Microsoft office 2011 for mac - which edition?

I have to invest in the new 2011 edition as my current edition is only 2004 and doesn't work with Lion
However I don't get the two versions on offer - Home & Student vs Home & Business and so do not know which is best...
As far as I can see the only difference is that with Home & Business you get Outlook and since I use Mail I am not bothered about not having it.
However, I am both a home and small business user so don't understand what 'Not for commercial use' actually means on the description of the Home and Student edition... are there miscrosoft office 'virtual' police that check how you use it?

I bought Office 2011 (Home and Student single user edition) - which as you say, doesn't include Outlook.
Also: in Word 2011 the find/replace "in all open documents" has gone. I really need that function. There are a few other things in Office 2011 that I dislike, for instance the fact that it takes a looooong time to start up and shut down.
So I use Office 2008. It works fine in Lion.

Easiest way with Acrobat pro, is save the Word document, then convert the document to PDF with Acrobat, rather than doing a "save as" in Word itself to PDF.
Do you have Acrobat full version or Pro?

  • I am using Microsoft office 2011 for mac, publisher is not included, meanwhile I have publisher files saved from windows, is there any recommended software I can install on the mac so that I can open the files?

How can I be able to use my Windows publisher files on my Mac computer, since Microsoft office 2011 for Mac doesn't have Publisher? What's most recommended software to use for this purpose?

Just an FYI here Allan, and clinton.
Version 4.0 or newer of Libre Office can open and edit Publisher files, this is fairly new, you may not have noticed it yet,
I tested it last week for another OP, it works very well, so finally there is a Mac application that can replace Publisher.
Here's a link to the post.
VikingOSX deserves the credit for finding it.

  • So when I installed the most recent updates for microsoft office 2011 for mac, my ical info disappeared.  Still have the info on my Office calendar but it's no longer on ical.  It's also been removed from my phone.  How can I get outlook to sync with ical

When I installed the recent updates for Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, my iCal calendar was wiped out, as was the calendar on my iPhone.  I'd rather use iCal than Office and was attempting to phase Office out altogether.  Now, all of my information is on the Office calendar but not iCal.  The iCloud version of my iCal calendar is not up to date.  In any event, I couldn't figure out how to send that info to the iCal on my mac or my phone.  How can I sync my Office calendar info to iCal?  If that's not possible, how can I get my Office calendar to sync with my iPhone?  All of my sync services are set up in iTunes and on my phone.  This happened to me once before and I spent hours on the phone with Apple and on the web trying to work it out.  I NEED MY CALENDAR!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

As that's not an Apple product, you may get more help by using Microsoft's Office for Mac forums:
    Office for Mac forums
The other concern I have is that Office 2011 requires an Intel-based Mac and you posted in the older iMac (pre-Intel or "PPC") forums. If you have an Intel-based iMac (Apple menu > About this Mac..." will say "Intel" if you do) then I think you'll get faster and more accurate ansers to other questiosn in the Apple forums for newer iMacs here:

As Office is not an Apple product, I strongly recommend asking in the Microsoft Office:Mac forums here:

  • ICloud mail with Microsoft Office 2011 for mac

I have a problem with iCloud e-mail account in MS Office iCloud 2011 for Mac. I tried using imap-server: imap.mail.me.com, but when I try to login with my username: [email protected] and iCloud password - I am constantly given information about the error - Authentification Failed.
    How to solve this problem?

Outlook on Mac is absolutely not supported. If you go furhter with your experiments you will have contacts deleted and calendars mixed up.
Stick to what Apple says : Lion 10.7.2 ONLY. This "only" means : Apple Mail, iCal and Adressbook of OS X.
zero 3rd party software is supported for iCloud. ZERO.
Outlook on Windows is a completely different Software, do not automatically assume it would do on a Mac what it can on Windows.

  • My microsoft office 2011 for mac has stopped working on my macbook pro retina please help!!!

I have 10.8.2 running on my macbook pro retina 15' and suddenly microsoft office wont work on it and i have no clue as to what it is. can someone pleaseshed some light onto what the issue could be?

I have the exact same problem.  I started having the problem with MS Office 2008 after I installed a new harddrive in my imac (24-inch, Early 2009), OS X 10.8.4.  Everything was working fine and then when I try to open any Office app, the icon bounces in the dock, and nothing happens.
I as searched for solutions, the obvious fix was to uninstall office (even all of the excess system files it leaves even after an uninstall).  When I a re-install Office 2008, it works for about 1 week and then it stops working again.
Next I thought to try the new version of Office (Office 2011), so I did the trial download, and sure enough got the same problem.  After about 2 weeks, it stopped responding.  I have talked to MS support about this problem, and their suggestion was to uninstall and then reinstall, which I am becoming an expert at.
I am also having an issue with Apple Mail and contacts becoming disconnected.  When created a new mail, typing in the receiptant does not pull up their email address even though it is in my address book.  The fix for this, which I do even other day is to delete a system folder in Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  I do that, and it works for a few days.
    Any suggestions would be great.

