Measuring speed, both Broadband and LAN

Hi,
Can someone please advise me of a reliable method of measuring the speed i'm getting on my broadband.
I've tried speedtest.net and thinkbroadband
Speedtest.net showed 94Mb/s with one PC connected to the gigabit port on the homehub when the BT man was here. Now the best I get is about 50, but normally about 25 with the same setup, and other computers on the network drop as low as 12.
For the LAN PCs, are there any recommended tools I can use to try and figure out what's causing the slowdown?
For the actual broadband speed, what should I be using to measure this?
Thanks
J

Hi,
Thanks for the replies,
Yes, i'm on the FTTP trial.
Here's my test results from the PC connected directly to the router at 100Mb/s earlier today.
Test1 comprises of two tests
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download Speed
57590 Kbps
0 Kbps
106417 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
> Download speedachieved during the test was - 57590 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-106417 Kbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -106417 Kbps
2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
Upload Speed
14759 Kbps
0 Kbps
15000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
>Upload speed achieved during the test was - 14759 Kbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 15000 Kbps
And here's one from just now. I guess we're in to peak time now.

  • DHCP on both Wifi and LAN ports?

Everything works well; Wifi clients (MAC only), AppleTV, USB Hub with Printer and 3 External disks etc...
I plug in my MacPro via a LAN Cable and it does not get a valid IP Address from the DHCP server.
Tried setting a fixed IP with all the proper config, nothing gives.
I am a tried and true IT professional with over 20 years, and can't figure this one out. Anyone else have this problem?

That certainly should work. The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) supports both wired clients (via the LAN ports) and wireless clients. All clients appear on the same subnet.
The MacPro has 2 Ethernet ports? Have you tried both of them? Check the Network preference pane to ensure that the one you are using is enabled.
Otherwise... have you tried using one of the other LAN ports? Have you tried a different Ethernet cable to eliminate the possibility of a defective cable?

  • Use both Airport and Lan!

Hi, I have a strange setup, but I hope you understand my problem.
Basically, I get all my internet over my Wi-Fi coming from a wireless box in another room, and a wired, network in my room. Is there a way, I can use both at the same time. By that, I mean. Can I use my Aiport connection for the internet, while, connected by LAN to my network.
    Thanks!
    James.

Yes you can. Basically all you need to do is to set your wired LAN connection to have a static IP address with no router address (if you use DHCP one will be provided which is not what you want) so that it doesn't attempt to use this adapter to go outside of your LAN address setting. You might also need to have no DNS server as well (I've not done this for a while and can't remember). Then for your wireless, just set it up normally.
Be aware that you need to have your wired adapter to have a higher priority than your wireless.

  • HSRP Config in WAN and LAN

    HI ALL
I have a scenario where I have to configure HSRP in both WAN and LAN side of a router.
    Kindly find the Attached Diagram.
In wan side the ISP has configured HSRP and they are using static route.
The static routes are: to reach 192.168.1.0/24 they forward to 10.10.10.4 and to reach 192.168.2.0 they forward to 10.20.20.4

action 2 cli command "conf t"
action 2 cli command "interface f0/1"
    action 3 cli command "shut"
    action 4 cli command "end"

