Menubar connected to Global variable

I am using a menubar component. Some of the items in the menu
need to change what they say according to the state of a global
variable. I have set up the menu using XML that look likes this...
<menu label="Grid "><mnuitm label="Show Grid "
labelAlt="Hide Grid " act="switchGrid" global="G_GRID_VIZ"
/></menu>
By using the labelfunction shown below, I am able to have the
label change but it only happens on rollover not when the menu
opens.
CMP_menubar.labelFunction =
function(itemObj:Object,addCheck){
if(Boolean(itemObj.attributes.global)){
var globalVal:String = itemObj.attributes.global;
if(_root[globalVal]) return itemObj.attributes.labelAlt;
else return itemObj.attributes.label;
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am at the end of my rope
and need some help.
Thanks

• How do I add a global variable to my app?

Hi all,
I am building a flex app which displays data in different tabs from a mysql database and I wan't to add a sign in process to make sure only registered users of the mysql db can see the data.
To achieve this I built a sign in component which accepts a username, password and the name of the database to connect to. My flex app then uses a php script to verify that the user can connect to the database using the details entered. If not, the sign in component displays an error message, but if sign in details are verified then the user can see the data from the database.
How can I store the details in the flex app for that users session so that when the user queries the db for data, flex uses the details entered during the sign in process to connect to the mysql db and submit the query?
I thought about storing the details as an array in a global variable and then accessing that global variable from anywhere in my app but I don't know if that is the correct/secure way to do what I want, nor do I know how to do it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
xander

quick, dirty example, could be improved on but it'll get you rolling;
After user login has succeeded, send off another HTTP service eg;
========
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
public var whateverUserNameWasEntered:String;
public var whateverUserPasswordEntered:String;
public function onLoginSuccess():void
whateverUserNameWasEntered:String = loginbox.text;
whateverUserPasswordEntered:String = passwordbox.text;
storeSessionStuff.send();
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:HTTPService id="storeSessionStuff" showBusyCursor="true" method="POST"  url="http://localhost/store.php" useProxy="false">
<mx:request xmlns="">
<username>
{whateverUserNameWasEntered}
</username>
<password>
{whateverUserPasswordEntered}
</password>
</mx:request>
</mx:HTTPService>
========
direct it to the php file.....
<?php
session_start();
$_SESSION['username'] = $_POST['username'];
$_SESSION['password']   = $_POST['password'];
?>
Then, whenever you want to get the information out of the Session, send off another HTTP Service...;
<mx:HTTPService id="getSessionStuff" result="storeData(event)" showBusyCursor="true" method="POST"  url="http://localhost/get.php" useProxy="false"/>
to the php file....
<?php
session_start();
print "<details><username>".$_SESSION['username']."</username><password>".$_SESSION['password'] ."</password></details>";
?>
which, you need a result function for:
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
private function storeData(evt:ResultEvent):void
var username:String;
var password: String;
username = evt.result.details.username;
password = evt.result.details.password;
]]>
</mx:Script>
ta daa
(if thats what you meant)

• How can I access global variables in a loaded Applescript?

How can I access global variables in a loaded script, in Xcode, ApplescriptObjC? Basically, I have a global variable defined in my parent script using "property", and I need to modify objects connected to those variables inside of a loaded script.
Example:
Parent script:
script AppDelegate
property myTextField : missing value
//linked to a text field object
tell myScript to myAwesomeHandler_()
end script
Loaded script:
on myAwesomeHandler_()
myTextField's setStringValue_("The new Xcode is so glitchy ugh")
//changes value of linked text field of parent script
end myAwesomeHandler_
The problem is, the variable is undefined in the Loaded script, and I need it to have the same value as the parent script, and I don't want to pass the variable through the Handler. Any ideas?

I think want you are looking to do will need to be done in two steps. Because myTextField needs to be a property for the ObjectiveC part of the code you cannot turn it into a global.
However if you make a temporary variable global assign the string to it in the handler then set myTextField off of it.
global myTextFieldGlobal
script AppDelegate
property myTextField : missing value
//linked to a text field object
tell myScript to myAwesomeHandler_()
myTextField's setStringValue_(myTextFieldGlobal)
end script
on myAwesomeHandler_()
set myTextFieldGlobal to "The new Xcode is so glitchy ugh"
//changes value of linked text field of parent script
end myAwesomeHandler_
I know you stated you did not want the handler to return a value but I have to ask why? Global's, imo, are not a good idea and really should be used as a last resort.
One other possibility is to pass a reference to the property to the handler. Not sure if that works in AS of if that would satisfy our requirement of not passing the variable through the handler
<edit>
Another though have you tried to define the property outside the script? That is
property myTextField : missing value
script AppDelegate
Not sure if that will work.
You might also want to have a look at Scope of Properties and Variables Declared in a Script Object

• What is the best way to retrive data from a Global Variable?

