MenuBar Component: Listener for Click on Main Menu?

When using the MenuBar component, is there a way to add an
event that will tirgger when the user clicks an item in the MenuBar
(as differentiated from when they click on a sub-menu item)?

If you removed the stop() from scene 2 it will not stop there it will return to wherever "home" is.
If you intend to have the timeline stop at some frame, then you need to place a stop() command in that frame, or use a gotoAndStop() command.
If you are going to use scenes  be consistent with the way you write the goto commands. The use of is rarely recommended - instead, use different sections of the timeline of just one scene, or use movieclips and control their visibility, or a combination of both.
If you continue to have issues, try simplifying first - build/add the navigation for one section at a time instead of trying to get it all in one shot.

  • How to make  menuBar UI listen for top level click

    Hi,
            The  menubar only listen to the sub level menu item(i mean click), and I  would like to make menubar listen to top level also.
    for eg:
    NEWS-> worldnews.
    it listen the sublevel item worldnews ,i would like to make top level NEWS also.
    I  tried using selected index. sometimes  -1 was returned when I clicked  the “NEWS” item.  I assume this is because it has sub-menu items.
    can anyone give solution for this???????

    hi Neobox75,
    I have created an air application for a  news website( i didnt finsh it fully) . I display the images ,news everythng using feed. I used httpservice to get the values from the feed. now my problem is if i deploy this package to the user means if he has the internet connection ...All my information wil be displayed to him as i read all the information through feed .  if the network conection is not available(offline) means i have to  display the previous news and images to him( if v use timer to refresh it wil be cached in user system  but i dnt knw how to retreive from cache if the user is offline ).how it can be done please give the solution for it...

  • Component listening for a event

    I need to make 1 component listen for an event in another component..
    JMenuItem listens for a TreeSelectionEvent and in case something selected enables... and disables otherwise...
    addTreeSelectionListener() is not possible for a JMenuItem component...
    so how do i do that?
    the code below is not acceptable because there is a lot of JMenuItem objects and it's a bit messy and difficult to add each...
    tree.addTreeSelectionListener(blah) {
    JMenuItem.setEnabled(false);
    i want a component checking himself for a proper condition...
    in case it will require too much hardware resourses what would you suggest?

  • Listening for click event

    I am curious, how can you have a child mxml page listen for

    Let's say you have a button, call it 'btn1' on page1.mxml and

    Dear All,
    Can anybody help me why my code does not work.
    Use case, using an Image, i wanted to call a managed bean method whenever I clicked the image. So here is what I did, I added a clientlistner

         <af:serverListener type="ImageEvent"

  • Dispatching & listening for custom events from custom component [Flex 4.1]

    I'm giving this a try for the first time and I'm not sure I have the recipe correct!
    I have a custom component - it contains a data grid where I want to double click a row and dispatch an event that a row has been chosen.
    I created a custom event
    package oss
        import flash.events.Event;
        public class PersonChosenEvent extends Event
            public function PersonChosenEvent(type:String, bubbles:Boolean=false, cancelable:Boolean=false)
                super(type, bubbles, cancelable);
            // Define static constant.
            public static const PERSON_CHOSEN:String = "personChosen";
            // Define a public variable to hold the state of the enable property.
            public var isEnabled:Boolean;
            // Override the inherited clone() method.
            override public function clone():Event {
                return new PersonChosenEvent(type);
    Then I try to dispatch the event within the component when the datagrid is doubleclicked:
    import oss.PersonChosenEvent
    dispatchEvent(new PersonChosenEvent(PersonChosenEvent.PERSON_CHOSEN, true, false));
    And in the parent application containing the component I do on creationComplete
    addEventListener(PersonChosenEvent.PERSON_CHOSEN,addPersonToList);
    The event does not seem to fire though. And if I try to evaluate the "new PersonChosenEvent(..." code it tells me "no such variable".
    What am I doing wrong?
    (It was so easy in VisualAge for Java, what have we done in the last 10 years?? )
    Martin

    I've done this kind of thing routinely, when I want to add information to the event.  I never code the "clone" method at all.
    Be sure that you are listening to the event on a parent of the dispatching component.
    You can also have the dispatching component listen for the event too, and use trace() to get a debug message.
    I doubt if it has anything to to with "bubbles" since the default is true.
    Sample code
    In a child (BorderContainer)
    dispatchEvent(new ActivationEvent(ActivationEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE,null,window));
    In the container parent (BorderContainer)
    activation.addEventListener(ActivationEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE,activationEvent);
    package components.events
        import components.containers.SemanticWindow;
        import components.triples.SemanticActivation;
        import flash.events.Event;
        public class ActivationEvent extends Event
            public static const LOADED:String = "ActivationEvent: loaded";
            public static const CREATION_COMPLETE:String = "ActivationEvent: creation complete";
            public static const RELOADED:String = "ActivationEvent: reloaded";
            public static const LEFT_SIDE:String = "ActivationEvent: left side";
            public static const RIGHT_SIDE:String = "ActivationEvent: right side";
            private var _activation:SemanticActivation;
            private var _window:SemanticWindow;
            public function ActivationEvent(type:String, activation:SemanticActivation, window:SemanticWindow)
                super(type);
                _activation = activation;
                _window = window
            public function get activation():SemanticActivation {
                return _activation;
            public function get window():SemanticWindow{
                return _window;

