Master Filenames

The master filenames on my image imports from my Nikon D70 into Aperture have suddenly changed in format from DSC_#### to _DSC####. The underscore is now leading the filename instead of linking the prefix to the sequence number. I'm not sure how to fix this. Has anyone experienced this or a similar situation? Thanks for your input!

Have you changed the default colour profile in your camera? I can't remember the details (look in your manual under profiles - or something like that). If the camera is set to, I think, sRGB, it'll prefix the underscore.

  • Thumbnails & Preview filenames do not match Master filename

Hi - can't find any threads regarding this...
Basic problem is that Aperture is not renaming the Preview & Thumbnail filenames when it renames images on import - anyone else experiencing this problem?
I have a managed Aperture Library (2.1.3). I rename my image files on import using the Import dialogue set to Custom Name & Counter and Apply to Master filename checked. However the Preview file, the Thumbnail file and the Finder folder holding the images do not get renamed.
Since the Media Browser uses the Preview files rather than the Master files when importing images into other apps (eg. Pages or uploading to a blog) the files used all have the wrong names.
    For Instance:
I have a canon image file named IMG1234.JPG.
I import this file to Aperture and use the import dialogue to rename to Custom Name SUNSETNEVADA.JPG (with apply to Master Filename checked).
In Aperture what I see in my project is SUNSETNEVADA.JPG as the Version Name and the Master filename - as expected.
However the Thumbnail & Preview files are still called IMG1234.JPG - you can't see this directly from within Aperture you need to open Finder and drill down thru the Library package where you find that your Master file is called SUNSETNEVADA.JPG but it lives in a folder called IMG1234.JPG with a Thumbnail file called IMG1234.JPG and a Preview file called IMG1234.JPG.
I then open Pages and open the Media Browser.
I select Photos, and then my Aperture library, find my project and select SUNSETNEVADA.JPG.
The file that gets imported into Pages is the preview file called IMG1234.JPG.
The same happens in any situation where I use the Media Browser to browse the Apertuer library and import images, because the Media Browser always uses the Preview file.
The only work around I have is to export images directly from Aperture and then browse the Finder to import them to other apps - avoiding the Media Browser and Preview files altogether.
I have notified Apple Pro Support who claimed to be unaware of this error.
If you have seen the same problem please notify Apple Support.
Any thoughts or solutions welcome. Thanks

I am seeing the same thing, as I have lost all my masters and can only get my pics by copying preview files, which all have the old names.

  • Changing Master Filename, v1.5

Is the new option to change the master filename only available on import? I can't seem to find a command to do it once images are within Aperture (library or referenced).
I usually import images from an assignment. Edit them and then batch rename so that the client gets a coherently named group of images with no gaps. If the actual renaming of the master filenames is only upon import then it would be less useful since the edit is not done at that point.
Also, when I move select images to the external editor I'd like to retain the same file name not revert to a different file name which is what happens when the version name and the master filename differ.

  • Just To Be Clear, Filename is the Master file name

Aperture has a Version Name field and a File Name field.
    But, no Master Name field.
That's because the Master Name is the File Name.
    Correct?

I was very confused by things like this, but have come to terms ( ) with most of Aperture's nomenclature.
In this case I think it's mostly simple elision.  The full term should perhaps be "Master file name".  "Master" is useful, because while all Masters are files, not all files are Masters.  By the same token, "file" is redundant, and in use is regularly dropped.
Your question seems to be, then, "Why is the label 'File name' used on the Metadata tab of the Inspector instead of 'Master name'?"
I (of course) don't know.  The interface designers might have avoided some confusion by using "Master file name" -- but that might have made things worse: is that the name of the "Master file", or is it some kind of master "file name"?  (The User Manual makes things even worse: one finds "Master file name", "Master name", "file name" and "Master filename".)  Ultimately, I suspect the decisions were made based on the likely frame of reference.  If the frame of reference is inside Aperture, "Master" is emphasized.  If the frame of reference is outside Aperture, "file" is emphasized.
Would you be more comfortable with this label on the Metadata tab of the Inspector:  "Master file"?

  • Renaming Actual Master Files?

In the What's New section it states the following...
Rename actual master files and assign version names within Aperture using the improved File-Renaming tools.<<</div>
As far as I can tell this is only half true.
If you relocate the master files out of the library and tell it to use the new Version name it will rename the file, but inside of Aperture it still uses the original file name (MG0001) as the "File Name". If you consoldate the master files back in they get changed back to the original file name again.
In the batch rename you cannot rename the original file, just the versions.
Unless I'm missing something there is no way to really rename the originals and have Aperture update its internal DB. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a post tied into this same question -
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=668589&tstart=0
"Is the new option to change the master filename only available on import? I can't seem to find a command to do it once images are within Aperture (library or referenced).