Here is what I want to do,
I have several PC's that run different types of tests. I want to use a global variable, running on a single PC, that acts like a sever that can be accessed by the other PC's in my lab. This Global variable will store the hostnames of the different PC's that are currently running each test, along with a description of the test. Then, a user can access this Global variable to read the different values and select the PC and connect to it's desktop using Remote Desktop in Windows.
Is it possible to write data to the Global variable that is running on the single PC?
What is the best way to do this? Does anyone have a sample VI?
What is the best way to then read the data from the Global variable?
(I will probably use an array\cluster to store the hostnames.)

Another pre-LV8 idea...
A functional global can be accessed using VI-Server and called using "call by reference".
This approach harnesses the TCP functionality built into the VI-Server to manage the conncetion.
This can be pretty quick and (if the functional global is written correctly) will support buffered- mixed data types. (Try to do that with the Shared Variable ).
Just another idea,

Thanks Saish,
Your response is really appreciated. Sorry about that
as i didnt know there is 'code' formatting button,
and I will look into the Singleton pattern.
As I'm still in the learning stage. Therefore, i
still have a lot of thing do not understand.
... use it in a method signature ...What is "a method signature" ?
A method signature is basically the method's parameters, return value, name and any access or other modifiers. The following is a method signature:
static final public void main(final String[] args)Between the braces of the method body is the implementation (or as I already alluded to, the method body).
Consider using an already-developed connection poolimplementation, such as Jakarta Commons DBCP ...
I'm trying to implement the Jakarta DBCP. Did I go
into the wrong way?
Sorry, did not read the imports. Yes, you are. However, I am confused about what you are trying to implement. You have a static method getDataSource(). You also have a static variable 'ds'. Use one or the other. I would be that there are seemingly random errors cropping up based on whether you remember to call getDataSource() or not.
You do not, generally, want the data source to be static. Multiple threads might use the class. And if there is only a static data source, you will either need to synchronize the methods that use the data source (resulting in a scaling bottleneck) or not synchronize them (which will totally destroy any concept of a logical unit of work or database transaction).
.. A static datasource, as in your class, can onlysafely be used by one thread at a time, potentially
introducing scaling bottlenecks (or race conditions)
in your system ...
So, you mean there is no need for the DataSource to
be static ?
No, in fact, IMO, it should not be. That is why you are pooling. Use instances. The pool will manage the connections and their availabilty for you.
Why are you throwing GeneralException everywhere?Here's a question: can someone using your class (a
caller) realistically be expected to handle a
database exception?
When there is a database error, I just want to stop
the process and redirect the user to an error page. I
will look into the unchecked exceptions. Thanks.
Unchecked exceptions do not need to be declared in a method signature or caught within the method body. Checked exceptions do. As such, an added benefit is that unchecked exceptions de-clutter your code.
In your initResources() method, what happens if theclose() on ResultSet throws an exception
Oh, yes. I'm so stupid.
Now I only have ...
private static DataSource ds; // set this to
be static so all threads share the same obj in JVM
private Connection conn;
private CallableStatement cs;
private void initResource() throws GeneralException
n {
try {
if(cs != null) {
cs.close();
logger.info("CallableStatement has been
as been free");
} catch(Exception exception) {
logger.error(exception.toString());
throw new
throw new GeneralException(exception.toString());
You still have issues.
public void initResources() {
if (rs != null) {
try { rs.close(); } catch (SQLException ignore) { ignore.printStackTrace(); }
if (stmt != null) {
try { stmt.close(); } catch (SQLException ignore) { ignore.printStackTrace(); }
}Normally, this type of method would not be called initResources() but rather closeResources() or freeResources(). It would be called from within the 'finally' block of another method using the CallableStatement or ResultSet.
This is really is problem, would you mind to tell me
how to handle this(close the connection) if the
close() on either CallableStatement or Resultset
throws an exception ?
See above. Simply log the exception (there is usually nothing meaningful you can do if a close() fails, and it is up to you as a developer if this is an error or just a warning). Another option is to 'chain' exceptions. In your own exception, add a method 'addException(Throwable)'. This would add another exception to a List of exceptions. When you print the stack trace, iterate through the chained exceptions to print them all out. One place where I find this useful is rollback() code. If the original SQL statement fails AND the rollback fails, I definitely want to see that rollback() exception as well in my logs.
The DB thing makes me headache. What I actually
wanted is a solution for:
Let say I have a class "HelloAction.class" contains
the code:
public ActionForward XXX() {
DbManager DB = new DBManager();
... do some DB thing here...
SecondClass SC = new SecondClass();
SC.doSomeOtherDbThing();
... do something else...
ThirdClass TC = new ThirdClass();
SC.doMoreOtherDbThing();
}There are some functions in SecondClass.class and
ThirdClass.class that will need database connection.
I consider 'global variable' is because I want these
two classes are able to use the same
connection(DbManager) from the function -
ActionForward XXX().
What is the best way to implement the above situation
(sharing the same connection in different classes &
sub-classes?
I also just realize that the problem of multi-threads
with these two class variables..
private Connection conn;
private CallableStatement cs;Really headache. I really appreciate any comments.
Thanks.
- myyPass the Connection or DataSource to each method or constructor. Call commit() or rollback() from the method that created the transaction.

