Matshita UJ-835 E enclosure help/suggestions

My Powerbook G4 15'' 1.5 GHz died recently and left me some fun working parts. One of these is the Matshita UJ-835 E superdrive (if I remember correctly, that's the model).
A few questions:
-Has anyone put this drive or a similar one in an enclosure, and can you recommend any? I can do USB 2.0 or Firewire 800.
-Is there any trouble associated with putting a slot loading drive in an enclosure?
-I replaced my laptop with a fun new MacBook Pro, which has a region 1 drive. The UJ-835 from the old laptop is set to region 2. Would I have problems using this old drive externally on my new computer?
If no one can recommend any enclosures, what should I look for when I search, as far as size or key words or compatibility, etc? I'm a bit clueless on this.

I suspect you will already run into trouble with the connectors, since the PB internal flatcables to my recollection combine IDE and power connections.
By the way, have you done all within your power to revive the old PB itself? You might be surprised What a PMU reset will do. For myself, I will just not stand for machines just "dying on me".

Help / suggestions with multiple apple id's

I would like to give a scenario and hopefully get some advice / help / suggestions on how best to approach this:
We are an Academy in the UK with over 700 students on roll ranging from 14 to 18 years old. Each student has an iPad mini. Not all students have their own Apple ID. The Academy is very diverse and we have many students coming and going throughout the year as well as new intake of students each year. iPads can change hands a number of times.
Bearing in mind that one can only activate an ID only 3 times per device, and that an Apple ID can only have 10 devices associated with it, what is the recommendation in terms of getting students up and running with a device and Apple ID?
Here's my reason for asking: We have a number of iPad Minis which can no longer be used because the limit of 3 ID's have been used on those devices. As mentioned, a lot of our students do not already have an Apple ID and so will create one when they are given their iPad. This only has to happen three times and we effectively have a very expensive coffee coaster!

I've never heard of this 3 strikes and your out scenario, if that was the case you wouldn't be able to sell ios devices second hand, unless I'm miss understanding what your describing
Sounds like the devices have not released properly from iCloud, find my phone
and iOS 7 activation lock is on
if you don't know that iTunes account and password you can't do anything with the device
you'll have to prove to apple you own it or track down the iTunes account owner it's locked with

On opening the app "Find my iPhone" I add my password and sign in, to be greeted with a screen that says;
"Update Find My iPhone. A new version of Find My iPhone is available from the App. Store. You must install the update to continue using the app. Update now"
On hitting the "Update now" button I'm taken to the relevant page on the App Store, to be told that I cannot update as it needs IOS8 to be able to continue and as my iPhone is only a 4 cannot install IOS8.
I'm left going around in circles. The only thing would be to delete the app, but looks like I could not re-install the version I would need. Any body have any thoughts or suggestions? (Apart from updating my phone, I have a few months left on the contract!)

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have tried as you suggested, and when opening the "purchased" apps some have the icloud logo next to them, but I only have "OPEN" against "Find My iPhone". When opening it up, it goes through the same routine; needs to be updated before proceeding, and wouldn't update because I don't have IOS8.
Anything else I could try, or am I doomed!

Cannot open PDF files online with Firefox 4, help suggests foxit but don't know what that is?

Earlier versions of Firefox allowed me to open PDF files online, without downloading. Firefox 4 does not allow me to open and read PDF files online, but requires downloading to computer.
Help suggest altering settings in FOXIT READER, manually, but I don't know how to access Foxit reader, if I have it.
Can I alter settings in Firefox 4, or do I have to go back to earlier version.

I was under the impression Foxit was a pdf viewer rather than an addon for Firefox, but maybe there is more than one application with a similar name.
I did not notice mention of foxit in the help, but add-ons are not always mentioned.

Email alias use - help suggestion doesn't work

When sending mail from my .Mac account (via Safari), I can use either my main account or one of two aliases as the "From". When in Mail (2.1.1), I can only use the main account (the aliases don't show up) - tried the action button help, but it's already checked.
I recently upgraded from an older Mac. Thouht I had copied everything, but something got messed up as this did work on the old Mac. Tried the Help suggestion, "Get Prefs, put alias names in Account Info Name Fiekd, etc" - didn't work. Went back to old Mac to get com.apple.mail.plist file, but it isn't there. Any ideas?? Suggestions appreciated.

Create a new account in Mail for each alias: enter garbage in the POP details (different for each one), but the correct details for SMTP, and give the alias as the address. Make sure that in the 'Advanced' tab, 'Include when automatically checking for new mail' is not checked but that 'Enable this account' is. You may find it better to send using the ISP you are connected to the new with rather thann .Mac.
Now the aliases will appear in the drop-down.

