Try ermoving all of your known networks (in the Network System Preferences), apply it and see if you can operate correctly with only one known network.

  • EA4500 - MBP Problem 802.11N / 802.11A

    Hi Guys,
I've been using the EA4500 for almost a month now and I'm loving it. Fast & stable, but I noticed one problem. My Macbook Pro is not connecting via 802.11N but instead it is using the 802.11A.
    screencapture:
I tried trouble shooting this by using my other router Linksys WRTt310n and I noticed that my MBP is conencting to the 802.11n.  So basically it's not the an APPLE or MBP problem.
Is there any setting I should be checking out?
Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you very much mate! But can you please explain what  does WMM got to do with my connection problem with the 802.11N network?
Thank you very much again guys!

  • MBP problem connecting to wireless internet

I recently tried to get online using my Macbook Pro (Intel) and I was prompted for the password to access the wireless internet network which was unusual as it normally connected automatically every time. Once I had entered the correct password I was met with the pop up window "'There was an error connecting to the network 'Vlsise'" (Vlsise is the name of our home network). I think that this may have been due to recently downloading some updates the day before but I can't be sure.
I have an iMac (Intel) and PlayStation 3 which connect fine to the internet wirelessly but I've not gotten around to downloading the latest updates for the iMac in fear of it encountering the same problem as my MBP.
My laptop can connect via the ethernet cable but when I try to connect wirelessly I briefly see the IP Address 169.254.109.180 in the network settings window before the error message appears, if that is of any use.
The router I'm using is a 'Zyxel 660HW-T3' and has been great for the year that I've had it. It may also be worth pointing out that our provider 'Telefonica O2' upgraded our service last month but as the MBP is the only Mac that has a problem I can't really see this being related.
If anyone has a solution to my problem or any tips to try rectify the problem they would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

So I took my MBP to work to try their WPA2 password protected network and it connected no problem! I'm absolutely stumped on this one I think my last resort will be to re-install OSX and see if that works. If someone else has already tried this and it didn't work then please inform me so that I can save myself the hassle.

  • 2.93 MBP - Problems before I even opened the box.

Well. My new MBP arrived about 20 minutes ago. The shipping box was double taped on the top. I peeled the top layer off, and the tape below was slit, so the box was opened and then resealed. Fine...
I took out the box that houses the computer, and low and behold, there are two clear pieces of tape holding the box closed. You have to look closely: They aren't lined up perfectly.
Now my issue is: Why is this brand new machine from China resealed? Was this a defective machine that was repaired? Was this formerly a 2.8 machine that had the motherboard replaced to make it a 2.93?
I'm really frustrated, and angry. Before I open it, I may call Apple and ask for a refund. There's just too many concerns going on with these new MBPs to NOT be concerned about this.
Any thoughts on this crappy situation I'm in?

With international shipping, random packages within shipments are opened for Customs inspections, then re-sealed. I suspect this is what happened in your case.
If this was the case, then the inside box would not be be retaped with the same "security seal" that Apple uses on the inside box. FedEx shows no delays, and the machine shipped yesterday.
If I were to walk into the store with a double taped box, and ask for a refund, my guess is that they would claim it was already opened, and there was nothing they would do about it.
If you ordered a new machine, you got a new machine. Refurbished machines are repackaged and factory-sealed.
    Are they marked as refurbs?
There's no higher incidence of problems with this model than with any previous model. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, these forums are like the emergency room for Macs, and if you judged people by that, you'd think that most of the human population was sick or injured.
My first thought was that maybe they did some kind of modification or "fix" to the machine before sending it out.
Open the box, power up your MBP, and enjoy!
I wish I could. I just know that once I break the (second) seal, there is no gong back, and I have committed to 3 spending grand.