As you say, Aperture needs a way to update it's internal DB so that the renamed master file name is used.

  • Database Inconsistency Nightmare

As an avid user and supporter of Aperture since it's release, I now have an new issue. I am a pro photojournalist using Aperture every day for all my magazine assignment work and I feel like I know the program very well after 2+ years of heavy daily use.
I have never had any serious problems with the program at all, until one week ago.
The problems started when I launched aperture and got a database inconsistency dialog box. I was not too worried as I have had this once or twice in the past and I just relaunched the app with apple and option keys down and rebuilt the database. Everything seemed ok but then I noticed that 2,400 of my 12,000 referenced images were tagged as missing. I thought this was strange, and I used "Manage Referenced Files" to see what was going on and reconnect the missing files. I also noticed that 2 subjects had a second version not in a stack that contained the thumbnail for each image without metadata, while the normal version and stack with metadata had no thumbnail! On my FireWire drive 1 which holds a first copy of all referenced files in my library, each subject has a corresponding folder and I started to reconnect the offline and missing files. For most of the subjects everything went fine, but then there were 4 subjects where I encountered very unexpected problems. Firstly the names of the Master images for some subjects had been changed more that one year earlier, but the reconnect dialog box showed the original filename from the camera as the master filename. It did not want to "Reconnect All" so the only way is one by one!
Then I notice that the smart folders set to show "Offline" and "Missing" masters are inaccurate for some reason.
I even have a few "Managed" masters that will not export because the dialog box comes up to tell me that the image is "Offline" or "Unavailable". What? Ok so at this point I decide that since I have everything backed up on two separate Firewire drives and a server in California, that it may just be cleaner to reinstall Aperture and revert to a recent Vault. I did this and guess what, same problems plus a few more headaches reconnecting masters!
The biggest problem at this point is that for two subjects, the captions and adjustments are in a version that has no thumbnail, shows the "Missing" tag in the Metadata panel listing the original filename from the camera as the Master Filename, while there is a new mysterious version 2 which has a thumbnail, no caption, the offline tag and and shows the correct Master Filename. If I reconnect the masters for these images it still shows as missing for the normal version which has the captions, keywords and adjustments.
At this point I have decided that for two of the subjects One is Versailles 600 images and the other Cyprus 700 images, that I will probably end up having to just reimport these two subjects and manually move the caption for each image.
This is all starting to make me call into question the stability of this type of system for archiving large amounts of images. True that with all the backups and the normal robustness of Aperture you should not loose images. But if the Masters get unlinked in a corrupt way from the database you CAN loose a large part of your post processing work. And the worst seams to be that this can happen even if you DO know what you are doing.
This does not at all mean I am going to stop using Aperture, but it does make me feel a little more weary from an archival standpoint about keeping all metadata and adjustments separate from master images.

Thanks for all your replies. And yes the Project container is a fantastic way to back things up. It is especially useful for moving a project from one Library to another without risk of overwriting files.
Naturally if I could get my corrupt projects in order I would export the projects, including the masters and then reimport them. But Aperture is not going to let me do that with these corrupt Projects, as the masters are not be properly linked. I have tried everything I could think of.
There are still some really weird things going on with the database in my library. One really strange thing is that some referenced images that DO have the master linked and show the normal reference tag, but will not Consolidate as the dialog comes up "The selection does not contain any referenced files".
But then for the same image you can choose "Show in finder" and it goes straight to the master on it's external drive! How strange is that. For that matter it will also not "Relocate Master" for the image because it says that the master is "Offline or cannot be found". OK then here comes the weirdest part: It will export the image without a hitch! Managed referenced files shows these images as connected and black.
Then the other really bad thing is that some of the managed images will not export or relocate as the dialog comes up "Offline or cannot be found". I have rebuilt the library and everything else to no avail.
The thing that bothers me about this is that if this can happen to me, who spends untold hours on Aperture and on the computer in general and I believe I do know quite a lot about the program, what is going to happen to the many photographers who do not fully grasp the abstract file management of Aperture?
Maybe it is more stable to run your Library as Managed, but for working photographers who are usually laptop users it is almost essential to keep the masters on an external Ruggged drive. If you put the Library on the external drive the performance which is already sometimes sluggish when you need to work very quickly (even with the most powerful MacBook Pro) becomes too beach ball when on an external drive.
In any event I think that if I can ever get my Library back in order, in addition to the many backups of masters and vaults, I am going to export each project including masters and back that up too on a regular basis. Seems like a lot of work backing up to maintain the integrity of a database!
    Cheers

