Microsoft service pack 3 compatable??
Are older versions of microsoft office compatable with Lion? I have service pack 3.
There is a Service Pack 1 for 2011 and a Service Pack 2 for 2008. Are you sure it is the OS X version and not the Windows version?

DeepakJust a suggestion, but I don't let windows AUTOMATICALLY install anything. That's a bad idea IMHO. For example, I'm in no rush to install IE7 given I use firefox most of the time.
You might want to switch things so that windows notifies you that there are updates available but then waits for you to review things and decide what you really want -- that is, do a custom install.
Of course I was stupid and immediately upgraded to itunes 7 -- an action that I will forever regret. Oy.

Microsoft Service Pack 2 - not all versions are equal; how to update to the latest one "safe
I posted this under another topic where it was relevant, but thought the instructions I got from Microsoft were useful (as was my experience in using them as I sent back a reply to them with the problems I encountered [none of which were particularly bad]):
One important point to note is that not all Windows XP SP2 upgrades are equal.
I had a different issue and spoke to Microsoft, who advised me to uninstall the version of SP2 I had and reinstall the newest version (the old version was about 70mb, the new one nearly 250mb).
Apparently the old SP2 had quite a few problems with it; I've found the new one to be "simply stress free" since installing...
The SP2 file name I installed (ie the newest at the time I did it) was "windowsxp-kb835935-sp2-enu".
Here's their instructions - I disagree with the way round that they suggested downloading the update (ie I would strongly advise downloading the update and having it sitting on your desktop before doing anything!!! - please see my feedback email to them that follows (you will note that I had problems connecting to the internet after uninstalling the earlier version; this, combined with the fact that I could barely read what was on the screen would have given me a major inconvenience had I not done this)!!! (and don't blame me if it goes horribly wrong - it's also worth double-checking that the version of SP2 the email links to is the most up to date. I've had a quick check myself, and it does indeed appear to still be the most up to date):
MICROSOFT'S EMAIL (make sure you also read my reply below):

MY REPLY:
HiI successfully carried out the installation on Saturday.A few minor problems ensued (the second one may have cause a novice user real problems! Certainly caused me some concern whilst working through it!). I had to reinstall ATI drivers from scratch (for Radeon 9800 Pro); this was however the only set of drivers that appeared to "detach" itself. The main problem here was that instead of using the usual standard VGA driver (which it does when I uninstall it once a month to install updated drivers), it used some other driver that made the screen very difficult to see (especially on blue backgrounds!). Running ATI's total uninstall program sorted this out however, and fortunately I had the last update package from ATI still on my system. After uninstalling and reinstalling there appeared to be no further video problems.2. After installing SP2 (and before installing above), whilst I was in the process of getting everything up and running (eg installing the security updates) the system randomly froze about 4 or 5 times; the only way to sort this out was to use the power button. I traced this problem to Windows changing my wireless networking settings so that it handled everything; I have a Netgear adaptor the software for which usually controls this (Netgear Smart Wizard). Basically the two were trying to do the same task and causing crashes; on switching Windows management off, things settled down (the Netgear driver did not need to be reinstalled).3. As a minor point, after the upgrade and installing all other updates, I noted that Microsoft Update was no longer running; I had to reinstall it from Windows Update and the messages I got whilst installing suggested that it was still partially installed but that there were problems with it. It now works.4. As a final minor point, I attach the Scan log from Registry Mechanic which I ran after everything was up and running; it fixed various problems within the registry. I note that the majority of errors are inconsequential, but note that a few do relate to the various Microsoft installs; maybe the installer program for SP2/ Media Player 0 need to sort these out in future releases? Don't think they're a real problem though! The instructions supplied worked fine; one thing I would suggest is that users are instructed to download the SP2 upgrade pack to their desktop prior to uninstalling the original SP2; I believe that my internet connection problems started after I had uninstalled the original SP2 which may have caused problems downloading the new SP2. It also ensures that the download is successful (eg if the site was down for maintenance); I was advised whilst uninstalling SP2 that about 20 programs/drivers would not work properly after the uninstall and so the immediate reinstall was vital! One thing that seemed to fix after reinstalling was a problem I was having installing Media Player 0; after installing it previously, every time I checked for updates on it the whole program would reinstall. Now however this has fixed. I will let you know if I encounter any further problems, but things all seem to be fine now, touch wood.....!
Hope this helps!Message Edited by gjc26 on 0-27-2006 02:50 AMOne small thing - I believe the reason why some of my drivers were messing up was because they were SP2 specific; the older drivers and the ones that were compatible with both SP and 2 were fine.
As soon as I did the reinstall, all of the drivers/programs that were not working, worked (aside from the ones that I mentioned in my attached email above).
So, if after uninstalling the old SP2 you are told that loads of drivers/programs will not work, fear not - most should fix themselves upon installing the new SP2.

