Menubar extra vanishes on waking up

I've found that sometimes when I close the lid on my Macbook causing it to sleep, when I open the lid to wake it up the menubar extras are gone. It seems the only way I can get them back is to reboot.
Is this a known issue or have I done something wrong? Any suggestions?

Try deleting com.apple.systemuiserver.plist in "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences", and, if you have it, com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist (where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string) in "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost".
Then log out and back in again. You may need to go to System Preferences to put back the menu items you want to display.

  • Menu Extras Vanished

    I updated 10.4.9 > 10.4.11 with the combo updater.
All the Apple Menu Extras promptly vanished. They won't come back when turned on in the individual prefPanes.
Repaired permissions, repaired with Disk Utility, yadda, yadda, yadda ...
An earlier thread of this name, now archived with no solutions that worked, suggested deleting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
... but it doesn't help. Ditto logging into another account.
Has anyone out there ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM and solved it?
    Thanks!

I'm guessing you updated over an already corrupted system. The only solution is to Archive and Intall provided the drive is OK and has sufficient space:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Are you sure you're missing that file? (If so, I don't want to know how you might have deleted that.) The battery display in the menu bar is normally controlled by the "Energy Saver" panel of System Preferences.

  • Values of dynamic selections for LDB DDF

    Hi
I have to customize a SAP standard program which is using LDB-DDF. As per client requirement, we have to add a few select statement and there we have to add the selection criteria of dynamic selections.
The problem I am facing is that I dont know how and where i can track the values given in the dynamic selection screen.
I did some research and I found out that values entered in the dynamic selections is stored in complex data object (deep structure) but I am not able to find it where and how we can use it.
The name of the SAP standard program is RFDZIS00.
    Thanks in advance
    Bhav

    Hi,
In SE36-> DDF-> select the Selections radio button.
Menubar Extras->Selection Views-> Here you can change the "origin of view" which is created by SAP or we can create our own views under "origin of view" CUS.

  • 10.4.11 MacBook Pro

I have a Linksys WAP with WPA. Intermittenly this laptop won't connect with an error saying "The selected network uses an Access Control List to restrict access and your device is not on the list". Completely wrong as the access point doesn't even HAVE mac filtering enabled. Since 10.4.11, I can no longer join the wireless network at all. This machine is dual booting with Boot Camp into Windows XP, and the macbook connects fine when running Windows XP. Anyone have any ideas on what to check for? I've deleted and added the network to no avail.

Agreed....I saw firsthand how 10.4.11 hosed a laptop here..all the menubar icons vanished including the time. The accepted answer was to to an erase and install...something I've seen a lot of here in the forums. The "interesting" effects of 10.4.11 plus the general bugginess of 10.5.1 have me wondering now about Apple...something I haven't had to do in a long time.

Suppose a particular equipment had undergone several dismantlings under various Functional location/Equipments and presently it is not installed anywhere.
Such equipments can be searched through AVLB system status in IH08.
Go to the Master data of any such equipment and in the Menubar Extras-->Usagelist will give you the information you wanted in ALV format.

  • Upgrading to SL deleted one of my extra accounts?

I just upgraded to SL on my Macbook. It seems to have worked fine overall, but a few odd things happened. The main one I'm concerned about is that I had an account called Guest, and it seems to have completely vanished. I had another extra account with a different name that is still there, and most importantly my main account is still there. If I don't get that Guest account back, I won't lose anything irreplacable, but I did have some settings in there that would be tedious to re-do (I had it set up to email me a photo of whoever used it). The only thing I can think of is that Snow Leopard seems to have an option for Guest access, and maybe because of that it deleted my other account, but I had manually named that account Guest, it wasn't any sort of official "guest account". I also don't like the warning that logging out of the official guest account deletes all data, so I don't want to use it. I'd rather have my own guest account.
I do have Time Machine backups. Is there any way I can use those to get that account with its settings back? It is also just really worrying that it did this in the first place-- what if I HAD had something important in there?
Also, SL changed my background picture to the default, and it didn't do that on our other macbook pro. Just weird...

