Max_luns in OEL 5.8, uek

Trying to set max_luns parameter on OEL 5.8, uek. Added "options scsi_mod max_luns=4096" into /etc/modprobe.conf, run mkinitrd, reboot. But systool -v -m scsi_mod shows the same numbers.
# systool -v -m scsi_mod
Module = "scsi_mod"
Parameters:
default_dev_flags = "0"
inq_timeout = "20"
max_luns = "512"
max_report_luns = "511"
scan = "async"
scsi_logging_level = "0"
# uname -a
Linux vld-bl15 2.6.32-300.11.1.el5uek. What I'm doing wrong?

http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html/Cluster_Administration/s1-max-luns-CA.html
It is not necessary to configure max_luns in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases prior to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, if RAID storage in a cluster presents multiple LUNs, it is necessary to enable access to those LUNs by configuring max_luns (or max_scsi_luns for 2.4 kernels) in the /etc/modprobe.conf file of each node. In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, cluster nodes detect multiple LUNs without intervention required; it is not necessary to configure max_luns to detect multiple LUNs.
However, the following still works, if you really need to change it:
Edit /etc/grub.conf and add the following to your kernel boot parameter, for instance:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32...... rhgb quiet scsi_mod.max_luns=4096

  • OEL 5.7 UEK will NOT boot on OVM 3.0.3

I just installed Oracle VM 3.0.3, and everything seems fine. I created my first VM, using an OEL 5.7 to create an HVM.
The installation seemed okay, but the UEK kernel will NOT boot after the install. The 2.6.18 kernel boots just fine, however. If I try to boot the UEK kernel, it fails to find any volume group at all. Any ideas what's wrong? Surely, this isn't supposed to happen.
Here's my grub.conf, if that matters:
    # grub.conf generated by anaconda
    # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file

The installation seemed okay, but the UEK kernel will NOT boot after the install. Yes, this is a known issue. Oracle Linux 5 uses the Red Hat compatible kernel during the installation, but boots into the UEK. The RHEL kernel uses the emulated drivers as it is not Xen aware, while the UEK is a paravirt_ops kernel. However, once it sees the Xen drivers, it crashes because it has no Xen drivers in the initrd built by the installer.
This is a known Oracle Linux HVM guest issue: http://oss.oracle.com/ol5/docs/RELEASE-NOTES-U7-en.html#known_issues
It's also one of the reasons why I recommend installing Oracle Linux as a PVM guest (not just for all the performance benefits you get from PVM).
So, to boot OL5U7, you pass xen_emul_unplug=never on the kernel boot line, which allows the machine to boot with the emulated devices, i.e. they are not unplugged.
Then, edit /etc/modprobe.conf to replace the emulated devices with xen-netfront and xen-blkfront:
    alias eth0 xen-netfront
    alias scsi_hostadapter xen-blkfrontThen, rebuild initrd:
    # mkinitrd -f -v --builtin=ehci-hcd --builtin=ohci-hcd --builtin=uhci-hcd /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`And reboot. You may get kudzu renaming ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-eth0.bak on reboot, because it detects "new" hardware. If so, just rename it back and it should be fine.

    3. Server got hang and restarted many times
    4. Disk IO Performance is very slow
(hdparm -t result 70MB/secs earlier it was 130MB/secs with RHEL32)
This issues we are facing with this SATA disk array on SAN DS-3400 connected via QLA2460 Qlogic 4G Fiber HBA Card.
We are not faced any issues before with RHEL32Bit OS on this same HW Setup, once we changed to OEL5.8 64
Please help us to fix this issue with SATA Disks on this OEL 5.8.

  • Second node cannot bring up clusterware stack

    Hi forum,
I have a two-node RAC in VirtualBox VMs. After booting the first node (regardless which of the two), the complete Clusterware stack is started successfully. When booting the other node, the Clusterware stack does not come up successfully. When I try to start components manually, there seems to be a circular dependency between CRS/CSSD and ASM.
    Configuration:
    OS: OEL 5.8, UEK
    Grid: 11.2
    Database: 11.2.0.1
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andreas

    Hi,
What is the error you have in the OHASD.log and CRSD.log. There are dependencies of the component from 11gR2.

    Hi Dude,
    Thank you for your response.
I didn't choose upgrade. I chose Fresh Installation.
Sorry for not giving background about the problem
The OEL 6.0 x32 was installed on a server with 64bit architecture, so the power of the server is not utilized well.
I want to completely replace the OEL 6.0 (32 bit) system with OEL 6.3 (64 bit)
Just I choose the mount point of /root and /boot and leave the all partitions with no formatting to save the old data
The above warning in the first post appears. How to avoid it?

for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?
    [no]
The memory manager driver (vmmemctl module) is used by VMware host software to
efficiently reclaim memory from a virtual machine.
If the driver is not available, VMware host software may instead need to swap
guest memory to disk, which may reduce performance.
The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
    independently of this feature.
If you want the memory management feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.

  • Upgrade from OEL 5.4 to OEL 5.5 . How does it work.

    Hi,
I am little new to Linux.
We are on OEL 5.4 with Oracle Applications on 11.5.10.2
We want to upgrade to 5.5 now.
Can you please tell me the steps involved in this?
    TIA.

The following might have your answer:
Upgrade OEL 5.4 to Oracle Linux OL 5.5 - success
Do you have specific reason why you want to upgrade to OEL5.5?
Btw, the product name has changed to Oracle Linux (OL 5.5)
Before you upgrade to OL5.5 and also consider to upgrade the kernel to UEK 5.5, I would recommend to check the Oracle e-business forum for to see if there are problems. http://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=3
Or better ask your Oracle support.