• Global variables in Oracle 8.1.6 on NT

I am running Oracle 8.1.6 on Windows NT.
Does anybody know how can I create and maintain global variables or even constants, so that the same variables and constants could be used by all connections to the database.
The main feature is that I can store their values in database table or external file, but have not to read these values from table or file every time I need them.
All readings from the source file or table must occur only one time, for example, during database server startup, after it all the values must be supplied directly from phisical memory rather than from the table or external file (to speed up this process).
Thank you.

Your answer lies in one of the new features introduced in the Oracle8i: New Features for Administrators course. You can create a function that executes as soon as the user logs in, loading the variables that are required.

• Global variable to capture username with Form 6i

Hi everyone,
I have a menu created with Forms 6i and the shortcut that I use to call the menu has in its target the following: C:\orant\BIN\ifrun60.EXE userid=username/password MYFORM.FMX
When I remove the username and password from the shortcut target it asks me for the username and password so when I typed, I am allowed to go into the application, but I want to be able to store the username on a global variable and put the value on a item when the user chooses the program that he or her wants to use, so they don't go to see other users information.
Can anyone please help me to do this step by step?
Thanks in advance!!

Create On-Logon trigger at form level and provide the connection string like
declare
uname varchar2(10);
pass  varchar2(10);
begin
uname := 'user_name';
pass  :='password';

Hope this will help

anyone can help me with those errors? i just need global variable, so i can use it for check relationship with other table.
or if anyone of you can give me another way to get the value of field "id" from a table?
thank you so much before! and i am sorry if my english is bad.

If you select the JSP page in the graphical stuts-config.xml overview in JDeveloper, you should see the properties of the JSP page in the property inspector. One of those properties defines the Java class that handles the action/forwarding/etc.
Then you should create a new Java-class that extends the original action handling class. Change the property in the graphical stuts-config.xml overview in JDeveloper to this new class.
Then add an event attribute to the submitbutton element in the form of your JSP page, e.g. seeDetails.
In your newly created class you can then create a new method: onSeeDetails. This method should be invoked when the submit button is pressed and the form is submitted.
In the ADF ToyStore demo there are some examples of Java classes that extend the standard action handler. There in the ViewController project.

• What is the difference between using a global variable,passing a valuee and using a reference?

I have created a project that consists of several VIs. Only the main VI has a front panel and the others perform functions. The function VIs are dependent on controls on the main VI's front panel. I have several ways of passing the value of the controls. One is to use a global variable and just place it on the dependent VIs. Another option is to strictly connect the terminal from the control to a VI connector block and pass the value directly. My last option is to create a reference of the control and reference it inside the dependent VIs, but this would also require connections to be made to the VI block.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of these options?

1) Globals are evil and introduce race conditions.
2) The sub-VI only get the value when it was called and updates that occur while the sub-VI is runing are not sensed by the sub-VI
3) This uses property node "value" or "value signaling" both of which run the user interface thread which is single-threaded and you incur a thread swap hit to performance. You also have a potential for race conditions.
The are various methods for sharing dat to/from sub-VI which include Queues and Action Engines.

• Problem with view object for global variables

Hi,
I'm using jdeveloper 11.1.2.3.0
We are using view object with transient attributes for global variables.
we defined the view as explained here:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/web.1111/b31974/bcstatemgmt.htm#ADFFD19610
also we defined one of the attributes as primary key.
When we start to test our application with disable connection pooling we got some problems.
sometimes the row in the global view object is deleted.
(for example after using executeEmptyRowSet on other view object).
it looks strange, we couldn't fוnd why does it happen.
Any idea?

As Timo said, it is very hard to help without source.
Are you sure that you do the next step:
After the call to super.prepareSession(), add code to create a new row in the transient view object and insert it into the view object.