  • Advice to implement a mouse listener for card game

    Hi,
    I am wondering about the best way to apply a mouselistener in my card game.
    - i only want to listen for 'clicks'
    - I have a JFrame with a JPanel inside. The JPanel has a null layout and many JLabels. The JLabels are the cards, i want to listen for mouse clicks on these 'cards'
    I have seen it is not possible to apply a mouse listener to a JPanel or JLabel so is the most efficient way to apply the listener to the JFrame and then use getComponent () to determine which JLabel has been clicked ? or is there a better way ?
    any thoughts appreciated . .

    hey dubai, thanks for your quick help today, it is much appreciated !
    i know the event should provide a reference to the source, i use the toString to overide the methods in the mouseEvent object and im printing this string to the console. It gives me the correct dimensions within my JPanel of where i clicked but the source is always given as the panel name. Have you any idea why it does not return the name of the JLabel ? I checked out the Action interface, thanks, it cud be very useful to seperate the code by using this.

  • Handling a main menu

    hi All!
    I have a general question for handling a main menu.
    so this is the case:
    I have a class extending a JFrame called MainMenuFrame. It contains a MainMenuPanel.
    i have another JFrame called GameFrame, and this is for the new game class.
    the MainMenuPanel is where all the main menu code takes place and there i have 3 buttons.
    Now, i have a variable called selection. it checks which button was selecte and get a value accordingly.
    my question is where i should handle the selection. already inside the MainMenuPanel or in the MainMenuFrame?
    (when i get a new game selection i want to setVisible(false) the mainMenuFrame and setvisible(true) the GameFrame).
    Thanks

    I would put the selection variable in main. When it finds that New Game is selected it calls a static method which goes something like:
    newGameSelected(GameFrame g, MainMenuFrame m){
        m.setVisible(false);
        g.setVisible(true);
    }

    The problem that im having is that my buttons are in my Main Application and the data retrival process is in my components! so i was trying to create addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK events in a component that was listening for events in my Main application. i have search the internet but every one is talking about the process in the main or component but not both!

  • Create Component that Listens for Custom Event

    I've read a lot of tutorials and posts in this forum but still seem to be missing something.
    I want to be able to create an arbitrary number of instances of a custom class (based on Button) that each listen to a custom event dispatched in the application.  Eventually the event will carry data (including information that will let each Button determine whether it should react to the event), but for now I just want them to be able to hear the event.
    What's supposed to happen is
    1) Clicking the button labeled "I Make the Button" creates an instance of EventHearingButton using this.addElement.
    2) Clicking the button labeled "I Send the Event" dispatches the SuperCustomEvent custom event, with the additional information "I heard that" stored in the Information string
    3) The created EventHearingButton hears the event and updates its label to the value in the Information string.
    What actually happens is the EventHearingButton is created OK, but nothing happens when the "I Send the Event" button is clicked.

    Hi ...
    If you have moved the Safari application from the Applications folder, move it back.
    As far as the cache goes, there's a work around for that when you can't empty the Safari cache from the menu bar.
    Go to    ~/Library/Caches/com.aple.Safari.Cache.db.  Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Safari.

  • How do I make a main menu for a game?

    Hi,
    I need to make a main menu for this tower defense game that I am making.  I have 2 parts to the menu that I need to put together.  I have it as follows:
    I have a start screen where the player presses the start button.  I now need it to take the user to the main menu itself.  I have both the start menu and main menu in the same document but on different layers.  I have a button labeled as start which I have set up to where when it is clicked, it changes colors but I also need it to hide/show the menu layer.  I just need the that start button to take users to the menu layer where I have 3 more buttons which are resume, new, and options.  I will need those buttons to go to their different layers also.  After users hit the resume or new buttons, I need the game itself to start which I will start making after I figure out the other issues.
    I am new to Flash and I really want to learn how to make tower defense games.  For now, I am using http://www.ehow.com/how_7788131_make-tower-defense-game-flash.html as a guide to make the game stuff but it doesn't say anything about a main menu.  I am using a trial version of Flash Pro CS6 and it is due to expire in 28 days.
    Any and all help will be great! Thanks, xp3tp85

    I used this and it worked:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    start_button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,startF);
    function startF (e:MouseEvent):void{
    gotoAndStop("main_menu");
    On the next layer I used this and it worked too:
    back_button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, buttonClick);
    function buttonClick(event:MouseEvent):void{
           gotoAndStop(1);
    Apparently it wont let me use the same code twice on one timeline.  Is there any way around this?  I need a few more buttons on the main menu for the game.

