Merging netlet rules

We are looking for a workaround of a feature in portal V3 that was remove in V6
in our portal 3 configuration we added an imapservername attribute to the portal 3 profile and used external ldap mappings to map it to mailhost. We then used $iwtUser-imapservername for the TARGET and it acted as a variable to automatically plug in the right value for the user. The reason we were using this is we have more then 1 imaps servers.
What we have tried so far is to create a 2 new roles with the netlet rules defined in them, but are unable to meake them appear for the users. What are we missing.

I am not aware about a way to do value substitutions as originally asked, but getting netlet rule from multiple roles to be combined in a users dynamic profile is simple enough.
Simply go to the instance of the srapNetletService template that is in your organization and look for the "cosAttribute: sunnetletrules default" element. Add "merge-schemes" to this: "cosAttribute: sunnetletrules default merge-schemes".
Now any roles with service templates for Netlet will have their rules merged. Carefull though as the this now means that priority processing for this attribute is essentially discarded.
Do make the merge-schemes update persistant , i.e. when you register the netlet service with a new org or suborg add that to the cosOptions element of the srapNetletService schema definition in the ou=services,ou=DAI.... area.

Close Netlet automatically on log out

Simple tip that was passed on to me by my iPlanet SE on how to close the
little Netlet Launch window automatically when logging out of iPS...
modify menubar.html - found in
/etc/opt/SUNWips/desktop/your_template_dir/iwtDesktop
Change the "action=logout" to also perform a Netlet window close like this:

Please note that the first parameter in window.open is TWO single quotes
(which represents a null URL). This may incorrectly look just like a
double-quote with some fonts.
This bit of code could be improved to first check to make sure the Netlet
window is open before closing it. As it is now, if the Netlet is already
closed, it will flash up a new empty Netlet window and immediately close it,
but this happens so fast, it is barely noticed.
Also, this only works if the user logs out, and not if they close the iPS
window by other means.
I think it would be great to close all orphaned windows created in an iPS
session, such as those created by Netlet rules for telnet, Citrix, etc.
But that's for another day to look at...

Make Netlet run automatically when login on

In Portal Server 3 the Netlet started automatically when a user logged in. Is it possible to set up this in Portal Server 6 as well, not having to start the Netlet manually by pressing one of the Netlet links?

Yes, it is possible. Use static Netlet rules.
If this for some reasons doesn't work - use dynamic
rules and start Netlet automatically via JavaScript on
desktop page load.

What must I do to get the netlet to load?

Ok.. I didn't install our portal server so perhaps there were some configuration steps that may have been missed .. but ..
Netlet is an option for my desktop. I chose it. I then go into edit mode and I try to set it up to telnet out to a remote server.
I try getting it to allow me to ftp into the portal.
It's always in the loading mode!
Nothing I do seems to work...
Can anyone suggest some simple steps that I can take to get this thing to work?

For ex., use a telnet to test the netlet.
Configure this using the netlet channel and do an edit and add the
known telnet ( for ex., pick your unix machine where u installed portal server as a test case).
Then from the browser perspective pick the Java Console. This
will tell u the java exception thrown when there is an issue.
otherwise this will tell u the netlet rule which is using etc.,
and Portalserver admin guide is the best place to additional
information if u land into any issues in configuring it.
Keep in mind that current Portal Server 3.0 version doesn't support
Java plugins like 1.3 etc., Hence the java console debugging. Which
will tell u what version of java used with the browser.

Trouble creating an custome netlet channel

I am trying to create a channel that will have a certain number of application links appear on it. Each application link should open up a telnet netlet session with tghe appropriate server. Each link will call an applet and the applet will be responsible to opening up the telnet session with the corrent machine. I am able to open the correct netlet ports and have the reflection applet load for each application. But what the applet loads I am never able to connect to the server correctly. Either the telnet session tells me i am disconnected or i am left looking at a blank telnet screen. When i look at the java console i see that all of the correct ports have been opened. This is what the java console looks like:

I see you have configured 5 netlet rules. All the netlet rules seem to have the same name what are your netlet rules ?
Also your applet would not have to connect to the server in a format like this ..
In the netlet channel you would have to go and add a target host for each of the netlet rules.
for rule 1 you would have to add a target machine name like hostname.domain.com then do a
telnet localhost 30000 and see if gets forward to that hostname.

