Map a SAN LUN to a WS2012 R2 virtual machine

Hello,
I need some help from someone who has dealt with this before.
I have:
an HP DL380 G6 running the unlimited eval copy of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.
an HP MSA 2040 SAN enclosure.
a WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine running on the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host.
an HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e host adapter.
I've been asked to configure the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine as a file server, but really the data will be on an MSA 2040 SAN enclosure volume, so I need to map an LUN from the MSA 2040 to the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine.
Of course I can't actually install the HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e host adapter into the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine, but is there an emulation/software solution for this?
If I install the physical HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e host adapter into the physical Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host, will I be able to add a virtual version of said host adapter to my VM?
I'm searching and reading posts now, but if someone, who knows, has the answer, I would really appreciate a pointer or two.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
SOLVED!
Hello Elton_Ji/Darshana Jayathilake
And thanks for trying to help, but please stop repeating disinformation.
It CAN be done; I did it last week with the specific hardware/software listed.
Domain Environment - Server 2003 AD with DFL/FFL set to Windows Server 2003.
1 - HP DL308 G6 running the unlimited eval of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (core).
1 - member server (desktop class hardware) running WS2012 R2 Std. (used for remote mgmt.).
(there are 5/6 netsh advfirewall firewall commands that need to be run in order to use the computer
mgmt. console on a WS2012 R2 Std box to manage the Hyper-V Server core install; look 'em up.).
1 - HP MSA 2040 Enclosure with Dual Controllers - purchased in the last two months; no firmware changes
have been made.
1 - HP/LSI SAS 9207-8e HBA - purchased in the last two months.
2 - SFF-8644 to SFF-8088 SAS HBA connector cables - purchased in the last two months.
Two SAN volumes were successfully mapped to the phys. SAS 9207-8e HBA in the Hyper-V Server using the
dual ctrlr connection scenario per the MSA2040 UserGuide. p.36
http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03792322
one server/one hba/dual path
connection from ctrlr A sas port A1
connection from ctrlr B sas port B1
all other ports on both ctrlrs were deselected
ctrlr A connected to right hand port interface on phys sas card in Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (core).
ctrlr B connected to left hand port interface on phys sas card in Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (core).
link led was green on both ctrlrs; activity led was off on both ctrlrs
applied the settings: "The host mapping was modified successfully. Note: It may take a minute to update
table.
i didn't have to choose another lun while cfging ctrlr B; lun 1 is still set.
The file server VM is OFF!
the File Server VM's settings > SCSI ctrlr > Hard Drive settings DID change; the "physical disk option"
was NOW available with
disk 1 1115.72 GB bus 0 lun 1 target 1
and
disk 2 1117.11 GB bus 0 lun 2 target 2
a rescan disks in disk mgmt. on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (core) did not show any new drives yet; that's
OK, you won't see them there.
I selected scsi disk 1 in the File Server VM's settings > scsi ctrlr > hard drive > physical disk
option, and did likewise with the second scsi hard drive phy. disk 2.
Then I started the File Server VM, and logged in > opened the computer mgmt. console > disk mgmt. >
EUREKA! > there were two, new, unknown/offline/unallocated disks.
The properties of both offline disks identified them as an "HP MSA 2040 SAS SCSI Disk Device"
the offline disk info ballon reads "offline (the disk is offline because of policy set by an
administrator)
Disk 1 was set to online and initialized as GPT (went with GPT due to size/plans for future growth).
I created a simple volume partition and formatted it as ntfs (1115.6 GB)
new simple volume > used all available space (1142370 MB) > drive letter E > format partition > file
system = ntfs > allocation unit size = default > volume label = DATA > perform quick format deselected.
the activity led on ctrlr A was now green and blinking.
1:38 PM on 4/2/15 1%
2:03 PM 22 %
2:22 PM 37%
3:40 PM done
I opened a unc window to \\VirtualFileServer\e$, pasted a text file and deleted it.
I'm domain admin, so I was able to open the window without sharing or setting ntfs permissions.
fantástico!

Hi Sir,
>>so I need to map an LUN from the MSA 2040 to the WS2012 R2 Std. x64 virtual machine.
Please ensure NPIV is enabled on HBA and SAN switch .
"Virtual Fibre Channel support in Windows Server 2012 leverages Fibre Channel HBAs and switches that are compatible with N_Port ID Virtualization (
NPIV ).  NPIV is leveraged by Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and the FREE Hyper-V Server 2012 to define virtualized World Wide Node Names (
WWNNs ) and World Wide Port Names (
WWPNs ) that can be assigned to virtual Fibre Channel HBAs within the settings of each VM.  These virtualized World Wide Names can then be zoned into the storage and masked into
the LUNs that should be presented to each clustered Virtual Machine."

