Metro setup for small children's computer

I'm trying to set up the Metro UI for a small children's computer a a local public library.  Each game has it's own icon and ideally, the children could run the game, close the game and the computer would return to the Metro UI for a consistent, locked
down, experience.  The kiosk kit would be great, but there are 10-12 games and more to come.
Currently, the desktop sometimes opens when the game closes.  How do I start to lock this down?  Do I need to look at vitalization?

Hi,
Apologize for the late reply.
Do you mean to personalize the PC to open games and when close make it back to the start screen, and prevent to go back to the desktop?
Please take a look at the Taskbar and navigation Properties,
under the Navigation tab, the Start Screen part, make sure we have thestatus of When I sign in or close all APPs on a screen, go to desktop instead of start
is UNCHECKED.

  • DHCP vs manual setup for small business peer to peer - which is better?

We have perhaps 10 Macs, a few printers and an imagesetter networked peer to peer, currently using DHCP. Whenever power goes off (once a week sometimes) all of our aliases we use to connect to one another become useless as the router assigns new IP addresses. Would manual address assigning be better, and if so, what's involved? I'm amazed i can't find others in this situation. Thanks.

I have no trouble connecting to an AEBS that is set to hand out DHCP addies by setting a Mac or two or three to "DHCP with Manual Address"... as long as I don't choose an already handed out addy, so with 10 Computers on my AEBS, with addies of 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.11, I simply choose 10.0.1.20.
I could go through each computer and Manually set it's IP to the one it got from the AEBS, then reset the AEBS, and everything would be as before, but the IPs would just never change.

Log in to your account, and move all your files to your home folder. No other users should be able to access them there and they won't show up with a Spotlight search.
Make sure your kids' account(s) do not have admin privileges.

  • Design Suggestion for a new setup for a small office

    Hi Guys,
We have a client requirement to setup a small business office to connect to its Head Quaters.
Attached here with the sample High level design.
My Question here is the above mentioned load balancer can used for this setup or not??? It can be connected to once again a router???
Internet / Broadband BW would be 15 or 25 Mbps.

  • Best setup for a small iMac network with NAS?

    Hello all,
Any recommendations on how to setup a small network with 3 machines and mutiple users?
We run a design studio and currently have 3 x 27" iMacs with a couple of laptops that come and go, that all connect to a Synology DS213 NAS drive. (All the iMacs are connected to the NAS via ethernet through a gigabit switch, so we have a reliable connection)
All 3 machines have just had their HD's replaced (all backup up to the NAS) and are currently blank canvases - so I'm keen to get a decent network system up and running that works well in conjunction with the NAS drive. They're all running 10.6.8, but I'm happy to put them on Mountain Lion and install OSX server. It seems most feedback isn't great, but I'm interested to hear any ideas,
    Thanks in advance..

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • How to setup a small office network

    Hello,
I am looking to setup a small office network comprising 6 G4 macs (existing computers) that have been upgraded to the newest OS version. What is the best way to go about networking these computers together in terms of being able to share files, internet connection, access to peripherals and also implementing a firewall.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

1, Get a cable internet ISP account; depending on your service you should be able to secure a 5Mbps down and 2Mbps up on the cable e.g. Cox or Comcast.
    2. Get a good router. The mass market Linksys and Netgear routers aren't very good in terms of reliability. I use a ZyXEL P-330W router is the best I've ever seen. Its reliable and very efficient in terms of throughout. The Apple Airport Extreme is good.
    3. Set up the router to support UPnP. This way all computers will be able to share iChatAV video conferencing. If you enabled "port forwarding" only one Mac would be able to use iChatAV video conferencing.
    4. Set up your router for DHCP to dynamically issue Internet address to all your computers.
    5. Setup the wireless router for encryption such as WPA. This will encrypt wireless communication.
    6. Setup the wireless router for only your computers. You'll have to get the MAC/AirPort ID network addresses as expressed in terms of an xx:xx:xx:xx address. You can get this thru your Systems Preferences -> Network window -> AirPort (in the sidebar) -> Advanced button.
    7. If you have Ethernet in your office then skip steps 5 and 6 above.
    8. On each computer open up the System Preferences -> Sharing and check-off the File Sharing. Set your user access preferences appropriately.
9. Get a Network enabled All-in-one printer and setup Printer Sharing options. Hook-it up to your network and add your printer by clicking on the "+" sign in your "Print and Fax" Preferences.
    10. Don't enable Apple Firewall on each Mac. The router will be the Firewall.
Ok. That's the short-hand.. plug it all in and go!

