Metadata Status Box

I am using Lightroom 4 and its working fine however today for the first time I noticed the following comments in the Metadata Status box which I don't understand and have not been able to find any help in my guidebook.
Metadata Status reads
All (2 Metadata Statuses) 29965
Has been changed 29836
Up to date 129
Is there a problem with my database that I don't know about and should I be concerned?

"Metadata Status" refers - as dj_paige has said - to writing the metadata to file (either true sidecar file or into the header of JPGs, TIFFs, PSDs and DNGs - but not into the image pixels!)
This "writing metadata to file" is a separate and additional saving of the metadata that are already saved in the Lr catalog. Lr saves everything you do in Lr instantly and automatically in its database (= catalog). Since it is not saved in the image pixels - as you probably know - it is called metadata.
In addition to the saving in the catalog there is the option of "writing metadata to file". But this option is not necessary for the function of Lr. It is a feature that enables users to see the Lr edits in Adobe Bridge.
The warning you are referring to means that the data in the catalog and in the file are not identical. Since Lr always uses the catalog (unless you do a "read metadata from file") your photos and the edits are safe and sound.
However, if you want to also save the metadata to file, go to the Catalog panel (just above the Folders panel) and select <All Photographs>. In the Grid View, press Ctrl / Cmd + A (letter A on your keyboard)  to select all of your photos. Then press Ctrl / Cmd + S to save the metadata for all selected photos to file. **) This will make the metadata in the catalog and in the file identical - for the moment. As soon as you do further editing in Lr, the metadata in catalog and file will again be different (for the edited photos). Naturally you can repeat the Cmd / Ctrl + S process for the edited photos.
I have this in my workflow: As soon as I have edited a bunch of photos, or at the end of the day, I go to the Grid View, select all newly edited photos and do Ctrl + S.
There is also a feature in Catalog Settings / Metadata tab to <Automatically write changes to XMP>. But I would recommend not to check this box because (a) it causes a constant reloading of TIFFs and PSDs in the Develop Module which is not harmful but annoying; and (b) there is an old bug that causes to send the "metadata warning" message when this box is checked.
**) Depending on the number of photos in your catalog this can take quite a while.

  • Metadata Status: Has been changed (how to find...)

I edited a lot of photos in Lightroom 2 and would like to use the command "Save Metadata to File".
However, I've not been able to parameterize a library filter enabling a search for all photos that have the field "Metadata Status" assigned to "Has been changed"!
I'm looking for a way to fill up the Library Grid for these changed photos, select them all, and do a "Ctrl-S" to update the metadata section of these photos in one batch.
Is it possible to to that? (I don't want to check the box "Automatically write changes into XMP" as it slows down LR).
    Thanks for any information!

    Thanks Lee!
Did not think it was that simple...

  • How do I use metadata text box in Aperture Book

When I hit the button for a text box, I get a text box. Likewise for a new photo box. What I really want is a metadata text box and when I hit that button nothing happens. I have tried it with a photo selected and on a blank page.
How do I use the metadata text box in Aperture books? BTW I am working on a small sized soft cover book.
    Powerbook G4 1.5   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

Do you have a copy of Illustrator installed?
Then just begin at page 1, read it and practice what you read. Step by step.
If you don't understand parts of it, dive into the manual as well or ask a question in this forum. But mind that not everybody has a copy of the Classroom in a book. So you need to ask your questions precisely and post screenshots of your artwork.

  • Ever Changing Metadata Status

I have LR 2 (on a Windows PC) set up to write all changes to XMP. Normally this works very well, but for some pictures the "Metadata Status" message in the Metadata panel constantly changes from "has been changed" to "..." to "Up to date" then back to "Has been changed" again. This happens in Library view when I am not touching the image.
It seems to happen randomly. If I exit LR and then return it has stopped.
The pictures in question seem to be fine, both to examine in LR, edit and also export.
Is this a known problem? Should I be concerned? It seems like a disk write to the image file or a data update to the catalog must be failing. But I have checked my hard drive and it seems healthy.
I wrote about this on my blog and even made an animated GIF http://bkkphotographer.wordpress.com/2009/09/17/the-case-of-the-ever-changing-status/