  • Al BT KB with MBP problem

I've had for quite sometime now my Aluminum BT KB connected to my June 2009 MBP. This laptop is also connected to a Apple 24" display with the newest Apple BT mouse.
The problem is when ever I want to do a Pram/Nvram reset by restarting the computer and holding down the "Option, Command, P,and R" key nothing happens. I have to actually open the laptop and do it that way.....What's wrong? or can it not be done with the BT KB?
    Thanks

Ugh. Apparently "messing with it" is still the answer. I decided to try the LinkSys router I was using before I bought the Time Capsule, and my iPhone connected with no problem.
I went through the steps again, and after rebooting my Time Capsule this time, I can connect again. The troubling thing it that this started with a power-off of my iPhone. No changes or installations, just a reset. Am I going to have to reboot my Time Capsule (which has no power switch, just a cord I have to unplug) every time I reboot my iPhone?

  • Confusing MBP problem...

    Hi everyone,
Sorry for the long story but... I recently started having a problem where the screen would start to flash and everything would freeze up other than the cursor, which would move, but wouldn't be able to do anything. I tried to reinstall 10.6, but either would get kernel panics, screen flashing, or wouldn't have anything on the screen. I then tried to install 10.4 that came with my MBP and upgrade into 10.6, and it would freeze about 15 minutes into the 10.6 installation, but would install 10.4 perfectly fine. I brought it to the Apple Store and they originally said dead memory, but continued to do tests and concluded it was a dead logic board. Out of curiosity when I got home, I installed 10.4, did all the system upgrades, and it seems to be running fine now for about 24 hours.
My questions are is it possible that it still has a dead logic board and I'm just getting lucky? Why would it not be able to run 10.6? I'd love to continue to run Snow Leopard (which ran for months before any problems) but a working Tiger computer is much better than a $1200 repair the Apple Store quoted me at...

Hi J, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

    Yes.

By any chance did you add/change RAM during that time period? Are you still running the original Apple-supplied RAM?
If it's a bad LB, time will certainly tell.
Did they check for the NVIDIA issue?

  • Having MBP Problems - A Must READ!!!

I hope this will encourage those of you who are still waiting and those who are thinking about sending their MBPs back to Apple. I had a spacebar problem and CompUSA said they would take it back and give me a replacement when they arrived. They arrived today. Let me say, the difference between my defective unit and this one goes way beyond the keyboard, but I just didn't realize it. The screen is clearer, no vignetting, the CD/DVD drive is more quiet and loads faster, the keyboard is straight and every key is in alignment, the fit and finish is superior, it is very quiet (I hear only the fan on the left side). I am amazed at the difference. The point is, if your unit is defective, there might be more wrong with it than you imagine, because you do not have a good one sitting beside it as a reference. I believe it with be worth your wait and all the grief. Good things come to those who wait!

I think if and when I send in my MBP for service at the Apple store, I'll take photos and make sure at least two employees acknowledge of the perfect cond'n of the computer and have them confirm this on the work order...
So that when I see scratches and scuffs, I can demand a replacement unit.

  • Major MBP problems

    Hi i have the 15"MBP.
Just recently my mbp is freezing constantly. I try to do the software update and click on an update, when its downloading the mbp freezes and i hear a clicking and spinning sound coming from the mac. Also when i try and download big files in safari, the same thing happens, i hear that sound and the mbp freezes. The only way i can fix it is to restart. When it happens, i get that spinning ball cursor thing, the dock freezes when i go onto it, and then finder freezes as well.
I tried the disk check thing in the disk utility and the disk check thing says its ok. I dont understand whats happened, but its really frustrating and i cant get any work done. It also happens when i try to download podcasts from the itunes store, whenever i try other software etc.
It basically happened when i tried to install the 10.4.8update and it happens more frequent after i installed the 10.4.8 update.
    thanks.