  • Exporting Versions without Version # included in name

    Hi all,
I am trialing 1.5 and would like to upload lores Jpegs of a single version of each of my master files to Photoshelter.
Everything works well except that I don't want to include the version # in the file name.
I have renamed the files from the original camera generated filename and when I choose Master Filename in the naming presets it reverts back to the original camera filename.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for your comments Pierre, I was hoping to use the time savings available by uploading to Photoshelter directly from Aperture.
The last sentence referred to file names that are changed once they are in Aperture seem to revert back to the original (camera generated name) when Master File name is chosen in the naming presets.
    cheers

    Excellent stuff!
I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
They are stored as binary data in the Version XML files at the bottom level of the Library package. You can also have a look around in the ZRKIMAGEADJUSTMENT table, but again the actual settings for each adjustment are in binary form.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so.
As far as I can remember, Aperture uses the 'proper' IPTC tag names when accessing them via AppleScript, so you may be able to do a loop through all the IPTC tags for each image, rather than picking out each specific one. But that would need checking. The EXIFTools site is a good place to find out about the different ways that IPTC data can be described.
Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.
Don't rush unless you feel like it - I've already started planning out a free (as in beer and speech) XMP importer with a GUI so that you can choose how to map the XMP CORE tags that don't exist in Aperture. You've given me an extra idea, though - if we can decide on a set of custom tags, my importer could map the XMP CORE tags to them and your exporter could export those tags.
    Thanks for the work!
    Ian
P.S. I'll check through your script tomorrow, some of the database tables changed between 1.5.6 and 2.0, so you might need to add in a version check to be really thorough.

I have two different Sony Cameras and Apperture has allowed me to import photos from both without a problem however after changing to 1.5 it will not allow me to back them up to an external drive because the drive thinks that the other one is open and that it is duplicated. For example the file name DSC2134 has been saved at different times with different cameras but if I try to back up to my exyternal drive it just hangs up my entire computer. I thought the backup was slow but after 24 hours it still had not moved and would not even allow me to force quit. I had to turn my mac off. If I move each photo one by one it will say that my second photo is a duplicate - even if I have renamed the second version. How do I batch rename? How do I rebuild my library?
I moved to Apperture to get out of all the problems with iphoto now I seem to be back at the begining.

    Rhian,
Aperture stores everything in its index table with a master filename as a key. This key may be the incoming filename or a user designated name.
Images are imported into a Project, and OSX naming conventions demand that within a folder, names are unique. However, OS X allows multiple occurences of the same name in different folders. And so does Aperture.
When you exported, it sounds like you exported the dups to the same folder? It sounds like Aperture should have identified this error condition and presented a dialog box to ignore/replace .... obviously it didn't and I suggest that is a program defect.
To remove dups., sort on filename or date/time stamp and delete the offending image.
BTW, with multiple cameras available to us, it is quite reasonable to expect two distinctly unique images with the same name. Duplicating the name is not necessarily duplicating the image. So I am for Aperture allowing dups. - providing it also allows me to rename, which it does. At the image level, true dups. should show up at the date/time stamp level. That's why sorting on date/time is a useful tool.

  • Best way to move Ap library and masters to a new HD

    Hello,
I currently have my library on a 500GB HD on my mac pro. Since free space is running out I purchased a 1TB internal drive. Now I want to move everything to this new drive (library and masters).
By copying all the masters and the library to the new location and pointing to it in the general preference of aperture would work but copying just will take too long.
Is there a better way to do that?

If you are moving masters, that sounds like you have referenced master files.
    1) Backup your Aperture Library if you can; don’t delete it and your original referenced masters until the last step, if ever!
    2) Use Aperture -> File -> Relocate Masters so Aperture makes all the connections to the new location itself:
To move masters for referenced images to a new location
In the Browser, select the referenced images whose masters you want to move.
    Choose File > Relocate Masters.
Choose a folder location in the dialog that appears.
Choose None from the Subfolders pop-up menu to specify that the files be stored as separate, individual files in the selected folder. You can also specify that Aperture create a hierarchy of subfolders with specific folder names to store your files. For more information about creating folders to hold your imported image files, see Importing Masters for Referenced Images into Folders.
Choose a naming convention from the Name Format pop-up menu to specify how you want the masters named.
For example, choose Master Filename from the Version Name pop-up menu to have your files stored using the current master filenames from your camera or card. Choose a name format from the Version Name pop-up menu to have your masters stored using a specified name. If you choose a custom name format, enter the name you want in the Name Text field. For more information about naming files, see Automatically Naming Your Imported Images.
    Click Relocate Masters.
    3) As for the Aperture Library now updated with the new locations for the referenced masters, you can certainly simply copy your Aperture Library to the internal drive.
    4) Then drag that internal drive library icon over your Aperture program icon in the dock, and you’ll launch the program with everything taken care of on the new location and the new library.
    5) Once confident everything worked properly (maybe in a few months unless you need the disk space sooner), delete or archive your original referenced masters and original Aperture Library.

