Matshita J-898

As with many others, I recently discovered my Superdrive will not load, read, or burn CD's or DVD's. I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" with all Yosemite updates. I upgraded the HDD to a Samsung EVO 840 about two months ago. The drive is a Matshita J-898. It has worked flawlessly until about ten days ago, the first time I've used it since upgrading to Yosemite soon after the the official release. (I never loaded any beta versions.)
Before proceeding, I'd like to make it very clear what (I believe) is NOT the problem. I hope any responses will thoughtfully consider these assumptions before providing trivial, knee-jerk responses. (Please forgive my bluntness...  I'm not going to flame anyone, and I sincerely appreciate any and all attempts to help.)
I am trying to install software from several commercial DVD's that I have already used in the recent past, and they have worked fine. Examples include:
Original Mac install disks provided with the initial purchase of the MBP.
Installation disk from a Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 document scanner.
Brother inkjet all-in-one printer.
Brother laser all-in-one printer.
Commercial release of a Prokofiev symphony (Maxos).
The drive will not accept (load) a blank DVD so I can burn an image to it.
One brand is un-labeled brand (Costco); these have always worked before.
The other is a labeled TDK DVD-R 16X 4.7-GB disk. I have no concerns about the quality of this brand.
Whether pre-recorded or not, ALL disks appear to be in pristine condition. No scratches, no dirt, no warping.
Admittedly I have not cleaned the internal laser, but I've never had any luck doing this on CD/DVD devices in the past.
Here my experience trying to find a solution:
Over the past week I have been searching through Apple support, along with any other Apple/Mac update/support/info sources I can find.
As a result I have tried all the suggestions. I have booted into Safe Mode. I have re-set PRAM. I have re-set the SMC, all according to the instructions provided by Apple for my particular MBP.
Today I called the local Apple retail store, and their phone system referred me to Apple technical support. After a short wait I was connected with Kim (Niagara Falls, Canada). We set up a remote session so she could follow my screen, and we then went through all the previous steps described above. We communicated very well together. The troubleshooting process was very well organized, and she paid close attention to the necessary details. Unfortunately, none of our attempts were successful, and the next recommendation is to visit the Apple store in person so they can check out the hardware.
(We did find references to other
I am certainly willing to do this. However, I made it clear that the likelihood of multiple cases after the Yosemite upgrade makes it highly likely that the upgrade caused the problem. The probability that this is a 'coincidence' is vanishingly small. I really am expecting Apple to accept responsibility for this, and either repair or replace the drive itself, or the internal hardware, or the software (Yosemite) drivers, or the firmware, at no charge. I DID NOT CREATE THIS PROBLEM, AND THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT A 'RANDOM' FAILURE.
I won't be able to get to the store until after January 5th, but I'll report back once I know more. In the meantime, I'd appreciate any suggestions or comments regarding my current attempts, including strategies that may have been tried by others.
Let's all hope we can find an acceptable resolution to this problem.
Ed

Sorry - I left something partially completed...
We found references to some firmware updates, but they were all related to Windows.
Is there any possibility that the drivers are a component of Bootcamp? This does not make a lot of sense, but might be possible. I have run Windows 7 on this machine in the past, but it has been gone for 2+ years. In the meantime I've done several clean installs (Mtn. Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite).

  • Why does my MacBook Pro 7,1 only negotiates SATA1 speeds?

    Hi community,
just noticed that my MacBook Pro 7,1, standard configuration (250GB Toshiba model no. MK2555GSXF, DVD burnet Matshita UJ-898), negociated the link between the nVidia chipset and the two SATA devices at 1,5Gb/s, although all three support 3Gb/s.
Does this mean I won't see a large speed benefit if I swap the internal 250GB Toshiba for a Western Digital Scorpio Black that's rated at 7200rpm and 3Gbit/s?
I initially wanted to buy a 500GB drive (or less) to build a performance FireWire 800 drive, and the Scorpio Back came up as a top contender among platter drives (don't have enough for SSD yet).

Have you been calibrating your battery per your user manual "schedule?"

