Manually Entering Primary Key.

Hi,
I am in the very early stages of looking at creating Apex Forms/Reports to replace our existing systems on Oracle Forms.
In the existing database, there are huge numbers of tables that use manually enterable primary keys when creating the record.
These primary keys can be very simple, such as just a 6 character code field or 20 character reference field (made up of several different user enterable fields concatenated together) to multiple composiite primary keys, where there could be several levels of master/detail records.
I have looked in the forums for information on this but am struggling to find a way of being able to create records where the primary key can be typed in manually when inserting records and then getting the reports/forms to work. I do not need to update the primary key, just allow it to be entered.
It would just not be practical to create new sequences as primary keys for all our tables, just to get Apex to work how it wants - wouldn't this mean dropping the existig PK and creating a new one, then populating all records with the new sequence?
I need to be able to use tabular forms for multi row record inserts where the user can enter (but not modify) the PK - using a report/form to do this seems too long winded. I will also need to be able to do this in a form only, for inserting singular records.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Carl

you should set in your entity object the attribute as DBSequence and then create a before insert trigger in the db table to get the pk from a sequence or so, something like:
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER trigger_name
BEFORE INSERT
ON table_name
FOR EACH ROW
begin
select seq_name.nextval into :new.pk_id from dual;
end;

  • Create record with manual guid / primary key

    Hi All,
    Is this possible to create record in some entity in dynamics crm with set manual id / primary key / guid?
    like this:
    Entity entity = new Entity("new_test");
          entity.Attributes["new_testid"] = new Guid("688008C8-F95D-4158-BAB2-A3F695D7BEEF");
          entity.Attributes["trs_name"] = "AAAAA";
          organizationservice.Create(entity);
    is there any impact if I do that?
    please advise.
    thanks

    I have try it my development server, and it's work
    actually, this question for my requirement that need do integrate between another system to CRM, which the another system has guid as their PK (primary key) and they push their record to CRM using CRM web service and put their PK / guid value as Id in CRM's
    entity that they pushed.
    but, I have consult with microsoft support with this technique and I don't want get trouble in later time, and they said this is not recommended from microsoft, even it work as I said before.
    thanks.

  • Apex Form - how to enter primary key value manually?

    Hi
    Whenever I am creating Apex form using wizard, it asks me to specify trigger/sequence/pl/sql function for populating primary key value.
    However, if I want to specify primary key myself (ie. not auto generated number), how I can specify that?
    Thanx

    Hello,
    By Yourself you mean : by hand or by a pl/sql?
    If you say by trigger, the system doesn't care about what number is send. So you can give it "manually"
    May I ask what is the reason of that?
    Cheers,

  • How to build a tabular form with a by the user insertable primary key

    I have build a build a tabular form with the wizzard. Wat should I do to make the primary key insertable by the user.
    When I change the PK from 'hidden' to 'text field', I get a checksum error when i am trying to insert.

    Fred: When you use the tabular form wizard, notice the help text on the right hand side of each page. The help page where you define the type of primary key (Existing trigger, PL/SQL function, existing sequence) clearly states
    Tabular forms do not support user entered primary key values
    Makes sense when you think about it. The MRU process needs to determine whether to update a record or insert a new record. It does that by comparing the checksums (and/or) pk values from when the page was first rendered and then when you make changes and submit it. Newly inserted rows will have a blank PK/checksum.
    If you allow user to change the PK, how will the system know which rows are new and which ones are old?
    For example, lets say you have
    create table t
    pk int primary key,
    data varchar2(10)
    )You have 2 rows
    1 red
    2 yellow
    If the PK were to be editable, user could go in and change the above to
    2 red
    1 yellow
    Now what? Would you like the system to create a new row with 1/yellow or change the existing pk=1 row to yellow? Same with the other row.
    Bottom line: The built-in processes dont support this. You can always write your own manual tabular form and implement whatever you logic you wish in your After Submit processes.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I use Primary Key and RowID in Materialized View Logs and MVs

    How do I use Primary Key and RowID in Materialized View Logs and Materialized Views????
    I don’t understand in the Materalized View Logs the diference between Primary Key and RowID. Besides, I could choose both Primary Key and RowID.
    When I have to use RowID?? Why?? And Primary Key??? And both, Primary Key and RowID????
    Thank you very much!

