Mavericks Safari Memory Hog

Recently, I noticed my free RAM was very low when running Safari.    Lpooking at the activity monitor having one page open is displaying "Safari Web Content"  as usin 247 MB in addition to Safari using 36 MB.    The amutn of memory goes up with additional pages are open.
I have stopped using Safari until I get this figured out.  Any ideas?

Have a look here for more information about Safari's memory challenges - referred to as "world leaks".

  • Safari memory hog?

The new update has been keeping my system slow so I start monitoring my activity and have found out that safari is taking so much of my RAM. It takes about 250 MB- 320MB of my RAM. I don't have other programs running as I mainly use my computer for browsing. has anyone noticed this too with the new safari?

    Hi,
You can control Flash using ClickToFlash.
    http://clicktoflash.com/
Very handy plugin and very easy to use.
Also, it's not necessarily the RAM that can cause slow downs with your Mac OS X unless you are using RAM intensive apps like PhotoShop or FinalCut Pro.. as examples.
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*

  • Web Process + Safari now hogging 50-75% more memory than Safari 5.0.5 did

Now that Apple has split Safari into two processes — Web Process (handles page loads and other traffic) and Safari (handles interface, bookmarks, history, etc) — these two processes together are using 50% to 75% more memory than Safari did before the upgrade to 5.1.
Three days ago, the most RAM I'd ever seen Safari hog (after several hours of surfing multiple tabs) was 1.1GB (still way more than it needed, once back down to 3 or 4 tabs).
Today, after surfing only an hour:
    WebProcess 1.3GB
    Safari           552MB
Anyone else seeing this? And anyone have ideas about limiting this memory hogging?

Well, to add a little more frustraton to this thread, a few weeks ago, when I first saw all the bugginess with this "update", I called Apple, was handed up to a higher-level tech person. He told me they were aware of all these problems, and promised me a fix would be released "ASAP".  Well, a few weeks later, & of course, no fix. About a week ago, I called again, & was handed to a different higher-level guy, but this time he gave the same tired, "you should disable all your extensions & plug-ins" blah, blah, blah...   And worse, he told me that he's heard nothing from users about issues with Safari!!!
Well, I then asked him if the problem really was one or some of the add-ons, why couldn't Apple just give us a list of at least some of the more popular ones that don't work. Why should ever single user have to go thru a one by one, trial & error, add one, then restart, then another, etc, since Apple could just do it, & let us know. Of course, that's never happened, so everyone has been trying anything they can, &/or resorting to using other browsers, & posting here & other places. I sure hope Apple quits stonewalling everyone, you would think they would address this, either by fixing it quickly, or at least letting everyone know they are aware of it, and that a fix will be coming, but pretending they no see, no hear nothing, and it's all in our heads, well, ...... it shucks.

I recently read in this forum that "Safari is a memory hog". Exactly how do I determine now much memory Safari is using? Does the amount of memory used increase with usage or over time?

Oddly, I don't really see that on any of my systems. What I do see is an occasional site that causes Safari to go nuts, using all available memory. I've seen that today on the Washington Post opinion pages. Not the opinion home, but if I go to any of the columns themselves, my memory gets maxed out, with Safari using >90% of available memory.
    Strange...

  • Safari 5 - A Big Memory Hog

Safari 5 hogs memory up to a point where it slows down the whole system and provokes freezes by the dozen -- on my system with 4 GB of RAM no other software is as often "unresponsive" as Safari.
Safari's memory usage starts with about 150 MB real memory (plus the same amount in virtual memory) and after some browsing gobbles up to 1 GB (Firefox and Chrome never exceed 120 MB). Then all other open programs as well as the Finder slow down to a crawl.
I haven't installed any plugins or extensions other than those loaded with the standard Safari installation. I use ClickToFlash to avoid Flash content. And I also go regularly through all the motions like permission repair, cache emptying (which I do several times a day), Onxy etc.
The only remedy currently is optimizing the memory with the iFreeMemory utility (recommended!!!).
I'm amazed that nothing has been done in to solve this problem in Safari 5 although this is a known issue since Safari 4.

I experience this memory problem too, but since a few days only. I never registered Safari using that much memory before, however it managed to fill my whole 4 GB of RAM several times in the past days.
I tried to apply the classic advice you get in online forums, like permission repair and cache emptying, but these measures could only delay the problem. Deactivating the extensions "adblock" and WOT didn't help.
Moreover, I originally bought a mac in order to not need to do such work anymore...^^.
Is there any further advice available on this subject, else than getting back to using firefox (I really like the speed and appearance of safari)?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Why is Safari such a memory hog?

