Messages locks up on Yosemite

My 2010 15" MBP won't run Messages. I *think* this started when my laptop crashed a couple of times, but I can't say for sure.
Messages had been working fine, but now when I click on it in the dock, the Messages window never appears, but it chews up a core (reported as 99.9%).
If I leave it running then I end up seeing the following messages in the console:
22/04/2015 15:46:18.164 WindowServer[176]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Messages" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
22/04/2015 15:46:32.165 WindowServer[176]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Messages" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call.
22/04/2015 15:47:45.000 kernel[0]: process Messages[11975] thread 573837 caught burning CPU! It used more than 50% CPU (Actual recent usage: 99%) over 180 seconds. thread lifetime cpu usage 90.055734 seconds, (87.894891 user, 2.160843 system) ledger info: balance: 90009103052 credit: 90013217585 debit: 4114533 limit: 90000000000 (50%) period: 180000000000 time since last refill (ns): 90804090504
I tried deleting all the files matching ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat.*, suspecting that preferences had got corrupted, but that didn't make any difference.
Any ideas what to try next?
Thanks,
Neil

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Can't view messages on website after Yosemite upgrade

A friend built me a website some time ago and people can leave me messages.  After the Yosemite upgrade, I can still see a new message has come in but when I click the "view" button, nothing happens.  I can't open the message to read it.  I wondered if it was just my mac so I tried to view them on hubby's macbook.  Same thing.  We do both have adblock on our macs.
I dug out our old, Sony laptop and fired it up....running XP.  I logged into the website and clicked the view button on the messages.....they opened right up.  Does anyone have an idea what settings I need to change in Yosemite to be able to view my website messages?  Thanks

Once connected to the PC.. you will have to Sync the messages to see them on PC..
Open OVI Suite..Goto Sync-->Sync Now-->Messages...when the process is over, you will be able to see them in the OVI Suite.. Just syncing the messages may not show you senders' / receivers' name but only the numbers... so sync the contacts too...

how do I get rid of doubles of photos sent by an iPhone? When I try to trash them, I get the message 'locked' Thank you.

    Hi
    Thank you for the reply.
No I have not deleted anything, this all happened automatically when the trial period ended.
Other than an old version of Photoshop (version 7, for which I do have a serial number, I don't have any other Adobe software - just the reader which is now not working)
I was trialling Dreamwever but couldn't get started with it so am paying someone else to set up the website using Wordpress.

  • Messages not syncing between Yosemite and iPad

I've noticed that messages I send on my iPad seldom appear within messages on my Mac (Yosemite).    Or else they show up like a day or two later but it's not consistent.   Does anybody know how to get them to sync?
Also, I forgot to mention that the reverse is true, too, but less so.  Very inconsistent syncing.

  • Strange Message window behavior in Yosemite

This is difficult to describe, but in Yosemite, I have a problem with the Messages window moving about. Once I've changed focus to the Messages window, the next place I click will result in the Messages window moving to that location. It's almost as if drag lock is stuck on. I've checked trackpad and accessibility settings to make sure that all looks OK, and everything does.
I reported the issue when Yosemite was in Beta, and hoped the problem would be resolved with the official release, but not so much.
    Anybody else seeing this? Ideas?

    Hi,
I have a 2011 iMac rather than a MacBook listed in the first post.
I see in the other thread Harvtron also has a iMac which would suggest it is not Laptop related.
I don't have a Retina Screen which might have an impact of the version of Quartz used.
I have 10 other Accounts showing in separate Buddy Lists  and don't have this problem.
I did not use the Public Beta at any point.
I have tried closing the Buddy List windows (it does not log them out) so that I only have the Main Chat/Interface window and still cannot replicate this.

  • How to lock trash in Yosemite.

I found a great answer but unfortuntly the article attached was "over" my head so I need to have it a bit more step by step. Here is my issue.
I have a computer classroom with about 25 computers including my Macbook pro. I am currently upgrading to Yosemite in my Macbook Pro as the Remote desktop and airdrop and so many other "connectivity" issues are happening. Right now half my lab is running Mavericks and the other is on Yosemite. I am upgrading all to Yosemite to eliminate any issues.
I need to be able to "lock" the trash to eliminate students trashing work. There was a great article here with an explanation on how to do this through the Terminal. I am not this advanced and do not want to try this with out a step by step. Can someone explain this further please?
Again I want to be able to "LOCK" the trash can in the student log in accounts.
    Thank you!