Just bought an AirPort Extreme, in need for some help/suggestions.

Hello all.
Just purchased an AirPort Extreme today, very excited about it as my old router was getting worse and worse.
Just finished setting up the basics of the extreme right now, set up the network name, password, and all that.
I obviously know this is a DualBand router, and want to take advantage of it!
I have two main questions...
1. How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
2. I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
My list of devices in the household:
- 2012 iMac
- (2) 2008 Unibody MacBook's.
- iPad
- A few iPhones
- Apple TV
- PS3
Most of the time we have two of the Mac's running at the same time, as well as a few iPhones connected based on who's home or not.
For my Apple TV and PS3, I love to get the best performance possible... Therefore I usually have those running a wired connection to the router.
Any kind of help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm pretty computer friendly, just want to know the best ideas for the best performance!

Do exactly nothing. By default, both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are already broadcasting a signal with the same wireless network name.

Do exactly nothing. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band based on their capabilities (an older iPhone cannot connect to 5 GHz, for example)...and...the relative distance between the wireless device and AirPort Extreme.
If you have newer devices that are capable of connecting using 5 GHz, they will connect at that frequency if they are in the same room or close proximity to the AirPort Extreme. If you walk your laptop a few rooms away, it will probably connect to 2.4 GHz, since those signals are much stronger than 5 GHz signals.
The point is, you do not need to be concerned about this. Devices connect to the best signal quality automatically.

Infinity range extending/boosting. Help/suggestion...

Just had infinity installed with a home hub 4 and all seems to be ok. However the range at one end of my house is not great (where I am most!) and have a few dropouts and or slow speed. I just wondered what people's experience and solutions are for range extending. I would consider those extenders that go through electrical wiring circuit. Have people used these? Are they any good? Can you plug the ethernet from your modem into one and move the home hub 4 more central and plug that into the out one? Has anyone used any wireless ones?
I used to have virginmedia and used my apple time capsule as a router and and airport express to extend the range, but I don't see that these apple products can be used with anything non Apple?
I have tried plugging the Ethernet in the back of my time capsule from the BT modem and by-passing the home hub 4, but this does not appear to work either.
As I say just wondered what people experience is with boosting the range and how they have gone about it and what works well.

Firefox hangs after a few minutes and freezes whole system -- tried all the help suggestions already

I just updated to the latest version of Firefox and now it hangs after a few minutes of use (maybe when using Facebook)...I tried all of the existing help suggestions and none of them worked. Once it hangs, I can no longer use my machine as it freezes everything. I have to shut down...and even that takes forever to happen. :(

If you still have problems, and are running a 64 bit processor you may want to install Waterfox instead of Firefox. On the case that you are running a 32 bit operating system do not install Waterfox. PP 6.0 on Mid 2011 iMac.   Helpful Suggestions, please?

New here. Used to cutting AVID but wanted to start using PP 6.0 on my iMac at home for personal and side projects.   Reading over the problems some are having with their iMacs, it's starting to look like I might be screwed, but I'm hoping there's a few solutions out there.
My system:
IMac, Mid 2011, 21.5. 16GB RAM,
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M
storage: GTech 8 TB Thunderbolt.
I'm running into constant crashes. Two different projects so far.
1st Project is HDV footage from my old Sony camera. Captured fine, seem to cut fine, but when I started dealing with some graphics and keying issues, PP6 would stop responding and I'd have to Force Quit out.
2nd Project is a show reel for a friend.   I'm cutting pieces of his compositing work out of Large HD resolution AVI and MP4 files. Basically he's grabbed copies of the films he worked on and I'm pulling clips from those. This one crashes every 2 minutes just out of spite I think.
I'm writing all that to find out if it's the media I'm using, or the system config, or if there's something else I'm unaware of, though I think most likely a combination.
Again, ideally I won't be cutting a lot of HD material, or much long form, but I wanted a home editing solution that would work. BTW.. I was running a AVID demo version with no issues. sd

What can I do to rectify the situation in which Firefox will not open pdf files in the browser, even though I have already used all the help suggestions to no avail?

I have tried everything Mozilla has suggested. Still when I click on a pdf, I get the message that the browser cannot open a pdf. I have gone through the help protocol, and it does not work.
I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, and still not able to open pdf files within the browser.
What else do I do, except go to IE or Chrome and just leave Firefox completely???