  • DNS Registration for clients with WLAN and LAN adapters

I have read a number of articles and it seems that there are a number of people who have problems with DNS and workstations with both WLAN and LAN adapters. I haven't however found workable solutions.
    Workstation Connection Objective:
To enable DNS discovery and Ip connection to client workstations regardless of whether the client is using the WLAN or LAN. Enabling users to use either Wireless or LAN adapter adhoc. ie they dock their laptops at their desks, and undock to take their laptops
to meetings or consulations with peers. I need to be able to discover and connect to the workstations irrespective of the adapter being used at any time.
Most people seem to try to control which interface is used on the workstations, ie disable WLAN and only use LAN etc. Trying to disable interfaces isn't going to be feasible and its very inflexible.
I believe I can ensure that the workstations use the NICs in our preferred order:
    1. LAN
    2. WLAN - Our wireless network isn't as fast as the LAN.
By setting specific DHCP metric for the WLAN Router to be higher(ie 2) than the LAN(1). When the LAN isn't connected traffic will route via the WLAN adapter and when the LAN adapter is connected, its router metric will be lower and it will be the preferred
    gateway/route.
But how do I solve the DNS resolution for connection to that asset?
If I disable DHCP Server updates into DNS and allow secure updates from the client. It would be really good if DNS client behaved in the following manner
    1. The LAN adapter(referred to as primary ie LAN) with the lowest metric(ie 1) registers/auto updates DNS with the ip(both A and PTR). Any other Adapters don't register. - ie the WLAN
    2. The Laptop is undocked and the LAN adapter goes offline, the DNS Client then triggers a registration/auto updates its existing DNS entry with the ip from the next adapter(WLAN) with the next lowest gateway metric(2)...hence replacing the first ip registered.
    3. The laptop is docked again, and DNS Client triggers a registration/auto updates its existing DNS entry with the IP from the primary adapter(LAN), replacing the WLAN ip.
So there is only ever 1 ipaddress registered for a workstation and it will always be a valid address. Then I don't need to be concerned about whether the user has the wireless turned on and docked.
Being able to discover and communicate with all our workstations in our sites is crucial requirement....
    This microsoft article says, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc771255.aspx
Dynamic updates can be sent for any of the following reasons or events:
        * An IP address is added, removed, or modified in the TCP/IP properties configuration for any one of the installed network connections.
        * An IP address lease changes or renews with the DHCP server any one of the installed network connections. For example, when the computer is started or if the ipconfig /renew command is used.
        * The ipconfig /registerdns command is used to manually force a refresh of the client name registration in DNS.
        * At startup time, when the computer is turned on.
        * A member server is promoted to a domain controller.
However from what I am reading, both adapters(LAN,WLAN), if configured to update DNS, will register their Ip addresses. Which leads to an invalid DNS entry if the laptop is undocked, as the IP for LAN adapter isn't removed.
Has anyone solved this problem for their organizations without
    1. Controlling which adapter is used - large management overhead
    2. Only allowing one adapter to register with DNS
        - If using LAN adapter for DNS, then anytime the user is using WLAN, their workstation doesn't have a valid DNS entry. Which also impacts Kerberos.
        - If using the WLAN, then we would have to invest a large amount of money into Wireless to provide the necessary bandwidth
    3. Setting GPO's to configure dns updates every 30mins on clients
        - Inconsistent results...which I think is sometimes a worse problem
    4. Defining separate DNS suffixes for their WLAN networks (I read some people did this)
        - This doesn't remove an invalid DNS entry ie the ip(LAN adapter) DNS entry if the laptop is undocked
        - It also creates problems with kerberos, if the host is registered under a separate DNS suffix from the Active Directory domain name

    Hi,
From my point of view, DNS can't be so smart.
As a workaround, please try the steps below,
Disable the DNS register of wireless adapter
Put "ipconfig /regiserdns" in a bat file
Everytime when the wired network is undocked, run the bat file.
If the wired network is docked, wired adapter will register the DNS record.
When the wired network is undocked, run the bat file, then the wireless adapter will register the DNS record.
If the wired network is docked again, wired adapter will register the DNS record automatically.
    Best Regards.

  • Can I use both Wifi and a Lan connection at the same time?

With me back in the dorms I have been limited to a slower connection than what I would like. Now we are able to use both Wifi and a Lan line so I was wondering to somewhat "double" my speed if there was any way to use both connections at the same time.
Now I know that you can have both plugged in at the same time, I guess what I'm asking is, is there a way that I could set programs to use one or the other? Or some kind of virtual desktop that is set to use the other connection or anything that would allow both be used at the same time.
Or am I just wishing for something that doesn't have any possible way to work?
    -nathan
    MacBook pro 2.16 C2D 2gb ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can use both at the same time, but not gor Internet access if that's what you're asking.
Now there is a thing called Link Aggregation, which combines a number of interfaces for speed/redundancy, but it really only works locally, and then only with ALL special equipment in the route, and most likely OSX Server involved.
    Sorry.

  • Both firefox and seamonkey download at 1/10 internet connection speed on Vista 64 bit

Both Seamonkey and Firefox connect at 1/10 the available download speed on 64 bit Vista. Scanned computer for malware. Reset firefox. Both internet explorer and chrome show 32 Mbps on speedtest.net. Dowload speed only 3 Mbps on seamonkey and firefox, so configuration or code problem

That is an excellent suggestion. I will try it out when I can get access to the computer again. It would show whether it is a computer problem or a Firefox problem. One thing I have noticed between the XP computer and the Vista computer is that the Vista computer jumps way high in throughput to 100 Mbps then drops way low then way up again. The average is 35 Mpps when using Chrome or Internet Explorer, but it is very uneven. The XP computer goes up to 48 Mbps and stays steady. It seems like there is something in Firefox where it can't keep up so it drops way off. The Vista computer is a 6 gig RAM quad core, so you would think it would always be faster.

  • WRT610N and LAN Transfer Speed

    Hi,
I both together a WRT610N and a network External HDD (My Book World Edition 2TB). Both have gigabit LAN (as well as my workstation). When I transfer files from Workstation HDD via Router to Network HDD the spped is maximum 16000 kbytes/s, 3 times slower than transfering via usb from an external disk or between internal workstation HDDs. I am quite stressed about it: is there any setup or this is it? In theory is at least frustrating.
I am looking for your support.
    Thanks.

