Mavericks Mail Inexplicably Stops Retrieving Email

It doesn't matter if I set the preferences to check automatically, every 1 minute, every 5 minutes, etc. Mail just stops retrieving, and even more aggravating is the fact that the Activity monitor runs at the specified interval, implying that my mail is being checked. And yet, if not for checking my email on my iPhone, I'd think everything was fine, it's just a particularly slow day. When I see that in fact I've gotten a number of emails, I check my Mavericks Mail manually, and still nothing comes in. It's only upon deactivating all my accounts and then reactivating, or quitting the app and then restarting that I get all the mail I've already gotten on my iPhone. This is pretty infuriating, as I get caught up in my work and forget that my Mac Mail is "moody."
I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 and Mail 7.3.

You may be affected by the bug, but this is the first time I've heard that it affects some accounts and not others.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Set up one of the affected accounts while logged in as Guest. Test. Don't open any messages. Just see whether they're retrieved.
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Mail has stopped retrieving messages from Yahoo email account.  I deleted the account, cleared Safari history and recreated the account.  Successfully retrieved all folders and contents of folders but no messages.  Watching the Activity, it appeared to be retrieving the messages but none appear.  Looking at the log, I can see FETCH error server.  Not sure where to go from here to resolve the issue.  Thanks for your help.

  • Mail does not retrieve emails

My Mail has two acct (mac.com and an exchange acct). This morning, Mail suddenly stops retrieving new emails from the exchange acct. (mac.com acct works fine). I know it tries, since the dailing spin spins. But seems it has hard time connecting to the server and fetching new emails. Activity viewer shows "logging in as user ..." and "sync.. with server" working.
Checked with our sys adm, the server is fine. I can access my acct via web client.
Help please! I have been using Mail for a few years and don't want to give up.
    HW

    You’re welcome.
    > I'm afraid that the size of the mailbox is pretty big. I checked
    ~/Library/Mail/exchange-acct, which is about 6GB.
OK. That may be the problem then. The overall size of the account folder is not an issue, but individual mailboxes should be under 2 GB in Mail 2.x (the limit was even lower in Mail 1.x).
You may use the Account Info window to check how much size each mailbox takes up on the server — choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailbox list in the main Mail window.
Check that none of your mailboxes is larger than 2 GB. Create custom mailboxes on the server and re-organize your mail there however you wish via webmail if necessary.
When done, you may want to re-create Mail’s index and cached mailbox contents as follows (and this may certainly take a while given the size of the account):
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Maverick Mail Printing Problem: prints email header on separate page from body of email.  Why?!

Maverick Mail Printing Problem: prints email header on separate page from body of email.  Why?!

For what it's worth, I can report exactly the same problem.  I just recently converted from Outlook for Mac 2011 to Mail.  I did the conversion while running Yosemite.  I like pretty much everything about Mail EXCEPT that it take 2 pages to print a 1 page email!!  The header appears on the top of p.1, followed by a blank space.  The message begins at the top of p.2.
If you scale it down, you can get the message to begin to appear on the bottom of p.1, but clearly, Mail is inserting BIG SPACE between the header and the message.  Changing the display fonts for Mail had no apparent effect (except that the font DID change, of course)....still a BIG SPACE between the header and the message.
Coming to Mail for the first time, I would have assumed that this was just a quirk of Mail, but am I understanding that some of you Mail users out there USED TO NOT have this problem??  I think it's pretty clear that it's Mail that's causing the problem, not the message, because I went over to my old Outlook and printed the same couple of messages with no such space between the header and the message.  So Mail is inserting a space into the print formatted email message that is NOT there in Outlook's print formatted same message.
Be really nice to get rid of this problem, but my Apple Care free support has expired.  Not sure I want to pay for something that's generic to Mail!!  Anyone else made any progress on this?

  • Mavericks mail server stops distributing group email after a few hours of usage

I've been having problems with our Mavericks mail server ever since our upgrade with group mail.
The server will distribute group email for a few hour, then it simply stops working.
No error message, no bounces, and the server keeps the incoming mail in its incoming queue.
Restarting the mail services by either server.app or serveradmin mail stop; serveradmin mail start command like  are the only way I can get it to continue to distribute the email.  I suspect it has to do with postfix itself hiccuping?  But this is a reproducable problem.
Mail filtering is on, score set to 6, 10 mb limit, spamhaus is active.
Looking for tips on how to stablize this service short of setting up cron job to restart the services every few hours.