  • How do I save my setup for Photoshop Elements 11 that I created for category - sub-category - Keyword Tags

how do I save my setup for Photoshop Elements 11 that I created for category - sub-category - Keyword Tags  I would like to use the setup for other Photoshop Elements

First are you going to use the same keyword/categories hierarchy in the same Elements version (or newer)? If so, using the backup/restore process will also restore your hierarchy.
If you want to create the same hierarchy in an older Elements version, it's possible to save that hierarchy in a special text file and to restore it in the new catalog in the destination computer. It's also possible to restore it in another catalog in the same computer.
Look at the title bar of the keywords panel. Next to the '+' sign on the right, you see a small icon which opens a menu offering the option to save or to restore the text file.

  • Ideal hardware setup for Aperture

Is there an ideal hardware setup for working with 18megapixel raw files in aperture? Of the three...graphics card, cpu and ram...which are the most important to processing the raw image.
I am running 10.6.3 on a macbookpro 2.2GHz core 2 duo, 4G ram and an Nvidia card with 128Mb of vram.
Overall it feels somewhat slow, about 10 seconds to load the full raw image on screen. Is that just to be expected? Any form of image adjustment usually switches to low res while adjustment is being made.
    Thanks in advance.

A fast hard drive seems to be the most important thing now. The more I use Aperture, the more I appreciate the need for fast, fast hard drives! Open the activity monitor and monitor your disk activity. Monitor the IO - if you are constantly in the hundreds for the disk IO counters, you are IO bound (and more than likely it's your library database and preview thumbnails database).
For a laptop, the Seagate 500GB with the 4 GB of flash built in that it manages might be a good way to go. I just got one and haven't had a time to put it in my Mac Book Pro for testing. If it manages to put most of your library database in the 4 GB flash cache, you won't see near the performance issues as with a regular hard drive.
You could get a smaller SSD for your primary drive and to put the library on, then get one of the kits to remove the optical drive and put the hard drive in that bay. Reference your masters on the hard drive and that way you won't go broke buying a huge SSD. Gasp! I know, me recommending referenced files - I'm grudgingly coming around. Well, that and Aperture 3 has some pretty nice features for referenced files that are making me more willing to consider that kind of a setup, esp. when I look at the disk activity and constant fragmentation of the library and thumbnail database files. I'm seriously considering getting an SSD just for my library database and thumbnail databases and referencing the masters on my internal RAID.
Also others have recommended iDefrag and I can heartily recommend it as well if you stick with traditional hard drives. If nothing else, download the free version and run it - I'll bet that the two aperture databases for your library will easily be the most fragmented files on your hard drive, followed by the thumbnails themselves. SSD obviously doesn't have the latency issues of rotating disk so defrag isn't needed - indeed it would just shorten the life of your SSD with a bunch of unnecessary writes. If you do consider SSD, the only one I can recommend for the Mac is from Other World Computing/MacSales as it does internal garbage collection. Until Mac OS X supports TRIM, normal SSDs that don't do internal garbage collection will run fine for a while, then hit a performance wall that will make you want to go back to your hard drive
Anyway don't feel bad - until I started tweaking my hard drive setup, there wasn't a real speed difference between my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro - want to talk about a real downer!

  • Router setup for a server not working

    Hi!
I own a model BEFW11S4 router, and in the past I had setup a small website hosted on my own computer. I used the port forwarding option to open a port so that I could access my site via my IP address. Now, trying to do this again, ( I just did a firmware upgrade incase this matters) I opened the port the same way, but when I type in my isp ip address, it opens the router's admin login dialog box instead of my server. I only get my server when I go to 127.0.0.1 or my network ip (192.168.1.100). Can anybody tell me why my router is doing this?
thanks in advance for any help.

can u verify that you have forwarded the port for the IP of the PC which is hosting the web server ? also verify that you have not enabled remote management.
would suggest that you assign a static IP to your web server and forward port 80 for that same IP address.
let me know if you need more details.

