Mavericks Install stuck?

So I tried to install the free version of Mavericks and it downloaded, but when I restarted to install it told me it couldn't be installed and that the disk is damaged and can't be repaired. Help!

i have the same outcome from a related problem.
i have a macbook late 2009 (6.1). i just upgraded with a new 240gb SSD, which I installed myself. I used my old harddrive to boot from, using CMND+R. i formatted the new SSD and installed a clean version of Mavericks to the newly formatted SSD. all was well. unfortunately, i used migration assistant and it brought over user preferences i did not want. so, i want to reformat my new SSD drive, again, and reinstall Mavericks, again.
however, taking the same steps as i described above produced very different results the second time. this time, i am unable to reformat the SSD, and it returns an error saying that it cannot unmount the disk because it is locked. i tried following other posts, which are not definitive and extremely unhelpful, and the advice of repairing or verifying the disk does not work. the error message returned when i try this is that "live repair" of the disks is not supported.
so, to re-cap... the problem here is definitely not an old harddrive. and the CMND+R recovery has not helped me yet. i cannot revert to an older OS like mountain lion because on both the new internal SSD and the old external drives have Mavericks on them.
i can start the computer and work in the new SSD 100%. but like i said, i want a clean install this is not negotiable. i want the old user preferences off, and i want to build my new harddrive from the ground up with only fresh downloads, apps, etc. so how can i accomplish this?

  • Mavericks install stuck on "downloading addons"

I`m selling my iMac, so I`m in the process of deleting it. When I rebooted into Disk Recovery, I can`t format the systemdisk. When I try, I get a message saying that the disk can`t be deactivated.
On the systemdisk I have one partition with OS X and one with Bootcamp.
I could not format the whole disk, but I could format the parition with OS X, so I did.
When restarting now, I choose "Install OS X". Logged in with my AppleID and the machine started downloading Mavericks. It was working for about 10 sec, anf then I needed to enter my AppleID again.
When that was done, I got to this screen, and here I`m stuck now:
The text is Norwegian, but it says something like "Downloading Addons. The machine will restart automatically", and this is what is has been looking like for the past 30 min. No movement in the bar...
    Anyone?

    News;
Turned the mac off for a couple of hours (let it cool down.)
When i  booted up I now got a question if i want to continue OSX install.
Every option in the menu seems to be responsive too. No mouse-loadng-animation.
I have 42 minutes remaining. Will post updates.
    Tips to others having similar problem;
Disconnect charger, shut down power, let the machine cool down.
    See if this gives results.

  • Mavericks install stuck at "about a second remaining"

    Hi.
    I'm making a clean install.
The install process is stuck at "about a second remaining". And the progress barre is full and it is waving!
    Please any idea?

I've am currently experiencing this problem too.
I've tried several times and changed a few things alas still no Mavericks.
First attempt instal halted at "About a second remaining" for over an hour. I did a hard reset and tried exactly the same again - no luck.
Second attempt I re-installed the USB drive with Mavericks, erased the hard drive and tried again - halted at "About a second remaining" for over an hour.
Third attempt same as above and now halted at "About a second remaining" for the past hour and a half ... could anyone reasure me that this install taking well over 2 hours is normal as most are only experiencing problems for 10-15 mins ...
    Thanks in Advance!

  • Failed Mavericks Install / Time Machine

My iMac is stuck in a loop after failed Mavericks install.  The message told me to back up data, erase and install again.  Naturally, I hadn't run Time Machine in a month and had some important files to try and save (stupid, I know).  Fortunately, I got the real important stuff backed up using firewire mode and an old MacBook.
At this point, the iMac can't boot into either safe mode or into the disk repair with my old Snow Leopard disk.  My question is whether I can now connect my external drive with an existing backup to the MacBook and have it make a backup of the iMacs contents.  I'm curious whether Time Machine will recognize the iMac's hard drive as the same volume even though it is mounted on the MacBook as an external drive.  Will this work or should I go buy a new external drive and try and clone the iMac's contents?
I have AppleCare but I'd like to take care of this prior to taking it in as they may want to replace the drive.  The Time Machine method seems preferable so I can restore the system exactly the way it was very easily.

Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading?

  • Looking for "createinstallmedia" kb/5856 I do not find it on my Maverick installed system?

With Mavericks installed and these instructions the command cannot be found?
Creating a bootable OS X installer in OS X Mavericks
With OS X Mavericks, you can create a bootable OS X installer which can be used to install the operating system while started from removable media, such as a USB flash drive.
Follow these steps to create a bootable OS X installer:
Use the Mac App Store to download the OS X installer app.
Mount the volume you wish to convert into a bootable installer. This could be removable media, such as a USB flash drive, or a secondary internal partition.
Use the createinstallmedia tool to convert the volume from step two into a bootable installer based off the installer app from step one. To learn how to use createinstallmedia, execute this command in Terminal:
    /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia
You may need to adjust the path to the OS X installer app in the above command.
Note: createinstallmedia is only intended to be used with the version of OS X installer app it came with.

  • Time machine won't back up after Maverick install

Installed Maverick today on macbook pro, then have been unable to back up to Time Machine to my Western Digital 3TB drive.  Last back up was successful just before install earlier today.
Time Machine Error "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.
    and a second message
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “My Book”. Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only. You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
First restarting after Maverick install I received an error message that the disk "my book" could not be repaired.
When I go to get info on the external drive, under sharing and permissions it sayes I can read only, and I cant figure out how to change this everything to try is grey'd out.
Any help in fixing the problem and understanding the issue.