• Global Variable translated to different characters

We recently upgraded BODS from 4.2 SP1 to 4.2 SP4. Now we are facing issues in those DataFlows where are used Hierarchy Flattering functions, that Global Variables are wrongly translated from text to weird Asian characters. E.g. varchar variable: 'abc' is transformed to '扡c'. As data source/target is used HANA. The issue is caused whenever there is any table from HANA datastore 'directly' connected to HANA (attached picture). When used ODBC connection to HANA than it works fine, but then we are loosing Bulk load options.
Attached ATL (with .txt extenstion) has password: abc
Versions:
DS: 4.2 SP4
HANA: 1.0 SP09
HANA Client ODBC: 1.00.09 (tested also on 1.)

• Stopping a subvi from the main vi with a global variable

Hello,
I want a vi and a subvi to stop simultaneously. Thus, I created a global variable, STOP, which I connected it with the stop of the main vi and also with the conditional terminal of the subvi. However, it doesn’t work. Could somebody explain where am I wrong?
Thank you in advance

Hi,
You are making 2 mistakes. The first is that you didn't temporize the loops. The second is that when you launch the main VI this straight away launch the subvi that get the control and don't release till something change the value of the global variable, but in that time the main isn't running, so even though you press the stop button the main is in not running mode and doesn't change the variable.
Try this with the VI server to pass trough the control between two VIs.

• Where to store "global variable" for a web application

There are some "global" variables in my portal web application. e.g. email server
name, admin email address etc. Will web.xml context-param a good place to store these

If so, how do I retrieve it back from a java class? It is easy in a jsp file: appalication.getAttribute(),

I still believe that the information like connectivity parameters to remote
servers in the distributed environments would be best stored in the JNDI
tree. I agree, that it is not a "general storage area", but I am not talking
about storing application run-time data either.
In the clustered environments it would provide additional benefits of
centralizing this kind information across the cluster.

JNDI is not a general-purpose storage area, although you could bind data
in a JNDI tree. A better (and simpler) way is to store them as context
parameters. You could read the initial values for these variables from a
servlet init parameters.

I would advise to put you global variable in JNDI tree.
You can use jndi.properties file to store name-value pairs, which will
get
loaded into jndi tree at the server startup. Just put this file in your
application class path.
The other method would be to code a startup class to store the global
variable in the jndi tree.

• Storing global variable

Hey there
I'm trying to figure out how/if you can store a global variable, for access in all classes of the program. In this case I am developing an app which connects to a database. At the moment each class makes a seperate connection to the database for it's purposes, but I would rather make one connection at the beginning, and then each class shares this connection. I realise I can do this by having each class constructor accept a connection, and then just threading the connection to all of them. However, is there a way I can just store that connection somewhere in memory, and access it from all classes. I remember being able to do this in C# so hopefully Java has something similar.
Thanks
Nathan

I don't know how this got into the JDBC forum, but a
basic way of making a "global" variable is like
this:public class User {
public static Connection theConnection;
}Then other classes access it like
this:Connection conn =
User.theConnection;When you learn some Java
you'll find out that this is primitive programming and
there are better ways, but this will do for a raw
beginner.It's quite sad that you say this, I have been using java in my degree for the last 3 years. I guess we haven't developed applications from scratch, but I've done tons and tons of assignments in Java. The fact that I'm still at raw beginner level scares me. Perhaps I should not be looking for a programming job next year.

• Global Variable Question

I need to create a way for someone to view my LV 6.1 application from another computer. I know there are ways to do this; but I also need for the remote computer to be able to change tab controls to view different sets of data without changing what the local operator is seeing. (I.e. a VNC solution will not work)
I was thinking that the easiest way to do this might be to just make a duplicate of the program and disable all of the controls I don't want them to be able to use, then just use global variables to pass the live data from the main program to the remote program. Since the remote program will not be able to change the state of any of the globals, there won't be any possibility of race conditions between the two programs. This way I can just pass the status of all of the indicators on the screen to the other program.
Will this actually work? The two programs will both have to be built into exe files; and will need to be able to run on a PC that only has the run-time environment installed.
Thanks for your help

I was originally thinking of using TCP/IP to impliment this functionality, but it seems like it would be simpler to have the main program publish all of its indicators that I want visible to datasocket, then in my remote program have it subcribe to those datasocket items on the main computer. Is this going to cause a major VI slowdown on my main PC I was just going to use the front panel datasocket functionality (i.e. right click and data operations -> datasocket connection)? There are probably 30+ indicators and some charts/graphs that I want to share between the programs.