I’ve been playing with metadata and sidecar XMP files in order to try and learn the way Lr handles them. I’ve also read quite a bit about this subject and now I believe I understand the significance of these XMP files as an insurance in case anything goes wrong with the database, despite the fact that some relevant data is not included in the XMP file and would be lost in case of catalog (database) corruption.
So, I've done a very simple test:
    - created a new catalog;
    - imported 10 CR2 RAW files;
    - immediately after importing they all displayed (quite obviously) a “Metadata Status: Up to date”;
    - applied daylight as white balance to all of them in Quick Develop (“Metadata Status: Has been changed”); option to “automatically write changes to XMP” was off;
    - saved the metadata to XMP sidecar files (“Metadata Status: Up to date”);
    - closed Lr;
    - deleted de XMP files.
When I reopened this catalog, Lr shows the Metadata Status as “Up to date”, even though the XMP files are gone. It’s quite understandable that Lr has no way of knowing that the XMP files no longer exist since they were deleted outside of Lr. But if one tries to recreate the XMP files by saving them again Lr shows briefly a message that it is writing the files but none are actually created. Interesting enough I never get the “sidecar file missing” warning.
I’ve found just two ways of recreating these XMP files after deleting them: either creating empty files with the appropriate names matching the CR2 files or changing some metadata (e.g. adding a caption or title to all photos) before saving the metadata.
OK, some might be asking why deleting the XMP files in the first place? Well, files do get deleted by accident sometimes and could also be lost due to file corruption.
What I would like to understand is if one has a catalog that doesn't use XMP sidecars and at some point they are created (by choice or mistake), is there a way of reverting back and not using them?
Am I missing something or Lr is a little bit weak in handling these XMP sidecar files?
Also, has anyone reproduced this on Lr 3 beta?
    Any comments will be appreciated.

  • Smart-Collection (metadata status) not updated immediately

    Hi
I created a smart-collection that matches photos where their metadata status has changed on file system. So I changed the date with ExifToolGui (*click*). Closed the ExifTool and waited in LR 5.6 to see the smart-collection populated. But nothing happens. Photos only were added to this collection if I navigated to them in the library. Only the visible ones were added, so if I scrolled down, more photos were added. That's not really useful. And now, not even with navigating to them will put them in to that collection.
Other smart-collection for metadata changes in LR works like a charme.
    Restarting LR doesn't help.
    Windows 8.1 64bit
Does someone have an idea or can reproduce that behavior?

    Try this:
    - In the left-hand Catalog pane, select All Photographs.
    - Do Edit > Select All to select all photos.
    - Do Library > Find All Missing Photos.
When I had somewhat related issue with slow update of metadata status, that command seemed to sometimes speed it up.

  • AFP Connection Status box shows each time I launch Photoshop

I am on a 2-computer network and whether I am off the network or on, each time I launch PhotoshopCS the AFP Connection Status box pops up with the message: Looking up "[name's] computer" (the other computer on the network). Why is this appearing and how do I get rid of it? It's the only application this happens in. I'm on a PowerBook G4; the other computer is a G5 tower. Both run OSX 10.4.xx. (When this happens I press Cancel in the dialog box and Photoshop continues to launch.)

BDAqua, Thanks for trying to help; you're the only person who responded. I have read the two threads you sent, but I'm not seeing the similarities between these issues and mine. I don't think I changed a user short name; I went to the Users folder as suggested in one of the posts and there are three users: me, the other person who's computer I connect to sometimes, and a shared folder. The other thread looks like it has to do with someone who's ON a network and can't see the other computers. That's not my problem.
Any other suggestions? It only happens when I launch Photoshop, and naturally I have saved something from the other computer to mine in that program, but in lots of others too.

  • Strange Metadata status ?

Immediately after importing a folder, some Jpeg photos had a 'up to date' metadata status, and others 'has been changed'; same with NEF photos. No processing was done on these photos with LR or other software.
so I don't understand how this status is defined ?
    Thanks for your help.

I think it is a bug related to the way Lr handles metadata.

  • Metadata not writing to file, metadata status "..."