    Yes, I have already read it...
    But for example I don’t Understand:
    This is the example 8-1
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG ON products
    WITH SEQUENCE, ROWID
    (prod_id, prod_name, prod_desc, prod_subcategory, prod_subcat_desc, prod_
    category, prod_cat_desc, prod_weight_class, prod_unit_of_measure, prod_pack_
    size, supplier_id, prod_status, prod_list_price, prod_min_price)
    INCLUDING NEW VALUES;
    But if I create a Materialized View with TOAD if I choose a KEY field I receive the error:
    ORA-12026: invalid filter column detected
    Then I have to take out the Key (in the above example prod_id)
    And then the script is
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG ON products
    WITH ROWID, SEQUENCE, PRIMARY KEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    (prod_id, prod_name, prod_desc, prod_subcategory, prod_subcat_desc, prod_
    category, prod_cat_desc, prod_weight_class, prod_unit_of_measure, prod_pack_
    size, supplier_id, prod_status, prod_list_price, prod_min_price)
    INCLUDING NEW VALUES;
    I have PRIMARY KEY in the definition (I don’t choose it) and I don’t have the prod_id field
    Why is it????
    Note: If I execute the script to create the MV Log manually the PRIMARY KEY option NO IS in the script and the prod_id field either is in the script.
    And on the other hand,
    What is this:
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG ON sales
    WITH ROWID;
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG ON times
    WITH ROWID;
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG ON customers
    WITH ROWID;
    These MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG contain any fields????
    Or it contain the primary key fields of this tables (sales, times and customers)??? Then, Why is it ROWID instead of PRIMARY KEY????
    Thanks!

  • Reset Manually Entered Constrained Forecast Key Figure

    We use Demand Planning to forecast future Sales Volumes.  Not too sophisticated.  We take a monthly extract from R/3 which summarize the last months Sales Actuals.
    based on a given period of Sales History we then run a statistical forecast whicgh generates future months foreasts.
    Once a manual adjustment has been made to a key figure by either Acciount Manager/Marketing Group?Demand Planner, that particular field is highlighted in 'YELLOW'.  Once this is done any future copies of stat numbers into those fields does not overwrite the users manual inputs.  As you would expect.
    However we have some apparently manually entered values in our Constrained Key Figures that are completely incorrect.  However because the cells are yellow, the copy key figure macro will not be able to overwrite these values.  Is ther a way I can somehow reset these yellow cells so that they no longer resist the copying of data into them.
    Apologies if I am using the incorrect terminology here.
    Thanks for anything you can suggest.

    I think your requirement could be met by exploring macro functions CELL_BG(), CELL_FG(), CELL_INPUT(), ROW_BG(), ROW()FG or ROW_INPUT() functions. All the macro functions can be made conditional, example a specific technical/business situation leads to color/editability etc.

  • How do I let user enter a primary key value on a form

    I'm creating my first APEX application. I have a simple table called HOSTS with 2 columns HOSTNAME and IP_ADDRESS. HOSTNAME is the primary key for the table. HOSTNAME is a perfectly acceptable primary key and I don’t wish to create an additional column to be populated by a sequence.
    What are my options for creating a form on the table without using "Existing trigger", "Custom PL/SQL function" or "Existing Sequence" to populate the primary key column, i.e. HOSTNAME, so that the user can enter a value for the primary key?
    Any assistance greatly appreciated.
    Gavin

    The debate about natural keys versus surrogate keys
    will no doubt continue with advocates for both sides.
    However there is also a difference between
    'making your life easier' for APEX development and
    'making your life more difficult' by having to
    analyse, implement and deploy a surrogate key only
    approach to an existing database which employs both
    natural keys and surrogate keys.
    hould we be forced to change the database design
    because a development tool does not cater for natural
    primary keys?The application development product is TRYING to save you from shooting yourself in the foot. The idea is to separate the primary key from being accessed by the user or ANY carbon based unit.. The key is mainly used by the system to join and lookup data rows, not for people to change whenever they decide that the key is WRONG.
    Think about this, if you use Last Name as a key in your system (a bad idea to begin with since this is NOT a unique id when you have two Smiths). When a person needs to change this because Jimmy Smith is NOT the only Smith working for Acme Toys, you have to cascade that change through all the child tables related to the main person table.
    If instead you use a system generated key, no change will be required since the key has NO relation to the data other than it represents a pointer to that row of data.
    Works for me, since I do not want to write all the supporting code when APEX builds it for you...
    Thank you,

