MDMP unicode conversion - Vocabulary maintenace

Hello,
W have upgraded 4.5B MDMP system to ECC4 EHP4 and now we are in process of unicode conversion.
please advice on as specified below.
In SPUMG Scan process, we have completed the following scans:
a) Tables without language Info
b) Tables with Ambiguous language Info
c) Indx Analysis
For maintaining vocabulary  we have implemented notes 756534 &  756535, 871541. and Tables with language are also scanned. While handling vocabulary the system has displays 539158 with duplicates and 189314 when duplicates are discarded, which doesnot assigened any languages. We have 9 acive languages.
As per Unicode conversion document i left out with only 2 more option a) HInt management b) Manual assignment
How to handle this? is this a normal situation or any correction can be done?
Thanks and Regards
Vinay

Hi Vinay,
This Thread belongs to the Unicode forum:
Internationalization and Unicode
In my opinion one of the best and most efficient possibility to reduce the number of words
is to make use of hints. Please follow the  Unicode Conversion Guide and SAP note 1034188.
Application colleagues should be contacted in order to find proper hints.
Please also note that report umg_vocabulary_statistic or um4_vocabulary_statistic is the best tool to evaluate tables for hint processing.
And the rest of the vocab, which can not be assigned by the hints method or by the SAP notes you mentioned, need to be assigned by native speakers (manual effort !).
As you can see, SPUMG is NOT just a tool to be executed by Basis staff.
It needs in deed collaboration between Basis, Application and native speakers.
And it should be clear that the duration of the scans can be quite high - therefore a trial & error approach will take time (especially for large systems).

  • MDMP UNICODE CONVERSION- Global fall back code page.

    Hello ,
Im doing MDMP unicode conversion. In that SPUMG settings has Global fall backup code bage.
What is exactly Global fall back code page and its uses?.
Im using 1160 has Global fall back code page in SPUMG? will there be any effect?
    Thanks and Regards
    Vinay

    Hello Vinay,
Please have a look at the Unicode conversion Guide:
    Excerpt:
"Whenever there is no information to determine the correct code page, R3load uses the Global Fallback Code Page (GFBCP) for the conversion. Its default value is the code page which corresponds to the logon language EN, or else 1100. This is a global setting for all tables."
This basically means you should select the code page used by the majority of the users / data .
If you use 1160, then the majority of users should be based on Latin-1 (Western European code page).

  • MDMP Unicode Conversion problem during ECC upgrade

    hi Experts,
I met a problem when upgrade from 4.6c to ecc 6.
in 4.6c, some key users made some chinese written entries in table field while he/she was logon as English, so, the language field in this entry is "EN" although the actual language was written by chinese, after upgrade to ECC6, we found the chinese words became messy code, maybe it was due to the chinese were encoded by english codepage during conversion, my question is, how can I avoid this? I really don't want this happen in our PRD upgrade.
The second question is: if a field contains both chinese and english, then, which language should it be assigned? english or chinese? I'm afraid if we assign this word as "EN" in vocabulary, then, after upgrade, the chinese part will be messy code.
Thank you for your kind suggestions.
    Freshman

    Hi,
you can either use transaction SUMG (manually) to repair the entries ( you have to add the according table - please check unicode conversion guide for details) or you need to change the language key in the table to Chinese if you want the Unicode conversion to convert the data correctly.
To your second question: If the English texts are restricted to US7ASCII characters ("normal" English without special characters) those texts containing Chinese and English words can (and must !)  be assigned to ZH, as US7ASCII characters are included in the Chinese code page.

  • MDMP Unicode Conversion: maintenance system vocabulary in.Excel possible?

We are currently converting from R/3 4.7 MDMP to ECC 6.0 EHP5 Unicode using CU&UC. We have native speakers to do the manual maintenance of the system vocabulary (assignment of words without language key to a language). However these native speakers are SAP "illiterates" and have no access to SAP. We would like to extract the system vocabulary to Excel, give it to the native speakers, they maíntain in Excel, and then we upload the Excel into SAP. Extracting the vocabulary is easy, since there is an ALV grid. Is there a way to upload the Excel to SAP? Thank you very much.

    Hi,
the down- and upload scenario via spreadsheet is not forseen in SPUMG.
I know customers who maintain the vocabulary with automatic and semi-automatic procedures and then verify the assigned languages via spreadsheet download sent to native speakers. In this scenario, there should be only a few words, which are assigned wrongly and these can be corrected manually.
However even in this scenario customers have to take care that the code page used by e.g. excel fits to the assigned language. E.g. you need to do this on a local Windows (default code page local).
But maintaining the language in the spreadsheet and then uploading the result to spumg is not possible.