Bootcamp and Windows XP Service Pack compatibility?
Hey everyone,
I'm having a problem installing Windows XP onto my brand-new Macbook. I've got a still-in-the-package Windows XP re-installation disc from my girlfriend's computer but on the disc it says "includes Service Pack 1a". It says that I need Windows Service Pack 2 or later here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/11889.html
Upon finding the place to download Service Pack 2 on the Microsoft site, it says that you shouldn't download Service Pack 2 if it's for just one computer, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245 -9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
I started to try to install the disc via Bootcamp but was reluctant to partition my hard drive since I'm not sure about the Service Pack's compatibility for my Macbook.
Do I need to get a new Windows XP installation disc (as in go and buy one) or should I try to download Service Pack 2 or later from somewhere? I'm afraid to try to install Windows XP if I don't have the right disc or Service Pack. Can anyone help me?
Thanks for reading!Hi and welcome to Discussions,
for Windows XP installation on a Mac using BootCamp the XP istall CD has to have at least SP2 incorporated.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1899
Using an older version usually doesn't work and creates some problems.
However you can make yourself a XP SP2 installation CD using your SP1a CD and these instructions http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxpsp2slipstream.asp
But you have to do this on a Windows PC.
And despite what Microsoft says on that "Network Installation Package" page I would always recommend using these stand-alone SP updater and not use Windows Update for such huge system updates.
Hope it helps

My Satellite A205-S5800 Is InCompatible With Microsoft Vista Service Packs
I don't know where Toshiba gets off saying they're compatible with the Vista Service Packs when they are most certainly NOT. I have had the SAME exact problem with SP1 & SP2. I bought this paperweight at Best Buy (NEVER shop there), with Vista Home Basic, and ran into problems one month later, when I tried upgrading to SP1 (via Windows Update). It rebooted, and then refused to load. I had to reinstall everything. Again and again this happened. I took it to Best Buy, and they told me it was a faulty hard drive. Replaced, the problems reoccurred again. So, Best Buy claimed it was the Motherboard. A fresh one installed, SP1 finally worked from stand alone download. For 9 months, no problem. Then I stupidly decided to update to SP2 (via Windows Update). The SAME exact problem. Files were corrupted. Restore points vanished. Always with reinstalling to original format. I get SP2 standalone to work, and then Microsoft Update tells me I need to update with something or other. Rebooting ONCE AGAIN prevents me from loading up anything. Bets Buy now claims it's a software issue.
So, 3 different problems caused the exact same problem. Always with Windows Update, and almost always with Service Packs. This is compatibility? Toshiba sold me a lemon, a giant paper weight. I cannot upgrade it to Service Packs, and who knows which update next will frell me over. Especially since Microsoft forces updates on us from time to time. I have every right to update this laptop to the latest Service pack or other such necessary update to keep my system secure. What happens when my vulnerable machine is hijacked and zombieifed by nogoodnicks, and the police come knocking at my door? After all is said and done, and they chastise me about not updating my system, do I tell them, "No, it's OK. Toshiba says it's totally cool not to. They think Microsoft Service packs are evil"? Believe me, this situation can and has happened before. Machines can be compromised, and police will think it's you first.
Now, who at Toshiba do I speak to about a refund/replacement? I Lemon Law (via California) you, Toshiba. You sold me a worthless hunk of junk, and that is unacceptable. I will not use a system that can't be updated because you don't like Service Packs and Windows Update. and money was not spent to not use a laptop.I think your tinfoil hat is on too tight. If it was a problem with that model, then nobldy would be able to update Windows, and there would be thousands of posts all over the Internet.
Problems are usually caused by software, sometimes installed by the user, and sometimes installed without the users knowledge. What's the state of your malware protection? Have you scanned for rootkits?
You also might want to run the System Update Readiness Tool to find problems. -
Toshiba Support for Microsoft Windows Service Packs ?