I'm also having this issue. I havn't had it before.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Speed (lack of) issues-Macbook pro post Maverick Install

Hi all... long time browser first time poster... this maverick install is killing my life.
Upgraded to Maverick, my computer was almost useless with spinning beach ball of death for everything I opened. I did the 'usual' useless stuff that someone at a realtively low IT base (like myself) would do, cleaned out trash, restarted etc. Check what was running etc, no love.
Read a bunch of other posts, tried some seemingly good advice, like verifying disk permissions and repairing disk permissions. This definitely helped, alot, and I was now able to use my notebook again, but it's still much slower than usual in most areas, and might be lucky to survive the day at work as I fear I will throw it at the wall next time excel locks up on me!
Here is my etrecheck output as most suggest I require before asking for help. I would LOVE any advice that may help me clean this up.
NOTE- the time machine back ups have actually occured to the best of my knowledge, so i don't fully understand this in the report.
    Many thanks, Levi
PS- I am currently running another time machine back up now. And, no, stupidly i did not do a recent one before i installed.... yes i realise this was silly!

    Problem solved.....
Apple support on phone could not work it out.
Apt at genius bar saw many expected thoughts- First assumption was hard drive was gone, tested this, all ok. Next was the disk needed a full repair, this would fix it. No good either. Final call- erase the entire system. Re-install the OS, and then manually trasnfer back my files from the time machine back ups, NO restore.
    this has solved it.
Clearly my computer could not handle the Maverick install without a full erase prior. Be warned, it can absorb a **** of a lot of your time, and if like myself your computer is your day-to-day work horse... it could cause you some serious down time.

  • Laptop Crashed During Maverick Install -- Need Help

    Hello Everyone,
Before we get started, I just want to open with this info: My Macbook Pro is from 2008, and has a notorious habit of crashing... I hear what sounds like a rhythmic "ticking" sound from within the laptop, and everything on screen freezes up, and I have to do a hard-reboot. Other than that and a few graphical glitches with games, it runs seamlessly and had a good 19 GB free while attempting the update. Also to note, I have a BootCamp partition of about 30 GB for Windows XP. Additionally, I was an IDIOT and did NOT set up Time Machine or make a backup for my files, because, I repeat, I'm an IDIOT apparently.
So I had 10.6.8 installed -- Snow Leopard... and I heard there was a new free update to 10.8.0: Maverick. Of course it peaked my interest and I tried to install, not realizing it could potentially brick my laptop! Shoulda done some research
    Anyway, here's what happened:
The download was successful, so I rebooted my computer and initialized the installation. Everything was fine, it said it would take about 50 minutes (even though it took a LOT longer)... and the install got not even half way before my computer crashed, with the infamous ticking sound. I was like, "oh sh**" because everyone knows that a crash during a major install is not good news. After I restarted the computer, it opened up the Maverick install again immediately, and attempted to retry... but within 10 minutes, an error pops up: "Install failed: OS X can’t be installed on the disk, because a recovery system can’t be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more."
Of course at this point, I'm confused. I have no idea what that means. So I try to reboot to see if it would help, and the same error occured twice more.
This time, when I rebooted, I held Alt-Option to see if I could just select my HD drive and bypass the install. Nope. The only options were this: "Windows Partition, Maverick OSX Install, recovery-(something something)"... my HD drive wasn't even listed! This made me nervous. So, I selected the recovery disk option and it opened a menu with a few options, including reinstalling OSX, disk utility... etc. So I selected disk utility. I then proceeded to select my HD drive, and click "repair" in the first aid tab. It took about 10-15 minutes, but it successfully finished, giving me a green "Disk seems ok" message. This was a bit of relief. But now that the disk is repaired, how do I access it and exit the endless loop of Maverick installation? Do I need to reinstall OSX with my original disk/Snow Leopard disk?
Please help me recover my HD drive... I desperately need my laptop for school.
Thanks in advance. If you need any more additional info on my computer, I will be happy to try and provide it.

if you have no install disk, best to do fsck. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 hopefully that will do something for you. when you say it "freezes" at startup it is hard to know what to tell you. there are different types of screens that occur with startup issues. this is an incredible article for startup issues--http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464. do not worry that it says "10.3.9 or earlier". these steps are reliable for tiger as well. i hope that works for you.[:)]

  • Apple Hardware Test Unavailable? Mac Pro 2008, Mavericks installed

Restarting my early 2008 Mac Pro with Mavericks installed while holding down the "D" key and it's just booting up like normal. Tried holding it before it shuts down, holding it after the startup tone, and holding it after the grey screen appears (which the apple site says is wrong).
    Any suggestions?

  • EYETV LITE WILL NOT STARTUP WITH NEW MAVERICK INSTALL

eye lite will not start up with new maverick installed untill you unpluge usb then reinstall.

Well, I download the driver for Windows 8.1 64 bit, it appears to down load then says extracting and the bar goes along to 100% then nothing. There is no option to install the printer wirelessly, the printer does not appear in the devices and printers, the Scan Doctor tries to fix the problem and just says need to install the wireless facility by using the manual when I select the wireless option. As I said, I can plug in USB and use printer fine but what is the point of having wireless if it doesn't work? Printer worked fine when installed on Home Hub 2. Got a new lap top and still  no problems. Problems started when had to have new Home Hub as the broadband connection kept dropping out. BT sent HH3 as don't do HH2 any more. Realised that the printer was still holding the details of the old hub but couldn't find a way of changing this. Reset printer to factory wireless settings so not holding these now. Cannot use CD to load printer as doen't work with Windows 8.

Why is there a SequenceInputStream but no SequenceOutputStream? How would you handle writing to multiple types of streams over a socket?