I've experienced the problems you mentioned with increasing frequency during the past week. I ran the Disk Utility several times and everything checked out -- I did the resets and other things people have suggested and the problem kept getting worse. Yesterday it reached a point where my machine froze 9/10 times when I attempted to open any application. I ran Disk Utility again and received the following message:
    ...Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 2416224 instead of 2416218)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
I don't know what this means exactly, but at least it's a confirmation of sorts that my computer basically does not work at all. I guess I'm taking it to the Apple store tomorrow-- I'll post a reply if they tell me anything about what is happening.
Does anyone know what this problem is/how it's happening?
My machine has always been ridiculously hot and makes strange and amazing grinding noises- I know little about computers but it seems quite logical the extreme heat is probably causing some damage?
    My major question:
I'm a law student and attempting to drag this evil computer with me through midterms-- I've been hesitant to take my computer into repairs because I need a laptop each day in class-- does Apple have any sort of loaner/replacement/rental program in its stores?

  • Sudden Multiple MBP problems

I have an early 2013 13inch Retina MBP with a 720GB SSD with Yosemite 10.10.1. It works very well. About a week ago my photos from Aperture that are copied to my iPhone 5 started to show random errors with photos missing and albums out of sequence. The MBP screensaver dropped the Aperture screensaver file and keeps reverting to the Apple default screensaver no matter how many times I reset the MBP screensaver. The disk utility has been run multiple times with this result
Invalid volume free block countFile system check exit code is 8.Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I have completed this task multiple times with no success.
Icons are now missing from the lower tray.
I have deleted the previews form Aperture which gives me about 100GB of free space.
y next step is to try re-installing Yosemite; but the internet connection drops off about every 5 minutes; even though other devices on the same router remain connected..
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

It is one wicked sub. Goes nicely with a pair of Tannoy CPA-5s to make a decent setup for "computer speakers"
Further testing has now showed that jumping hard on the floor near the G5 slightly shakes the desk, computer etc & recreates the problem! Somewhere there must be a dodgey connection...
I have the G5 on the floor with the two smaller FW800 disks stacked on top of it, and the 1TB disk sits on the floor beside the G5. I think some new firewire 800 cables could be in order, along with fitting the silly gold spikes to the subwoofer to try and isolate it better from the floor.
FW800 connectors don't seem to make such a tight & secure connection as FW400 ones - you don't have to pull very hard at all to disconnect them - it's a pity there's not a locking or screw-together version!
Luckily, my problems haven't so far resulted in any data loss, just plenty of annoyance & far more reboots than my G5 is used to.

  • MBP problems

I bought a MBP 13"/2.8/2x2GB/750/SD/ITP earlier this year (Jan 2012) so I have owned mine for less than a year.
Starting September, I have been experiencing automatic shutdowns and extreme slowness so I took it to a local ASP and they said the HDD died.  There were still problems (it was still slow, my iPhoto keep crashing, and my photos can't be shared without me force quitting and restarting iPhoto a few times) so I took it back to the ASP.  Now, they say the motherboard needs to be replaced.
I expect my MBP to be built to last and I was disappointed with the quality.  My friend's 3-years old MBP is still going strong so I am not sure if it was me or if the quality degraded.  I mostly used iPhoto to edit my photos so I can't understand why my MBP is dying so quickly.
Did I get a "lemon"?  That would be the least expected since I thought I bought an "Apple".  At least, my MBP is still under warranty.

Make sure you purchase Apple Care before your 1 year warranty runs out. It will extend the warranty 2 more years. It's not too pricey for what you get.
Things happen to electronics. My MacBook Pro is 4 years old now and going strong. Mac Pro...5 years. G4 Tower..12 years. Guess I got lucky!

Agreed. Mine at least says Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China. Since they are actually manufactured by Asus (who I do not believe has a Northern Ireland facility) I think it would be unlikely they are assembled anywhere other than China.

