Media Manager - "batching" several projects possible??

Anyone have a solution to "batch" several FCP projects with Media Manager.. I have several editors who are in need to move many large projects off the Xsan on to external drives for archive.
Because it takes so long to Media Manage each project, I'm looking for a way to "batch" several projects over the weekend.. Hoping for a "set it and forget it" work flow!!

regardless of whether you figure out how to do the "batch," I hope you realize that you need to confirm the success of the media manage. A few things that can (but don't necessarily) cause problems, multiclips, nests, imported digital files (as opposed to files brought in using log and transfer and log and capture). Over the years, I've seen fewer and fewer problems, but forewarned is forearmed. Just did a media manage of a 4 minute sequence and there was a problem with one audio file from a collapsed multiclip.

  • How does Media Manager handle Motion Projects within the Sequence being cop

How does Media Manager handle Motion Projects within the Sequence being copied?
I've highlighted my sequence, opened Media Manager, and copied it to another drive. When I open up the sequence in it's new project, the rendered Motion Project plays within my sequence but it won't let me go back into this Motion Project to make changes. I tried starting over. This time I highlighted the actual motion sequence and clip that is created within FCP after sending something to Motion and copied those to the new drive. When I went into the newly created 'media' folder and double clicked on the motion project it launched. It looked liked it was going to play but while my crops moves and borders were there, the filmed material is shown as a freeze frame for the duration of the motion project.
I did this with and without 'including master clips within selection'. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is there anyone who knows the answer to this? Thanks.

  • Using Media Manager to condense project

    Hi All,
So I'm working on a doc that has about 5+ TB of footage stored on a server. The director is travelling out of country for a little while, and wants to get everything that's being used onto his 1 TB drive, so that he can edit/make adjustments while he's out of town. I've been told using media manager is the way to do this, however I've only tried using it once, and it totally didn't do what I hoped, so I wanted to know if anyone has any tips for this sort of thing. Before anyone asks, Yes I read the manual and it didn't make my first attempt at MM work any smoother.
Basically, I need to create smaller .mov files from the larger files the clips are referenced from, without losing the original larger files, then take the new small ones and put them on a drive so they can travel. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks
    Austin

I don't know why the link isn't working now.
You can subscribe/download from MacBreak Studios podcast through iTunes. They have many great videos. Take a look at them.

  • MEDIA MANAGER ISSUE

I am having problems opening the media manager. When I select a sequence nothing happens. When I highlight the clips in the sequence I receive a general error. I am only able to open the manager when I select the captured clips in the browser one at a time or a few clips in a sequence. Is there a way to backup media for an entire project without having to do it a few clips at a time?

I figured it out. I continued to get a general error message when trying to use the media manager on several sequences and clips. When selecting "make sequence clips independant" I was able to use the manager. Go figure

  • Media Manager grabbing wrong TC

I've been trying to recapture an hour long sequence at an uncompressed AJA kona resolution using only the media used in the time line.
I have already been sucessful with two other sequences but there are two that are giving me a fit.
The first one won't even run through media manager and gives me a general error 34 message.
The second one will run through media manager but after it recaptures everything part of the sequence has all the wrong time codes for only one tape.
However, the first part of the sequence is fine.
It also seems to be capturing more media than it has in the time line. I have checked my media manager settings several times against what the user manual suggests and still get the same results. I figure the sequence is bad, but then why is the lower resolution version still correct?
    I am very puzzled here.
    Jaustin

The original video is 1080psf 23.98 10bit uncompressed 4:2:2 (captured DIRECTLY to hard drive from a sony cineAlta
I had 5 hours of footage. i made my edit and locked my picture...
now i wan't to make a COPY of the locked picture and ONLY the media used in the timeline (plus 1 second handles).
when selecting the appropriate options in media manager, the "modified" storage size stays exactly the same as the original....even when checking off "delete unused media"
I am familiar with media manager, it appears to be malfunctioning...because NO options, checked on or off, seem to make the modified size change!
    thanks in advance for input.

  • Custom media manager recompress setting

I would like to start using Media Manager to recompress projects I've worked on in the past. Is there anyway I can create a preset that can be transferred from one computer to another? Ideally I would create this setting and share it with a friend.

No. Just send him a screen shot.

  • Question about making a project backup with Media Manager

I have several projects that I am working on right now. I'd like to make a backup of these projects and burn them to DVDs. The question I have is when I select "copy" with Media Manager it shows me how much space the backup will be. Without selecting the render files each of my projects would fit a a single DVD. If I don't include render files can they easily be recreated by just re-rendering the backup project?
    Thanks!