Until recently, I am sure that saving metadata to file worked fine.  Now, when I do it for a selection, it appears to write (with disk activity and dialogue of files being updated), but then afterwards I still have <mixed> status on the set.  Some within are updated, others show status <...>.
Catalogue says there is no corruption - so what's going on?  How do I fix it?  And should I worry about teh state of my images?
    Thanks for any help

Now see that when I save for some that show "Changed", it writes, then returns to
say either "..." or back to "Changed".  It seem to think that the catalogue has some changes each time.

  • Metadata status not updated although saved

I recently installed LR 3.5 on a new computer with Windows 7.  All my 25000 + files are present and linked to LR - I have "automatically write changes into XMP" checked in catalogue settings.  However if I make any changes to a file in the develop module, the metadata panel says that metadata is "inchanged" and the little exclamation mark appears on the preview in the filmstrip and that is even if a do a ctrl S and the activity viewer quickly says it is saving the metadata.  However, the changes appear to be permanent as the history remains up to date even after I close and reopen LR.  I have not yet tried to import any images since getting the new computer as I want to make sure everything is working as it should be!!  What have I done wrong?

Never assume the metadata is saved when checking in lightroom(by just reopening LR). The metadata is stored in the database and therefore would give you a false positive. You have two choices, use another app that will read the metadata directly from the xmp file like adobe bridge, or reload the metadata from that file into lightroom (Metadata>Read Metadata from files). Please note that doing the latter will destroy any changes you have made to that image in lightroom if the save did not work, for what ever reason.
If you are autosaving or ctrl-s saving the metadata and it is not taking, one of the things to look at is the files permissions, they may be set to not over write unless you are another person, another app, another computer, etc.
Right click on the folder in explorer and make sure you have full access for the image folder and also check the lightroom apps folder and verify it has full access as well. Generally the latter with minimum permission will stop LR from using the open and save dialog boxes making it look like the app had frozen.

  • How to remove "restore old status box"

Whenever I open Firefox I get a box below the Google entry bar that asks "Restore old status" or words to that effect. There is no way to tell the box (icon) to go away, I don't want to restore a previous string/status. If I leave the box alone I can continue without problems, but I don't want the box there. I was able to get rid of the box by right clicking on it and left clicking "stop", but that doesn't seem to work anymore. I find this extremely annoying.

Firefox 4 and later versions use a new build-in home page named <b>about:home</b> with a Google search bar on it.<br />
That about:home page only shows some snippets and has a button to restore the previous session if applicable.
If you want a home page without the Restore Previous Session then set another page as the home page like www.google.com or www.google.com/firefox used in Firefox 3 versions.

  • Metadata Display box is empty (PP 4.0.1)

I don't know if anyone else is seeing this issue. In Premiere Pro CS4, the Metadata Display dialog is empty, except for a search box (magnifying glass). This dialog box can be found in the context menu of the Project and Metadata panels. It is used to select which metadata fields you want visible.
Both panels are populated with information. If I try typing a search (like "usage" to get video and/or audio usage info), it closes. As a result, I cannot change the metadata display fields.
This feature definitely worked when I first installed Premiere. I suspect it broke after installing the 4.0.1 patch.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a custom built Intel Core Duo E6300/ASUS P5B motherboard, with an EVGA GeForce 8800GT video card (180.48 drivers). Premiere is installed on my Windows drive, and my project and footage are on an external SATA drive. Other CS4 applications installed are Flash and Soundbooth. I also have the CS3 Master Suite previously installed.
I'm editing 24p standard definition DV (from a Panasonic DVX100C).
    Thanks.

I was playing with it, checking it for you on a project with one MXF HVX-200 clip and it just crashed. Haven't ever tried to change my meta data before, no need, unlike you the HVX writes it for me.
Can't help ya man. Might be a coincidence or might be real problem.

  • Turn off metadata display box when mousing over photos?

When mousing over photos in the viewer or browser, a box pops up next to the cursor showing metadata. I find this very distracting and annoying when editing a photo or confirming faces. In Aperture 2, you could turn it off under preferences, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to turn it off in Aperture 3 (metadata has a separate tab rather than controlling the viewing of metadata under preferences in A2). Hitting the letters Y and U work in the viewer and browser, respectively, but only for one photo - doesn't stop it for good. I've tried messing around with all the other metadata view settings. Any ideas?

