MEGA 180 remote control LINUX support

I'm trying to set the MEGA 180 up as a home entertainment system with Freevo on Debian (Linux).
The system now boots from network, and sound/video/tv-out works perfectly.
I've not managed to use the LCD, radio and remote control yet.
(Or the card reader, but that should not be a problem).
The radio and LCD I can live without, but the remote control was what got me to buy the system in the first place.  Does anyone know how to make it work with linux?
If someone could supply me with specs for the hardware, I should be able to write a driver myself, but so far, I've had no luck finding the info I need.
(I didn't expect the onboard IR reciever to work, so I had build a serial IR reciever... but when I got the PC... no serial port )
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These are the only links I have got that might be of interest.

not a lot of help I know but I light a candle every so often

  • MEGA 180 Remote/LCD API

    Hi,
I've just built a new MEGA 180 system, and while I like the hardware, I'm less than enthusiastic about the software. Frankly, Media Centre III stinks!
For one thing, I'd like to be able to use the MEGA 180 for MP3 playback without having to turn on the monitor (which is a projector in my case, that takes more than a minute to start up).
The first step would be to program the remote and the LCD display so that you can use whatever MP3 player you want, in my case I would write a WinAmp / MediaMonkey plugin.
For that I need some way to access these devices. I found some dlls and a WinIRX.ocr on the CD but I have no idea how to use them. Is there any API description I can use? Even a simple .h and .lib file for the dlls would suffice for me.
If you've heard anything about such a description, please let me know. Or maybe the adress of somebody at MSI I could contact to get it?
    Thanks!
    Martin.

I've been looking into the dll's as well; there are a few that looks promising. They can't be referenced from Visual Basic though  , so someone with more insight into C++ should have a go at them. PC Alert 4 also installs it's own dll's for writing sys- and cpu temp to the LCM, so there is plenty to choose from. Can't help out with any API descriptions though...
We should keep in mind however that the 180 and 865 are new products for MSI, and not only are they occupied with fixing the numerous problems users have reported, but they will probably try to develop other applications that take advantage of the remote and LCM. From what we've seen so far that is obviosly something they should leave to other, more suited, developers!
I too think that MSI would benefit from releasing a SDK, thus increasing the overall useability of the Mega, thus attracting more users. Leave it to the endusers to decide which mediaplayer/s we want to use.
For the moment I'm putting my hope to a Girder-plugin for the remote, since that seems the most plausible solution right now.

Iam having problems with my remote in both hi-fi mode and media center.
in hi-fi mode it is very slow and i have to sit right in front of the unit.
in media center mode it just wont work.
after re-installing media center it worked and then the next time i tried it it didn't again.
I have heard there is a firmware update around (not on msi update) if there is any one out there who has it please let me Know.

  • Mega 180 slow remote / bluebird Bios update

    Hello,
I know this has been on the forums a number of times, but I could not really find a decisive answer...
I've read most of the people consider the Mega 180 remote control (like me) to be very slow.
but I've read some comments that flashing the LCD with the bios available for the trashed LCD's
seems to help with this. (making the remote work better / faster)
I this true ? I don't want to flash my perfectly good working LCD bios if it
doesn't help with the remote control.
    any information would be appreciated
    Thanks !

I have not flashed the bios so can't answer your question definitively... However here's some suggesitions..
To me the range and aiming  of the remote was the biggest problem.  Someone on the forums (don't remember who) found that the actual problem with the Mega 180 remote was that the sensor in the Mega was not mounted well. It was obstructed. FIxing that seemed to have quite an impact on the ability to receive the signal.
I  have not done that either...
What I did was to use a Sony RM3100 learning remote. This remote has 4 transmitters. It sends a very powerful signal. Using this I can point the remote 180 degrees away from the Mega at a distance of 12 feet and it still works.
So once I had a solid signal I didn't seem to have any major problems with the remote. There were several of the functions (like navigation) that a single push of the right button caused the cursor to move twice. I guess that could be a speed problem... The Sony remote has the ability to control the period of transmission and the pause before retransmission. Using this I was able to remove the double skip to the right.  Also Girder has a control ability to help tame this problem.
The ultimate work around is to not use the Mega receiver at all but add an MCE remote and receiver.
Bottom line is I and others have found work arounds with the crummy out of box remote situation  without flashing...
    Good luck