  • Early 2011 Mac Book Pro (MBP) problem with sporadic AMD GPU automated switching system

I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro (MBP) - specs are listed below. I have read online about other 2011s having an automatic shutdown problem & sporadic failure re the graphics AMD Radeon HD 6490M GPU automated switching system (among other problems with this "innovation" by Apple). I am having this problem: Shuts down by itself. Restarts - in the middle of the restart shuts down again. Fans are operating just fine. The problem has occurred if a video is playing, if I try to edit a video. It has occurred while using Skype (if the other party puts on their video camera), Firefox & Safari & Google Chrome. It has occurred even if I was working in Word if I was connected to the internet. I am working in a developing country and I have done a PRAM SMC Disk Utility Repair disk had a diagnostic run which showed no problems, etc. There is no temporary fix. Apple now hear this: This is going to morph into a logic board problem and you still haven't done anything about it??? This is an APPLE defect and I am very disappointed in Apple not acknowledging this defect and fixing the problem or issuing notification of a recall. I am outside of Apple Care and I have never had a mac give trouble until the 5 year mark. A 2GB RAM white iMac I gave my Mom is still operating perfectly! I am in the middle of a  climate change mitigation project and a I cannot finish my work due to this problem and I cannot afford to pay for another MBP $2400 doorstop. What is going on here? Steve dies so there is no one to put the fear of God in anyone at Apple anymore and now no one cares  about customer service? Where is the product recall? I have been a loyal Apple customer since 1983. Yes, 1983. DO SOMETHING NOW APPLE & NOTIFY US OF IT - We all registered our computers on YOUR website so you know who we are. Has anyone filed a class action yet?

I had a 13" mid-2012 that had three logic boards fail in less than a year of purchase. My symptoms were it would freeze while using it or after it was put to sleep. When it froze while being used, it would flash pixels in groups in different colors and would become unresponsive to everything but forcing it to shut down. If it froze while sleeping, it wouldn't wake up and it would get extremely hot to the touch. Apple covered the repairs every time but they sent me receipts and each time, it was a $480 logic board plus labor so it would cost about $530 overall. It sounds to me it's your hard drive because I also experienced two hard drive failures. First time was from an accidental drop. I would get a loading bar on startup and once it finished, it would shut down. I couldn't boot into recovery mode at or do anything. But before that would happen, I would get an error in disk utility after performing a disk repair saying it couldn't repair the disk and to back up as much data as I could. Luckily I have the Time Capsule so my data was always safe.

  • MBP Problems! ~ None here ~

    MBP owners and prospective owners,
Like many of you I have been reading about all the issues posted on these boards about the MBP. Some of the comments and questions are laughable. Having said that I'm sure most of these are real concerns and problems.
I've had my MBP for just over two weeks and have been using it constantly. I put it in sleep mode, travel with it, surf...all the things you would expect to do with a laptop. I have had no issues whatsoever with the MBP. Time will tell, but so far so good.
If you're thinking of buying one don't despair. There are many more of us who haven't had any issues with our MBP.
    ~Steve

My point is many do not have any issues
To be honest I don't agree. While the "issue" may be easily fixable or dealt with, or even it's a case of an incorrect expectation, that does not mean it isn't an issue. Even more so with new member and/or first time posters where a certain amount of courage is needed to make that post in front a large "audience". Surely for them to do that there must be something that needs addressing.
Sure some post make you giggle or roll your eyes but to marginalise it as such is not right.
but there seems to be a rift of resentment, if-you-will, over the MBP
    How'd you figure that one?
Having said that I do believe people cause some of their own problems and place the blame on the manufacture, third party, whomever, or are simply expecting too much, etc.
Well sure… but isn't this a nice place to set them straight on that? or would you prefer them to have a rant (assuming it's a rant they're having) elsewhere?
There have been recent suggestions posted on how to deal with Apple Care. 'Don't yell, remain calm, explain the issue carefully, professionally, etc.'
I gather you're referring to my post to MissEm? Have you considered that dealing with AppleCare can be just as important, and sometimes even more so, than coming here to identify the issue in the first place. Apple sells a warranty with your computer as well as AppleCare extended warranty so getting the most of that is as important as your logic board working right.
Additionally, most people don't know how to talk to technical support phone agents and how to get them to respond in the way that you want. I don't supposed you'd be skilled enough to have AppleCare offer, this is without asking for, a new MBP 2.16GHz (the last model with 2GB RAM) as a replacement for a 3 year old PowerBook G4 (that had 1GB RAM) over what was initially a confusion over the PB's AppleCare coverage.
Is this type of experience as valuable in instances as being able to identify the source of a kernel panic?
Rants, vague inquiries and complaints are not productive
For you maybe. Does the fact that you find that many of those posters end up after their thread feeling better about their situation, or being able to deal with it, or better still, being able to resolve it matter to you? Some of these "ranters" do end up constantly praising Apple and these Discussions so they do have value in their own way.
Sure there are plenty that need to learn some manners and have some respect for others but often comes through interacting in these Discussions.
I enjoy reading these forums for those reasons
So continue to do that. These discussions aren't only for you and the "purists" among us so let other get what they want too. There's plenty of room here for all of us. A lack of tolerance of the needs of other is what you get from the Windows forums around and I'd hate for these to go that way.
For some reason the expectation is it works flawlessly
That's because Apple presents themselve that way or have you missed all those Mac/PC ads? I have to say, there are times that even I like to slap the Mac guy about.
The reality is, its not perfect
And you might like to see it from the perception of other and not just your own.
    Just my opinion
    And this is just mine.