  • Messages not working on Yosemite

So I've read through all the threads and everything and I can't figure out how to fix this problem.
My messages are not being delivered. Every time I send a message I receive a Not Delivered with an exclamation point.
I've deleted all the com.apple.ichat* message* and madd* files as instructed in previous threads.
It gave me a clean install for Messages but still doesn't work.
After restarting my computer I had to set up Messages again but still doesn't work.
When I sign in as a guest it works fine but not when I sign in my own account.
    Please advise.

    Back up all data.
Quit Messages if it’s running. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it and test after each of the following steps. If the problem isn't resolved, quit again and go on to the next step.
    Step 1
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
    If the box marked
              Keep login keychain unlocked
    is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain.
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select My Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them is marked with a red "X" as expired or invalid, delete it. Also delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name, whether valid or not.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
Log out and log back in.
    Step 2
Hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (some may not exist):
              Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
              Caches/com.apple.Messages
              Caches/com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent
              Containers/com.apple.iChat
              Containers/com.apple.soagent
              IdentityServices
Leave the Library folder open. Log out and log back in.
    Step 3
Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
              Messages
Note: you are not moving the Messages application. You’re moving a folder named “Messages.”
If Messages now works, delete the Messages folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Messages again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place.
    Step 4
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with any of the following strings:
              com.apple.iChat
              com.apple.ids
              com.apple.imdsmsrecordstore
              com.apple.imessage
              com.apple.imservice
Move them all to the Desktop. There may also be a file with the name "com.apple.imagent.plist". Move that to the Trash.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Log out and log back in. Test again. This time Messages should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes Messages to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Messages again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post your results.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of Steps 3 and 4, you can undo them completely by quitting Messages and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.

  • How mail messages are sorted in Yosemite

I have noticed an unwelcome change in the way mail items are presented in OS X 10.10 Yosemite.  Before, when I had messages sorted by date received and wanted to change the view to sort by sender, I could highlight a message, change the "sort by" dropdown to "from" and the same message would be highlighted, along with all other messages from that sender.  Now, when I change the sort key to "from", it takes me to the beginning of the list.  How can I restore the prior functionality so that I can highlight a message, change the sort key to "from" and see all the messages from that sender in date order?
    Thank you.

  • Problems with messaging locking up

I have had my Charge for about a year now and I don't have many complainants about it, but recently when using the text messaging it started locking up if there was a MMS that was included in the stream. The only way I have found to fix it is to delete the whole stream. I don't always want to do that and it is just a pain when it locks up. Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue?

I had a similar problem, but it didn't have anything to do with size of my library. The problem turned out when the iTunes application was in, what appears to be, an I/O loop. You see, I had a faulty USB hub with an iPod shuffle plugged into it. iTunes repeatedly tried to work with the device and stayed that way until I unplugged the shuffle.
I'm not saying this is the answer, but it is possible you have a loop occurring in iTunes where the application can't resolve a resource read. I hope that helps.
You can open a utility program called "Console" to look for any error messages generated by iTunes. What you want to look for is any message with the word iTunes in it. If the only one you find is "iTunes not responding", then look for any dubious messages that preceded those.
I wish I could be of further help.

  • "Searching for movie data" message locking up keynote

Using Keynote '09 on a Macbook Pro. Importing keynote files from a shared server. Files contain embedded video.
Never had issues with previous versions of Keynote on same machine. Now, after opening the files, they lock up and a message pop-up says "Searching for movie data in file "filename.mov""
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a preferences option that can diasable it? It happens every time I open the file, even after I have let the file previously run its course, which can take over an hour.
    Killing my productivity. HELP!!

I am also seeing this bug and often work on 400mb+ presentations that use larger screen sizes and have lots of video assets for work.   On large files I find that autosave is not ideal, and would also like a way to turn it off. The computer that was seeing the issue was running 10.7.5.  It was just updated to 10.8.2 so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it works better now.  Time will tell.
I also really hope that Apple gives us a real refresh on Keynote on the Mac.  As old as it is, it still ahead of Powerpoint.  But it wont stay that way forever standing still and nobody else has a better alternative that is as fast and flexible to work with.  They are squandering somthing special by letting it gather dust.
