Microsoft Word documents--space?

I got the smallest size MacBook because I am using it for college and thought I would not need that much space for all my Word documents. I had this assumption because on a PC, my average Word documents (using Windows XP) took up about 36 KB of space. I am now writing my first essay on my new Mac and have found that after only a paragraph, this document is 80 KB! Why is this so much bigger than on Windows??

It is possible that the Mac version stores more metadata than the Windows version, so that there's more overhead. But that may not be the only reason...
Can you do something for me. Highlight the Word file in its folder, and choose File/Get Info. You will see two numbers for Size. It will say "_ KB on dis (_ bytes)"
What do yours say, and can you move the file to Windows and check the size in Properties? Here's what I'm getting at.
I have a Word file and I'm going to check the sizes now on Mac and Windows.
On the Mac:
24 KB on disk (20,992 bytes)
In Windows XP, the same file as reported by Properties:
Size: 20.5 KB (20,992 bytes)
Size on disk: 32.0 KB (32,768 bytes)
Again, that's the same file. Here is what is going on:
Every file has two "sizes." One is the size of the file, and the other is the space it occupies on disk. What's the difference? Suppose you have a jetliner, a child, and a fat guy. How much space do they take up? By area, the child is much smaller than the fat guy. As far as the airline is concerned, though, both take up the same space: One seat each.
Your disk is divided into blocks. If a file needs less than a block, it must take the whole block anyway. Let's apply that to the size readouts above. There are two sizes reported on Mac and Windows, "Size" and "Size on disk."
"Size" is the *actual size*, or the size of the file itself. On Mac and Windows, *this is the same*: 20,992 bytes, or around 20.5 KB (that is, 20,992/1024 bytes to a kilobyte). On the Mac, it's the second number. On Windows, it's the first set of numbers.
"Size on disk" is the size on the block size of the drive as currently formatted. On the Mac, it's 24 KB. On Windows, it's 32 KB. Why is this different? Because one hard drive is formatted one way, and the other drive was formatted the other way. It would be like how First Class has fewer seats than Coach Class on an airplane, so in First Class where the seats are bigger, a single person uses up more of the cabin. My guess is that my Mac drive was formatted with 8 KB blocks so it rounds up to 24 KB, and my Windows XP drive is formatted with 16 KB blocks so it rounds up to 32 KB.
So what I'm getting at is it's possible your file may not really be bigger on the Mac, but the drive may be formatted differently than on your PC, affecting how the file size rounds up.
Another possible answer, I don't know about Word for Windows, but on the Mac, if you have Allow Fast Saves turned on, files can really bloat up more than they should, best to turn it off.
Still, anything under a megabyte is considered tiny these days.

  • How can I restore my Microsoft Word Documents which became Unix Executable Files after my Macbook Pro Crashed?

After my MacBook Pro suddenly crashed, we had Best Buy's Geek Squad attempt to save the files. According to them, they were successful in doing so and put all of the saved files in a folder on my desktop which they labeled "Backup". The problem is, all of the files are in a Unix Executable format. When you double click on any of them, they pull up the terminal and that's it. After researching the issue and trying to grasp what was going on, I learned that you can open these files in Text Edit and sometimes find the file extension (.png .jpeg .amr .qt) that belongs at the end of the filename in order for it to be pulled up. In doing this, I had some success restoring some photos, audio files, and videos. However, no luck at all in restoring any of my Microsoft Word documents or even finding out which Unix Executables are Word documents. I've even tried to add .docx to various files just to see if I would luck out. Nope .  Any help would be SO SO greatly appreciated!!!

Just to make sure, your Mac meets Snow Leopard's requirements?
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Yes, Lion does require that  you have Snow Leopard installed so you have access to the Mac App Store.
And you do need to be running v10.6.8 in order to upgrade to Lion >  http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/
When you verified the startup disk using Disk Utility, what were the results?
Wouldn't hurt to do that again. From your admin account launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab. Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the startup disk needs repairing, boot from your install disk to make repairs >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
While you have the DU window open, check Capacity & Available at the bottom of the window. Make sure there is a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • HP Laserjet PRO MFP125nw doesn't print Microsoft Word documents from PC