Vista Service Pack 2 install error message and Realtek incompatibility
Just want to inform that service pack 2 install gave me an error message when I installed it on a clean rebuild of my Toshiba laptop. Something about an incompatible driver. As I had already installed the latest drivers from Toshiba pages, I choose the 'ignore and continue' action at install, and the update successfully completed.
I then ran the Windows Upgrade advisor utility (just search a Microsoft website to find it) which checks for hardware/driver compliance with Vista.
Their report says that the Realtek RTL8187B wireless adapter driver has an issue with Vista, and recommends that the latest driver be installed. Since I do have the latest Toshiba driver installed, what is the procedure to follow?
The wifi connection with this laptop functions well, with the only 'problem' being a 45 second delay when waking up from sleep mode to being able to open a new web page. This is the time it takes to establish a connection to my router/modem.> Their report says that the Realtek RTL8187B wireless adapter driver has an issue with Vista, and recommends that the latest driver be installed. Since I do have the latest Toshiba driver installed, what is the procedure to follow?
You could try the Realtek WLan driver from the Realtek driver page.
There you can find the latest Realtek drivers for different Realtek chips.
But to be honest I would not be worried about this massage.
Something like that can happens always after any installations of the Microsoft service packs.
I remember that many drivers were not supported by SP1 but they ran properly
So take it easy ;) -
WCS service pack and antivirus
Are there any known issues by installing an antivirus software or upgrading to (microsoft) service pack 2 or 3 ?
I have seen no issues running antivirus on the WCS server. If you want to be extra careful you can exclude the directory with solid.db in it:
WCSInstallDir\webnms\db\eval_kit\standalone
Currently Windows 2003/SP2 and Windows 2003 R2/SP2 32-bit installations with all critical and security Windows updates installed is the supported OS specification. -
Compatibility between Exchange 2007 service packs
Hi all, I have 5 servers Exchange:
- 3 Servers CAS and HUB
- 2 Servers Mailbox server in Microsoft Failover Cluster (MSCS)
Domain Controllers are all
Windows Server 2003 SP2
The versions of Exchange 2007 SP1 servers are all:
8.1 Build 240.6
I have thought about installing SP3 and RU13 in all 5 servers for Exchange, but I'm going to install SP3 and RU13 on 2 servers CAS / HUB and the following week at the other CAS / HUB server.
Finally, the following week in the two Mailbox Servers.
Is there any problem if I miss 2 servers CAS / HUB with SP3 RU13 and the other CAS / HUB in SP1, this will only be for a few days?
Is there any problem if I leave the servidors Mailbox Servers in SP1 while CAS / HUB are in SP3 RU13, this will only be for a few days?
regards
Microsoft Certified IT Professional Server AdministratorHi Yupikaiey.
Only thing you should be concerned is if you have CAS-CAS proxy or the Mailbox Cluster part.
Your current plan looks good. Just stay alert for any uncommon issues popping up, which would normally mean due to the difference.
If you upgrade your servers in this order, you may avoid potential service interruptions.
Details below:
Version Constrains are more of between roles of 2007-2010-2013 and not between same version SPs or RUs.
Exchange 2013 Server Role Architecture
The Past: Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010
Our goal was to make these server roles autonomous units. Unfortunately, that goal did not materialize in either Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010. The server roles were tightly coupled along four key dimensions:
2.This also necessitated a tight versioning alignment – a down-level Hub Transport or Client Access shouldn’t communicate with a higher version Mailbox server; in some cases this was enforced (e.g., Exchange 2007 Hub Transport servers cannot deliver messages
to Exchange 2010 Mailbox servers), but in other cases they were not (e.g., an Exchange 2010 SP1 Client Access server can render data from an Exchange 2010 SP2 Mailbox server).
The versioning restriction also meant that you could not simply upgrade a single server role to take advantage of new functionality – you had to upgrade all of them.
The Present: Exchange Server 2013
If I upgrade the Mailbox server with a service pack or cumulative update, then for a given mailbox hosted on that server, all data rendering and content conversions for that mailbox will be local, thus removing version constraints and functionality issues
that arose in previous releases.
Exchange 2007 Servicing
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/dd421853(v=exchg.80).aspx
Deployment Order
Our test infrastructure guarantees that Exchange hotfixes work across multiple server roles. The order in which you apply the update rollup to the servers is not important except if you are deploying CAS-CAS proxying. Because the update rollups are not segmented
for different Exchange server roles or for specific file configurations, apply each update rollup package to all Exchange 2007 servers in your environment.
If you have multiple Active Directory sites, and if you deploy a Client Access server in the proxy sites that do not face the Internet, you must
apply the update rollup to the Internet-facing Client Access servers
and to the non-Internet-facing Client Access servers in the proxy site simultaneously. For other Exchange 2007 configurations, we recommend that you
apply the update rollup package to the Client Access servers before
you apply it to servers that are running other Exchange 2007 server roles, such as the Mailbox server role, the Hub Transport server role, and the Edge Transport server role.
Note:
Applying service packs and update rollups to clustered Mailbox servers requires specific planning and application steps. For more information about how to apply service packs to Exchange 2007 clustered Mailbox servers, see
Upgrading Clustered Mailbox Servers to Exchange 2007 SP1 or later. For more information about how to apply update rollups to Exchange 2007 clustered Mailbox servers, see
Applying Exchange 2007 Update Rollups to Clustered Mailbox Servers.
For Patching and compatibility between versions:
Determine the service pack level of Exchange.
Update rollups are service pack dependent. For example, an Update Rollup 5 package is available for Exchange 2007 and for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1. To determine the service pack level of Exchange, examine the
ExchangeVersion property. For more information about how to view the
ExchangeVersion property and about the build number that is associated with each Exchange version, see
Exchange Server 2007: Platforms, Editions, and Versions.

