Comparing ABAP development process with Model Driven Architecture concept
My Background
I am a postgraduate student writing a Masters Degree Dissertation titled An Investigation into how compatible ERP Development Process is with Model Driven Development Philosophy: A SAP R/3 Case Study.
The aim of this project is to compare ERP system development process with Model Driven Development (MDD) and to identify whether and how they can be used together. Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is Object Management Groups (OMG) flavour of the MDD philosophy and is the paradigm that will be used here.
I have chosen SAP R/3 as my case study in order to narrow the research and want to explore the development processes/cycle involved in using ABAP/4 to reconfigure/customize SAP R/3 system during implementation.
An overview of the MDA concept according to OMG is given below. Following this, Ive provided some questions that are open to discussions.
Overview of the MDA Concept
The Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is an approach to software systems development that separates the specification of system functionality from the specification of the implementation of the functionality on a specific technology platform. The MDA concept provides an open, vendor-neutral approach to system interoperability.
A recent study by the Middleware Company summarizes MDA paradigm as a development process that makes use of the following steps:
1. Secure business requirements for an application.
2. Develop UML diagrams for the domain model, independent of any particular technology (J2EE, Microsoft .NET, CORBA, etc). This UML model represents the core business services and components. This UML model is called Platform Independent Model (PIM) because it is completely technology-independent and will be the same regardless of whether you decided to use J2EE or .NET. You develop this UML model using UML modelling capabilities of an MDA-specific modelling tool.
3. Build UML diagrams for the application, specific to a particular technology (J2EE, for example). This UML model will have design patterns. This UML model is called Platform Specific Model (PSM). You can build this manually, or you can generate much of it using an MDA tool and hand-tune only pieces of it that require customisation.
4. Finally, generate the application code using an MDA tool. That is to say, instead of writing the application by hand based on the UML model, you generate the majority of it from the UML diagrams.
To develop an application using MDA, it is necessary to first build a PIM of the application, then transform this, using a standardised mapping into a PSM, and, finally, map the latter into the application code.
A mapping is a set of rules and techniques used to modify one model in order to get another model. In MDA, mappings are used for transforming:
1) PIM to PIM. This transformation is used when models are enhanced, filtered or specialized during the development lifecycle without needing any platform dependent information. One of the most obvious mappings is the analysis to design models transformation. PIM to PIM mappings, are generally related to model refinement.
2) PIM to PSM. This transformation is used when the PIM is sufficiently refined to be projected to the execution infrastructure. The projection is based on the platform characteristics. Describing these characteristics should be done using UML description. Going from a logical component model to a commercial existing component model is a kind of PIM to PSM mapping.
3) PSM to PSM. This transformation is needed for component realization and deployment. PSM to PSM mapping are generally related to platform dependent model refinement.
4) PSM to PIM. This transformation is required for abstracting models of existing implementations in a particular technology into a platform-independent model. This procedure often resembles a mining process that is hard to be fully automated. It may be supported by tools, though. Ideally, the result of this mapping will match the corresponding PIM to PSM mapping.
Questions/Discussions
1. What specific stages are involved in development using ABAP/4? (e.g., requirements gathering, analysis, design, coding, etc)
2. Do these stages fit into any traditional software development lifecycle? (e.g. waterfall model, v-model, etc)
3. Which of the stages in (1) above best describes the Platform Independent Model (PIM) of the MDA concept above?
4. Which of the stages in (1) above best describes the Platform Specific Model (PSM) of the MDA concept above?
5. How does the Accelerated SAP roadmap relate to the MDA concept above?
6. Assuming theres a change in business requirements of a company that could lead to reconfiguring/customizing the R/3 system, how is this achieved? For instance, if a model has earlier been developed for that particular process, how does the change in the model affect coding/modification?
7. How is coding achieved with respect to the reconfiguration of the business models or reference models?
8. Are all coding manually done or are there tools in the ABAP Workbench that enable codes to be generated automatically from the models of the system?
9. How much time is spent in coding compared to developing business models like EPC models?I've also read about the SAP Composite Application Framework (CAF).
But it seems that it's only for Java development.... -
Reusable Authentication module with page fragments
Hi,
I have an authentication module(as ADF library) with page fragments in an ADF task flow and trying to reuse in other ADF apps.
In the consuming application , i have a login page with the resuable authentication task flow dragged and dropped into a region and the ADF library added to the project.
When i enable the ADF security for the consuming application, the region does not show up when i run it.
i have anonymous role assigned to the Auth module's page fragment's def file and the task flow itself.
If i remove it, the components with the region show up.
Could you help me on what am i doing wrong with ADF security.
Without a reusable ADF library and having the authentication module built into the consuming app, everything works fine.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am using ADF & Jdev 11g Ps2.