Hitting the letter T toggles the display, you can adjust this setting with Command -J.

  • When I try to install "Addblock Plus", a pop-up box displays "Add-on downloading", and "unknown time remaining - 0 bytes (0 bytes / sec)". My local area connection status box shows that it is connected but that nothing is being received.

I am using Firefos 9.0.1 under Windows XP. I use Avast anti-virus. My Add-ons bar is empty. I have not initiated the installation of any plug-ins. Downloads keeps no record of my attempts.

Thank you for your interest mha007. This is an update on my evenings activities so far.
I have done that trouble shooting with results, as follows:
    Started in safe mode
In Tools/Options/Advanced/General, I unchecked "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    Clicked on Tools/Add-ons
    "Get add-ons" displayed "Loading" indefinitely
All 5 Extensions are dis-abled: it suggested that I remove "Microsoft.net framework assistant 1.2.1" & "Test pilot 1.2".
On "Microsoft.net framework assistant 1.2.1" I Clicked "Remove". It remained but with version 0.0.0.
On "Test pilot 1.2" I clicked "Remove". It disappeared.
The single Appearance "Default 9.0.1" is disabled
None of the 16 plug-ins are disabled.
I clicked on Add-ons and "Get add-ons" displayed "Loading"
Several minutes later I found that, "Add-ons" had loaded.
I clicked on "Most popular" and then on "Add to Firefox " within "Adblock plus"
    A pop-up box displayed "Add-on downloading", and "unknown time remaining - 0 bytes (0 bytes / sec)".
Within a minute, a Firefox "Alert" pop-up window opened with the message: "An error occurred during a connection to www.mozilla.org:443 / The OCSP server experienced an internal error. / (Error code: sec_error_ocsp_server_error)"
I bookmarked the "Most popular add-ons page"
I closed Firefox and opened it again - not in safe mode.
Clicked on Tools/Add-ons. "Get add-ons" displayed "Loading".
In Extensions, on "Microsoft.net framework assistant 1.2.1" I Clicked Disable", and Restart Firefox
I clicked on Tools/Add-ons. "Get add-ons" displayed "Loading". Message displayed "Connected to services.add-ons.mozilla.org. Waited.
10 minutes later I opened a new tab and clicked on the "Most popular add-ons page" bookmark. Message displayed "Connected to add-ons.mozilla.org". Waited.
15 minutes later, neither of the tabs had responded. I re-started firefox in safe mode
I clicked on Tools/Add-ons. "Get add-ons" displayed "Loading". Message displayed "Connected to static-ssl-cdn.addons.mozill.net"
Using the new tab from above which was not active on restart, I clicked on the "Most popular add-ons page" bookmark.
The bookmarked page opened. I clicked on "Add to Firefox " within "Adblock plus"
Again, a pop-up box displayed "Add-on downloading", and "unknown time remaining - 0 bytes (0 bytes / sec)". (No Alert this time).
I don't know what to read into all of this. Any advice on what the next best thing to do would be appreciated.

  • Metadata Status and Greyscale Images

I have a number of 16 bit DNG grayscale images in my collection. In spite of the fact that I update the metadata files, after a short time, the metadata returns to indicating metadata has been changed and the update arrow appears in the Grid even though the file has not been modified. This seems to be isolated to grayscale images.
    Any solution available?

    Brent,
I have had this problem with more than just greyscale images.  The real difficulty is being able to find them since there is no way to filter for those images which have an update arrow on the grid (i.e., needing metadata updated).
If you can isolate them, I have had great success in updating the DNG Preview, which also updates the metadata.  This is not selective so only update those that have the icon.  Sometimes I have to do them one at a time but it usually gets rid of the icon.
As a side note, if you have "Automatically write to XMP" turned on, the mysterious icons that won't disappear with the Ctrl-S or by left-clicking the icon also have a memory leak which can freeze LR if you are in a session long enough to use up the available memory.
Give the Update DNG Preview a try on one and see what happens.