    Dear Experts,
Currently we upgrade our SAP system from 4.6B NU to ECC6.0 UN.
in 4.6B system we had implemented Simple Chinese and French language package to the system. after upgrade to ECC6.0 no-unicode system. we perform a MDMP unicode conversion.currently system running with ECC6.0 unicode interface with language 1EFD. SUMG releated tasks had been finished. Chinese and French language checked OK in ECC6 UN system.
Our issue is. in the past time. some Spanish local end user typing some spanish character in some master date field when they login in 4.6B GUI choice english as login language.these kind of spanish characters could not display correct in current unicode environment.
could you please given us some suggestion for how to fix this issue.
I also sent this message in the Netweaver administrator forums with below links.
Spanish display incorrect after unicode conversion

    Hello,
I doubt that the data shown by you in the link was caused by Spanish users logged on in EN.
I think this was rather caused by utf-8 data uploaded into the Non-Unicode system.
In this case, you need to repair the according texts manually, I do not know any automatic repair.

  • Combined upgrade and Unicode conversion for ECC5 MDMP system

    Hello,
We are planning to do Upgrade and Unicode conversion of ECC5 MDMP system to ECC6 EHP4 Unicode. We are adopting Combined upgrade and Unicode conversion strategy to minimise the downtime.
In source version ECC5 we are in support pack level 6. Should we need to update the support pack to any target version to start with CU&UC or we can start with ECC5 with SP 6 itself.
Since we cant afford more downtime for support pack update also, is it ok to start with upgrade and unicode conversion with current version.
    please advice.
    Regards
    Vinay

    Hello Vinay,
please note that as a prerequisite the Basis SP should be accurate for an MDMP conversion.
There is no MUST to have the latest Basis SP, but without you could have severe issues in SPUMG.
On the application side, there are in most cases no hard requirements on the SP level.

  • Unicode conversion with MDMP, Errors in various TC´s SAINT , SNOTE,

    Hallo All,
We perform CU&UC of R/3 4.6C sandbox system to the ERP 6.0 EHP5.
Currently the upgrade phase is completed and Unicode conversion should
be started (we are in the step "Additional Preparation Steps in NW 7.02
    non-UC" in the CU&UC guide).
In various transactions (PFCG - Generating of profiles, SPAM/SAINT ) we
received an error "SAP characters 00367 and 00065 are not unique in
character set 1180". As a workaround we temporarily deleted Polish
language (PL) in program RSCPINST and activated (so only codepage 1100
was active). Currently we have activated the Polish language again.
In the source 4.6C system TMB (created by System Copy from productive
system PMB) there was also the configuration in RSCPINST of more than 1
codepage (1100, 1401) and in TCPDB table 1180 codepage was configured
    (see attached pictures).
    Our question :
How is it possible to avoid this situation in upgrades of following
system (IMB, QMB, PMB)? Could this configuration cause any
    problems/inconsistencies during/after Unicode conversion export &
    import ?
    Regards Peter Gauer

    Hello Nils,
After upgrade, before unicode conversion we got the following error message in PFCG, SAINT,..
"SAP characters 00367 and 00065 are not unique in character set 1180"
I got the information from T-Systems that they excluded polish languages out of RSCINST,
then codepage 1100 was used, than T-Systems added polish language again to have the original situation.

  • MDMP: TWIN Upgrade + Unicode conversion

    Hello ,
We have adopted twin upgrade and unicode conversion method and at present we are converting the twin system to unicode conversion.
In Twin system we have completed SPUMG 7 scans. Whether i need to run UMG_TWIN_CREATE_TRANSPORT  now to save the results for twin preparation run or i need to perform this step after Additional preparatory step.
    Kindly suggest
    Regards
    Vinay

    Hi Vinay,
    Excerpt from the UCG:
    2.4 Final Preparation Steps
    2.4.1 SPUMG Updates
If there is a time difference between the scan and the database export, it may happen that a new table has been created or a Support Package has brought a new table with it. In such a case, the preconversion must be rerun right before the export is carried out to ensure that the data change is reflected in the Export Control Table.
    End excerpt
Hence this step is necessary in case of DB changes (e.g. new tables with or without  content).
Therefore if you have significant changes, I would recommend to create the twin transport after this step.
However this step has to be repeated in the PRD system as well (see TU&UC-Guide) to reflect the changes between Twin and PRD system. In order to minimize downtime, the differences between the two systems should be small.