You can treat the fragment as any page, its going to have its own pageDef that will be included automatically by the page containing its task flow within a fragment (assuming you're using the data control/component drag-drop feature in JDeveloper). This is actually one of the best working feature of 11g imho.

url-invoke-allowed is only required if the task flow itself is directly accessible from a browser (which is not the case at all if the task flow uses page fragments). To pass input parameters to a task flow that is embedded in a region and that has input parameters, you define the input parameters on the taskFlow Id that is created in the PageDef file of the containing page. Problem with model size in Visual Composer
Hello madam/sir,
We are using ECC 5.0 and VC 700.8.0.1. We got error message during
deployment "Error in compiling Flex application. Branch between 19217
and 228774 around line 0 exceeds 32K". When we delete several blocks in
the model, it works good. So tried to delete different blocks so we
think that the problem is not with specific block but with model size.
Our model is in one iView. We cannot use additional nested
iViews because we have HTML View blocks that cannot be in
nested iView (according to VC documentation). Is there any solution for
this error? What does it mean?

Sergey KozyrevI agree with Ashutosh, you have to remodeling your model. You can also try to restart VC and deploy your model again, this might also help sometimes (I had sometimes the issue, that I removed any components and then I get the 32K error, after restarting the error disappeared).
You can also check if you have any global entry list, which you do not use in your model, this also could help to reduce you model size.

You can't tell the lock status just from the model number. The same model can be sold locked or unlocked, or can be unlocked later. If you Restore via iTunes unlocked phones will get a message confirming the unlock.

Does worst case analysis work with model parameters?
The worst case analysis does not seem tow work with model parameters. I performed a worst case analysis on a simple one transistor amplifier stage. It gives correct answers for resistor tolerances, but for the transistor model parameters it never changes them. I did the same with a diode in the circuit and entered tolerances for the diode parameters and it never used the tolerances.
That's the same message I get. See attached circuit.

How do I access the web utility with model cisco sf302-08p ?
Hi,i have a problem with the model Cisco SB SF302-08PP Switch , i connect a cable rj45 to my pc and configure the adapter local area connection (ip address:192.168.1.252), the LEDs blink green, and go to the address bar and get the IP by default, which according to the manual is 192.168.1.254 and the result is: page not found. Is there any way to change the web utility? How do I access the web utility?
restore the switch by holding more than 30 seconds and try accessing with ip 192.168.1.254. username and password is "cisco". before change your base ip to 192.168.1.2-253.try to ping and check the connectivity

ONL category needs 100 points. If it don't have enough points then i need to borrow from OFL category which i'm doing and populating into tbl_summary table at parent profile level.
Now i need to insert data into tbl_link table at profile level with howmany points used, expired based on tbl_summary table. Rule is at the end of month if we add points for each profile in tbl_link table it should come as 0.

Can someone help with the query. I googled about looping in sql and came to know that Oracle has a feature MODEL to loop in SQL, but i don't have idea on using MODEL clause.

Can someone help with the query. I googled about looping in sql and came to know that Oracle has a feature MODEL to loop in SQL, but i don't have idea on using MODEL clause.

I've used some scripts I've found on these forums to create a mortgage amortization statement. What I am trying to accomplish is getting the script to run a calculation or use a value within a table based upon the value in that table.
Here are the two tables:

Problem with models in the enterprise service builder
Hi all,
I get this message from the enterprise service builder, when i double click on one of the models on the tree on the left of the builder itself.
the message says:
Error Initializing Business Modeling
Initialization of business modeling cannot be started. You cannot work with business modeling. Check tht all required configutarion objects are available
i made all the wizards suggested in /people/werner.steyn/blog/2008/03/03/how-to-look-like-a-hero-with-netweaver-ce-esr-sr

Motion Menus - swapping video with image
I'm using Encore CS3. My client wants all of the buttons to be TVs with video of "snow" on their screens. Then when you highlight the button the snow changes to a photo. I can do the TVs and the snow, but I'm starting to wonder if this switch on highlight is possible. Any thoughts?
What about doing a Motion Menu with the TV sets and the static (a Motion Menu, with no real Sub-picture Highlights), then linking each Button to another Menu, that is identical, except that its the real menu and uses the Poster Frame from the actual Timeline? For each TV set, youd have to have an otherwise identical Menu, that had one real Button on it. If you had four TV sets, then youd have to link to four real menus, and then have the remaining Buttons on that Menu, link to an otherwise identical Menu with the corresponding Button live. A lot of Menus, and the 1GB limit might come into play, but would this not work? It would be a lot of linking and a lot of Menus (a really good flowchart would be a necessity). To simplify it a bit, one could link the end of each Timeline back to the first Menu (with the static), rather than allow navigation from any of the real Menus, except to that Timeline activated from the static Menu. Not sure if I got this concept across clearly.

Following some recommendations I already created a "Dummy"-WD Component with a "do nothing"-method in the Model-DC which I then call in the UI-DCs wdDoInit() to instantiate the model, but without any success.