    Hello.
I've recently bought a brand new HP Laserjet PRO MFP125nw printer. The functions seemed really nice and the price was acceptable. I've brought it to my home, installed it following the manual, connected it to Wi-Fi etc. It generally works fairly well. PDF files are printed perfectly well, the scaning function works and it's generally a nice piece of technology.
The only problem is that it just doesn't want to pring Microsoft Word documents from my PC. It prints it perfectly when I try to print .docx from my smartphone using the app, but it doesn't respond when I try doing it from the PC.
My Office version is 2007 Enterprise. Do you have any idea what I should do?
    Thank you in advance

Thank you a lot for a quick reply, Cbert. It's fantastic to see HP actually reading their forums and trying to help!
I'll try plugging it into the wall and directly to the PC with a USB, we'll see if it works out.
About Word, i've already tried reinstalling Word, even installed a 2003 version to check if it works with that. Well it doesn't. And as i've written before, I tried turning some .docx files to .pdf using a converter, but it still doesn't print them.
Anyway, i'll try the first two points and keep you updated, thanks!

  • How can I change a Microsoft Word document file into a picture file?

How can I change a Microsoft Word document file into a picture or jpeg file? I am wanting to make the image I created my background on my macbook pro.

After I had the document image the way I wanted it, I saved it as a web page and went from there. Below are the steps starting after I did the "save as" option in Word:
    1) Select "Save As Web Page". I changed the location from documents to pictures when the window came up to save it as a web page.
    2) Go to "Finder" on you main screen, or if it's on your main toolbar at the bottom.
    3) Click on the "Pictures" tab and find the file you just re-saved as a web page. (I included "web page" or something similar in the new title so I could easily find the correct file I was looking for)
    4) Open the correct file and then "right click" on the actual image. (Use 2 fingers to do so on a Mac)
    5) Select 'Use Image As Desktop Picture", and voilà! The personally created image, or whatever it is that you wanted, is now your background.
**One problem I encountered while doing this is that the image would show up like it was right-aligned in relation to the whole screen. The only way I could figure how to fix this was to go back to the very original document in Word, (the one before it was saved as a web page), and move everything over to the left.
I hope this helps someone else who was as frustrated as I was with something that I thought would have been very simple to do! If you have any tips or suggestions of your own, please feel free to share. : )

So I've been trying to open some Microsoft Word Documents and it says it can't be opened because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. What do I do about this?

    Workarounds:
    1.  Restore the OS X that you formerly used to run Word 2004;
    2.  Partition your hard drive or attach an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) so that you can "dual-boot" into Microsoft Word 2004;
    3.  Upgrade to Word 2011 or use an alternative program; or
    4.  The solution I use: Install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels 7 or 8:

  • Integrating Microsoft Word documents with ADF BC and JClient technologies

    Hi,
We are developing a Police Management System in JAVA with the Oracle Jdeveloper 10.1.2.0.0. We are using for the access to the data, in the businesses tier, the ADF Business Component Technology and for the User Interface, in the client tier, the JClient for ADF Technology. The used Database is Oracle Enterprise Edition 10.1.0.3.0. with the intermedia option.
We were looking for ways to upload and insert Microsoft Word Documents into a view object using JClient on the client tier. We have found the following options:
    1) Oracle Intermedia database datatype ORDSYS.ORDDOC and their corresponding ADF Business Compomnents domains -> The problem is using Jclient on the client tier. In Oracle JDeveloper 10g, developers will not be able to create new applications using JClient interMedia controls. JUImage (limited to images only) is the JClient control available to access multimedia in the database.
    2) Oracle COM Automation Feature -> We were studying the possibility to built a solution with Oracle and Microsoft Word using Oracle COM Automation Feature for Java. The problem is Oracle COM Automation Feature requires Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003. We are using a database on linux, therefore this option is not valid.
    3) CLOBs in database and theirs corresponding ADF Business Components domains -> But I don't know how to use ADF BC objects in JClient tier.
    Can someone please help?
    Thanks,
    Patri

    Hi,
I have worked with BLOBS or CLOBS and their corresponidng ADF Business Components domains, but I don't know how to use ADF BC objects in JClient tier.
To sum up, I want to upload, insert and view microsoft word documents by using a JClient application using ADF/BC4J components.