    1) add 1024x768 in Modes in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    2) add the parameter "resolution=1024x768" to the kernel line in grub.conf
    3) Add the parameter "video=1024x768" to the kernel line in grub.conf.
    So I tried all.

When you start the VirtualBox machine there is an appropriate option under the Devices menu:
After you select this the menu option, it will attach the build-in ISO disk image, which you can mount as cdrom:
    Then install the software:
In order for this to work you will most likely have to install:
    gcc
    kernel-devel-$(uname -r) or
    kernel-uek-devel-$(uname -r) package.
(you can ignore warnings about kernel-headers)
Please see the virtualbox documentation about further details. It is all desribed there.

  • Best OEL 6 kernel for guest VM

    Hello everyone,
I'd like your opinions on which kernel I should use when creating an Oracle Linux 6 guest PVM VM: the UEK or the vanillia one?
My problem is that I need to install an IBM software that faults with UEK but runs fine with the standard kernel.
I already have a 2-node RAC running on OVM 3.1.1 with the UEK kernel: my concerns are about stability and performances.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Alessandro

  • Oracleasm update-driver failed in OEL 6

    Hi ,
I have a problem with oracleasm update-driver command.
I have OEL 6 installed in my machine.
When I entered command : rpm -qa| grep oracleasm it is showing me the below output :
    oracleasm-support-2.1.5-1.el6.i686
But after that, when I issued command oracleasm update-driver , it shows me below error :
    Kernel:          2.6.32-71.el6.i686 i686
    Driver name:     oracleasm-2.6.32-71.el6.i686
Driver for kernel 2.6.32-71.el6.i686 does not exist
As a result of this my ASMLib driver is not Initializing properly. Below is the details of that :
    [root@abhishek]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure

This will configure the on-boot properties of the Oracle ASM library
driver. The following questions will determine whether the driver is

answer will keep that current value. Ctrl-C will abort.

Can anyone please help me to resolve this ?
    Thanks
    Abhishek

    Hi Dude,
Thanks very much for your detailed explanation.
I have successfully updated UEK kernel by following your mentioned steps.
But now I am facing another problem.
I have done upto steps below :
    yum install kernel-uek kernel-uek-devel kernel-uek-headers kernel-uek-firmware+
    *# reboot*
But when I am trying to enter into that kernel , it is showing dark screen with a arrow pointer .. I think the video driver is not updated for that kernel.
Let me elaborate the scenario :
When I boot my machine , it shows 2 options during boot :
    *1. Windows XP*
    *2. Other*
When I pressed enter into the Other it is showing 3 more options :
    *1. Oracle Linux Kernel - 2.6.32-100.34.1.el6uek.i686*
    *2. Oracle Linux Kernel - 2.6.32-131.0.15.el6.i686*
    *3. Oracle Linux Kernel - 2.6.32-71.el6.i686*
When I choose 2nd and 3rd option it is showing Gnome GUI properly , but when choosing 1st option it is not showing any Gnome GUI , Just a dark screen and an arrow pointer on that. I can move that pointer here and there over the blank screen. So it is understood that machine is not getting hanged , only display is not coming ( please verify whether my understanding is correct or not ).
Untill the GUI comes, I am not able to test the rest of the commands you gave. So will you please update the solution with detailed steps.
One more information i am pasting here. The output of lsmod command ( running from the kernel : 2.6.32-131.0.15.el6.i686 )

You seem to be experiencing a connection timeout. It can be all sorts of reasons. It might just work if you try again later. However, there is no reason to enable all the repositories. It will cause a lot of unnecessary processing and traffic. I suggest you restore the default repository configuration using the following command:
    su - root
    wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo \
    --output-document /etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-ol6.repo
    yum clean all
    yum makecache

How can I fix this or although rollback to old kernel ?The old kernel is still installed -- the upgrade just installs a new one as well. What's happened is that your root device line seems to have changed, though I'm unsure why. There appears to be a /dev/ missing from the root= parameter on the command-line.
Log into the Dom0 of your Oracle VM Server and start the guest manually and connect to the console using:
    # xm create -c /OVS/Repositories/<UUID>/VirtualMachines/<UUID>/vm.cfg You'll need to work out what the two <UUID> values are, though. The first one is the UUID of the repository that contains your Virtual Machine configuration file. The second is the UUID of the Virtual Machine itself. You can find the repository path by running df -h to see all the mounted repositories on your server. The VirtualMachine UUID is on the Info screen of the Virtual Machine under the "ID" field.
When you start the guest using the xm command, you'll be presented with the GRUB boot loader screen, which will allow you to chose the previous kernel. When the machine boots, check /boot/grub/grub.conf and ensure that the root= parameter is the same as the previous kernel lines. Thanks Avi for speed of light support (I'm surprised :) )
Everything as you say I was able to run my old kernel and ssh to machine but root= parameter is fine (I think).

I am having difficulty attempting to install VBox Guest Additions on my OEL 6.1 x64 system.
It seems to be similar to this recent thread:
Oracle Linux 6.1 - Kernel version and devel version mismatch
I have done the yum repo install of "http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo", but both "yum install kernel-uek-devel" and "yum install kernel-devel-2.6.32-100.34.1.el6uek.x86_64" fail with "No package available".
Note that the second package I mentioned above is the one appearing in the VBoxAdditions shell output as needing to be installed. Yet, it doesn't seem to exist.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.

After doing "wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum.ol6.repo" and placing the file in /etc/yum.repos.d/ , did you change "enabled=0" to "enabled=1" within the new yum config file?