    (a) While that does make sense, I'd rather not have it made out like its my fault-- if that name was going to cause problems there obviously should have been a warning either when I named it that or when I upgraded. It can't be that uncommon of an idea, to have a guest account named guest. I don't specifically recall options to make an official guest account under my previous system, but maybe they were there and I just didn't use them. I'm surprised that would cause problems-- the system should have some way of knowing what kind of account it is besides the user-generated name of the account, and if it has no other way of knowing, then it should stop you from using its special names.
    (b) Now that you mention it, there IS a folder under Users called "guest1" but it won't let me open any of the folders within that (except the one called Public which is empty), it says I don't have permission, which doesn't make sense since I'm logged in as an administrator. I also can't log into that account since its gone, so what do I do about those folders?
That account ought to be backed up by time machine pre-snow leopard, so is there a way to create a new account and restore from that old account? Or is that more hassle than its worth?

  • Extra Zeros in iCal

I'm sure the solution is simple but...my wife's iCal calendar has started adding an extra two zero's to the time in all .ics events. An appointment made for 9:00am displays as 9:00 00am. When I drag the item to the desktop and look at it with quicklook it displays as 9:00 00am. When I import the item into Entourage it displays as 9:00 00am.
Every item in iCal now displays this way so I looked at her iCal preferences. The drop down list in "day starts at" now shows the times as 8:00 00AM! I went to her "date and time preferences" and turned off the display of seconds in her menubar clock with no effect.
Does anyone know where these extra zeros (or seconds) are coming from? Or more importantly, how to turn them off?

    oldrick,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First of all try refreshing the com.apple.iCal.plist file. You will find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Quit iCal, drag the .plist file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior.
If that is unsuccessful, open System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats, and choose, or change the appropriate region. Then check/change the "Times" formats that you are using.

  • Help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Blank screen after waking from sleep (OSX 10.6)

    Same as question here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2672662?threadID=2672662
... which is archived, so can't add this to that thread.
This occurs on a 13" MacBook Pro, and the problem has been largely persistent during the 16 months I've been using this Mac. I generally perform updates as soon as they're available (to within a few days), so whatever the current release is - that's where this problem is happening.
    What happens:
If the machine is put to sleep by unplugging the display adapter and power plug, then when it's wakened again with an external monitor as the main display, the screen is empty -- not black, but blank. This also sometimes, but not always, happens when just waking the machine by opening the lid.
    What's really happening:
The login field is being displayed in an area that's not on the current screen.
How I know that / one workaround:
If I wait until the machine is clearly awake (i.e., the screen is still blank but plainly displaying black instead of just being dead -- alternately, when I can see the mouse pointer), and then just type the password and hit the ENTER key, the machine will typically start.

    A little update:
I reset the SMC but that made no difference. I restarted in Safe Mode and the problem seemed to vanish. So I restarted in normal mode again. I was hoping that the clearing of caches, etc that is done in Safe Mode might have solved the problem. Sadly it didn't.
However, I have now quit several items that run on startup and I think the problem may have gone. I will reintroduce them one by one in a bid to discover the culprit. Currently under suspicion is Dropbox, Audiogalaxy, LastFM and Xmarks. Possibly it's none of the above. I'll keep you posted.

  • I downloaded the Special Edition of 'Avatar' with the included 'Extras'... I use to see them in my iTunes library, but, can no longer locate them anywhere on my computer or in the iTunes library files! What happened?

I purchased 'Avatar' The Special Edition with the included Extras with a gift card. I had enough money in my account to cover this purchase. I only got to watch the 'Extras' for one or two times, and now, they have vanished! They no longer appear in my iTunes library or anywhere on my computer! Where are they and how do I regain access? The movie, itself, is still in the library...only the downloaded 'Extras' are gone!

Visibility of the Podcasts section is controlled from within the Edit > Preferences dialog.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    Missing tracks
Typically this can happen because a file or folder is accidentally shunted to the wrong location. iTunes can also get confused if it expects to be talking to an external drive which isn't there. If will often reset the default media folder location and may have trouble finding files in the old folders.
Select one of your tracks that is missing in action. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Cancel when asked to try to locate the file, then look at the location given on the summary tab. This where iTunes thinks the file ought to be? Now find out where it actually is. Post back the two locations for comparison. I should be able to give you some steps to reconnect everything once I can determine which of the things that might have gone wrong is most likely in your case.
When you get it all working make a backup!
