Merge .vhd and .avhd files

Is there anyway to merge a disk's .vhd and it's .avhd metadata?
It's hard to make a differencing disk when the VM i'm making the base from never seem to update it's (empty) .vhd file.

Please note that this is not a supported method...it is kind of a hack, but it works....
I think it is also worth noting that I am using Hyper-V Manager, and not SCVMM, and I did not have a branched snapshot scenario.  In other words, I never reverted back to a snapshot and then took later snapshots, thus "branching" the differencing files...
With that said...I don't think you have a lost cause if you are out of disk space...
The configuration for each VM is an .XML file...If you delete that .XML file, Virtual Machine Manager loses all knowledge of it (Please note a status of "Saved" complicates this more, but not worth going into now since you mentioned that you could shut down the VMs)  Please also note that you will be recreating this VM, so you will need the information regarding number of Processors, and amount of memory, and the like.  I was also told that this could cause you to need to activate the license again, but I did not have this problem.
In order to delete the .XML file for the VM, the Virtual Machine Manager Service has to be stopped.  Before doing that, all VMs should be shut down gracefully if possible.
Here are the steps:
1. Shut down all VMs gracefully
2. Stop the service using services.msc, or stop the service using the Server Manager
3. Let any merge jobs complete that can
4. Delete (or rename for those of you carefull folks) the .xml file for the VM in question
5. Restart the Virtual Machine Management services...Your guest will not be listed.
6. Find the GUID for the VM in question...and delete the .xml configuration file.
7. Find all of the .avhd files for the machine
8. Move as many .avhd files as you need off to another drive to free up some room, but leave the last 2(very important to start with the last .avhd files and work your way backwards)
9. Change the extension on the LAST .avhd file to .vhd
10. In Hyper-V manager, chose edit disk
11. Browse for the renamed file
12. Chose to Merge the file (It will automatically look for the parent of the .avhd file...this information is included in the child file itself)...the merge will merge all information from the Child into the Parent, and THEN delete the child (this is where your space problem came in, btw)
13. Move the parent of that file (the next oldest .avhd file) back to its ORIGINAL location (very important to put it back where it was)
14. Repeat as needed
Always rename the newest Child to have a .vhd extention, because the "Edit Disk" wizard only sees .vhd files, and alway merge into the Parent, and not to a new file.
This way, you have the room you need to merge the files, and eventually, you will arrive at the original .vhd file, and have only one virtual hard drive.
After all of this, just re-create the Virtual Machine, and use the combined .vhd file in the Wizard...

  • Using DFS-R to replicate VHD and VHDX Files

    Hello -
I am trying to find a solution to replicate VHD files and VHDX files between two data centers. I'm deploying the solution using Windows Server 2012.
The VHD files are not virtual machines, they are simply storage areas (one for each user) that contain user documents and other files.
The users will potentially log on to terminal servers in two locations and I'd like the VHD files to be accessible from both locations. The VHD files will mount during the logon sequence into a mount point within the users profile (or some other accessible
area within the file system). This is a bit like user profile disks, but more user data disks.
Has anyone attempted the replication of VHD files before using DFS-R, and are there any things I should be aware of?
Will DFS-R support delta replication of VHDs? If a user has a 500 MB presentation, within the VHD file, and changes a single line of text, I'd prefer for only the changed blocks to synchronize.
I don't believe DFS-R supports replicating open files, so I understand that the data won't be in sync until the VHD file us unmounted, but thats okay.
    Cheers, I'd welcome any feedback.

If you don't own a pretty fat pipe between the data centres (and it comes free of charge) that's not the best idea. For a reason: DFS-R does use compression only paired with per-file changed block tracker no deduplication see...
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771058.aspx
...so at the end of the day you'll replicate TONS of non-required information. What you really need to do: deploy a third-party replication solution layered up and working on top of the volume(s) where your VHD/VHDX files are stored.
Will DFS-R work to replicate VHD/VHDX? YES
Is DFS-R optimal for VHD/VHDX replication scenario? NO
    Hope this helped :)

  • How do I successfully merge MXF and DV files in a sequence?