  • Windows 7 install problems: MBP problem?

I cannot mount the Windows 7 (Home Premium 64bit) installer DVD no matter what I do on my new (recvd today) MBP.
The disk mounts fine on my Mac Pro. I also tried the Windows 7 Ultimate DVD I used to install windows on the Mac Pro using Bootcamp and it also refuses to mount. The MBP spits out both of the DVD in disgust (I have some sympathy for that but still...). No. I dont try to insert both at once...
I tried creating an ISO copy of the installer DVD on the pro and then burning the ISO using the MBPs Superdrive. This WILL mount but Boocamp assistant does not recognise it. GAH!
I tried remote disk sharing. Again, the disk mounts fine on the Pro and is shared/mounted on the MBP... but once again Bootcamp assistant refuses to recognise it.
There is something odd about all this and I have ran out of ideas for now... any pointers, suggestions, etc... gratefully received!
This is a new MBP 15", newly rcvd. I have ran update. Pulled out hair. Considered sacrificing a cat. And given up... for now.

Yes I think you are right. I hate computers. And emergent behaviour. My cats are cool tho' ;-)
I have booked a 'genius' session - will be interesting. I do wonder how they deal with folk - I imagine I am an edge case. A bloke with over 20 yrs experience in IT. Probably not a typical Mac user!
Meanwhile I am contemplating alternative approaches. My assumption is that bootcamp manages (or at least attempts) a non-destructive repartitioning of the disk and then reboots to enable the Windows installer to load up. If that is the case then some other partitioning tool could be used to create a new partition. A reboot from the installer DVD should then get me rolling. I have the bootcamp tools & drivers on another DVD ready... so good to go?
My other thought is to set up a thunderbolt based external disk and see of that would work.... but that would be ££££ expensive and Windows 7 may not boot up over thunderbolt. Will have google it I suppose.

  • Mid 2009 13" MBP PROBLEMS (customer service suggestions)