Unable to telnet from iportal's netlet

Hi,
This error is Thrown to indicate that a malformed URL has occurred. Either no legal protocol could be found in a specification string or the string could not be parsed.
You Might have tried connecting the telnet through open portal.Try connecting it through gateway.

Proxy autoconfigure script, netlet and ie5.5

I've setup a netlet rule to access an internal proxy server through the netlet. The proxy settings in the browser are configured using an autoconfigure script. This script looks like:

thanks for the quick response. While browsing trough IE settings I rembered the buggy, ill implemented JVM from Microsoft. After configuring IE to use the SUN JVM everything works fine. I will report this problem to SUN and hope they will find a solution. I will include the output of the JAVA console. For now (we're on a tight schedule) I have a workaround.. Use Netscape or Mozilla or IE and the SUN JVM.

How to configure netlet for applet

I'm trying to create a netlet rule that will allow me do download an applet from server 1, download all the session configuration from server 1 thrue the port 8999, then when all th session config is downloaded it will start a telnet connection to server 2 thrue port 23.
server 1 ip is 207.207.1.85 and the server 2 ip is 159.206.32.253
here what i have so far as a rule

The following will help you to configure netlet rules for an applet . You can create this rule either for a domain, role or for a specific user.
If you are downloading an applet from a different server than the Portal server platform server, you have to use the <local Netlet listen port:applet server:target server port> to specify the local Netlet listen port and the target server port that the applet is coming from.

To make this rule show up in the Netlet provider, you then Click on the Domain (Role and User, if applicable) Applications -> Desktop link, and under the 'Channels' heading, Select the 'iwtNetletProvider' channel, and click on the 'Edit Channel' button. Under the 'Targets' section, add a new target to the Netlet Provider like this:

Hiding the Netlet Channel

We use a ..few... netlet rules but do not enable the netlet for user configuration. In ps3.x we were able to hide the Netlet channel by removing all of the Desktop properties under Domain -> Policy -> Desktop.
When we try the same technique in PS6.2 (although done a bit differently) if the Netlet channel isn't visible on the user's Desktop the netlet doesn't load ... along with its port listeners & forwarders.
Even with all visible buttons and boarders "false" - if the Netlet channel is minimized it won't load.
Any ideas out there?

We hided the netlet in a hidden frame:
-Create an index.html somewhere.

Citrixwi channel using netlets

I have Portal 6.0 SRA running with the Citrixwi channel from citrix installed. We are trying to get this running using netlets as a proof of concept.
I can see the published apps in the channel, but they will not launch.
I have changed and added all the rewriter rules, javascript, and modified NFuse.conf to use alternate address and IPv4-port.
My citrix admin tells me that altaddress is set to- default - 127.0.0.1:11001 on the server. (I have only one server in the test farm that is used as the data collector and citrix box.) He said he ran altaddr /set 127.0.0.1:11001 then rebooted the box for good measure. Then ran altaddr to check that it was there.
I can connect to the citrix box on localhost port 11001 for testing, but when I run from portal I am getting the following:

Did you map the 11001 port in the Citrix channel configuration: you need both a netlet rule (to create a listener port) and then a Citrix channel rule to map the port to a backend citrix server.
I can confirm we're using it with the alternate address set to 127.0.0.1 ok.
Still the problem is not yet to the Citrix connection. It is still the citrix channel who has a problem generating the ICA file in my opinion. If you look at the code of routeica.jsp then you will see that it is like a hack . Try the first time (it can work or not).

Using more than one attached style sheet

Run Applet through gateway

Hi all;
We have a Web application behind gateway and portal6.0. Web application has applet embedded HTML pages.
After user logged into portal, the applet is downloaded with correct params and codebase. One of the params is httpServerName, which becomes https://gatewayURL/http://serverName per rewriter as configured.
But the applet has problem talking to the server through gateway and we don't know why. It works fine without gateway.
Could the double URL's in the httpServerName be a problem when applet uses it? The applet class is from vendor and we can not modify it. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the applet hasn't been designed to work with SSL, I don't think you can do this.
A workaround may be to use the Netlet for your applet. Ie. specify a Netlet rule for your applet and set its httpServerName to localhost.

I assume you are talking about the citrix channel...
Check that you fixed the rewriter according to the citrix channel installation instructions. If I remember it correctly you should change two rows and add another in the rewriter and then restart the gateway.