  • Can't activate Office 2011 for mac (downloaded from office 365 portal)

    Hello All,
I've installed Office 2011 for mac which was downloaded from office 365 Portal. However, during installation process there was not a windows for activation (key or sign in method).
Is there a way to force activation on Office 2011 for mac?
    Note: I've deleted office 365 com.microsoft.office.plist but i didn't get a windows for activation.
    MacbookPro Version 10.10.2
    Regards
    JO

    Hi,
If you downloaded Office 2011 for Mac, you may not need a product key to activate it. Office 365 uses a new mechanism that the activation is based on your Office 365 Account instead of a product key.
Anyway, in this forum we mainly discuss questions and feedbacks about Office for Windows, as your question is about Office for Mac, I suggest you post the question in Office for Mac forum:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac
I've also noticed this question is actually more related to the activation, you may need to contact the local customer service to get more dedicated assistance:

  • Trying to install MS Office 2011 for Mac SP 2 on my Macbook Air (Lion 10.7.3). I have to close Microsoft Database Daemon and SyncServicesAgent but can not see how to do so.  I have closed all applications.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Trying to install MS Office 2011 for Mac SP 2 (14.2.0) on my Macbook Air (Lion 10.7.3). I have to close Microsoft Database Daemon and SyncServicesAgent but can not see how to do so.  I have closed all applications.  Can anyone help? Many thanks

Thanks Kurt!  I had tried all that and had tried closing both programmes from the application monitor, but SyncServices Agent refused to close.  I tried closing Launchd which is their mother application, but that just caused the screen go go blank.  In the end the two programmes let themselves be closed next time I tried the installation process so all was well.  Thanks for your help!

  • Problems with Office 2011 for mac after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Office 2011 for mac worked fine with Lion on my MacBook Air.  I had been having some problems with my computer freezing and crashing, so the folks at the Genius Bar wiped my computer clean and installed Mountain Lion for me.
I have full backups (Time Machine) from before the wipe on my external hard drive, but I was told not to restore from the backup, that I should drag and drop files instead.  I was also told to re-install any program for which I had the disk.  I reinstalled Office 2011 via the disk.
    Two major problems followed:
    1.     I lost all my old emails (I use Mail).  Even rebuilding the library or trying to restore them from Time Machine don't get them back.
    2.     Word and Excel don't seem to recognize me anymore.  I can pull up and modify an old document or workbook, but I cannot "save" my changes.  I have to hit "save as." That's a pain, but there's a worse problem.
I have no trouble saving these "save as" versions to my desktop or to my Documents file.  But I cannot save them anywhere else — even to the folder where I found the original document.  I get a message that I don't have the necessary permissions to access or modify the folders. I'm asked to authenticate, and I do, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
I tried Get Info on the workbooks and documents, and I'm clearly granted Read and Write permission.
I've done a permissions repair via Disk Utility.  There were some things to repair, but it didn't solve my problem.
I know I can move all documents to an external hard drive and then recreate all the folders, saving all the documents and workbooks "as" but it seems a huge amount of work.  Can anybody suggest an easier route or how to get my email history?

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  'resetpassword' (without the 's) and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac sync Contacts and Calendar issues

OK, so I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Mountian Lion. I have Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac installed. Asked @BlackberryHelp on Twitter how to sync my Blackberry Torch with Outlook as it seems to default to using the builtin Apple Contacts and Calendar instead of Outlook. So they sent me the link to KB19148: "How to synchronize organizer data in Microsoft Office for Mac between the BlackBerry smartphone and a Mac computer using BlackBerry Desktop Software". So I turned on the Sync Services in Outlook and it gave me the dialog box confirming that everything was synced. And it appeared to copy and sync whatever Contacts in the Apple Contacts and calendar entries in the Apple Calendar into Outlook and vice versa. Cool since that's what I wanted.
Then I tried using the Blackberry Desktop Manager to sync everything to my Blackberry Torch 9810. Everything looked like it synced until I opened my Blackberry and all my Contacts were gone. Same with my Calendar entries, except that the Calender entries were hit and miss to whatever copied over (some Calendar entries were missing and others were duplicates). Checked the Apple Contacts and all of them were gone. But when I opened Outlook, everything was there and all OK.
So am I missing something? Turning on Sync Services in Outlook should sync all my Contacts and Calendar with my Blackberry when I use Blackberry Desktop Manager, correct? So why is it still syncing with the Apple Contacts and Calendar (and why did it delete all my Apple Contacts and mess up my Apple Calendar)?
Good thing I backed everything up first so restored everything. But I have all my updated Contacts and Calendar in Outlook and I still need to sync all of that. I don't want to manually do it. So how do I fix this??

After a bit of googling I think you mean the notation "domain\username", i.e., a backslash separator but no leading backslash.
I am not familiar with that notation but apparently it is valid in some contexts.  I googled "os x "domain\username"" to confirm this notation.  Here's one of the hits that shows the notation:
OS X Lion: Guidelines for connecting to a DFS namespace via SMB
I think "DFS" is a distributed file system.  That's as much as I know about this.

  • How do I sync Office 2011 for Mac with Contacts under Mountain Lion?

How do I sync Office 2011 for Mac (Outlook) contacts with Contacts under Mountain Lion (or iOS6)?  Outlook doesn't seem to have moved on from iSync, and meddling seems to produce unpredictable results.

You can't. Microsoft have not added support for the industry standard sync protocols iCloud uses.

  • Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac - missing options

    Hello!
I've got some trouble with Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac:
I realized that there are some options missing in the menu bars, such as "Insert > Cross-reference", etc.
Today I reinstalled the whole thing including all updates (11.3.7). No success.
However I noticed that on my admin account the options are existent but still not on my "everyday account".
    Therefore my question:
How can I remove user specific preferences for Office? I guess this might solve my problem.
Thanks to anyone who has some hints for me!

Since Office is not an Apple product, you'll probably want to use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups> rather than an Apple forum that focuses on compatibility issues between Macs and Windows.
Be sure to search the forum first in case someone has already had a similar question answered

What is the easiest method to convert your Outlook Mail from MS Office 2011 for Mac, into Apple Mail?

As best I can see from googling it, there is NO easy direct way with Apple's builtin tools.  If you Google it you will find that many software companies are selling Apps specifically designed for this purpose.  Good luck.