I have a Matshita DVD-R UJ-898 which worked fine (from the Finder and from Toast 8) until I used an external Matshita drive (can't remember the model).
Now the finder gives this error:
“Untitled DVD” can’t be burned because the disc is read-only and can’t be modified (error code 0x80020042).

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications (including Safari) first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
After installing, reboot your Mac and relaunch Safari, then in Safari Preferences/Security enable ‘Allow Plugins’.
However, you may find that the Old Tiger OS, and the old version of Safari that you can use with it, is not compatible with Facebook Games.

  • Error 4280 for Matshita UJ-831Da - Burn no longer works w/  iTunes.

    23 Dec 07
    MY SYSTEM:
    Sony laptop
    CD/DVD drv = Matshita UJ-831Da
    iTunes ver. 7.5.0.20
    PROBLEM:
    1. Burn quit working when iTunes upgraded to 7.2.
    2. I now get Error 4280.
    3. The only change was an upgrade to iTunes.
    4. No other software, or OS, changed on the system.
    5. Burn always worked with old ver. of iTunes.
    6. Burn still works with Win Media Player.
    7. Burn still works with all other software.
    8. iTunes will not upgrade itself now, nor allow "down"grade.
    9. Slowing burn speed does not eliminate error 4280.
    10. "Run Diagnostics" causes whole system to freeze and crash.
    11. Creating new account on system does not eliminate error 4280
    12. Creating new account on system does not eliminate freeze / crash.
    13. I have credit with iTunes store that cannot be used until fixed.
    QUESTION:
This is an Apple iTunes ONLY software problem. What is the fix?
    Thanks,

For my Matshita UJ-831Da CD/DVD drive, the driver version showing in device manager is 5.1.2535.0. I just now clicked on "update driver" and the reply was that a newer version could not be found.
But why would doing a "Run Diagnostics" in iTunes now freeze / crash my whole system when it never did before? It only began doing that after it also began failing to burn CDs. Again, the iTunes software is the only software that has ceased to burn CDs.
Several months ago, I finally reached by phone a girl at Apple tech support who first denied there were any known problems. But when I told her that the web was full of thousands of people screaming about this very issue she recanted and admitted that iTunes was having these problems, that they had posted the fix for some of the other CD/DVD drives but not mine. She then said, "but if you pay $35 I'll tell you how to fix it." Absolutely unethical. That's like buying a car then being told that there's now an extra fee for being told how to start it. She may have lied about knowing what the fix is, but either way it's absolutely unethical.
The problem is iTunes. iTunes changed and now won't drive the same current drive it worked with when iTunes accepted my money, in advance, to purchase and burn music at future dates. iTunes should fix the problem.
I'm willing to go through the leg-work, to try all of Apple's instructions here, but Apple also needs to follow through with this.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-857D takes forever to erase 100MB file from CD-RW disc

My new MBP works phantastic. Only one thing is weird. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase contents on a CD-RW, about 5-10 times longer than my nearly 5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30.
    Is this normal and expected?
MacBook Pro 15'' 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   IBM ThinkPad T30 XP Pro

It might take longer, it depends on the type of drive your Thinkpad had. Most notebooks, even older ones, have 8x DVD ROM drives, while due to the thin nature of the MBP it has a 6x DVD ROM drive, which means it does work slower.

I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.

  • SOFFICEINTEGRATION 898 error message when trying to send excel file to

    Hi,
I am trying to send excel file from sap dp planning book using macro with document function to outlook mail.
when i am running the macro online its sending the file to my mail
but when i am scheduling a background job and executing its giving me SOFFICEINTEGRATION error 898
    can you please help?
do i need to do any setting any where
    Thanks

    Hello,
Programs that run in the background cannot address controls on the frontend. This is why you are not able to run a Program using SAP Office Integration which is a Frontend Control and can be used only with the SAP Gui. Since background process cannot make use of UI screens or actions hence it's not possible use SAP Office Integration in background processing. The reason for this is explained in note 674060. Therefore sending emails using a batch macro is not supported.