  • Mass import from iphoto to Aperture?

Ever since I got Aperture 2 at Xmas I have been transferring my old iphoto library to Aperture, My method is I go into my old iphoto library on my external HD which is arranged by date, and I manually select all of my Raw files from a particular file, and then I copy that onto a folder on the desk top. From there I just import the folder into a new project in Aperture which I name whatever the date of that batch is. I have a lot of pictures so this is very time consuming. Is there not a way that I can import the whole library at once and Aperture could just automatically put them into projects for me arranged and named according to date?

Yes and No and then yes again.
In aperture you choose file, import, iphoto library.
Then choose a file renaming preset (or make a new one) and select the 'change master filename' checkbox.
Aperture will import your entire library and rename your files. However the structure that Aperture uses is an iphoto folder with projects arranged by iphoto event within it.
This may or may not be what you want. If it's not the easiet thing to do is to set up a series of smart folders that apply to your that iphoto folder and are sorted by date range or whatever you prefer.
Then create a new project and drag those photos from the smart folder into the new project.
    Repeat per category of photo.
    Hope this helps.

  • Aperture file renaming

    Hello,
I write this with an increasing level of frustration. I run projects in Aperture that require several shoots, or in the case of my image library, continuous shoots.
How do I rename files so that it picks up the file number from the last file, and begins from there. For example, I may have renamed 1150 files, the next time I import or rename in that project, I want the numbering to start at 1151.
Any ideas? Aperture sure is a frustrating program to use, and nowhere near as user friendly as many would have you believe.
    Thank you.

No worry's. Aperture is extremely flexible and once you get the hang of how it does things you will find it make's a lot of sense.
On to your question. The file naming templates are pretty easy to use, the field that you will want to use is counter. As in "custom name with counter". This is easy to customize just choose edit... in the version name drop down in the import window. When customizing you can pretty much choose any fields you wish. Using counter you can choose how many digits and the starting number as well. If you would like to change the actual master filenames during import don't forget to check the box to do so.
If you wish to change the version names of files that you already imported use metadata->batch change...
If you wish to change the actual master file names after you import you will need to use file->relocate master, if you do not know what you are doing with referenced masters be careful with this. If you are using managed masters and want to rename, use the relocate master and then use file->consolidate masters to bring them back into the library.
Let me know if you have any questions or don't understand what I just wrote.

  • How can I re-name a single image after importing it to Aperture?

I am having a problem renaming a single image after importing it - I would have thought it would be simple!  Does anyone know how this can be done?

    Hi RQ,
    Straight out of the manual
    To rename masters
In the Browser, select an image or group of images.
Choose Metadata > Batch Change (or press Command-Shift-B).
In the Batch Change dialog, choose a naming convention from the Version Name Format pop-up menu to specify how you want the masters named. For example, choose Version Name from the Version Name Format pop-up menu to have your master filenames changed to match the names of the corresponding versions in Aperture. If you choose a custom name format, enter the name you want in the Custom Name text field. For more information about naming files, see Automatically Naming Your Imported Images.
Select the Apply to Master File(s) checkbox, then click OK.
The master files corresponding to the selected images are renamed. For more information about working with the Batch Change dialog, see Batch Changing Metadata.
Hope that is what you are after.

  • Batch rename doesn't do what I need it to do

I would like to delete the .jpg extension from about 4000 version names (don't ask me how the extensions got added to the version names -- it's a long story), but the options in batch rename don't offer that option. Is there an applescript or some sort of magic that will allow me to delete the last 4 characters of a version name?

    Steve,
You are right, but here's what happened:
    1. Imported jpeg masters with names ABCDEF.jpg. The resulting version names were indeed ABCDEF.
    2. I manually renamed a bunch of the versions (the name is not relevant to the discussion).
    3. I wanted to get the versions back to their original names, so I used Batch Change to change the version names to the Master Filenames.
    4. This resulted in all my versions being named EXACTLY like the Master Filenames, including the .jpg extensions.
    5. Hence, my problem -- how can I now strip out the .jpg extensions from all my version names?

  • Aperature - Not enough memory to download photos

Need to organize older projects on external harddrive, but not sure how to map off hard drive to external drive.

You could relocate the original files for the images in your older projects to flders on your external drive:
See:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images
In the Browser, select the images whose original master files you want to move.
    Choose File > Relocate Originals.