  • Girder Plugin for MEGA 180

    Hi folks
I'm writing girder plugin for the MEGA 180 remote control. Unfortunatly it works just until reboot and that happens on any system - not only on MEGA 180.
Perhaps some of you are familiar with girder plugins and can tell me where the bug is.
    http://n.ethz.ch/student/nschmid/MSIStuff/MSIGirderPlugin.zip
Plase read the README first.txt file for installation, watch the code, test the binary and tell me if you have the same problem. The source code need Borland C++Builder to compile.
I started also a thread in the girder forum.
    Thank for helping me.
    Nathan

    Hi people
I've found the error and it is corrected. Additional I added the new device id I've got from Girder developer. I think the plugin will be soon aviable on Girder webpage.
Please heck out new version at

  • Mega 180, meedio and MCE compliant remote

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm new to this forum.
I own a Mega 180, Windows XP Pro, Home Theater III installed. I'd like to use Meedio as a front end instead of Home Threater III. I also own a MCE RC6 remote.
The problem is that none of the remotes (MSI remote and MCE remote) cannot be used with the Meedio front end, simply do not work. Is there any way to put it all together to work? I've tried WinLirc with the Mega 180 configuration profile - no success, neither with the MSI remote not MCE remote. The goal is to use MCE remote only with Meedio front end on Mega 180. What software should I use and how to configure it? Any ideas?
    Kiero

OK, I got my Mega 180 remote working with Girder. Now, how to make it work with Meedio? There is a Meedio program definition "Meedio Essentials.xml" file. I load it into Girder, but nothing happens. The Meedio plugin is not loaded into Girder memory in the settings tab (it is not present). Meedio Essentials.xml is only a configuration file, not a plugin...  Any help?

  • 1487 remote control error after upgrade to SP1

We started testing a new server running NW 6.5 SP3 with Zenworks 6.5. After importing a few test workstations that were created using an image with zen 4.0.1 agents and then upgrading the agents to 6.5 agents we were getting a 1487 error message. Discovered that there was a SP1 for Zenworks and installed the service pack. upgraded the agent on the test workstations to the new version of agent 6.5.1.0. we were still getting the 1487 error. Tried deleting the workstation from console one and rebooted the test machine. it reimported but we still are getting a 1487 error trying to do remote control. if I initiate a request session it works just fine or if I do a remote control from the user object. Any help would be appreciated
    Thank you,
    Chad Miller

    Chad,
How are you doing workstation import?
Is the case of the containers leading to your workstation objects all the
same in the Windows registry and what they are in eDirectory?...

  • Remote control dead as a d

audigy2 zs plat can not get remote to work.....

I've got Audigy2 Ex, after a while found my remote was dead. press a button and all that happend was the red light on the reciever flashed but no reaction in windows or Mediasource.
I read a couple of articles on the forum, which related to several people having this fault, which was the result of having bluetooth devices installed.
I had recently installed an MSI BToes trancei'ver, i uninstalled it and sure enough the remote worked again. So if you have BT this maybe the problem.
solution i found in the forum is to uninstall the remote control manager and install a program called uICE from www.mediatexx.com . this is a generic iR remote control app. supporting several manufactures. I got it working but couldn't find suitable support for my Audigy2 Ex dri've and Mediasource program.
I've decided not to follow this route. and tried several different installation meathods and found i could get both working be enabling the remote in MediaSource and then installing my BToes. they both worked together fine untill the next time i restart. upon restart the remote is dead again, i can only assume that it is some regestry entry that is overwritten. this is as far as i've gotten

  • Mega 180 Athlon 3200+

    Hi there,
This had been mentioned before but can i use a Athlon 3200+ to its full capacity? The 3200+ i will get soon is a 400Mhz CPU. My mega 180 is water cooled so heat is not a problem.
The reason i need the full power of the CPU is that i plan to use the MEGA for future HDTV playback
I hve read on http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/msi_mega_180_review/page2.asp  mentions:
'nfortunately, the nForce2 IGP is officially limited to bus speeds of 333MHz (NVIDIA didn’t add support for 400MHz to the IGP), so the MEGA 180 doesn’t officially support AMD’s Athlon XP 3200+. Instead, the highest processor support is the Athlon XP 3000+. (To MSI’s credit, they have left the door open to Athlon XP 3200+ via jumper, but this is officially considered overclocking.)'
Which jumper are they talking about? The FSB jumper they mention in the manual is set to default 133/166 MHz
    According to the PDF manual
    FSB Mode Jumper: J8
This jumper allows you to set the CPU FSB mode.
    User mode
    (default)
    133 MHz
    Safe mode
    100 MHz
    CPU FSB Frequency Jumper: J7
This jumper is used to specify the CPU FSB (Front Side Bus) frequency.
Leave the jumper short connected if a 133/166MHz FSB CPU is installed. If the
CPU supports 100MHz FSB, leave the jumper open. To use a 200MHz FSB
CPU, set the jumper short and enter the BIOS Setup Utility to adjust the CPU
    FSB Clock Frequency.
so setting the FSB to 200 should get this to work.  I will also be using PC3200 DDR
    Thanks

do you have a vga card in it
nforce 2 onboard vga usually stops working at around fsb 185 or so