i have been trying very patiently but persistently to find out what has been going on with a recent repair and i don't feel like i am getting good answers so i am hoping for some advice related to Apple Customer Service. right now i feel like i am being kept in the dark by apple tech as to what is going on with my machine.
i have had the above computer since buying it almost 3 years ago and have always had to struggle with poor battery life (1 1/2 - 2 hours MAX) when only surfing on Safari and i have always gotten consistent beachball hangs upon opening Safari or Pages etcetera. at some point about a year and a half into owning it i ran a test with NOTHING ON at all and i got something shy of 3 1/2 hours. i've also had the usual issues with both the computer and the power pack being /extremely/ hot and with the fan noise being extremely loud.
since i am a returning mac user - and bought the laptop in order to convert the office fully over to mac OS - i did not get a chance to find the time to address these questions with apple until about a year into owning the machine.
the computer is now in the shop with a service battery alert and the genius bar (based upon my description of complaints) ran a set of tests and concluded they needed to replace the battery and the motherboard. based upon my extensive explanation of the persistent problems (and my pleas to take some time with the machine) they then apparently ran extensive tests after these two replacements and concluded that the computer was still failing.
so at this point it was sent off to a local facility in texas.
late last week i received an email from this facility indicating that they found no problems and asking for additional information. upon calling the phone number i was told that the genius bar manager discussed the situation with the facility and that they would be running further tests at the facility. two days later i received an email from the genius bar indicating that the computer was back at the genius bar and eveything was fine and it was ready for pickup.
at this point - and after having an extensive discussion with the genius bar on the phone - i have not been given any hard information as to why it was sent off or why it was sent back with no repair. however, i have been repeatedly told that the computer should be getting 5 - 6 hours of battery life (and ostensibly no beachball hangs) /if/ i don't use ChronoSync or Carbon Copy Cloner and that this was tested while running:
    1. iTunes with Visualizer
    2. Pages (with apparently no activity)
    3. Activity Monitor
    4. Safari (with a constant refresh)
    5. Screen at 50%
i am concerned that i am going to get this computer back and i will again have 1 1/2 hours of battery life doing something normal like surfing Safari as i am concerned that the restrictions that they are placing on my usage are un-realistic for a pro level computer.
however, every time i try and discusss this with the genius bar i end up in a discussion about why they don't have any record or my bringing it in within the first year (i guess they say this since i say i have always had this problem but i haven't had the /time/ to troubleshoot this type of problem). i mean, i have always just taken the "path of least resistance" and dragged the power cord with me if i move from one room to another one with the machine. ALSO, mac tech is now telling me that the fact that i have a current version of Adobe Creative Suites loaded (i bought it at the mac store for $1200 but i only /ever/ use it on the mac pro) may be reason enough for poor battery life. if i try to explain that i am not using this software on the machine it goes nowhere.
in short, i don't feel like this computer has ever performed adequately but every time i try and address this i feel like i am either getting questioned about what i am saying or i am being provided an unrealistic set of restrictions for use with this machine.
does anyone have any suggestions for a good way to address this with the Mac Customer Assistance person who has been helping me shortly after the computer went to the genius bar? also, is there some set of terms or words or is there a technical report or something that i can ask for that will let me get some more insight into what they have tested, why it failed and then failed again and then apparently passed?
    TIA

    hi grant. thank you.
checking back in here. this has been a /very/ frustrating issue. it has also been technically much more complicated than i would have ever imagined. i have a 2006 mac pro with almost the same amount of ram in it (actually 13 GB) and i don't have any of these performance type issues.
anyway, does this answer apply as well if i neglected to mention that i bought 8 GB of ram to put in the machine about a year or a year and a half after buying it when i finally got a moment to deal with this? i just got so frustrated wasting all my time i figured it would be more cost effective for me to max out the ram. i mean, if i have the /MAX/ 8 gb of ram /already/ in the machine is there something specific to look for with respect to this article?
i guess i am having a really, really, really hard time imagining that my rather limited use of the laptop - when i do almost ALL of my production work on the desktop - is somehow too taxing for a circa 2010 pro line mac laptop with the maximum of 8 gb of ram put into it. i work so slowly and in such a limited manner on this laptop that i am talking about really, really mundane kind of tasks here. i guess the bottom line is that if i see one particular piece of software chewing up a lot of my 8 gigs then i know i can't run this software and get any decent performance?
ALSO - can you please tell me the best way to test all of this if i am looking to document it?
    1. I fully charge the batter, DELETE any items listed in the startup items under users, shut down the computer, start up the computer and then turn on Safari and let the computer run on the desk without power and see how long a battery life i get?
    2. then i turn on Pages and see if i get a beachball hang?
    3. can i run some kind of benchmark test on my end?
    4. other ???
    THANKS