I know this is not the fix you are looking for, but it's what I had to do, so I thought I'd share.
Hopefully, someone will be able to figure it out the "right" way!
I created this AppleScript that will stop and start the mail service every hour.
You can copy and paste it into AppleScript Editor, compile it and save it as an application.  You can then run it.  You need to run it from an administrator account and keep that user logged in.
If once an hour (every 3600 seconds) is too often, just change 3600 to however many seconds you want.
Be sure to change AdminPassword with the Admin user's actual password.
    repeat
do shell script "/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/sbin/serveradmin stop mail" password "AdminPassword" with administrator privileges
      delay 60
do shell script "/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/sbin/serveradmin start mail" password "AdminPassword" with administrator privileges
              delay 3600
    end repeat

  • Mail suddenly stopped retrieving from my email provider...

Upgraded to Moutain Lion a week ago. So I do not know if this is a ML issue. But figured it was a place to start.
My email is hosted through Network Solutions and has performed flawlessly for 7 years.
Yesterday - Apple Mail 6.0 stopped receiving emails. I would get intermittant offline signals - would open the Connection Doctor and it would be red/off/or green.
I double checked my Network Solutions account and saw the unreceived emails sitting there. So I haven't lost any.
Apple Mail now shows green lights "connected to tthe internet".
But I am not getting any test emails I send to myself or have friends send to me. Meaning - they are not downloading to my Apple email client. They are still sitting at Network Solutions.
My cable provider - who has also worked flawlessly for the two years I have had them (I work from home) is Charter Internet. I don;t know what, if any, effect they may have on things. Right now just can;t seem to get email to talk to email provider.
Abd the ONLY thing that has changed at all is the OS. So I figured I'd start there.
    Any help is appreciated.

After waiting on hold for an hour with Network Solutions - a recording popped up and said - "Your wait now is no more than 54 minutes"
I about blew a gasket. And hung up.
This is really strange. But - is this happening a lot more than is being talked about on the Apple Discussion board?
I have not had an opportunity to reinstall ML yet.

  • Mail suddenly stops retrieving mail for one of 4 accounts

I'm in the middle of a project, getting a steady stream of e-mails to a particular account, when sometime last night Apple Mail stopped retrieving my mail from Comcast for that account.
I logged into Comcast, my mail is sitting there, but the Apple Mail client isn't picking it up. (The other 3 accounts, which are set up identically on Comcast and in Apple Mail Preferences, continue to work normally.)
Re-entered the password in Mail Preferences for that account, it still doesn't work.
Closed and opened Mail, no go for that account. Restarted my Mac, no fix for this Mail glitch.
Thinking that I would have to delete it, I emptied the Inbox and Sent mail for the bad account (moved the mail to mailboxes on my Mac).
Per OS X Mail: Troubleshooting sending and receiving email messages - Apple Support
Connection Doctor is all green dots, for all mailboxes
I tried to rebuild the mailbox in question, NOTHING HAPPENED. Absolutely nothing showed up in the Activity window.
What now? I am prepared to delete and re-establish that one account in Apple Mail, but I want to lose a minimum of data. I definitely do not want to blow away the other accounts and mailboxes!

    You are welcome.

  • Mail Quits When retrieving email

whenever mail opens it quits quickly while trying to retrieve email. i can't do anything because it quits so fast. i heard from someone that it may be because i have Office 2008 installed. is this related? how do fix it?

I am having the same problem. Never a problem with Mail but a couple of weeks after installing Office 2008, things have been funky. I will uninstall 2008 and update on conditions.
Update: Deleted Office 2008 with same results continuing in Mail. Can't find anything else I have changed on my system to warrant the start of the problem.

  • Pop gmail account using Mac Mail has stopped receiving email.

I have two pop gmail accounts using Mac Mail.  One has stopped receiving email while one is fine.  Both are set up exactly the same.  Any idea how to fix this issue?

I saw on Yahoo's site the following:

    Does that address your problem?
I see you're using the UK version and that there's no similar page on the Yahoo UK site but perhaps it helps anyway. Have a look here as well: http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-30.html

  • Mail just stops receiving email

Mail just stops receiving mail randomly and multiple times through out the day.  We are using an in house IMAP mail server.  I can use Sparrow, PostBox, etc and it never stops receiving using those clients.  All I have to do to get Mail working again is close Mail and then restart.  It will work for a few hours then stop receiving.  When it is not receiving and can still send.  I have IMAP set up on my iPhone and it continues to receive even when Mail stops.  It has got to be a setting or something in Mail I just can find what it is.  I am running and iMac 3.4ghz, I7 with 16GB RAM, 256K SSD and 1TD SATA, and Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  Any assistance would be appreciated.  I don't want to use the other clients, I would rather use Apple Mail.
    Thanks.