  • Need to manually update an automatic primary key sequence

    EDIT:  I think this is actually a privileges issue not letting me see the sequences.  Sorry for the trouble
    Hi everyone. I actually didn't know this was possible until I came across this table. This table has a primary key that autoupdates without a trigger or a sequence. so...
    id name
    1 jim
    2 mark
    insert into t1 (name) values ('bob') :
    id name
    1 jim
    2 mark
    3 bob
    My problem is that I manually inserted some rows into this table with the id's as part of the insert statement and now the old way doesn't work. I am assuming because wherever this sequence is it still thinks 3 is the next value. Does anyone know how i can update this value so that the bob-style insert will work again? There are no triggers or sequences in this database (according to what I'm looking at in SQL Navigator. Thanks!

  • Primary key column in manual tabular form

    I am creating a manual tabular form and am unsure what to do for my primary key column. When I do this with the wizard, I'm allowed to specifiy a Primary Key Source Type and the Primary Key Source (my sequence). Is there a way to do this in a manual tabular form?
    I'm creating the column with the call 'wwv_flow_item.display_and_save(2,hours_id) hours_id' but when I edit the 'Tabular Form Element' section, I don't have the Primary Key fields anywhere to edit...only Reference Table Owner, Reference Table/Column Name. Where can I specify the sequence?
    Thanks,
    Janel

    In the process ApplyMRD, try specifying the 'Secondary Key Column' in the section 'Source: Multi Row Update and Delete' to the second key column in the tabular form.
    I haven't tested this with your situation, but worth a shot.

  • Help - How do I manually configure SQLServer primary key?

    The help under title "Limitations Using SQLServer" states that when running in "design time" tables with primary keys aren't picked up. I can see that it is specified under the table's structure indices but it is not offered when I try to construct a Business Component "View." The help states that "You must put a primary key in manually to compile the project." It also says that "since BC4J design time requires a key you will need to assign one attribute a key as well." So here's the paradox. I can't figure out how to tell JDeveloper what field is the primary key. Consequently, I can't construct "views" and consequently I can't define "Application Modules" and thus can't change my "Configurations" settings for it.
    For the development team, I recommend that you make specifying the application key more intuitive. Perhaps a right click on the structure field of interest could yield a drop-down list with appropriate options. For configuring database connections, perhaps right clicking the entity in the System Navigator could yield an appropriate "Configuration" option that would allow the user to map everything about the connection from there.

    Dean,
    thanks for your comments: we are actively working on making
    the tool easier to use for "foreign" databases.
    The documentation shoulkd be clearer here: you need to define your
    primary keys against the ENTITY, not the view. If you run against
    Oracle, this happens automagically, but against SQL*Server, you should
    run the wizard but don't pick any tables.
    Then, right-click on the application module and invoke the
    "New Entity Wizard". After you have picked the table, you should
    see the UI to assign properties to the attributes.
    Assign a PK to one, and leave the "automatically create default view"
    checkbox selected, and you should have an ok time.
    Incidentally, if you are prepared to work a little bit with the
    SQL*Server schema, this is the workaround for the bug:
    Create a login with the same name as the owner name, for example,
    "dbo". Then our tool will recognise constraints.
    regrads, Karl

  • Error with Links if using x3 primary keys

    Hi Folks:
    Here is the error code I'm receiving:
    ORA-01422: exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows
    Unable to fetch row.
    Background: I am using Application Express 3.2
    All of the pages I have created that rely on x2 primary keys (first_name, last_name) work fine.
    I have a table that has x3 primary keys: Table is called "time_off_awards". The x3 primary keys are: last_name, first_name, approval_date.
    I created a report that works properly and lists the awards for each person (each person can receive more than one award-on different dates).
    I also created an edit link that works properly IF *(only if)* each individual has only one award. If the individual has more than one award then I get the error above. When I set up the link I used all three keys. The x3 PK's should uniquely identify each row, but if the same last name/first name appear more than once (that is if the person has more than one award) I get the error. I thought at first maybe it was just not reading the 3rd key/part of the link (approval_date), but it shows properly if you move your cursor over the edit link.
    Here is a link to a screen pic of how I have my link set in Apex:

