SQLDeveloper and Application Express

G'day
Can anyone provide some instructions or resources on setting up SQL Developer to connect to the APEX database. My understanding is that APEX_PUBLIC_USER is the proxy account that is used to execute all database calls.
How does one use your username and what are the consequences or actions that need to be carried out to ensure that permissions grants etc are not broken by using a username other than APEX_PUBLIC_USER.
Many thanks
Regards
Graeme

APEX_PUBLIC_USER has access to the Schema so wont be affected
It has Create Session privilege which is all it needs along with access to all public objects.
The parsing schema (owner) of your application is the only user (schema) that requires privileges. All code belonging to your application is "parsed as" this schema dynamically by the Application Express engine using a super-user version of dbms_sql.

  • Oracle SQL Developer and Application Express

    Hi all,
I have a SQL Developer 1.5.4.59.40 and have an application developed in Application Express 10G XE with APEX 3.1.2. I have successfully opened my schema which owns an application, but to my surprise there is no node for viewing my application????? How can i view my application?

    Hello,
If you go to your parsing scheme in SQL Developer for ex. SCOTT you'll see a node Application Express.
That should list all the applications that have the SCOTT parsing scheme defined in your APEX application.

  • Difference between OA Framework and Application Express?!

    Hi,
both are for the E-Business Suite and I read that both are in the Webbrowser (=HTML?!). So what are the differences and what is regulary used? thx

    Read this,
This is straight reply by Sara Woodhull , on this stefan chan's blog, see the fifth reply:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/discuss/msgReader$1721
From the APEX web page at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html: "Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX), formerly called HTML DB, is a rapid web application development tool for the Oracle database. Using only a web browser and limited programming experience, you can develop and deploy professional applications that are both fast and secure."
This would have all the same integration issues I mentioned for ADF: no flexfields, no personalization, profiles, and so on. If you are building a completely separate app that happens to use EBS tables, you could use APEX, but you'd have to handle a lot of stuff that OAF does for you.
BTW, keep in mind that most of the EBS apps handle validation in the UI layer (for Forms) or BC4J, or PL/SQL. You'd need to be sure you handle validation as well so you don't fill your tables with bad data.

  • SQLDeveloper and Oracle Express

I have SQL Developer installed, and working.
Then I installed DAtabase Express; after that I've been unable to connect to any database like I used to. I usually use TNS connection, but now SQLDev is reading the TNSNames from the XP database, instead of the one in oracle home. I think that is the reason I can't connect anymore...
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
    Thanks for any help.

One thing I have noticed is that when you install an Oracle product using the installer (such as XE or a client) the installer puts the new product at the very beginning of your path. I normally have to edit my PATH variable to put my Oracle 10g Client home directory back at the beginning.
That being said, it is possible to have one TNSNAMES.ORA file refer to (include) others. See this forum thread from last April: Re: IFILE directives in tnsnames.ora generate apparently harmless errors

  • Basic problem in displaying the pdf and images in Application express

    Hi,
I have oracle 10g and application express.
I have already stored the images and pdfs using PLSQL in table with following columns
TableA(vessel number, cruise number, image blob, pdf blob)
now for every vessel, cruise combination there is a particular image and pdf.
    so in my htmldb page.
I have created 2 select list for vessel and cruise respectively.
now on selecting these lists i want to diaplay their corresponding image and pdf.
How can i do this? I just somehow miss the basic knowledge of how to do this.
Should i create a html region or a report region for the image and pdf.
under what region the image and pdf goes. and on sleecting the vessel, cruise can i show hyperlinks and upon selecting the hyperlinks a image and pdf opens in a new window.
or can i create 2 regions and display the image and pdf right in the region itself.
Can someone please guid eme please.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    Hi Philip.
I suggest switching to the Application Express forum.
Pretty sure it'll be easier for you to find the answers over there

  • I can't get Application Express and OBIEE to both work on my laptop

    Hello,
I had just installed and configured OBIEE on my laptop where I had successfully installed Application Express 3.0. Both were working , however, I was having an issue creating a ODBC connection with the "SH" schema. Later I had realised this OBIEE problem was actually do to the fact that the password for "SH" had to be changed in SQLPlus so that it matched with what was in the sh connection pool. When that was corrected, I no longer could log into Application Express.
Right after I noticed that my Application Express login page was coming up "Page not found" I noticed that I could not start my "OracleXETNSListener" without stopping "OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener" and even when I did get "OracleXETNSListener" running I could not bring up the Application Express login page.
I just don't understand how changing the password to the schema "sh" for OBIEE had some how changed the network connection to the Application Express login page.
I hope I can find some brilliant networking guru to help me with this problem. I really would like both OBIEE and Application Express to be working on my laptop running Windows XE.
    Thanks in advance.
    Linda

You probably have a conflict in ORACLE_HOME's or perhaps a conflict in the ports between your two HTTP servers. Does APEX work when all BIEE processes are stopped, including the other database? You might not want to have 2 databases on that machine as it's a huge waste of resources, so you might think about pointing BIEE at XE. You could install APEX in the 10g database, but then you have to make sure the App Server with BIEE contains mod_plsql (which it probably doesn't). If I had it to do from the beginning, I would install 11.1 and run APEX and BIEE out of the same DB. 11.1, like XE, can use the Embedded PL/SQL Gateway (EPG), plus it has APEX 3.x installed by default.