Backing up a project file takes very little space. Backing up the media associated with that project can take up a tremendous amount of space. By using Media Manager, I assume that you want to back up (copy) the media ... correct?
Do you only have 4.3gb of media used in the project you want to back up? That's all the data a DVD disc will hold.

  • Creating a new project with media manager

This one should be obvious but I can't quite figure it out: I used media manager to recompress my project into a smaller one. Media manager did a nice job with that and placed all the files into a new folder BUT - where is the actual project file?? If I use the actual fcp project file from the original- the settings are all different and it told me that some media files are missing or too short. Doesn't media manager create a new project file that works with the new recompressed files that it just created??

BUT - where is the actual project file??
When you have decided on the settings in Media Manager and then tell it to do the job, the first thing you see is a dialog asking where to save the project file. Use Spotlight to search for it.
If that doesn't turn anything up, start MM again, it might have remembered the last Save location.

  • Media Managed projects audio i/o's have shifted

Trying to archive projects using Media Management has been enormously frustrating: crashing frequently, causing problems with hds being recognized, having to force quit on my mb pro.
Now I find that the projects have audio problems: the i/o's have shifted.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
I guess a workaround would be to drag over the original audio, the files aren't that big, but all the effort I've put into MMing makes me think I should skip that process and just move all the original media used in the final sequence.
All the problems I'm having now have resurrected memories of a few years ago that I'd largely forgotten. These are the same problems that made me stop before.
FCP is a great app, but this part of it *****.

This board is full of people that are update crazy...
even when they have perfectly good working systems.
i know i thought well it's just a security update not a major update.
Best advice... whenever updating the OS, unplug all
    firewire devices.
will take note of that from now on.
Was this auto-update? Try downloading the file and
running the update again with all firewire devices
    unplugged.
While the 828 is disconnected perform the factory
    reset
    again.
Disconnect the firewire cable from the 828mkII
    -Press the Setup knob
-Turn the Setup knob all the way to the right
    -Press the Select knob
    -Press the Value knob
-Power off the interface and plug the firewire cable
    back
    in
    -Power the interface back on
i have the original 828 not mark 2, so no reset i know of, just power on off.
After the Mac updates... reboot and plugin the 828,
see if that doesn't get you going.
    pancenter-
cheers pancenter, i'll give it a whirl updating without the interface plugged in. thanks for all your help.

  • Trying to consolidate project with Media Manager but it's not working

I have a 3 minute final video that I want to consolidate with media manager. I would like to have it copy the portion of the clips I used plus 1 second handles. I have checked every appropriate box but it still will not create smaller clips. For example I have a 5 GB movie clip that I used about 4 seconds of in my final edit. Final Cut is still copying over the whole file into the new folder instead of just extracting the portion I used plus the handle. I have deselected the box referring to include master clips outside of selection.
I have gotten this to work before, is this a known issue? Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

    Robert,
Media Manager has a few quarks (you've no doubt noticed!). The two biggest that I've noticed are:
CUTS MADE IN TIMELINE OF SEQUENCE
Once a larger clip is loaded into a sequence, and cuts are made to it within the sequence Media Manager loses track of the the missing middle parts. For instance if you load an hour long clip into a sequence. Make a cut at 5 minutes and a cut at 55 minutes, then delete the middle 50 minutes and slide the two cuts together; Media Manager should represent that only 10 minutes would be retained when "deleted unused media is selected." Instead, it will think the entire cut is still being used.
*To solve this: "Select All" cuts in the sequence, then right click and select "Make Clip Independent"*
    CUTS WITH SPEED CHANGES
The other issue with Media Manager, cuts that have speed changes (anything other 100%) may not reconnect correctly in the new consolidated sequence. This has been a long time problem and has gotten much better in version 6. However, it still has some weirdness...
*To solve this: "Make sure you add some amount of handle. I use 1 sec and it seems to work on larger complex projects."*
    Hope that helps. Good luck.

  • Oversized Project - Media Manager Error

Hello, I have a 200MB project file and about 3TBs of source media.
The Project File size is scary since it takes forever to load, plus FCP6 unexpected quits a few times a day (working all day/night long).
I tried Media Manager for the first time yesterday and after analyzing my project, it says my current project and expected project size is unknown with a question mark. Maybe it's too big to calculate or something. I tried this on 2 different computers, first being my laptop, the second being a decked out 8-core tower. Same exact symptoms both times.
When I commit to my settings I get General Error 34 after a minute or two.
Can anyone recommend a next step for me. Searching Media Manager is overwhelming here.
    Thanks for your time
    -Monty

You've got to pare this down! FIRST THING, Make a copy of the project and put it away as an archive. Open the project. Go to the render manager and toss out all the render files, which you probably have TONS of, in old sequences etc. Next, start throwing out old sequences that you're sure you're done with. Remember that you can always open up the archive copy and get anything you might toss by accident.
Once you're down to a manageable size, THEN try media manager. I suspect you've basically paged out fcp. 200 mb is a pretty huge file size.