    Here is a link to a pic of the report with some info:

    Thank you everyone for the help and information you gave to me.
    Your ideas and advice helped me to think through the issues involved.
    The way i actually found to work around this issue was a little different.
    What I did was the following (which may only be usable with empty tables. If its possible to create a new column with a sequence and trigger on a table that already contains data it should work also):
    1. I removed the current PK's that were currently set.
    2. I added a single, unique PK (that used a sequence and trigger to automatically increment) to the table as was suggested in this thread and other APEX forum threads.
    3. I changed the link on the report so that it used the new PK, and also changed the PK used on the forms (under Processes - both the page rendering and page processing processes).
    The Difference:
    4. Next I changed the table (not by using APEX, but directly) from using the automatically generated ID as the PK, back to using the compound PK (x3 keys). I then added an constraint to make sure that the automatically generated column was unique. So now I have the compound PK that my supervisor wants us to use, and I'm able to use a unique, automatically generated key for APEX to use.
    I found also that if you already have a column that uses a unique/auto-generated key you can still use it with APEX without switching keys around.
    1. I added the new column to the sql in the reports source section so that the new column was searched (and then used 'hidden' so it wouldn't be displayed on the report users would see).
    2. You can still add the unique key under the processes on the form that is being linked too under the Primary key tabs. If its not a PK it won't show up in the pop up which is to the right of "Item Containing Primary Key Column Value" but it can be entered manually (i.e. p23_AUTO_ID) and it will work fine. You would also need to edit your form so that the auto ID that is being passed from the report is part of the form - but hidden if desired).

  • JDeveloper 10g Creating a new record with trigger sequence primary key

    Hi there, I'm sorry to post this incredibly simple question and I'm sure that someone must have answered this on this forum before but the searching of this site is incredible slow and painful and after 30 mins I can't find help.
    I am using a struts Data Action to create a new record in the database and then being forwarded to an edit page where I can enter the new details. Then when the details are entered I am clicking an update button and returning to a browse screen where I can either commit the change to the database or rollback. Sounds pretty simple but I am really struggling with trying to get the trigger of the number sequence to work properly.
    Ideally I would like to click the create new record button and then the primary key/triggered sequence number is already displayed on the empty form...
    ... but if this is too tricky or not possible then I would like the user to either not enter any value in the key field (which currently causes error - JBO-27014: Attribute PoNo in PO_SYS_MODULE.PoSystemView1 is required) OR the user enters a number and the trigger overwrites this number with the next in the sequence.
    I can enter a new record if I look in the manager console and see the next number in the sequence and then create the record using this number and then click commit twice, as the first time I get the error: JBO-25019: Entity row of key oracle.jbo.Key[154 ] not found in PoSystem. Or if I enter a value 5 times greater than the next in the sequence I have to click the commit button 5 extra times to get the sequence to match the input.
    I hope that this lengthy explanation fills you in on my problem, there must be a simple solution to this and I will be VERY grateful to anyone who can help me.
    Many thanks
    Ben Sayers (clearly a newbie)

    Hi,
    ADF Business Components handles this for you - unless yo prefer doing this manually. In the Entity Object, set the PK attribute's type to DBSequence. Then create a database sequence and use a database trigger to add the sequence value on insert