  • LRAW data Conversion during Unicode Conversion

    Hi,
We have upgraded our 46C MDMP system to Unicode system.
After conversion we found that some of the tables with field of LRAW type are having conversion issue.
In 46C system, Russian data which enetered in the MS Cyrillic (Code page 1504), is converted to code page 1500 after unicode conversion.
We have not found any entries for this table in vocabulary, reprocess log or in SUMG.
For example table STXL. This table contains Purchase order text for the material.
Report HRUU_CONVERT_IN_UNICODE does not shows LRAW data field for conversion.
Can you suggest how LRAW data can be converted from 1500 to 1504 code page.
    Thanks and Regards
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,
STXL is a language dependent INDX type table. Hence SPUMG will not scan this one with the default settings.
Please have a look at the description of INDX type table handling in the Unicode conversion Guide.
In the Unicode system, you can use UMG_ADJUST_STXL for the conversion.
However please be aware of the restrictions:
Once you have decided about the code page and converted the object, this cannot be reverted !
Therefore it is highly recommended to check the display mode first and in addition test it extensively on a sandbox system !

  • Effort estimate (ABAP) during Unicode Conversion project

    Hi ,
I am working on a CU&UC (Combined Upgrade and Unicode Conversion) project from 46C to ECC6.
We are having 8 different codepages (MDMP SYSTEM) and around 10000 custom objects.
Does anyone have any experince in doing such kind of project ? I am looking at the effort estimate on technical side (ABAP) and functional side.
Any inputs of Technical effort in such a project with related number of codepages and custom objects will be useful (in man days & project duration).
    Thanks
    Dilip

    Hi Dilip,
the main effort from ABAP side seems to be testing of the new system and creating the Unicode vocabulary. You need test teams and test plans for all locations and for the vocabulary you need people for all your languages. ABAP coding itself is probably not your biggest problem. You have to switch your system to unicode and then check all your sources. This could be done by a report or transaction (check the documentation regarding the Migration). From my point of view this is the main effort you'll have, testing and building the vocabulary. How big this effort is depends on your system. I think six month are a good time frame for the whole project (I assume you migrate a landscape of 3 systems). Because I'm working in the Basis administration I could not tell you the exact man days, but I would estimate up to two weeks for the vocabulary per language. You should have the numbers for the system tests from previous upgrades.
The technical migration effort depends on your hardware and time requirements. If your system is big (TBytes) and your downtime is very limited it could be necessary to tune the migration by testing it several times. If your requirements are not that high, then a single test migration could be sufficient. I've done two bigger migrations with 2.5 and 3.5 TB in less than 24 hours but therefore you have to have fast hardware and you have to tune your process well. If you have a single huge table this could destroy all efforts reaching your time target, if for example the index build could not be done in less then your time target. If you have enough hardware resources and time to tune your migration you could reach almost any time (which makes sense - some hours).

  • Error while database export in package SAPDODS_33 (Unicode conversion)

    Hello,
I am performing Unicode conversion on an upgraded BI 7.0 system. This is running on AIX/DB2.
When I take database export for conversion, one package fails (SAPDODS_33) with error "The file system is full". In fact, df -k doesn't show that any file system is full.
I am taking the export to the following location: /db2/BWS/sapdata/EXPORT_DIR
There are 3 system-managed temporary tablespaces: PSAPTEMP, PSATEMP16 & SYSTOOLSTMPSPACE which were residing in /db2/BWS/saptemp1/NODE0000. This was getting full during the export. Now these temp.tablespaces have been relocated to a new file system of size 15GB.
But still the package SAPDODS_33 doesn't get exported. Could you please let me know how to solve this issue?

    Hi Sundar,
if the problem is due to a high temp space usage. The root cause is typically the
sort during export. If the table is large, the sort spills to temp.
You can avoid the sort by doing an unsorted export or tweak the DB2 optimizer to use the primary key to do the sort.
Before DB2 9, you can reduce the OVERHEAD tablespace parameter to zero. Return this value to its previous value after the successful export. This is a indirect hint to the optimizer that random IOs are cheap. This might not help.
With DB2 9, this should not happen, because the  DB2_OPT_MAX_TEMP_SIZE=10240 registry variable is set under DB2_WORKLOAD=SAP which limits the temp space usage to 10GB if possible. You can reduce this parameter further if necessary. Another problem could be that the optimizer has chosen the wrong temp space. The optimizer choses the temp space with the largest amount of pages (not size).