  • Oracle VM 3.1.1: Using iSCSI LUN's as Device-Backed Virtual Machine Disks?

Will Oracle VM Manager 3.1.1 support the use of iSCSI LUN's as device-backed virtual machine disks? i.e., Can iSCSI LUN's be treated like directly-attached storage (DAS) and used as virtual machine disks?

I don't personally use ISCSI. BUT, I don't see why you can't create physical pass through attachments to virtual guests using ISCSI LUNS. It is no different than FC or direct attach storage. Worst case scenerio... you can create a repo on the ISCSI LUN and then create virtual disks.
Oracle VM Getting Started Guide for Release 3.1.1Chapter 7. Create a Storage Repository
A storage repository is where Oracle VM resources may reside... Resources include virtual machines, templates for virtual machine creation, virtual machine assemblies, ISO files (DVD image files), shared virtual disks, and so on. This would have the effect of using file-backed virtual machine disks but at least they'd be centrally-located on shared storage (and, therefore, the virtual machine could run as an HA guest)

I have kicked this idea around as well, but I decided do it slightly different, by providing the storage repo via multipathed iSCSI and use iSCSI within my guests if needed for better speed or lower disk latency.
If you want to use iSCSI as the virtual devices for your guests in a clustered server pool, you'd have to grant access to all of your iSCSI targets to any VM server and I was not feeling comfortable with that. I rather grant only the guest directly access to "its" iSCSI target. So I will keep all of my guests system images on the clustered server pool - and additionally also the virtual disks that don't need a high performance and have the really heavy-duty vdisks as separate iSCSI targets. That seems logical, Budy:
    <ul>
    <li>Use a multipathed iSCSI repository for hosting the virtual machine's disk image, and then;
<li>Utilize iSCSI LUN's for "more performant" parts of the guest's file system (e.g., /var).
    </ul>
I'm still puzzled about that image, though. +i.e., the fourth image from the bottom of Chapter 7.7, "Creating a Virtual Machine" ("To add a physical disk:...") where it's clear that the exising "physical" disks are actually iSCSI LUN's that are attached to the OVM server.+
I suppose that I'll have to configure some iSCSI LUN's and try it out to be certain. Just another tool that I don't have +but will need to add to my toolbox+.

  • How do I map Hitachi SAN LUNs to Solaris 10 and Oracle 10g ASM?

    Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
    My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
    Thanks for your help!

Yes that is correct however due to use of Solaris 10 MPxIO multipathing software that we are using with the Hitachi SAN it does present an extra layer of complexity and issues with ASM configuration. Which means that ASM may get confused when it attempts to find the new LUNs from the Hitachi SAN at the Solaris OS level. Oracle Metalink note 396015.1 states this issue.
So my question is this: how to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter asm_diskstring to recognize the new Hitachi LUNs presented to the Solaris 10 host?
Lets say that I have the following new LUNs:
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d1s6
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d2s6
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d3s6
    /dev/rdsk/c7t1d4s6
Would I set the ASM initialization parameter for asm_diskstring to /dev/rdsk/c7t1d*s6
as correct setting so that the ASM instance recognizes my new Hitachi LUNs? Solaris needs to map these LUNs using pseudo devices in the Solaris OS for ASM to recognize the new disks.
How would I set this up in Solaris 10 with Sun multipathing (MPxIO) and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I want to get this right to avoid the dreaded ORA-15072 errors when creating a diskgroup with external redundancy for the Oracle 10g RAC ASM installation process.

  • High Available virtual machines-SAN storage availability

    Hi,
Considering that we have the following scenarios:
    1) High available virtual machines
2)Storage presented through a virtual SAN switch connection.
The question that I have for you is the following:
How will the SAN storage be available to the virtual machines in:
    a) Life-migration scenarios?
    b)Physical server failure?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    a) from Technet:
You must have access to any virtual SANs that are being used by the virtual machine. In addition, the virtual SAN connectivity must have the same number of ports on the SAN to expose the LUNs"
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn551169.aspx#BKMK_Step1
    b) A classcial Failover will occur and all cluster resources will be moved to another cluster node depending on your configured Failover Cluster rules

  • HP SAN LUN not appearing in format command after applying 10-Recommended

We applied the 10-Recommended from March 18 and now the HP SAN LUNs are not appearing in the format command and when we cd to the mount points and run ls or ls -l no files are returned. We have verified that the LUNs are being presented by the HP SAN to the system as they were before applying the patch cluster. This is on an E-2900 with QLogic HBAs.

Do the LUNs show up under "fcinfo", like the following example?