  • VPN Client and Setup for RV042

Is there a definitive setup for a small VPN using the RV042?
Situation is 2 remote users wish to get access to a non server (W7P) pc to access files.
The end point doesn't have a static IP but I've put in a DYNDNS.org so it reports back the IP and I can access the router at least from outside.
I can setup VPN users but is there more to do?
Wish to use QVPN client or advise alternative.
    Appreciate all input.
    Thanks
    Bruce

    Bruce,
QuickVPN normally works well for what you wish to do. Make sure that the Windows Firewall is ON in Windows 7 and Windows Vista clients. Turn off all antivirus and third party firewall software as well at least until you have verified that you have a successful connection. It is very easy to set up, just create a username and password in the router. If you run into trouble, post here or call your local Small Business Support Center:

  • Office 2013 RMS Client Configuration - Your Machine is not setup for IRM

    Hi All,
I have successfully setup a test AD RMS farm but stuck at trying to configure Office 2013 to work with this. The farm configuration is as below
    DC: Windows 2003
AD RMS Server: Windows 2008/ SQL Server 2008 R2
Client: Windows 7 64 bit with Office 2013 32 bit, Domain Joined
Client is domain joined and SCP has been successfully registered ( I can see the SCP in AD RMS properties).
When I open word and select Protect Document -> Restrict Access, the only option is to Connect to RMS Server and get template, which eventually gives an error
Your Machine isn't setup for Information Rights Management (IRM). To set up IRM, sign in to office, open an existing IRM protected message or document, or contact your help desk.
Surprisingly, when I open a document protected by IRM (from a different machine), IRM is automatically configured for the user and starts working from that point. However any new domain user login into this client faces the same issue.
Can anyone help identify the required registry keys that need to be present for getting this working on the client.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi  Manoj,
To install Microsoft Deployment Agent, you must be a member of the Windows
Administrators security group on the computer where you will install it. You must also be a member of the
Release Manager role in Release Management.
From the log, the user you‘re using seems not in the local administrator group. Please make sure the corresponding users has the needed permissions to install the deployment agent. Please check this
page for more information about installation of deployment agent. If you have any other issues, please elaborate more details about your scenario.