  • CAN'T OPEN MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENTS AFTER DOWNLOADING MAVERICK

I downloaded Maverick OS X 10.9.3 and now I can't open my Microsoft Word documents!  HELP!!
The message I receive when trying to open a document read:  You can't open the application "Microsoft Word" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
I wish I knew this before I upgraded to Maverick.  It happened to my iphotos as well but after purchasing new software for iphoto, I have been able to retrieve my photos.
I hope I don't have to do the same for my documents.
    Thanks

I wouldn't recommend buying the boxed version of Office 2011. A new version of Office is coming out in a few months and you'll be stuck with old software. The next version of Office will be subscription only. You can buy Office 365 now and it will automatically upgrade you for free when the new version comes out. This is a monthly fee.
If paying monthly is not an option for you, you can also look at buying Office 2008. While it's End of Life software like Office 2004 (this means it will receive no further updates) it will run in Mavericks with only a few minor glitches. You might be able to buy Office 2008 at a more reasonable price. Otherwise I would like at LibreOffice or OpenOffice that Esquared mentioned above.

  • Convert 1 single microsoft word document with section breaks to multiple pdf files

I am a windows 7 users. I have a single microsoft word document which contain 1500 pages. These 1500 pages are seperated by sections breaks in the microsoft word. I am trying to convert this word document to multiple pdf files seperated by the section breaks in the Microsoft word. How can I convert the single microsoft word document with section breaks to multiple seperate pdf files?

Acrobat (Adobe PDF Printer and PDFMaker ) doesn't recognize the Section breaks.  It never has as far as I am aware.  The easiest thing to do is to manually break up a copy of the MS Word Document into the Sections you need and then create the PDFs from those MS Word documents.

Is there a way to protect a PDF document similar to a Microsoft Word document?

    Hi ,
If you could specify how exactly you want to protect the PDF that would be great .
However there are various options to protect a PDF available in Acrobat as well .
If you select the protection option in Acrobat, you will get to see several options of protecting or encrypting  a PDF .
You can encrypt it with with a password or a certificate .
You can even redact a PDF if you want .
Please go ahead and have a look at the options available to get more details and ways to protect a PDF .
Let us know if that suits your requirement .

  • Convert Adobe Form (with data) to Microsoft Word Document

    Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Standard
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    Microsoft Word 2003 SP3
I am attempting to convert an Adobe PDF Form (with data included) to a Microsoft Word document.
When I use the menu to attempt this, I get a Word document containing only the form fields.
I want to be able to grab all the text from the document, as these forms were used to fill in information for Job Descriptions, and I want to submit the text to job boards (without having to retype anything).
What are my options for obtaining this information?

    Bill:
Thank you for all of your help. I do not have the program in front of me, so I don't have a means of independently verifying this, until I go see the user tomorrow when he returns to the office ...
Just to confirm, a fillable PDF is different from a standard PDF, as it stores the form fields in a special way, likewise, the data is stored in a special way. This is actually a quite useful feature, for compiling data, if you use the form multiple times.
A standard export of a fillable PDF exports only the fields.
To get the data, I would have to choose to save form data.
To get the fields and the data, I have to print it using a PDF printer to create a new PDF document. Once I create this new PDF document, I can then export to Word as desired.
If I want ONLY form fields: (one-step process)
    Export > Microsoft Word > %filename%.DOC
If I want ONLY form data:(one-step process)
File > Save FORM DATA > FDF file format > %filename%.FDF
If I want both the form and the data: (two-step process)
File > Print to PDF > Save as %filename%.PDF
    Open %filename%.PDF > Export > Word Document
Is this the process? Pardon my confusion, but I am a newbie, and I do not have the program to test with.
Thanks for your help, kind sir.

  • Importing text from Microsoft Word documents

Can anyone offer recommendations or tips on the Import feature?  I am considering use of import for a vast amount of content from Microsoft Word documents.  I am using DW CS3 and I have heard good and bad about the import feature.  I would like to try to make it work for me and to make sure I'm using it correctly.  Many thanks! Ms. Gill

I hate to say this, but don't do that.
Ms. Web Editor (may I call you Web?), I regularly input stuff my clients send me from Microsoft Word. I never attempt an HTML conversion from Microsoft. It's just too dirty.
Instead, what I do is I copy paragraphs into Dreamweaver's Code View window, putting a <p> and a </p> before and after them.
If there are headings and sub headings in Word, I simply make them into lines without HTML, then press [Command]-1 or [Command]-2 to make those lines into <h1> or <h2> tags.
I never try to export from Word. Microsoft does not know how to create clean HTML and CSS. It is always a losing proposition to trust that they do.