  • Not able to login - application express 4

I have downloaded oracle express 10g, and application express 4
configured on Scenario 2: Downloading from OTN and Configuring the Embedded PL/SQL Gateway
    followed the installation procedures religiously
now i am not able to login thru admin
can anyone suggest what could be the issue

but in solman there is Microsoft SQL SERVER 2005 is installed and i m not able to connect to database for delete sap*
So no user/password, no access to the DB... then you simply cant logon.
You need to at lease be able to use a sql session to delete the sap* user at DB level to be able to logon. Changing the paremeter login/no_automatic_user_sapstar when SAP* exist in that client does not work.

  • Oracle Portal, Application Express, Oracle Forms/Reports 10g - which one?

    Hi,
I have Oracle 10g database and Application Express installed on one linux box.
second linux box has Oracle HTTP server running from where i call the htmldb pages.
3rd linux box has Oracle Application Server 10.1.2 installed along with SSO, Portal 10.1.4 , Forms Server etc.
Now, i see there are 3 ways i can develop web applications
    1. using Application Express and http server which is very basic and simple.
    2. using Oracle Forms/Reports 10g and forms/reports server
    3. Oracle Portal 10.1.4 in Application Server 10.1.2
Can someone guide me, which one of the above 3 is worth sticking on forever for developing web applications. i am really not sure which one of the above is best for Web developement in terms of long term planning. and i believe all 3 of the above can be integrated with Oracle SSO for authentication.
Can someone guide me please to select one of the above and can you explain me why for my better understanding of the different tools?
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    Hi Philip.
If you already have Oracle Portal, I think that portal is the best solution.
Portal can be integrated with others applications using SSO.
Oracle portal have a lot of features that help you to develop web applications.
If portal does not offer what you want, you can develop your own portlets using java or plsql.
Take a look at the default home page of oracle portal.
Look better the features that portal offer to you.

Unfortunately I can't provide much help, other than that we have seen this before with 9iR2, but haven't yet figured out when this does occur, so not sure if it's related to a specific patch version. If possible, I'd recommend upgrading to database 10g or higher. And if we do figure out under what circumstances this problem comes up in 9iR2, I'll post this on the forum.

  • Application Express Install - Login and images don't work

I followed the instructions (as best I understood them) to install Apex on my database, and then setup an Oracle HTTP server to work with it.
    The problems I have are:
When i goto the "first" page, which for me is: http://tomcatvs01.traxusers.com:7777/pls/apex/apex_admin
    1. The "Application Express" image at the top doesn't come out, which indicates to me the images weren't setup correctly, despite my best efforts.
    2. I'm not sure what my "username" should be. I remember specifying a desired password when I ran the sql to install the Apex on the database, but I don't remember specifying a username. I assume it is: APEX_PUBLIC_USER
    3. The big problem... whatever Username/password I use, "nothing" happens when I click the "Login" button. With MSIE, it shows the exclamation "error on page." icon on lower left side when I click "Login", which details show this error message:
    Line: 1
    Char: 1
    Error: Object expected
    Code: 0
URL: My URL given above, but mixed with what appears to be the session ID, which is the same URL that i'm taken to when I goto the page in the first place.
It doesn't work with FireFox either, and I've tried the client/browser from multiple machines.
    Advice appreciated.
My setup is to use an Oracle 10g release 02 database.
I installed Oracle HTTP server from the Companion CD on another machine, which already had an Oracle home/client of it's own.
I then installed APEX sql on the database (i first ran the webtoolkit sql) .
On the machine I put the HTTP server on, I copied the apex images to: E:\oracleHTTP\product\10.2.0\db\Apache\Apache\images
And I configured my dads.conf file (in E:\oracleHTTP\product\10.2.0\db\Apache\modplsql\conf) as such:
    # ============================================================================
    # mod_plsql DAD Configuration File
    # ============================================================================
    # 1. Please refer to dads.README for a description of this file
    # ============================================================================
    # Note: This file should typically be included in your plsql.conf file with
    # the "include" directive.
    # Hint: You can look at some sample DADs in the dads.README file
    # ============================================================================

    PlsqlDatabaseUsername APEX_PUBLIC_USER
    PlsqlDefaultPage apex
    PlsqlDatabasePassword apex
    Allow from all
    </Location>

OKay, I kept reading other people's posts and I found the main culprit of my problems. I needed to add a forward-slash to my images directory specification in my dads.conf file. Now my images come out, and my login button "works".
However, I still can't login because i don't know the username (at least now it tells me the credentials are not correct!)
What is the username? I remember when running the @apexins SQL, i specified the password. But I don't remember every specifying a username, I even reviewed the instructions and couldn't find where I might have defined that. Please help! Can i extract it from one of the tables that was created? If so, I'd appreciate pointers as to which one exactly.