I re-booted and it went away... for now.  Will get back to you when it happens again so I can describe it.

  • Do I need Mavericks Mail setup to send emails through website forms?

I'm not sure where to start but I believe I may have 2 separate questions.
I have a Mac Server ( Mavericks ) for my websites on a dedicated IP. I do not need the email as I have another email server on a second IP locally.
I want to be able to email form submissions from the the websites. I know how to write the form / script to make it work, but I'm unsure how or even if I need to set up the server a specific way to make this happen as this part is new for me.  Can someone point me in the right direction?
Secondly, I've also noticed in my mail logs that emails are sent out from [email protected] to random emails. I think what's happening is my wordpress client ( whom is using her yahoo address for posting notifications ) is actually receiving system emails for the posts and a copy of the post is also being sent out to the poster. It's all spam posts mind you. I turned off the notification setting in wordpress and I am still seeing emails coming through. I mention this as fixing question 1 may address this issue.
Sorry if this is confusing and thank you in advance.

You would not need a mail server on the same server as the website but likely you will need to have your website use your existing mail server. Ideally you would have your website and form use an existing mail server account on your mail server to send as so it can use an authenticated login to your mail server to do this, otherwise you will need to configure your mail server to allow your website to send using an unauthenticated connection. This later option makes it more likely for spammer to hijack this to send spam via your mail server.

  • Mavericks Mail has a bug:  emails refresh and I loose current email.

Many times, when reading emails in mail in the mornings, I loose my email from the unread smartbox where I was reading it.  The problem I found is that Mail refreshes after getting more email and after refresh, the email I was reading does no longer meet the unread condition of my smartbox.  It is extremely annoying.
Is anyone experiencing similar problems caused by mail's refresh?
    Apple, please fix this!
Most people recommended to access gmail directly online.   But I manage multiple emails in my mail (gmail would be messy)...
    ideas?

Ok, well, the good news is that only 2 people on earth have had this problem.  The other good news is that I have narrowed the culprit down to Keychain which was causing mail to refresh every 60 seconds.  Hopefully this will save someone else many, many hours of greif should they come across the same issue.
Turning off keychain under iCloud settings fixes the problem immediately.  Turning it back on brings the problem back immediately.  I would still like to use Keychain across my devices so I've tried the Repair option in Keychain First-Aid under the Keychain menu.  I have applied this on both my air and iMac (as doing it on one didn't fix it on the other) and restarted both machines.  First-aid did find and fix a couple of Keychain issues.  Will know whitin a week whether that was the correct fix or not as it can take anywhere from 5 hours to 5 days for the issue to reappear after a restart.

  • Why has my mac mails suddenly stopped sending email

I have a new mac air--not even 6 months old.  My mac mail has had the same address for almost 10 years.  In the last year my mac mail will suddenly stop sending.  The last time I talked to mac support they said there was a definite problem and when the new update was installed with the fix, it would start working again--it did, a few weeks ago.   Today...it stopped sending again. WHY?

How are you trying to read them? What process are you using and what applications are involved?

  • Apple Mail clients not retrieving emails properly over IMAP

I posted this in Tiger Mail but no responses; hopefully someone here has some knowledge of this issue.
I'm testing an email server on 10.5 with IMAP.
Here's my setup all using the same user IMAP account.
    1 Outlook 2007
    1 Thunderbird (on Vista Business)
2 Mail 2.1.3 on 2 different 10.4.11 Apples (one Mac Mini and one MacBook Pro 17")
    1 iPhone
When sending emails to this user account, all the non-Apple Mail clients receive them instantly or after I force a 'Send/Receive' command without any problems.
The 2 Apple Mail clients do not receive the new emails on their own OR with 'Get Mail' command OR the 'Synchronize' command. They flat out refuse to receive new emails.
When I close and reopen the Apple mail clients, they do receive the new emails immediately. OR if I select an existing mail message in the view, then they receive the new emails.
Totally weird but definitely an Apple Mail issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After trying to isolate every variable, I created a new test account and deleted the existing one I had been using. Problem solved - it works great now!
For some reason, the original user account had some type of corruption.