16000 KB/s is 15.6 MB/s or 125 Mbit/s. That sounds pretty good for a NAS device and a normal workstation. If you want to know how fast the NAS with your workstation will work get a cross cable, set static IP addresses on both the NAS and the workstation and connect them directly. Then transfer data again. I guess it won't get any faster. The NAS and workstation are just not fast enough to handle more data.
Please remember, that a gigabit port on a device does not say anything about how fast it will transfer data. A "10/100/1000 Mbit/s ethernet port" in a data sheet only tells you that the ethernet port on the device is compatible with the technical specification of gigabit ethernet. It does not say how fast the device itself is and how fast it can handle data. Most consumer devices with 1000 Mbit/s ethernet port are absolutely not able to send or receive data at a rate close to 1000 Mbit/s. Often, they only get barely above the 100 Mbit/s. Only by replacing a port on a computer won't make the computer any faster...

  • I want to cancel my broadband and pay off my debt.

Recently I was shocked to discover that my direct debit had been altered to £73.50 a month! I was informed, upon contacting your billing people, that this was due to a number of phone calls I had made.  I have since discovered that the internet phone which was provided with the Option 3 Broadband package is no longer being produced and, therefore, my free evening and weekend calls no longer apply.  No warning was given or any information about this passed to me!  I have been informed that the onus was on ME to find this out!  I entered a contract and the terms of that contract were made clear to me and that contract has been broken as far as I am concerned.
Ever since I made the terrible mistake of signing up for BT Broadband, I have been treated appallingly and it is my wish to cancel my Broadband and no longer have anything to do with British Telecom or its services.  From day one my speeds were absolutely ridiculously slow and I had to go through the indignity of calling an Indian call centre who's staff would give the constant run around with the usual "Switch it on and off again" stupidity.  We are talking speeds of less than 1meg which was not what I was paying for.  I was even, on a few occasions where I said there was something wrong with the line, called a liar and had the phone slammed down on me.  Throughout this time I was charged £65 a month which was way over the agreed amount but I accepted this as I was told this was the charge for installation.
This £65 bill went on for longer than I care to remember (And certainly much longer than was necessary to pay off the installation charge!) so I contacted one of your staff who agreed that I was paying way more than I should have been and so the charge was reduced to £40 a month.  I was told that it would always be £40 a month and was assured that that was set in stone and would not change.  Once again your staff have lied to me.
I spoke to one of your staff recently, after they had contacted me enquiring about my cancellation of the direct debit (I had no choice as we have no income and are awaiting news on benefits and have a chronically ill baby son so any money we do manage to scrape together goes on train fairs to Great Ormond Street for his treatment.  I also have a chronic kidney condition which is potentially fatal and have had to give up on my own medical treatment, essentially condemning myself to death, as I can no longer afford to get to my own appointments.  I include this information to illustrate just how terrible our financial situation has become.) explaining that I wished to cancel my BT Broadband and phone package as I  am moving home and simply cannot afford to have a landline and internet package anymore.  I was advised that I should wait until I had further information on my move, as the moving in date had not been set yet, and call again where I would be able to cancel my package and come to an arrangement to pay off my debt (Which would be around the £140 mark - your staff are unable to give me a fixed sum as of yet) in instalments.
I called today to cancel my package on the date of 24th May 2012 (Our moving date) and arrange said instalment plan only to be told that I am unable to come to an arrangement to pay the debt if I dare to leave British Telecom and that they will have no option but to contact a debt collection agency to claim the amount in full unless I renew my contract(!).  It is my understanding that, as I am not in contract with BT anymore, I can cancel my broadband package any time I please and it is also my right to arrange a payment plan without being bullied and cajoled into staying as a BT customer when I have absolutely no desire to do business with this company EVER again.

  • Very slow broadband and connection keeps dropping

Hello, we have been BT customers since August 2013, after previously being Freeola customers for many years.  We live in a very rural area, at the end of the exchange so we are never going to get amazingly fast broadband, we are estimated 1MB.
Previously using Speedtest.net at the beginning of the year we were getting 0.9Mbps, then in May our internet dropped and we couldn't get a proper connection or speed.  We contacted Freeola who after doing some tests, said that we had a copper line failure and to contact BT.  We did this and the copper line failure issue was fixed, an openreach engineer tested the line and we assumed all was fine.  But we were still getting very slow speeds and the connection kept dropping.  So we decided to switch to BT in August, we have put up with the slow speeds and dropping connection for 3 months hoping in vain that once we got a stable line the speed would increase and we would be back to were we expected to be.
When we are using the internet, we very often get "Your connection has been reset" errors within our browsers.
This has not happened, so I have decided to come on to this forum in the hope that we can solve this issue before my hair gets any greyer.  We have a BT Home Hub 4 so we have not got all the stats that previous HH had available.
Also as we are in a rural area our telephone connection is through overhead cables and as said previously we are at the end of the exchange.
Please see below for the information that I have been able to get:
    Home hub stats:
    17:28:52, 28 Oct. ( 68.040000) DSL noise margin: 12.00 dB upstream, 9.50 dB downstream