  • Problem with primary key violation in master-detail screens

    Hi,
    I found a problem/bug in master-detail screens in which the PK of the detail table consist of the PK of the master table and an additional column. E.g. a manually entered sequence 'in parent'.
    I will use the following simple scenario to explain the problem (it's easy to reproduce):
    PROJECT table
    # id (PK)
    * name
    PROJECT REQUIREMENTS table
    # prj_id (PK)
    # sequence_id (PK)
    * description
    Just create the BC EO, VO and AM and set both display properties of the prj_id attribute of the project requirements VO to hidden.
    Create a new screen in the application structure file in which you can select a project (table-form layout) and display the details (table layout) on the same page.
    With this basic setup you can generate the app to enter, update and delete projects and their requirements.
    The problem occurs if you have a project with a least 1 requirements stored in the database and you try to enter a second requirement with an existing sequence_id within the project. This is an use case in which a end-user enters wrong data.
    So assume we have in the database:
    prj_id sequence_id description
    ====== =========== ===========
    1 1 req1
    and the end-user enters (prj_id is entered automatically as it's not displayed):
    1 1 req2 >> user should have enterd sequence_id 2...
    Step 1. If you try to save an error will be displayed:
    JBO-25013: Too many objects match the primary key oracle.jbo.Key[227300 1 ].
    And the sequnece_id is emptied automatically.
    Step 2. So the end-user re-enters the sequence_id but fills in 2 now and saves.
    Another error is displayed: JBO-27014 sequence_id in AppModule is required
    How strange? Everything is filled in already.
    Step 3. If you just hit save again (without changing anything) you got a transaction completed successfully.
    I checked the logfiles and noticed an exception during after executing step 2.

    This also explains why I got a error message within the application at step 2, but not an expected error message!
    From the logfile I can see something is going wrong in the oracle.jbo.server.EntityImpl.validateEntity method.
    To get more insight what was goning on I overridden the validateEntity method in my VO Impl class:
    protected void validateEntity()
    System.out.println("MARCEL>> sequenceId=" + getSequenceId());
    System.out.println("MARCEL>> description=" + getDescription());
    super.validateEntity();
    In step 1 the validateEntity is not called.
    In step 2 the sequeceId = null (and description = reg2)
    I expected the sequeceId to be 2 now as I entered this. Furthermore if I look at the (JhsActionServlet) request parameters in the log, I can see that the value of the sequenceId was 2. I guess something is going wrong at this point in converting the request parametes to the EO.
    In step 3 the sequeceId = 2 (as expected)
    Note that I'm using the evaluation copy version of JHeadstart 10.1.2.
    If this was patched in any later build, could you please tell which changes I have to make to the JHS sources to solve this problem.
    Regards,
    Marcel

    Marcel,
    I cannot reproduce this in version 10.1.2.2. We did not "fix" this, although changes in the runtime might have fixed this "silently". I suggest you upgrade to 10.1.2.2 and see whether you still get the error.

  • Primary Key in tabular form is not a number

    I created a table called tblRegions.
    The primary key is RegionCode(VarChar2) - example - USA.
    I then tried to create an updateable Tabular Form using tblRegions, but it won't let me choose the primary key as an updateable field.

    O.K.
    1. create a trigger which will populate a real primary key out of a sequence - search internet
    on triggers and sequences in oracle
    2. use this primary key for tabular form processing
    3. if you need a manually entered pseudo (fake) primary key, you can handle this column
    as any other - tabular form will not complain about it
    4. you may create a constraint on your table, which will take care this column is allways
    populated and unique - this is not the nicest way since it involves processing and the errors
    you gat may not look user friendly. However, this is the most secure and easiest way -
    you don't need to write any code on the application side to handle eventual errors.
    Search internet on constraints.
    5. you may decide to create a manual validation process to fetch the eventual errors
    before you commit the changes to the database. This forum is full of the threads on
    the topic "tabular form" and "manual creation of tabular forms". If you are new to apex,
    you should stay away from that for the first (this is only my opinion).

  • Primary Key on Entity Object

    Hello
    I create an entity object based on a view manually (not via the wizard)BC$J. I choose a primary key to complete the operation. I created a UIX page which display 5 records at a time. It turned out that the Primary key a chose was not a primary key and the page displayed with an error indicating that there are duplicate matches. Does this mean that the BC4J is checking the entire table for duplication? In my Page, i was about to invoke the search page as the first page to force the user to enter a criteria which when entered will cause only one record to be retrieved. BC4J seems to be executing the query and checking for the duplication before even allowing the search page to appear. The Search page is the first page that appears in my application (managed to skip forcing the initial table to be rendered with rows)
    Is there a way to stop OC4J from executing and checking before i display the Search Page.
    Thanks
    Ammar

    BC4J do not check the entire table for duplication. We retrieve rows as requested by the client app and if a duplicate PK is found as rows are retrieved, we will throw an exception.
    Thanks.