I brought up the activity momitor on my 20" Core Duo, just to see how memory was being used (I have full 2GB). I was rather shocked to see that the leading user of both real and virtual memory was Safari: 598MB real/958MB virtual. Second on the list was the SystemUIServer with 538MB real/880MB virtual. After that, things dropped off significantly with other open (though not being actively used) programs like Word, Entourage, Preview, etc. using well under 100MB each of real memory and 500MB or less of virtual memory. Out of my 2GB RAM, about 1.3 GB was actively being used (wired and active), with 550MB inactive and 150 free. My VM size was 13.5 GB. I can see why boosting RAM makes a huge difference in performance!
This type of usage must be something specific to the Core Duo, because I have the same OS (10.5) running on my Pismo powerbook (with 1GB RAM) and its numbers are paltry by comparison: highest user: Mozilla, at 160MB/477MB, followed by the system (kernal task) at 63MB/775MB (real/virtual). Out of the 1 GB, only 200MB was active(120MB)/wired(75MB), with 470MB inactive, and 350MB free. My VM was only 4.2GB (with basically all the same applications active: the chief difference being Mozilla instead of Safari as the browser). It should be noted that in both cases Tabbed browsing is being used with about 7 tabs in each browser (actually, 7 tabs in Safari, 10 in Mozilla).
For those "in the know", does this seem normal? And is the key difference here the way the Core Duo processor handles memory? Or is it also just a matter of the more memory available, the more it will use? (Something is definitely different, though because the CD is using about 60% of actual RAM (wired/active), whereas the Pismo is only using about 20%).

    Hello John61254,
i do find the Safari memory usage a bit large on your message, how many safari windows/tabs is opened? long history since you last started safari?
How much is safari taking memory just after starting it? I surfed quite long on this (core duo 17" with 1,5Gb memory) and i have >140mb real and 380 virtual on safari.
You might want to try reset caches with example Onyx
Another thing, do you have any addons/plugins on safari installed wich could be PPC based( on second tought these might not run unless you start safari with rosetta ).
On VM size i wouldnt be worried about, its IMHO running quite smoothly for the user.

  • Maverick OSX: Memory use is increasing without running programs

I noticed that under Mavericks, my iMac is getting slower and slower. So I opened the Activiy Monitor to see what was going on. It appears that the amount of used Memory is increasing without that I even run 1 single program. While writing this post, my 16 GB of ram is already used till 4.20 GB. That number is growing while looking at it till it will reach the 15 GB used after which all I can do, is restart the Mac.
So it's impossible to use the Mac under Mavericks rigght now. I made a new partition on the HD and installed Mountain Lion so I can do at least some work, but I really hope this problem will be fixed in an update.

Thanks for the screenshot. That looks alright at the moment with just ¼ of your RAM used. Though I expect this is because you have just booted into 10.9 and not let it 'warm up' yet.
kernel task is a general memory environment that will accumulate memory with every new loading of external devices and software extensions. Though it should also release memory when required.
Following is some general information on kernel task by Topher Kessler,
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20091848-263/kernel-task-taking-up-ram-in-o s-x/
Generally every new upgrade uses more total RAM, just as every new version of Safari, for example, is a larger download than the previous version. It seems a rule that increased software upgrades are proportional to increased memory demand.
Given this rule, you can then apply to it, 'the law of dimishing returns' which leads to a point where the hardware, a fixed quantity, becomes constrained with additional software upgrades (the variable) such that no benefit is achieved.  But this is theory.
Practically, as you have two OS's available, you can conduct dual exercises with usage of same applications over same time, and record the memory impact from Activity Monitor in both 10.7 and 10.9 and from there you may see where the newer OS is failing you. There may be a particular application that stands out as being RAM hungry in 10.9 but stretch its legs and see if any one thing is as fault.. Some people have found Safari to be a memory hog. You certainly have a lot of RAM to play with, so something must be consuming it. So if you have time to waste exploring this, you will get a result for sure.

  • Mavericks Safari form fill from keychain broken

I upgraded to Mavericks yesterday on one of my machines, and I think Safari form fill from keychain is broken.
I have 2 Google accounts that I use regularly. Lets call them accounts GA and GB.
When I attempt to sign into Google from Lion Safari, I get given the choice of which login to use (presumably because Google has stored the memory of GA and GB in a cookie), and then I get asked for the password for the one I have chosen (even though I am sure the password for both is stored in the keychain).
When I attempt to sign in from Mavericks Safari, I get the same first question as to which login I want, and then the screen for the one I have chosen. This time the password has been autofilled from the keychain, HOWEVER, no matter which login I have chosen, GA or GB, and no matter which account name is displayed GA or GB, safari always sends the details for account GA to google. I have no way of logging into account GB, and worse, I might think I have logged into account GB, but I am actually logged into account GA. Dangerous indeed if this were a bank login!
I may be able to get back to logging into GB if I removed google's cookies that have stored memories of GA and GB, but I have not tried this yet.
Anyone else seeing a problem like this?