  • Main window animation to fly in when clicked on different menu buttons

    For a flash website I'm creating, I want my main window box with all the information containing it to fly in when a menu button is clicked.
    I can't figure out the actionscript to do that.
    It's the same thing as this website's main window:

    thanks for the tips!
    did you know of any links or templates that would have the actionscript for that already done that i could base mine off of?
    I'm not sure how I would make the movieclip tween when I clicked on a menu button and have the text in it change as well.

  • Multiple Buttons in JTable Headers:  Listening for Mouse Clicks

    I am writing a table which has table headers that contain multiple buttons. For the header cells, I am using a custom cell renderer which extends JPanel. A JLabel and JButtons are added to the JPanel.
    Unfortunately, the buttons do not do anything. (Clicking in the area of a button doesn't appear to have any effect; the button doesn't appear to be pressed.)
    Looking through the archives, I read a suggestion that the way to solve this problem is to listen for mouse clicks on the table header and then determine whether the mouse clicks fall in the area of the button. However, I cannot seem to get coordinates for the button that match the coordinates I see for mouse clicks.
    The coordinates for mouse clicks seem to be relative to the top left corner of the table header (which would match the specification for mouse listeners). I haven't figured out how to get corresponding coordinates for the button. The coordinates returned by JButton.getBounds() seem to be relative to the top left corner of the panel. I hoped I could just add those to the coordinates for the panel to get coordinates relative to the table header, but JPanel.getBounds() gives me negative numbers for x and y (?!?). JPanel.getLocation() gives me the same negative numbers. When I tried JPanel.getLocationOnScreen(), I get an IllegalComponentStateException:
    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.awt.IllegalComponentStateException: component must be showing on the screen to determine its location
    Can someone tell me how to get coordinates for the button on the JTableHeader? Or is there an easier way to do this (some way to make the buttons actually work so I can just use an ActionListener like I normally would)?
    Here is relevant code:
    public class MyTableHeaderRenderer extends JPanel implements TableCellRenderer {
    public MyTableHeaderRenderer() {
      setOpaque(true);
      // ... set colors...
      setBorder(UIManager.getBorder("TableHeader.cellBorder"));
      setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.LEADING));
      setAlignmentY(Component.CENTER_ALIGNMENT);
    public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table,
                                                     Object value,
                                                     boolean isSelected,
                                                     boolean hasFocus,
                                                     int row,
                                                     int column){
      if (table != null){
        removeAll();
        String valueString = (value == null) ? "" : value.toString();
        add(new JLabel(valueString));
        Insets zeroInsets = new Insets(0, 0, 0, 0);
        final JButton sortAscendingButton = new JButton("1");
        sortAscendingButton.setMargin(zeroInsets);
        table.getTableHeader().addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter(){
          public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
            Rectangle buttonBounds = sortAscendingButton.getBounds();
            Rectangle panelBounds = MyTableHeaderRenderer.this.getBounds();
            System.out.println(Revising based on (" + panelBounds.x + ", "
                               + panelBounds.y + ")...");
            buttonBounds.translate(panelBounds.x, panelBounds.y);
            if (buttonBounds.contains(e.getX(), e.getY())){  // The click was on this button.
              System.out.println("Calling sortAscending...");
              ((MyTableModel) table.getModel()).sortAscending(column);
            else{
              System.out.println("(" + e.getX() + ", " + e.getY() + ") is not within "
                                 + sortAscendingButton.getBounds() + " [ revised to " + buttonBounds + "].");
        sortAscendingButton.setEnabled(true);
        add(sortAscendingButton);
        JButton button2 = new JButton("2");
        button2.setMargin(zeroInsets);
        add(button2);
        //etc
      return this;
    }

    I found a solution to this: It's the getHeaderRect method in class JTableHeader.
    table.getTableHeader().addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter(){
      public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
        Rectangle panelBounds = table.getTableHeader().getHeaderRect(column);
        Rectangle buttonBounds = sortAscendingButton.getBounds();
        buttonBounds.translate(panelBounds.x, panelBounds.y);
        if (buttonBounds.contains(e.getX(), e.getY()) && processedEvents.add(e)){  // The click was on this button.
          ((MyTableModel) table.getModel()).sortAscending(column);
    });