  • Need advice for starting a Managed Cloud Service for Small Businesses

I hope this is in the right forum.  I have done a lot of research and searching but havent found anything that specifically answers, in total, what I am wanting to accomplish.  I live in a small town and want to start a Managed Cloud Services for
small to small-medium business in my area (2-30 users for each business).  I want to market this to have businesses replace their in-house server(s) to virtual ones I would host in a local Data Center with my own equipment that I would maintain.  I
am just starting off so I don't have any clients I do this for currently, but I get asked about this frequently.  I want to run a 2012 R2 Domain Controller and a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server.  The virtual servers I will host are going to be for AD, RDS,
FTP, and files.  Software examples that people are going to be using these virtual servers for are Quickbooks, Sage Accounting, Remote Desktop or RemoteApp, custom CRM or small database software, Office 2013, etc.  No Exchange currently but will
probably configure something for that in the future (maybe run 1-3 virtually for now if someone asks, but will only do it if the user base is fairly small ~under 10 users).  I only have 1 static IP to work with over a 100Mbps connection up and down.
For hardware, I am figuring something along the lines of this:
    (1) 1U, single CPU w/2-4 cores, 8GB, 2x73GB SAS 10k RAID 1, Dual PSU, running Windows Server 2012 R2
    Domain Controller
    (1) 2U, 2x 8-core Xeon ~2.6Ghz, 80GB RAM, 8x600GB SAS 15k in Raid 10 for Storage (VHDX files, etc), RAID 1 small Basic drives (or USB stick) for OS, Dual PSU, Quad GB Nic which I can use for load balancing/teaming, Hyper-V
    2012 R2
    Hyper-V Virtual Server
    (1) GB Unmanaged Network Switch & (1) Cisco 5510 Firewall
Most of my questions are about the best way to configure this.  I am planning on managing my Hyper-V from the physical Domain Controller server.  Each virtual server will have RDS & (possibly) AD services on a single server.
    1) I want to replicate the physical Domain Controller.  Should I get another server or just virtualize the replica in Hyper-V?  I understand that if the Hyper-V goes down, so does my DC replica.
    2) Should I use my Domain Controller to manage ALL users on each virtual Server, by creating separate Organizational Units for each business?
    3) Should I setup my domain controller with Hyper-V management and then each Virtual Server I setup be a separate domain (Ex. mydomain.local, business1.local, business2.local, etc)?  Each one has no connection to any
other, completely seperate.  Or should I do subdomains (business1.mydomain.local).
    4) What I have read is that Subdomains are a pain to manage with user rights, etc.  I want to keep each server complete separated from one another over a network connection, I suppose the VLan through Hyper-V options
do this?  I dont want wondering users to stumble upon another businesses files (I know they would probably be prompted with a login for that business/domain).
    5) For each virtual server, I want to create and have an HTTP subdomain point to that server from my domain name. (Ex: business1.mydomain.com, business2.mydomain.com, etc.)  I want them to be able to have access to
only their RemoteApps or be able to type that address in their Remote Desktop program as the host name.  This would be for viewing the RemoteApp login page and RemoteApps for that business over HTTP/S through a browser.
    6) If I do not have separate DC's in each virtual and my main DC manages each one, is their a way to connect up each companies RemoteApps using a single site that only shows what they are assigned to based upon their login?
(Ex. http://login.mydomain.com which then shows that user what they are assigned on their own virtual server)
    7) Since each business will use the same ports for RemoteApp (443) & RDC (3389 unless I change it), how would I setup the subdomains to point to their correct server and not overlap for mess with any of the other servers
since its all over 1 static WAN IP for all servers.  Thats why I figured setting up IIS subdomains would solve this.
    8) For backups or Hyper-V replication, is it better to have software that backs up the ENTIRE Hyper-V server (Acronis Advanced Backup for Hyper-V) as well as replication or just backups?  Or should I do separate file
backup on each virtual with a replica?  Can a replica be a slower server since its just a backup? (Ex. 1x 8 core, 80GB, 8x600GB 10k SAS)
    9) For the servers that will be using FTP, can I again rely on the subdomains to determine which server to connect to on port 21 without changing each FTP servers ports?  I just want each business/person to type in
the subdomain for their business and it connect up to their assigned FTP directory over port 21.
    10) If the physical DC manages DNS for all Virtual servers, can I forward sub domain requests to the proper virtual server so they connect to the correct RemoteApp screen etc.  Again all I have is 1 IP.
I hope all of these questions make sense.  I just want every business to be independent of each other on the Hyper-V, each on their own virtual server, all without changing default ports on each server, each server running RDS, (possibly) AD, (a few) FTP,
and all over a common single WAN IP.  Hoping subdomains (possibly managed through IIS on the physical DC) will redirect users to their appropriate virtual server.

If you really want to run your own multi-tenant service provider cloud, Microsoft has defined the whole setup needed.
They call it Infrastructure as a Service Product Line Architecture.  You can find the full documentation here -
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/yuridiogenes/archive/2014/04/17/infrastructure-as-a-service-product-line-architecture.aspx
There are several different ways of configuring and installing it.  Here is a document I authored that provides step-by-step instructions for deploying into a Cisco UCS and EMC VSPEX environment -
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/UCS_CVDs/ucs_mspc_fasttrack40_phase1.pdf
This document contains the basic infrastructure required to manage a private cloud.  I will soon be publishing a document to add the Windows Azure Pack components onto the above configuration.  That is what would more easily provide a multi-tenant
experience with a Azure look and feel.  It is not Azure, but the Azure pack is a series of applications, some of which came from Azure, the provides Azure-like capabilities only in a service provider type of environment.
Whether you use my document or not (which has actually corrected errors found in the Microsoft documentation), you should take a look at it to see what it takes to put something like this up, if you are really serious about it.  It is not a small undertaking.
It requires a lot of moving pieces to be coordinated.  Yes, my document is designed to scale to a large environment, but you need the components that are there.  No need re-inventing the wheel.  Microsoft's documentation is based on a lot of
real hands on experience of their consulting organization that has been doing this for customers for years.  This one is also know as Fast Track 4.  I've done 2 (2008 R2) and 3 (2012), also and it just keeps getting more complicated based on customer
    demands and expectations.
    Good luck!