  • Oracle VM and multiple SAN LUNS

    Hi,
now i have got another question.
On my OVM Cluster with 2 Servers and SAN LUNS.
I have created my root repository with ocfs2.
    Ist is mounted to /OVS/xxx
Now i like to have some more SAN LUNS connetd to my both servers.
What is the best practice? Wher should i mount them (and how? fstab?)
And how do i locate the Guests on it? (cant find where to choose the repo in the OVS Gui?)
    Thanks
    Here are some more infos:
    /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -l

And after that it should get mounted (not under OVS though... the path was something like /opt/ovs-repositories/mount/ID or something). Sorry can't check atm.It gets mounted in /var/ovs/mount/UUID

  • SAN Transfer - Virtual Machine resides on a LUN, which is not visible to any of the storage providers._

    Hi,
i'm trying to migrate a vm from a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host with VMM 2012 R2 using SAN Transfer. We use a Fujitsu Eternus DX60 Storage Unit. The Fujitsu VDS HW Provider is installed on
the VM that hosts VMM 2012 R2 and is configured to connect to the storage.
The Migration wizard Shows the following info in the "Deployment and Transfer Explanation" and only allows LAN Transfer:
Virtual Machine XXX resides on a LUN, which is not visible to any of the storage providers.
    I know that i have done this successfully before i upgraded to VMM2012 R2 using VMM2008R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2.
I'm very thankful for any ideas on how to enable SAN Transfer.
    Thanks in advance!
    Timo

So, I fixed it - Kinda...
I had to remove the SMI-S provider to my SAN (Again). Ensure I put a valid and signed CA Cert for the SMI-S provider (5989 = SSL 5988 no_ssl) in a PEM format (Base 64).
I then added this to the storage providers section along with a storage classification.
Now, when I run the 'Store in Library' option again and now even though I get the same error - The next button isn't greyed out and the migration works!?!
    Weird, yes, workable, yes....

  • Memory Mapping on a Virtual Machine

I have an application that memory maps a number of files. Occasionally it needs to unmap them so that they can be updated. On a real machine this process works flawlessly but I have two installs that are on virtual machines. On the virtual machine installs the unmapping occasionally seems to either fail or at least take a long time. When I come to update the file I get the "The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open" error message.
The failure is fairly random, sometimes the update process works sometimes is fails and it doesn't consistently fail on the same mapped file which is why I think it's something to do with the timing of the unmapping and the virtual machine environment. Both virtual machine installs are running on Windows 2003 Server.
Has anyone else seen this? I'm going to try inserting a pause between the unmapping and the update but that feels like a hack, I'd rather a call back to tell me the unmapping is complete but I don't suppose that's possible.

    the_doozer wrote:
Ok, I'll grant you there is no way to explicitly unmap a mapped file in Java (a huge failing of the file mapping system IMHO) but closing any open FileChannel and nulling out the MappedByteBuffer is, in my experience, normally enough to cause the OS to unmap the file. This system lets me update files quite happily on all but the virtual machine system.I think you've been lucky in that case. I had some test cases that consistently failed since I couldn't delete the memory mapped file that I previously had created.

  • Is there a way to see SAN luns from the UCS fabric interconnect.

                       Hello,
    I have recently added a 3rd and 4th vHBA to a B440 running RHEL5.
Originally I had 2 vHBAs', and each created a path to 172 luns. (I was multipathed to 172 luns)
Now I have added two additional vHBA's and my SAN admin assures me he has mapped, zoned and masked all 172 luns to the 2 new vHBA's.
    So, at this time I should have 4 paths to 172 luns....but I don't.
What I see is 4 paths to 71 luns.
I still see 2 paths to all 172 luns, but only see 4 paths on 71 of them.
Its almost like my SAN admin either mapped or masked only 71 of the 172 luns to my 3rd and 4th path.
Via the RHEL5 OS I have rescaned the FC paths, rebooted, done lsscsi, looked in the lowest level places for what devices are present on my FC channels, always I see 172 devices on the 2 original FC paths and 71 devices on the 2 new FC paths.
My question is....is there a way to see all devices (luns) accociated with an vHBA from the command line in the Fabric Interconnect?
My configuration is UCS w 2 FI's, using 8Gb FC connections to Cisco 9500 directors, to an EMC DMX4.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gene

    wdey,
The link you supplied in your response is the answer.
You can look at the devices on the FC boot paths, but not while the OS is running.
I have a test server I could reeboot to try what you have in your document, and it does work.
Too bad Cisco could not create a linux util rpm that would allow looking down the fabric while running. Im quit sure emulex has this kind of util, called HBAanywhere...at least for solaris.
In any case, thanks for the link to your article, it was VERY good!
My problem with seeing a shorter list of luns on 2 of my FC paths may get solved this afternoon by a change my SAN admin is going to make.. If it does I will post the fix.