  • Mega 180 Replacement Remote Control

    Can anyone help please!
I have a great Mega 180 but have trashed the Remote Control.  Can anyone suggest where I can get a replacement?  Please do not say MSI because the UK branch is as useless as a chocolate fireguard telling me to look on "where to buy"  Trouble is no-one stocks it anymore.  You would think MSI kept spares for their loyal customers ???

To Bernhard and Hery (MSI Forum Moderators)
I expect you will simply remove this post!  But at the very least have the common decency to reply to me either in the forum or to my email address.  Failing that have the guts to give me you email addresses so I san politely write to you direct!
Lets get a few thing right guys!!....
    1)  I have NOT used rude or offensive language on this forum  If you are unable solve the most basic of puzzles, I will even give you guys the answers...     a)   .... you  means    Fink you.
                                                          b) taking the .... means   taking the Pads.  Could the "Moderators of this forum please tell me how these 2 sayings are offensive?
    2)  If you or anyone bought a brand new car, OK after 7 years you may not expect full manufacurers support but at least you would expect to be able to get spare parts for it!!  To be told by the manufacturer... sorry go away we dont want to know this product and fink you is simply unacceptable.  It would just, but only just be OK if they went out of business, but they are a currently trading company.  Even now you can get new parts for a Delorean!
I thought the whole idea of a so called Forum was to be able to express your views and concerns.  Clearly not on the MSI Forum.  G
Again I ask HOW WOULD THE MODERATORS FEEL?  Or are you paid by MSI

  • Mega 180: Lost my Remote Control

i just lost my remote control for my mega 180. is there any chance to use one of those universal remote controls ? what settings do i have to use ?
    thanks

The Mega 180's remote control is not a standard supported by the universal remotes. I have a learning remote. It was even difficult to get the learning remote to learn the MSI codes which leads me to believe MSI is doing something out of the ordinary on their remote.
You will either have to find the remote, try to buy one from MSI support (good luck!) or ebay, or  get a USB or serial attached remote. This will not work with the HI FI mode however.
If you have a pocket PC PDA you may be able to find a module for the MSI remote that would work with their very good remote controller program. But this will be quite an adventure..
I'd recommend trying to buy one from ebay first or MSI second.

  • Mega 180 spdif out w/ Linux ALSA

Has anyone managed to get the spdif output working under Linux ALSA?  I've got analog out working no prob, but I'm getting nothing out on optical. A working .asoundrc  file would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Roman

Quote from: romanr on 22-January-05, 23:25:42
Just a follow up - ALSA does *NOT* currently work on the Mega 180 as it is not supported by the nvidia drivers.
OSS however does work as of the 0292 release and is pretty much fully implemented. Hopefully the next set of drivers will support ALSA.
    Cheers,
    Roman
ALSA has worked for me since 2.6.8, but I don't use the nvidia binary Nforce2 drivers (net, sound etc.)

  • Network drivers, Mega 180, and Linux

Currently i have Suse 9.0 installed on my Mega 180 box, unfortunatly it doesnt see any of my nForce2 component like my Ethernet LAN or the Wireless network.  Does any one know where i can find drivers that will work with the Mega 180?  Has anyone used other Linux packages and got the Ethernet to work?
    Thanks
    -Codehack

Well i was able to get the Ethernet working finally. Here are the steps for doing it:
    1. Download the nForce2 linux driver you need and install it  http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261.html.
    2. Reboot your machine.(This may not be nescessary)
    3. Run "insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-override-athlon/kernel/drivers/net/nvnet.o"
(This directory path may not be exact since this is specific to suse linux)
    4. (Also suse specific)  Run Yast Control Center
    5. Under Network Devices, click on Network card
    6. Select Other and click on Configure.
    7. Use default prameters for network device and device number.  Under Module name put "nvnet", under options put your base io=# and irq=#.  You can find this numbers in the Suse Plugger Under Network Controller/ Micro-Star International nForce2 Ethernet Controller and select Details, it should be under your resources Tab.  Do not select the other one since that is your wireless network, i think, if your not sure under the details of the network controller there should be an Driver tab and it should set nvnet.
    8. Select your DHCP options and your ready to go.
    Enjoy!
