Manually update the IPOD?

Is there any way that I can manually download the latest software update for the iPod? I have a 5th generation iPod video and iTunes 7.0.1.8 will not run the iPod update.
It says it cannot connect to the internet. However, itunes and my internet works fine (except for this). I have windows firewall disabled, and I even disconnected my router and plugged my cable modem directly into my computer to ensure nothing was being filtered / blocked.
I do not have any anti virus installed, and I am sure nothing is blocking the connection. I even tried to update my ipod using my laptop with no luck.
I don't know if maybe my ISP is blocking access or something? I have purchased some music / audiobooks and I cannot move them to my ipod because it wants me to update the softare ..
any help is greatly appreciated.

my friend had this same problem and sent me a fix ..
here is what i did
this is from anothe rpost on the topic. It worked on my PC
1.) Open Internet Explorer (6.x or 7.0 Beta 3)
2.) Click on Tools -> Internet Options
3.) Click on the Connections Tab
4.) Click on the LAN Settings button
5.) Check Automatically Detect Settings
6.) Click on OK -> OK
7.) Reload iTunes
8.) Update
(firefox is even set as my default browser, but i still had to do this)
all seems to be working now. sorry ...

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes.

You need iTunes 10.7 or later on the computer. If you have a Mac that requires a Mac with an Intel pocesser and OSX 10.6.8 or later.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable to figure out why. It did not used to do this. I can't figure out any pattern to the songs it does it on versus that it doesn't do it on. Some of the songs are purchased, some are imported, etc. We are running Windows 7.

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

The later iOSs requires at least OSX 10.5.8 for the Mac.  You need iTunes 10.5 but 10.4.11 only goes to 9.x.. 10.5.8 is a paid upgrade.
Are you sure that you have a 3G iPod?  If it is 8 or 16 GB it is a 2G and those can only go to 4.2.1 (also requires 10.5.8 or later). A 32 GB can be either  2G or 3G. To identify yours:

Is this particular car stereo stated as being compatible with your iPod Mini?  If you aren't sure, check the manufacturer's support site or give the car stereo manufacturer a call.

  • Is it safe to update the iPod?

iTunes is telling me to update the iPod. Is it safe?

    Marisa,
First off, you'll probably get varying replies as for opinions in this matter, of course, but here's mine, which isn't exactly on one side or the other.
Generally speaking, 1.2.1 is a fairly safe update, and it tends to solve more problems than it does make new ones, as I've seen.
This 1.2.1 update, though, was basically for the bugs and errors in the previous 1.2 firmware, which certainly brought on new issues, so 1.2.1 would be good for users with 1.2 problems.
If you've been running on 1.2 all this time and iTunes wants you to upgrade to 1.2.1, you're iPod will most likely do just fine, since it doesn't seem that 1.2.1 has any new problems that 1.2 didn't already have.
If you've been running on 1.1.2 all this time, though (without issues), you have a higher chance at getting new issues with 1.2.1, which would mostly just be some remaining bugs from 1.2 that the latest upgrade didn't fix.
The way I look at it is, if you haven't been having any issues with the iPod on the 1.1.2 firmware, though, it might be better to go ahead and not update to this latest 1.2.1, since there wouldn't exactly be a reason, bug-wise, to upgrade the iPod to this latest firmware.
We're probably seeing only just a tiny portion of iPod owners on the Discussions with this latest update, though, so it is most likely not a commonly problematic upgrade in that sense at all, although from 1.1.2 to 1.2.1 could bring on problems that 1.2 already simply had.
I hope all that made sense.
    Good luck!

If your iPod touch is already running iOS 5 then you should be able to upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 on the device with a Wi-Fi connection.

To answer the post title FireFox save all downloads automatically in the download folder, which you can find in the Documents folder. If you want to choose where to save your downloads go to tools>options>check always ask me where to save files.
Secondly, I am assuming you have IE 8 installed as this is the only version that supports this fix that is currently not in beta. Go to control panel>internet options>advanced tab and reset the settings at the bottom. This may or may not fix the problem but it is a good first step.