Probably too late for you, but in case anyone else stumbles on this topic...
    There are 2 approaches.
1- Copy the Form Values file over to the new computer.  It is encrypted with a password in the user keychain, so you will have to copy that keychain over.  If you dont want that keychain, then you would have to get just the safari autofill forms password out of the keychain, and change the new keychain safari value to match.
2- Decrypt the values, and use them for reference until it all gets populated back in naturally.

  • I am unable to access my Bank website since upgrading to Mavericks (Safari 7)

I am unable to access my Bank website since upgrading to Mavericks (Safari 7)
I get the following error message in Safari before I even have the opportunity to
    connect to my bank's website.
It works fine in Firefox and Chrome.
    Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://www.tdbank.com/" on this server.
    Reference #18.a555ee3f.1382720248.13b74953

I experienced the same problem where by I could not log into my Nationwide Bank account when I had upgraded Safari to the latest Version before Mavericks 6.1.0 on OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I believe.
I already had Trusteer Rapport installed as recommended by banks.
Some Banks worked but Nationwide skipped the log in page and kept taking me to a page about Cookies telling me I needed to enable them but they were enabled. I just could not get into the Log In Page. Incidentally the Nationwides Cookies screen shot is of an out of date Cookies setting page - it is now under privacy in Safari preferences.
I then installed Rapport again when it popped up as an option and bingo I could get to the Log In page.
Took the plunge and upgraded last evening to Mavericks
Same probelm occured cannot Log In to Nationwide.
I have just stopped Trusteer Rapport and thank goodness I can get into Log On again.
However when I logged out and tried to open another site Safari crashed with the following error message
"safari quite unexpectedly while using trf.dylib plug-in"
Chose Reopen and safari opened Ok
I googled the message and that got me here - seems it is Trusteer Rapport
So someone needs to sort this out I guess Trusteer I guess?
    Hope this is helpful
    Cheers

  • Photoshop CC Memory Hog ...

Photoshop CC is a Memory Hog  ... I have 4GB and PS CC is the only thing open my ram drops to like 895mb free...

Definitely more RAM would be ideal -- but only useful with a 64-bit OS.   You can adjust the amount of memory the OS will allow PS to use in Photoshop Preferences > Performance if you need to work with the system config you have and need ram allocation change to help with performance problems with PS or other applications.
You might find this article of interest (written for CS6 but should generally apply for CC).

  • ML, Memory hog?

OK, I'm strongly considering the low end MBP Retina, my dilemma is 8 vs 16gb memory especially since they can't be upgraded later. I'll be doing some photo & video editing on an enthusiats level, not pro or particularly savvy amateur BUT, it appears Mountain Lion is a memory hog.
    Any feedback or suggestions appreciated

Lion was a pretty big memory hog. I would highly recommend it especially if you are planning on keeping the machine for more than 2-3 years as at that point the machine will probably be falling behind because newer operating systems will most definitely require more ram than current ones. Lion will load as much as it can into ram so I would highly suggest it!

  • CS2 Memory Hog

Is it just me or is Photoshop CS2, including the Bridge, a terrible memory hog!!

"384MB of RAM to run any one creative application with Adobe® Bridge
    and Version Cue® Workspace
Additional RAM required to run multiple applications simultaneously
    (512MB to 1GB recommended) "
By the way, are you using the Photoshop SDK, a programmer tool? If so,
please focus the question so the people here know how you are using
it. If you aren't using the Photoshop SDK, I recommend asking in the
general Photoshop (Windows or Mac) forum.
On the list of forums in http://www.adobe.com/support/forums.html the
general Photoshop section, for Windows or Macintosh, is called "Adobe
Photoshop® & Adobe ImageReady®", 5 lines up from Photoshop SDK.

i configured the mouse to swipe between pages one of the best basic features from apple
and now OS x mavericks kills it. and i use force to stop a lot with this new update.
and Mavericks is going to feel more like Microsoft windows slow, annoying, no fun to work with

I have the exact same problem. The mystery is that it happens everytime on my iMac and does not happen on my MacBook Air.  Both are running the same versions of everything.