Unable to uninstall the SP2 client
You can upgrade the client (via hotfix) and uninstall the hotfix, but you will not be able to remove the SP2 client
AppvVfs filter driver will not create an instance, therefore applications will not be able to read into existing streamed VFS content, or trigger sparse files to stream content. (you can still stream the content via other means, like the UI or powershell)
Because of the AppvVfs filter driver not instantiating, applications that depend on licences that exist in VFS will not be able to be read causing certain applications to react as if the license does not exist or is an incorrect formatResolution:
Check for the existence of a hidden folder named %appdata% in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Application Virtualization\Client folder. (You will need to un-check the folder options box in windows explorer for "Hide

If the hidden %appdata% folder exists, delete it.
Proceed to uninstall the App-V client
After a clean uninstall and removal of remnants of the client, reinstall the client again and apply the latest hotfix available (Hotfix 2 for SP2 at a minimum). -

In Windows 8 I received the error iTunes Library .iti file is locked on a disk or you do not have permission for this file. I can open itunes in the compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
I've tried changing permissions and sharing - nothing seems to work. mat be a Windows 8 issue???You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter. That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.
Read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914 -

Unable to activate after Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455) is deployed
I'm having a very strange issue with deploying the "Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455)". Here's what I see:
Deploying to a Windows 7 SP1 system fully patched as of 7/29/2013
Using SCCM 2007 R3
Task Sequence installs Office Professional Plus 2010
Task Sequence installs Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455)
The Office Professional Plus 2010 install was configured to use our key using the Office Custimization Tool (setup.exe /admin)
When I try to activate the suite using any of the installed applications (word, excel, outlook or powepoint) I get the error "An unspecified error has occurred. Your request cannot be processed at this time. Please try again later. (0x80070190)"
If I repair the install then try the activation again it works right away. This is a good work around for single installs but for my needs of multiple system deployment and for pushing out the Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455) to other systems
in my environment this will not work.
Can anyone please suggest a solution to this problem?
Thank you,Hi
According to my research, this issue occurs when one of the following conditions are true:
If you have CD emulation software installed, a registry key is preventing the hardware ID from being acquired.
A required registry key is not set correctly or is missing.