    Hi jacoma,
Sorry to hear that your  having issues with your BT Retail services.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
    1) Are you in the TEST socket? if not can you please connect to the test socket and repeat steps 2, 3 and 4.
All the below performed in TEST Socket:
    2) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
If there is any noise on your line such as crackling, distictive noise when the phone is connected to the TEST socket and doing the quiet line test then you need to report a line fault to BT Retail by dailling 151. Once the crackling or disticive noise has gone then your broadband should slowly recover.
    3) please post adsl line statistics
    4) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtest.btwholesale.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
     Then:
     1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
     2) click Settings
     3) Click Advanced Settings
     4) Click Broadband
     5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
If you have a HomeHub 4 then the majority of the ADSL Stats shown in the previous Hubs will not be there.
for HH4 users you can go to hub manager then select troubleshooting then logs and are look for 2 entries together which will show theconnection speed and noise margin for when your HH4 last sycned with the exchange.
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link

  • Basic voltage measurement, with Meter, Relay, and Load. How do I make it work?

    Hello,
I have LV2010, and I am controlling a Meter, Relay, and Load.
Here is what I need.  Please give me any crazy idea that you can think of to explain why this will work all day and then after shift change it hangs, and locks repeatedly.
I have looked at our LAN, and Server usage.  The second shift operator likes to wear nitrile gloves so we asked that he take them off and that seamed to help but didn't solve it.  I have stood and watched both operators and their methods seam to be the same.  I can operate the test for a dozen cycles and it is perfect, then he takes over and it locks on the second cycle.
The program is very simple with a loop that calls the subvi for the equipment and then records the data for a service to push to the server.
So after you laugh at what a poor post this is, please give me any off the wall idea you have because it isn't making any sense to me.
    Thanks,

But I would like to throw out one suggestion.  You have a lot of blank space in your block diagram.  You have to scroll across the screen a whole lot.  This makes it hard to look at the code and to understand what it does.  Make it easier for others to read by eliminating the blank space and moving objects closer together.  I have two monitors side by side and I still can't see all the code without scrolling.
Something is wrong with that block diagram (looking at OCV-CCV.vi).  I ran the block diagram cleanup on it, and it stretches out a lot of structures very wide even when they hardly have any code in them.
It would be good if someone from NI can look at that VI and see if they get the same results and figure out why the cleanup tool is failing on this one.
Ben P, you are missing alot of subVI's and typedefs.  You may want to create a source distribution and upload a zip file of that so we can see all the files.
Look at the event structure in your Wait Case.  You have a Run:Value change event and Change Info:Value change event.  Both of those have their event properties set to lock front panel until event completes, but yet the event may not complete right away since the event structure is inside your state machine in a case that may not be up for execution right away.

  • CS4 - Resizing both frame and content in "width" transform palete...

We need to resize placed picture, but both frame and content at same time with writing exact dimension in "width" transform palete. Problem is that only frame is resized. If we select picture with direct selection tool, only content is resized.

Wrong field. Select the frame and use the scale fields to change the size of frames together with the content. This behavior was introduced in CS3.
Plain numbers in those fields are interpreted by default as percentages, but you can enter exact dimensions of your choice by specifying the measurement unit after the number.

  • Why do units of measurement in paragraph tab and character tab differ?

Why do units of measurement in paragraph tab and character tab differ?
In Indesign CC 2014.1 when I set the units for type to be in points and all other measurements apart from strokes to be in mm, why are the units for the paragraph tab also in mm?
In both Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC, whatever units you assign for type also are used for the paragraph settings, which makes sense.
I want everything to do with type to be in points and pretty much everything else in mm, yet the only way I can have the paragraph tab units as points is for all measurements to be in points!
Does this sound right or is something wrong with my Indesign?
    Thanks

Ok guys I see. I just wondered why InDesign differed to both Photoshop and Illustrator in this respect.
    Thanks

They are made by Adobe, and Adobe has different teams for different applications.
Sometimes the same feature in multiple applications is designed slightly differently than the way other teams would handle it.
    This may be down to:
Time constraints to get the feature in - compared to other top priority items
Having to make a decision on whether to do it one way or another way - 50/50 type thing
Due to the limitations of how the program was designed and how the feature ties in with other features etc.
And many many more programming reasons. It may be the guy doing the photoshop changes wasn't as well versed in typography needs as the indesign guy.
Who knows - but there are differences in lots of areas between all apps.