  • Burning DVDs fail at about 1min left using Matshita UJ-825

    Hey everyone,
I tried to find a solution for this problem in the other threads, but none helped me at all. So here's my problem:
I have an iMac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.7 with SuperDrive:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825:
    Firmware Revision: DBN7
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
I used to burn DVDs normally after I bought it 1,5 year ago. But in the past 4 months, I can't burn them no longer. I've tried 5 different brands and had the same problem. Either if I am using iTunes or Finder or Toast 7, my iMac always spit the DVD when it's about to finish burning the disc, at 5 to 1min left.
In iTunes I get a message saying that the disc failed to burn and if I try to insert the disc after, it will never mount on the desktop.
When using Toast, I get a message saying it's a MEDIUM ERROR and then it spits the DVD.
The last DVD brand I bought was HP, and I sucessfully burned around 10 DVDs after it started to happen again, just like the other brands I was using. No matter what speed I use, I always get the same error messages at about 5min to finish burning the DVDs. CDs will burn fine, and it reads all other DVDs (including the ones I sucessfully burned in the past).
    What can be happening?
    Thanks
    Tadeu

Yes, I repaired the permissions today. But how do I clean the drive?
    Thanks

  • Matshita UJ-816 Superdrive: Blank CD-R / DVD-R fail to mount; Error Code 13

    Greetings all,
*deep breath* This will be a long question, but I want to be thorough and informative. Sorry.
My machine is a 1Ghz 12" PB with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-816 DXJ3 Superdrive. It's basically worked fine for reading & burning all common brands of data, video, or audio CD-R & DVD-R media using Finder, iTunes, or iDVD--until now. As recently as 2 weeks ago, I successfully burned an Audio CD with iTunes (although I did get a "could not verify disc" error at the very end, the disc still plays fine).
As of last night, I can suddenly no longer mount blank CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. The same problem manifests for both in Finder: upon insertion, the standard "Choose Action" dialog box appears. When I select "Open Finder", the disc immediately ejects, and I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed becuase an unexpected error occurred (Error Code 13)".
If, on insertion, I choose to open iTunes instead of Finder, the disc does not eject immediately, but does eject as soon as I start a new burn from iTunes.
The drive still reads and mounts burned CD-Rs and burned DVD-Rs, as well as commercial discs. Otherwise, .DMG mount fine, as do flash drives.
Here's a list of fixes I've tried thus far, which I culled from these and other forums:
    - Disc Utility: Repair Permissions
    - "zapped" PRAM
    - reset PMU
    - Delete:
    /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
    /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches (folder)
    - downloaded 'Panther Cache Cleaner' & did a 'Medium Cache Cleaning'
on all Local, System, All Users Caches
    - Open Firmware (cmd-option-O-F at boot-up), entered the
    following commands:
    set-defaults
    reset-nvram
eject-cd (just for the **** of it)
    reset-all
    - Created a new Admin account and tried to mount a disc from there (I already had 2 accounts on my machine, both of which are Admin, but just to try)....no luck.
The only thing I know of that I HAVEN'T tried yet is a laser-cleaning disc, but I'm wary of that, since they're apparently not recommended by Apple for slot-loading drives...?
Meanwhile, there were two other issues that just manifested, which I wouldn't have thought related except that all of it happened around the same time:
1.) The latest Software Update wouldn't install. After downloading, I got
"The update 'XXXXX' [e.g. iTunes, Quicktime, whatev] could not be verified and expanded correctly. Make sure you have permission to write to /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again."
I was able to solve this in Terminal (n00b that I am) using info from:
    <http://www.cybmed.com/macinblog/2004/02/software_update.html>
2.) The latest Virex 7.5 "eUpdate failed", and "try again" was no help.
I solved this by just manually d/l-ing the DAT update from:
    <http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/virex.asp?region=us&segme nt=smb>.
Keep in mind that I haven't installed any new software or hardware or made any system changes recently to explain this confluence of malfunctions. Those other issues could have been coincidence, but who knows?
As you might guess, I'm well out of warranty. Furthermore, I've been reading other horror stories here from people who shelled out for a new drive, only for it to go bad just like the first one--so I really hope it doesn't have to come to that.
So, suffice it to say I'm getting quite frustrated and desperate. If anyone has further suggestions or ideas for my drive problem, I'd really appreciate it.