  • Combined Upgrade and Unicode conversion of Sap 4.6C to ECC6.0

    Hello all,
my project team intends to carry out a combined upgrade and unicode conversion of an SAP ERP 4.6C system with MDMP to ECC6.0 (no enhancement package). The system is running on Oracle 10.2.
In preparation for this upgrade, I have gone through the SAP notes 928729, 54801.
We need to get a rough estimate of the entire downtime so as to alert our end users. From the CU&UC documentation in 928729, I read up note 857081. However the program in this note cannot be used to estimate the downtime as my system is < SAP netweaver 6.20.
Is there any other SAP note or tool or program that I can use to estimate the downtime for the entire CU&UC? Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
Combined upgrade depend upon number of factors like database size, resources on the server and optimization. In order to get idea of how much downtime, it will take, I would suggest you to do combined upgrade and unicode conversion on sandbox system which should be the replica of your production system. And try to optimize it. From there you can get approx. downtime required.
Also, please read combined upgrade and unicode conversion guides on  http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap
    Thanks

  • Wrong text in ADRC and LFA1 table after Unicode conversion

    Hello,
We are doing MDMP to Unicode on SAP 4.7 system.
In post unicode activities,we had corrected the garbage characters in
    table ADRC
by converting to target langauage ZH using SUMG t-code.
Condition used for addind table ADRC in SUMG is LANGU ='1' and
    LANGU_CREA = 'EN'
But after converting and saving the data, most of the records have
    incorrect character in word.
and text field of search term/company name/city in table LFA1 are also
wrong in correspond field in table ADRC.
    Thanks
    Harshavardhan

    Hi Harshavardhan,
Assumption: You have Chinese entries in table ADRC with ADRC-LANGU_CREA = EN
Now you have to distinguish two problems:
    1) Chinese texts are stored in ADRC fields, which are NOT used for search help texts (most of the fields - e.g. ADRC-NAME1):
These texts can be handled in two ways:
    a) Change LANGU_CREA = EN to LANGU_CREA = ZH for these entries (e.g. where ADRC-COUNTRY = CN) before the Unicode conversion (by the way, I would not use ADRC-LANGU, since this is the communication language, which does not necessarily comply with the code page of the entry).
This needs to be done in a similar way as shown in z-reports described in  SAP Note 634839 ( although this specific fool-the-system case is not covered there - you have to adapt those examples)
    b) Use SUMG to repair the entries using language ZH (as you already did)
My favourite would be a), as this can be done before the conversion (Note that SUMG ineeds to be executed during downtime !)
    2) Chinese texts are stored in ADRC fields, which are used for search help texts (e.g. ADRC-MC_NAME1):
    a) If these entries were inserted / changed with logon language ZH, then point 1) applies
    b) If users logged on with logon language EN and created the entries, then most of these texts are destroyed already in Non-Unicode system. Then there is no automatic repair possible (at least point 1 does not work). Here my statement from before is valid:
Those entries need to be generated again - e.g. if you do a dummy change on the name.
According to my knowledge, this is a manual effort (either before or after the conversion) - but maybe it can be automized ...

  • R/3 Export & Import during Unicod Conversion via SOCKET Method

    Hi
We are in the process of upgrading our R/3 Enterprise to ECC 6.0. The size of the database is around 4 TeraBytes.
Can somebody help us with necessary documentation/ othe rinputs to handle R/3 Export & Import using SOCKET method?  FYI we referred the SAP given doucments on the same. Any particular DOs & DO NOTs would be highly appreciated.
    Thank You
    Sai

    Hi Rahul
regarding your 'Unicode doubt"' some ideas:
    1) The Upgrade Master Guide SAP ERP 6.0 and the Master Guide SAP ERP 6.0 include introductory information. Among other, these guides reference the SAP Service Marketplace-location http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap.
    2) In Unicode@SAP can you find several (content-mighty) FAQs
Conclusion from the FAQ: First of all your strategy needs to follow your busienss model (which we can not see from here):
Example. The "Upgrade to mySAP ERP 2005"-FAQ includes interesting remarks in section "DO CUSTOMERS NEED TO CONVERT TO A UNICODE-COMPLIANT ENVIRONMENT?"
"...The Unicode conversion depends on the customer situation....
... - If your organization runs a single code page system prior to the upgrade to mySAP ERP 2005, then the use of Unicode is not mandatory. ..... However, using Unicode is recommended if the system is deployed globally to facilitate interfaces and connections.
    - If your organization uses Multiple Display Multiple Processing (MDMP) .... the use of Unicode is mandatory for the mySAP ERP 2005 upgrade....."
In the Technical Unicode FAQ you read under "What are the advantages of Unicode ...", that "Proper usage of JAVA is only possible with Unicode systems (for example, ESS/MSS or interfaces to Enterprise Portal). ....