I have a Panasonic with a P2 card (and DV film).  I have a reader.  I have successfully transferred all the files to my computer, and imported them into PP6, no problem.  My only issue is this: if I want to consolidate the MXF files with the camera's film (DV) files in the same sequence, I have issues.
If I make the sequence compatible for the MXF, the DV files are small-in-a-box size.  If I make the sequence NTSC DV, the DV's are great, but the MXF frames are over the top huge (we're talking nose hairs and cropped head tops)  I've played around a bit with some formats, but I keep getting the same problem.
I'm betting there's one in here that somebody already figured out that works for both file types in a sequence.  Or...is it during export that the change might happen?  Really would like to be able to use both media types in one sequence if possible.  Is it?  If I'm going to need to convert the files to say, .mov, am I going to lose enough quality to care about, or is that totally counter-productive.  I downloaded a trial version of "Wondershare"  as advertised on the internet as an MXF converter, but I tried it and it didn't seem to be able to work with the audio files (as they are separated in the MXF content folder)
Any input, much loved.  (I tried exporting the MXF separately to an .mov and re-importing, but it didn't seem to help).

No idea if this will help with your problem, but there is a CS6 Issue/Bug MXF http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1074489
Also, mixing SD and HD means that something has to give... and if you want everything at SD resolution, you may want to look up "interpret footage" in the help file, to "force" the HD video into the SD screen size (note that I do not mix video types, so I really can't give detailed instructions)
Also, if you export the MXF it would need to be into an SD file, not just another HD file of a different type

  • Having trouble merging powerpoint or word files in single PDF in acrobat X professional on mac book pro

    Hi
I am having trouble merging word and poerpoint files into single PDF by acrobat X professional on a mac book pro. Error says its not supported format. Why is that? It works perfectly on windows. Is the feature of merging office files not enabled in Mac version of software?

    Hi Adam,
Welcome to the forums. They've really helped my Mac learning-curve since first getting a Mac in late April.
It sounds to me from reading the different ways you want to use your computer that you would be very well suited for the Macbook. I have the Macbook Pro but I got it about 3 weeks before the Macbooks came out. And I was quite upset. I use my computer mainly for word editing, watching DVDs and picture management. I will have to admit the 15.4" screen is great for side-by-side document editing, but aside from that, I would think that for my needs the Macbook would have been perfect.
For the money I spent on the low end Macbook Pro I could have gotten the fastest Macbook with 2GB RAM. Instead I have the slowest MBP with only 512MB of RAM which was painfully slow when multitasking. I upgraded to 1GB and it was a huge difference.
But really... I never use the video card. And since I love the portability of the Macbook Pro, another 2 inches off the body would be AMAZING since the 15" is a little big...
    That's my 2 cents.

  • VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.
If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.
I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.
I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.
Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

I was having the same problem (minus using ReRF, I am just using NTFS.) I think I finally discovered the "real" issue for me, and the solution. My VHD and VHDX file (tried both ways) has two partitions in it - being a virtual machine for Windows 7 that we
use to create images, it wound up having the small 'system reserved' partition, plus the normal OS partition.
I think what was happening is that only the first partition was being looked at (the small one) and so the optimization, etc, was never happening on the large one. Which would explain the way it came back in just one second (less, really.)
The way I found to get around this was to use a new feature in 2012 - I right-clicked on the VHDX and chose "Mount." This attached *two* drives (can't seem to choose the drive letters.) Then in a "My Computer" window, used the ribbon option "Drive Tools
-> Manage" and chose the "Optimize" tool. Ran the optimization on both of the newly attached drives, closed that out, and then ejected one of the drives (both of them detached when I did.)
Finally, when I ran the "compact" in HyperV Manager, it took a bit longer and actually decreased the size of the VHDX file (in my case, from 31GB to 20GB.)
    Hope this helps someone!

  • Hyper-v VM - merged .avhd files - now cant start as missing .vsv file

    Hi All,
Yesterday i shut down one of our VMs to allow the snapshots to merge and then tried to start the VM but got the following error:
    'VM' could not initialize.
An attempt to initialize VM save state failed.
'VM' could not initialize. (Virtual Machine ID ........)
'VM' could not create or access saved state file E:\....... .vsv
When i looked for one i realised that a .vsv file doesnt exist for the VM. I thought the .vsv file was a temporary file and that the VM should happily start without it?
    Any help is much appreciated!