    PS
Is it just me, or is it ironic how the drive manufacturer has "sh*t" right in the middle of the name?

Without going into a huge disertation, on this let me just say you are not the first and won't be the last that has had issues with the Matshita 816.
I did find a work around, that I will explain.
If you do a lot of burning your drive stores everything in cache files and then all of a sudden will start giving you an error message.
I found running 3 different utilitys, I run them 1 time a week need to or not and haven't got any errors since.

These all three do similar thihgs but some do different things.
    Now lets talk media.
I have had the same problems everyone else has had burning 1X and 2X with some of the poor media out there.
After doing a little leg work and trying a ton of different media I have found that Maxell 16X DVD-R will burn at 1X through 16X and works very well.
Be sure to read the packaging and it will tell you this. I opt to use the 3 packs with the individual Jewel cases.(Much Better Quality).
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
So You try those 3 free and shareware programs and go spend 4 dollars on the Maxell discs and see if that doesn't solve your problem. I sure did mine.

Please Help me. I am having problems with my MATSHITA UJ-857E DVD-R burner/writer. I burned 4 cd's and then it stopped working.
I can select my songs, and then it asks for a blank disc. It starts preparing to write the disc, then it says,"

This is an error reported by the optical drive's firmware. The tracking servo is the servomechanism which guides the laser pickup along the track on the optical disc. The error means that the servo couldn't do its job within the programmed parameters. What it doesn't say is why.
You have to be very precise as to when this error occurs. If it occurs as you wrote, while it "starts preparing to write the disc", and not when it has actually began to burn, then it's likely that the drive has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
There are other possibilities, so you should check them, but they would be more likely if the error occurred after the drive began to write. OrangeMarlin has suggested two options -- try a different brand of CD or DVD, and try cleaning the lens.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 won't play *some* DVDs now (mysteriously!).

Quite mysteriously, my Mac is refusing to play some of my DVDs.
The DVDs aren't scratched or unplayable. I tested them this weekend on someone else's multi-regional player.
These DVDs most certainly did play before on this laptop (a late-2003 Titanium Powerbook--details below) but now just do not! Won't read at all. The DVD never mounts on the desktop. Sputtering. Eventually get spit out.
The two DVDs that my Mac now refuses to play are GRAHAM NORTON FOR YOUR PLEASURE [Region 2] and TABOO THE MUSICAL [Region 2 or maybe Region 0].
I can't imagine what's happened/happening. These played fine as recently as March 2007. I've done nothing to my firmware since that time (on purpose, at least!).
I just got the new BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE DVD [Region 2] and it plays just fine. It also plays all Regions (limits reset by Region X).
Any idea at all why my drive refuses to read/play certain DVDs?
Your help &/or theories are appreciated!
    Thanks.

    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 (Firmware Revision: XXJ3)

It started the same way on my PowerBook G4 15" aluminum with the same optical drive (my laptop is from Sept 2003). After reading some DVD/CD and some not (even didn't recognize them in Finder), once, when I tried to write something on DVD-R (or+R - I don't remember) it didn't do the task - neither with Toast Titanium 9.0.4, nor with Dragon Burn 5.0.5, nor with Disk Utility...!?
One of Geniuses in one Apple store told me my optical drive is about to "die" and I shoul replace it. Well, the estimated cost of replacement was close to $450.
I decided not to do it within Apple.
I ordered new optical drive "*+Apple SuperDrive 8x DVD Burner Drive - Aluminum or iBook G4+*" (MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Reads DVD:Yes; CD-Write:-R, -RW; DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW; Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO) from POWERBOOK MEDIC.COM for $99 + shipping. I replaced it myself for about 2 hours. Replacement by professional shouldn't be more than cost of the part.
Now, I have a new powerful and fast optical drive working as a dream.
    I wish you lack.