A possible cause is the presence of a PDF plugin from an older Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

Thank you for not only the tip but also especially the research showing that for anybody other that those using Wi-Fi for the first time the network wouldn't disappear. I wanted it to disappear for everyone so.....I finally solved it by resetting the Airport Extreme to the factory settings and starting over from scratch! It worked! Yay!!!!!
So, for everyone that has had this problem (and I've read many of the same complaints in different places on the Internet), you must go into Airport Utility and check the box stating that you want to reset it to the factory settings. Do not do it with a paper clip and the reset button on the box; I tried that first and it did not work. You must reset it via the Airport Utility. Then just start over and you will have the choice to NOT check the box to Enable Guests. If you want to enable guests, just be sure not to use your name or you're back to the same problem. Apple is so great with everything...wouldn't it have been so easy for them to just put this in the manual somewhere????? Thanks for all your help. Hope this helps others!

Firefox crashes upon opening, despite having tried all help suggestions and re-installing new version.

I have a MAC: 2006, but intel Core Duo; version 10.4.11
I have had some difficulties with my Firefox recently: crashing occasionally, not always loading a page on the first try, saved e-mails or passwords working off and on. I trashed my current version of Firefox (I was told by my tech guys to uninstall it and download a new version, but I couldn't find an uninstall package for mozilla, so I dragged it to the Trash) and I uninstalled flip4MAC, too. I tried to download version 4, but my system could not run it, so I downloaded 3. 16. 12 - it worked really great for a while, but then started to revert to its old problems and my tech guys said I might not have done a complete uninstall- I am a bit of a techno-peasant, so I may have not done it properly. In the meantime, I upgraded my Internet service with Bell and was going to download Snow Leopard- I have Tiger- to see if that helped, but after the upgrade, Mozilla won't even open at all; the window comes up with a tab that says "restore session" and it freezes immediately and then closes with a crash report and an icon in the apps bar called "Crash Reporter." I have copied the incident report and am including it with this email. Bell tech support says it is not their issue, it's mine, which I think is probably correct, but why did it completely crash after the upgrade?
I did go on Mozilla Firefox's website for support through Safari, and tried all the suggestions, but Safari's Mozilla Firefox only displays the search bar and not the address bar, so I used the tip to got ''library/,'' etc to get the crash i.d. I was able to get the i.d., but when I typed in the url with my crash id, I got an error message: File not Found. I tried it more than once, so I copied it from one of the reports sent to you guys and I only hope that you are able to use the crash info I submitted below (after Trouble shooting info).

#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.

Stolen iPod...Ideas, Help, Suggestions,...Sympathy

Bad news and good news. I own two identical iPod Touches, one for home and one for work. The one from work was recently stolen. I have an idea who, but can't prove it. Anyway, this person has downloaded a "free" app because the A Store sent me a receipt, being as its tied to my account and all. They don't have my password so they can't download any "paid" apps thank goodness. Which leads me to ponder, why doesn't Apple require a password for ANY installations on your iPod? Also, if this is the person I think it is, they have a Windows (spit) machine at home. So if they plug my iPod in there then Windows (spit) won't recognize the Mac format I believe.
Is there a way to de-authorize my main account for that particular iPod by serial number, etc.? Maybe thru iTunes so that any downloads from that iPod will not be tied to my account.
Is there a way that you could use a Windows (spit) machine to extract a Mac formatted iPod's mojo? Music, Notes, etc.
How close do the two iPod's have to be for me to use peer-to-peer? I have the latest OS but don't have any PTP apps installed. Is there another way?
Is there any other way that this could be worse for me? I have already changed my home WiFi passwords, etc.
Now for the good news. My Plant Manager wants to replace my iPod! Great!! I'm all for that....but I still wish I could somehow nuke my stolen iPod like I can my iPhone.

Password protection was enabled about 90% of the time but there were times when I would disable it to let someone use it. I am the ONLY Mac user of over 150 employees at my plant. (Coal-Fueled Power Generation). These folks buy Zune's and such and laugh at how much I pay for Apple products, but everyone wanted to try it out and I didn't want them to hassle with a password so there were times that I would leave work and it be disabled but still securely kept or so I thought. It was stored in a locked office, inside of a locked drawer, inside of a locked storage cabinet and there was really no personal info kept on it just mainly music.
I have tried to contact Apple a couple of times but as usual am having extreme wait times....longer than my patience or my schedule will endure unfortunately. I'll try again later or email.
I am interested in knowing how easily a Mac formatted iPod can be "cracked" with a Windows machine. I am not familiar with any file restoring or recovering apps, etc., for Windows. It may not even be possible.
I do though, wish that Apple would require a password to download and install ANY app, paid or free....maybe add that feature in the preferences. And also permit an iPod to be de-authorized online without that iPod being connected. (Forbidden from purchasing or downloading any files through an Apple account.) I'll pass this suggestion along to Apple.
