm sure you wouldn't have to type all that stuff in again.
    Another solution is simply to add all those clips to one master project in FCP. Figure out what types of info you are going to use in each comment field, etc. You can use the find command to sort these, then make some new bins in the project to organize them into different groups. Dragging clips from the find results window will not move them from their original locations, but will create a new instance of the clip in the project without duplicating its media.
    Hope this helps...

  • Suggestions for how to execute file maintenance in SQL Agent Job

    I need to create a SQL Agent Job (it has to be a SQL agent job) to zip all files in a directory, delete all files in the directory but the zip file and then copy the zip file to another location across a UNC path. What are some suggestions for getting

    How do you mark useful answers? I have not seen how to do that.
    On the left of each response you have an icon (small image).
    I have asked lots of questions on the TechNet and other forums. (One day I hope to even answer some.) That was the first time I had ever marked my own as the answer. Honestly, I did not use any of those well meaning replies and did not feel that any of them
    answered my question. When researching a topic I, like most people, I look at the marked answer first and assume it is the answer. Did not feel that  any of them were the answer. There is a great push on this forum to mark the answer and there are droves
    of people clamoring for points (BTW - you are not one of them). I review each of my questions, always follow up on any  replies, post my solution if appropriate, and always try to close the topic. But this one was not answered.
    OK, that is logic, If you dont think that you use other response as part of the answer. In my opinion (and you dont have to get it) if an answer is build from 3 responses together then we need to mark all the three (and mentioned in the summery what we have
    done). If you find that those response cant be called "answer" since they do not cover enough then maybe your call was correct.
    Please close the thread in the way that you feel is OK :-)
    (you dont have to accept my opinion since you have your explanation, but i do think that some of the responses there are answers).