  • Adding a domain user to the admin role within the local user management breaks all metro apps for all users!!

    Hi,
I have posted this in another large thread under the "Windows 8 General" group but have not had any appropriate feedback from MS.
After hours of testing and working with other users I have managed to isolate a simple situation that breaks all metro ui applications within Windows 8 for all users on the machine. Here are my exact steps and notes.
Before continuing if you are running Avast then your solution may be to turn of the behaviour shield functionality as this also breaks metro apps. This is NOT the problem we are having!
I have performed 3 cleans installs after isolating the problem and am able to reproduce the issue every time using the same steps on two different machines.
First thing to say is that for us it has nothing to do with simply joining the domain, domain/group policies nor does it appear to have anything to do with the software we installed, the problem here is much more simple but the result is pretty terrible.
Here are my exact steps of what I did to reproduce our problem:
Complete format of HDD in preperation for a clean install
    Clean install performed
Set up the machine initially with a local account
Test metro apps - all working fine
Open control panel from the desktop, click on System, change the system to join the domain, click reboot
Log into the system using my domain account
Test metro apps - all working fine
Here's were the problem starts. I need my domain account to have admin rights on the local machine so I can install programs without the IT men having to come over and enter their password every 5 mins.
I go to control panel via the desktop and click on User Accounts. From with here I then click on "Manage User Accounts". This requires the IT guys to enter their details to give me access to such functionality. This is fine
In the dialog box that opens I can only see the local user that was initially created during setup. The "Group" for this local account shows as "Administrators" - Image included below (important to note that metro apps are working at this point)
I click add and then add my domain account - also giving it administrator access
Sign off or reboot to ensure the new security is applied
Sign back in to the domain account
    Test metro - ALL BROKEN
    Sign out
    Sign in as local account
Test Metro - NOW ALL BROKEN FOR THIS USER ALSO
So as soon as I add my domain account to the local user accounts and set it as admin it breaks all metro apps for all users. This is on a totally clean install with nothing at all installed other than the OS.
Annoyingly if I go back and change the domain account to a standard user or if I totally remove the domain account from the local account management system the problem does not go away for either user. basically it is now permanently broken. The only fix I
could fathom was a full re install and not giving the domain user admin access to the local  machine.
Screen one - this is the local user accounts window AFTER joining the domain and logging in with my domain account (All metro apps working at this point)
Screen 2: User accounts AFTER joining the domain and AFTER adding domain account to local user management (METRO BROKEN)
I have isolated my machine from all group policies so nothing like that is affecting me. Users I have spoken to in different companies have policies that automatically add users to the local user management. This means that metro apps break as
soon as they join the domain which leads them to wrongly think it is group policies causing the error. Once they isolate themselves from this they can reproduce following my steps.
    Thanks

    Hi Juke,
Thank you for the response and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. My machine was running a long task so I couldn't try your suggested solution.
I had already tried running the registry merge suggested at the top of the thread to no avail. I had not tried deleting the OLE key totally so I did that and the problem still exists. I will post all the errors I see in event viewer below. For
your info, since posting my initial comment I have sent out my steps to 7 different people and we can all reproduce the problem. This comes to 10 different machines (3 of them mine then the other guys) in 3 different businesses / domains. We see the same errors
    in event viewer.
Under "Windows Logs" --> "Application" : I get two separate error events the first reads "Activation of app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: The app didn't start. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional
information." The second arrives in the log about 15 seconds after the first and reads "App winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store did not launch within its allotted time."
Under "Windows Logs" --> "System" : I get one error that reads "The server Windows.Store did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."
Under "Applications And Services Logs" --> "Microsoft" -->  "Windows" --> "Apps" --> "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" : I get one error that reads "Activation of the app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store for the
Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The app didn't start."
If you require any further information just let me know and I will provide as much as I can.
    Thanks