  • UCS SAN LUN access problem

    Hi All
i have UCS manger 4.3q, 2xFI 6140 and connected to Cisco MDS 9509 v4.2( 4 FC link from FIA to MDS A, and 4 FC uplink from FIB to MDS B) and connected to SUN SAN storagetek 6140(one FC port to MDS A from SP1 and one FC port to MDS B from SP2), i created service profile with 2 VHBA for FIA and FIB (with different VSAN), after that we installed ESXi 4.1 on local disk but when we tried to brows LUN created on SAN we can not.
from both FI we can see WWPn:WWPN for each VHBA in created server, from MDS also i can see floggi output for SAN (WWN,WWPN) as target and Server VhBA as initiater.
i make all possible isolation even i disbaled FC of FI B, and till now we can not access LUN on  SAN, as per SAN admin LUNS created and mapped correctly, so appreciate your support to solve this.
    Many thanks.

    Hi
From your statement, I understand that you are using SUN SAN storagetek as disk array storage. Cisco does not list the SUN SN storagetek in their interoperablity matix and this could be one of the reason. Pleas go through the link below.

  • How to "boot from SAN" from a LUN which belongs to other solaris Machine.

    Hi all
I have installed solaris on a lun ( boot from SAN).
Then i had assigned the same os lun to another machine ( the hardware is exactly the same) but now the new machine had detected the os but it reboots and kicksoff.
I have tried changing vfstab setting,
    can someone help me??
    Thanks in advance.
    sidd.

disable IDE RAID and ensure SATA is enabled in BIOS
disconnect any other IDE HDDs before you install Windows to your SATA drive; they can be reconnected again afterwards.
make sure that the SATA drive is listed first in 'Hard Disk Priority' under 'Boot Order' in BIOS

  • SAN LUN alignment offset

    Hello,
I am connecting a solaris 10 5/08 to an EMC clariion FC based SAN. LUNs are discovered fine and can be mounted normally.
According to EMC, x86 based systems put some system data at the beginning of each LUN and this causes stripe crossing if not treated by having an alignment offset properly configured.
On Windows servers, I run the diskpart command, select the disk and then "create partition primary align=64" and this does the job.
I am looking for a way to do the same with Solaris x86 and had no luck contacting EMC, as their documentation seem to talk about Solaris on SPARC only.
    Any help appreciated.

It depends. For instance if you're using recent versions of ZFS, when given the whole lun it will leave space at the beginning such that the data really does lie on a 128K boundary for the lun. No offset is necessary.
If you're using VTOC labels and UFS, then I imagine that the offset would be a problem, but I haven't seen a description that accurately describes what the offset is.

  • Connect SAN LUN to Server

I am very new to linux (coming from HP-UX) and am tasked with setting up a linux/oracle/rac environment. I have installed OEL 5.1 on three HP DL360 servers. I am pretty much 'running blindly' and am looking for a source of information to help me keep going.
We have a cx3-40c Clariion and am connected to it through dual HBA ports. I am using Navishpere agent and PowerPath. The server sees the Clariion SP's (LUNZ), in the /proc/scsi/scsi file.
The storage admin has presented a 100gb lun to the server. It is here I have run into several obstacles.
I want to use lvm to create one volume group of this 100gb lun, create 2 logical volumes (10gb and 90gb) and put an ext3 filesystem on them. I have worked several paths, the lvm gui and command line. I was able to create the vg and lv's but the mke2fs failed with a superblock warning.
I think my issue may be at the beginning...so I want to start from scratch and a freshly presented lun. The storage admin has 'un-presented' the lun. So at this point PowerPath shows no logical devices, fdisk -l shows only my internal system drives...but /proc/partitions is still showing the sd* devices. I did a partprobe but no change. And the confusion begins....
Any, configuration documents or checklists out there?
    Thanks.

    1. once the slices are given out from the SAN, look what you've got on your linux server:
    fdisk -l
    2. If you've got redundant path's, use multipathd to make a meta device for each slice. if that's the case, please post a reply, I can help you further
at this point you should have devices on linux representing the SAN slices.
    next:
-make a pv of the devices (pvcreate /path/to/device)
-make a volume group and add the pv
    -make logical volumes
(the linux LVM commands are very much alike the HPUX lvm commands)
after the lv's are made, put a filesystem onto the lv's (mkfs.ext3 /dev/<vgname>/<lvname>

And after that it should get mounted (not under OVS though... the path was something like /opt/ovs-repositories/mount/ID or something). Sorry can't check atm.It gets mounted in /var/ovs/mount/UUID