  • Batch unhide file extensions after Media Manage

Every time I media manage I get a nice media folder with every single file now has its extension hidden. I hate that, if I wanted to not see the extension I would have hidden it in the original. Anyway, this can often amount to hundreds of media files that I'd rather have with a readily visible extension.
Is there a batch way to get the extensions back?
I tried selecting a bunch of files and cmd+I but in the info window the Hide Extension check box is greyed out. I've poked around some figuring there must be a command line utility that can effect this as well but have yet to find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:
    tell application "Finder"
set extension hidden of every file of entire contents of (selection as alias) to false
    end tell
Select the folder in the Finder, and press the Run button in the Script Editor.

  • Batch transcode project media?

I've been cutting a project in native AVCHD (.MTS files shot on the Sony FS100), with the intention of conforming the media used in my finished sequences to DPX files for grading in Resolve Lite (Resolve 8 can't handle .MTS files natively). My question now is: how the heck to I get my sequences out of Premiere and into Resolve? I'm a little new to Premiere, so I'm not sure if I'm overlooking something obvious…
In FCP7, it's a simple task to open up media manager and transcode the project media to a different format, omitting unused media and adding handles to the clips, if desired. Try as I might, I can't find a way to achieve this in Premiere.
The only way I can see to get my edit into Resolve is to export the sequence as a single file and use Resolve's scene cut detector to split apart the shots. This is less than ideal for a number of reasons—I have to move all my video down into a single track and strip out all the transitions, for instance, and because the shots have no handles, cross-dissolves represent a logistical nightmare.
    Is there another way?

    Andrew.
The only glitch in your workflow is the inability of Resolve to use .mts files natively.
This adds to the complication of what can be a  reasonably normal NLE to external CC application (via an xml export of the project.).  You can use an intermediate if you choose.
It is an issue for me  as well but I cover it by shooting to an external recorder simulateneously ( avch on the sd card and prores on the Samurai ssd)
Speedgrade has addressed this and it will be great ( fingers crossed).
Checkout the CS6 to Speedgrade workflow that has been posted up by Adobe.

  • Media manage project duplication help

i want to use media manager to duplicate my project, & trim it down to just the timeline clips and place it on a 2nd external drive. i think i checked/unchecked all the logical squares off in Media Manager but when it went to work a dialog box appeared warning "this operation will permanently modify existing media files". how will it modify existing media files if i am just asking for it to trim the DUPLICATE? i want to make sure that nothing is altered in the existing project...i just want to have a trimmed backup. is this warning just a general/generic warning that applies to any media manager maneuver or do i have something to worry about if i hit the "continue" (instead of "abort") button?

I had the same problem recently. The media was ripped from DVD and imported. A look at the manual told me that to be able to reduce the clip size to only the required media certain conditions have to be met. My problem was that because the clips were imported they did not have an associated Reel Name. I set a reel name for each and bingo, the size went down.
Check you meet all the conditions for the process.

  • Would it be possible to have 2 shared resources, one local containing all common topics and pictures for several projects, and another one remote containing all topics and pictures for collaboration purposes

    Hi,
I was wondering, now that I discovered the advantages of Resource Manger, if it would be possible to have 2 shared resources, one local with common topics and pictures for several projects, and another one, remote, containing the whole projects, i.e. topics and pictures, for collaboration purposes.
The local one I intend to use it for my purposes to have common items (topics & pictures) updated in all projects where they appear, and the remote one I intend to use it together with my remote colleagues that might want to do changes in the topics.
This would mean that the common topics and pictures would be present in both resources, the local one as well as the remote one.
    Thank you.

Thank you for your fast answer Rick.
I was merely wondering if it would be possible w/o having to use other products outside RoboHelp.
We are already using svn for a lot of other purposes and we are using that for the RoboHelp projects as well, however I was wondering if it would not be possible to have RoboHelp take care of the RoboHelp projects, and with svn to take care of the other things in the company.
Eventually, if it would be possible, I would think to sync all the local projects with the remote projects, then sync the local project with the local shared resources, and at the end sync the rest of the projects with the local shared resources.