    Hi jrussellcj,
"I thought the .vsv file was a temporary file and that the VM should happily start without it?"
Yes , if all of the snapshots are merged properly , there will be no .bin and .VSV remained for that VM .
Please check the snapshots' folders to ensure that there is no files .
    And I agree with Philip's suggestion .
If the merged VHD file can works well in a new VM then you may no longer need the old VM .
    Best Regards

  • Merging and storing files and folders on external hard drive

Merging and storing files/folders  - I have a MacBookPro3,1 &  a MacBookAir1,1 both running OS10.6.8 and then files from backups and archives on a LaCie 250 and LaCie 500. I want to improve my productivity by merging all files/folder into one place.
I have a WesternDigital 1T to move files/folders to and do my duplicate deletion work.
The end result I'm seeking is to have all my files/folders stored on the LaCie 500  - with space for expanding iPhoto Library and Movies then that LaCie 500 Backed up on the 1T.   As my computers are older models the internal drives are smaller - MBA 80GB and MBP160. The Air in particular gets full up quickly and doesn't work efficiently.
What steps/software have you had experience with, and would recommend to merge all my files/folders, delete duplicates, and get it all in one place - including iTunes, iPhoto.
What are the pros and cons of keeping & working with files/folders on an external drive rather than on the internal drive?
I'm aware of sluggishness in iPhoto if the library is too large, and looked into iPhoto Library Manager as an option for my photos.
Thanks in advance for your help with this way past due Spring cleaning activity.

  • Merging PDFs and then saving them as one file in Leopard

Would someone please tell me how I can merge PDF files into one PDF file. I have been able to drag and drop them together in Preview. I would love to be able to save the merged files into one file. Any ideas. I have read a lot online about this possibility in Snow Leopard, but I can't seem to save the dang file.
    Help.

Open the first PDF. Open the tray so you can see the file on the left. Drag the other PDFs onto the first file in the tray. You can't just drag into the tray window anymore, you have to drag onto the file itself to merge. Save the file with new name.
Macmost has a good podcast on this subject that came out about a week ago. Shows other PDF tricks with Preview as well.

  • DPM - 2012 R2 - Incomplete VHD Recovery (AVHD instead of VHD)

    Hi!
I want to recover a VHD file from a HyperV VM, backed up on tape.
The recovery ends with success, but i can't see the recovered VHD of 7GB.
Instead we have an AVHD file with a size of 670 KB.
DPM says we have a 7GB VHD file on the tape. But while recovering, i can see it only transfers 0.75MB.
We tried to recover this VHD from other tapes => same issue
Recovers of other VHD perform well.
    Any idea ?
    Thanks

VHD or Virtual Hard Disks are a god way to create backup and work on several operating systems without the pressure to install a new physical hard drive or partition. The Virtual hard disk can effectively host NTFS, FAT, exFAT and UDFS file systems while
supporting the standard disk as well as operations. VHD is useful when developers or testers need to check a particular software/application in different operating systems. It lets them install and use several operating systems without buying individual hard
    disks.
Moreover, Windows 7 uses VHD for creating complete backup of the system. Users can mount the VHD in operating system and utilize these for backup creation and many other related functions.

  • AVHD files not being deleted by Hyper-V when DPM backs up virtual machines

    Hi,
I understand DPM uses checkpoints to backup Hyper-V virtual machines.
We have seen a few instances whereby the AVHD files that are created at the time DPM backs up the VM are not being deleted on the CSV disk.
There are no checkpoints associated with the virtual machine in Hyper-V settings.
We did delete one of these AVHD files on a non-production system and it was successful, the AVHD files are not being used by the virtual machine.
Is it safe to delete these AVHD files? Anyone experienced anything similar?

    Hi
Could you please let su know if you have acrried out any ILR operations?
When you recover a VHD of a virtual machine that has Hyper-V snapshots, .avhd files are not displayed in the
Recoverable Items pane, but DPM recovers the parent VHD and all the associated .avhd files.
Just want to confirm that these avhd files are not coresponding to recovery process.

PDF does not contain columns, rows, formats, styles, or other aspects of word processing or spreadsheet file formats.
This is because PDF is decidedly not a word processing or spreadsheet file format or something "like" one of those.
(see ISO 32000 for what PDF "is")
What can optimize the export of PDF page content is to start with a well-formed tagged PDF (ISO 14289-1, PDF/UA-1 compliant).
Without that export is what it is and one performs whatever content cleanup is needed using the native application for the export file (MS Word or Excel).