  • How to stop and start only the process of Oracle Application Express?

I'd like to know how to stop the process of Oracle Application Express on my server installed oracle express package.
After installed Oracle Express edition, not only oracle database server processes but also Oracle Application Express, such as http server, is started automatically...
I hope to stop and start Application Express on demand but is this feature enabled?

Oracle Apex is an API, if that helps you understand / visualize. You do not start Apex process nor stop it.
When an Apex session starts it starts calling the API.
You can however start / stop the listener. It may be OHS, ApexListener and the J2EE container running it, OC4J or any other "server" that you are using.
The built-in EPG is something like an API again, you cannot start / stop it but you can disable/enable it with DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT API.

  • Display date and Time in Oracle Application Express Page

    Hi
I have a requirement of showing the date and time in the top left corner of the page which should be updated at all times . The format is DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS.
I am able to display the date but not the time . Also the time should be updating on its own to the last second.
Another requirement is that on selecting a particular value from the drop down the table values displayed should be filtered
Thanks in advance for helping me out
you can also send in the responses to [email protected]
    Regards
    Jude Franco

    Hello,
I am able to display the date but not the time Probably due to your NLS settings not displaying the time component for dates. However you can manually specify the output format like this -
    jes@DBTEST> select to_char(sysdate, 'HH24:MI:SS DD-MON-YYYY') as TS from dual;
    TS
    10:47:45 10-DEC-2008
Another requirement is that on selecting a particular value from the drop down the table values displayed should be filtered Really need more details on that (remember assume that we know nothing about your requirements other than what you tell us). However at a high-level you need to include the drop down value in the query predicate used for your report, for example -
    select
      e.ename,
      e.sal
    from
      emp e
    where
e.deptno = NVL(:P1_DEPTNO, e.deptno)Would use the value from the P1_DEPTNO select list (presumably displaying department names) and use it to filter the result. The NVL is there so that if no dept is selected then the query by default shows all the records.
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • Oracle Pl/Sql and Oracle Application Express for Beginners

    Good day,
Have a prodigy that is strongly interested in oracle application express.Haven know that he will only do we in APEX if he is good in pl/sql and have some skills in html and javascripts.
For such person, what are the books that i can recommend for him, that will guide and assist him? Will be highly grateful if anybody can assist.

I think it also falsely gives the impression that one does not need to understand the database at all because Apex can do everything for you...This is why I echo Munky when he says that you need a solid understanding of data models and the database before attempting to build an application.
I absolutely concur with this view. When I first started using ApEx, I was basically given a user guide and told to get on with it :-) Subsequently, for the first 6 months or so, I built probably fairly lousy (but functional) apps until I got a better grasp of Oracle architecture.
That being said, SQL is an absolute must if you are going to work on a database. PL/SQL really should be learned as well because your application will be limited without it. CSS and Javascript and nice to have's, but they can be learned as you go. Since all of the api's are built in pl/sql, it would really hinder what you could do if you didn't know it.One resource I have found very useful is the good old 'Ant' book a.k.a. Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Feuerstein, et al. I have a well-thumbed 4th edition sitting on my desk at the moment - weirdly for a text book, rather a joy to read.
I personally found Jay-Lew's "Cost-based Oracle Fundamentals" a somewhat bitterer pill to swallow - tough on the way down but good for one's constitution!

  • Defining and Viewing BLOB Data in Oracle Application Express 3.2

    Hello All,
There is a nice tutorial for working with images in Application Express 3.1 entitled "Defining and Viewing BLOB Data in Oracle Application Express 3.1". I have 3.2 and I am finding that I can't follow this tutorial... Is there any similar how to for 3.2?
    Thank you,
    Daniel

    Hi,
I have just gone through the first steps in my OTN workspace app, and I do get the Implementation option (showing Interactive or Classic). In fact, my page at this point matches exactly the image shown in the tutorial.
My OTN workspace app uses Apex version 3.2. The Interactive reports are relatively new, so older versions of Apex would not have this option. But you say that you are using version 3.2? If you just try to create a report page on, say, EMP, do you get the option to select Interactive or Classic?
