Mid 2007 to Late 2012 Mini Migration

I'm replacing a Mid '07 Mini running 10.7.5 w/ a new Late '12 mini due to frequent lockups (Beachballs), Aperture is really painful but not the only app. w/ performance issues.  I was planning on using Setup Assistant after connecting the two by Firewire. Is this a good way to go, will problems from the 5 year Mini's OS move to the new Mini? Would I be better off going w/ a fresh install, and reinstalling the Apps? Ugh!

You can still use Setup Assistant to transfer your data from the Mac mini, but I recommend you not to transfer apps in order to avoid performance problems. You can restore your user's files without any problem. Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html
After restoring your user's files, reinstall each app manually. Doing this, you won't transfer some files that you didn't need from the Mac mini and you will get a cleaner installation with a better performance.

  • Can I swap memory from a late 2012 mini to a late 2010 mini

I just upgraded the memory on my late 2012 mini.  I'm wondering if I can swap this memory into my late 2010 mini.  They are both DDR 3 204 pins.

    See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4432
As you can see, the Late 2012 Mac mini uses PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, and the Mid 2010 Mac mini uses PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz RAM, so the Mid 2010 Mac mini can't use the memory of your Late 2012 Mac mini because it isn't compatible with 1600 MHz RAM. If you try to install it, the Mac mini won't boot.
In your case, if you want more memory for the Mid 2010 Mac mini, you have to buy memory that meets the requirements of the Mid 2010 Mac mini in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_Mac_mini/DDR3 Then, you have the steps to install the RAM in the first page I gave you

  • Late 2012 Mini won't boot from ext HDD with 10.8

Having just replaced an early 2009 Mini with a later 2012 mini, I tried booting off an external HDD that is a backup with Mountain Lion 10.8 as the OS.  I selected it to be the boot drive after holding down the option key, but the boot process never went beyond the white screen/Apple logo, even after waiting for minutes.
The external drive is in a Newer 3.5" enclosure with a FW800 port connected to the Mini via a FW800 cable.  After booting from the internal drive I can view and change items in the 10.8 external drive.  This drive previously booted fine from my old Mini.
[Note:  This is not related to my earlier "Snow Leo won't boot" question.]
    Thanks

The problem is the version on the external drive, if created
on the old Mini (infered from ""This drive previously booted
fine from my old Mini.")   won't boot on the new Mini because
it lacks drivers that are not available on the general Mountain Lion
updates.  Since the new Mini came out after 10.8.2, only the
version on it contains the proper drivers.  Also, if the version
on the external drive is earlier than 10.8.2, it will never boot
as no Mac can boot to an OS older than it was shipped with.
Whenever 10.8.3 comes out, it will likely sync all current models again.

  • Need aftermarket ram specs for late 2012 mini

    Late 2012 Mini 2.3 I7 Quad/4GB and need to upgrade to 16GB.
I used the specs from the "About my Mac" window and received ram that would fit in my Mac Pro?
    Any help here?

I went through 3 sets of ram trying to get one to work (all with the specs Apple listed), finally the 4th set did.  I got this one, and it worked!

The Mid-2007 model didn't come out until June 2007, so you must have bought an earlier model. It won't run Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x), but it might run Lion (10.7.x) if you can get hold of a copy, depending on which earlier model it is.
Lion requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The first MacBook Pros came out in January 2006, but they had "Core Duo" processors (no "2"). The Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros came out in October 2006. You could have bought either in March 2007.

  • Bootcamp will not install on my late 2012 mini Samsung EVO 840 1tb SSD

I recently replaced my 256gb OWC SSD in my late 2012 Mac Mini with a Samsung EVO 840 1tb.
    I did the following
    1) Using 10.9 recovery i initialized and created a single clean partition on the 1Tb SSD
    2) I installed a clean copy of 10.9
    3) Using migration assistant i transferred apps and documents from my previous SSD via a USB 3.0 adapter to the new SSD
    4) Using Bootcamp Assistant 5 I created an ISO version of a clean copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and downloaded the Apple updated Boot Camp drivers to the same 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive
    5) Using Bootcamp Assistant created a 199gb Bootcamp partition on the new Samsung SSD which appeared to go to completion
    6) Mini restarted from the Bootcamp USB drive and Windows started successfully
    7) I chose Windows 7 Home Premium install
    8) I got the "which partition do you want to use to install Windows" screen, chose the Bootcamp partition, using the advanced option I chose format which appeared to complete, hit NEXT and then got an error that windows could not install because it could not find the NTFS partition, and then i was stuck.
When I rebooted I first got the Unable to find a bootable disk, hit any key error. I then physically shut down the computer, held down the alt key chose the Mac partition and the computer successfully booted. I could see the Bootcamp partition and according to Disk Utilities, the partition was formatted as NTFS.
The only connections to the Mini were a 30" Apple Cinema via a Apple Mini display connector, the keyboard and mouse via USB, and the USB Bootcamp Created 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive. I also have an internal Apple 1 tb hard drive with no applications installed. In the apps installed on the Samsung does include Parallels 9.
What have i done wrong or missed? IF nothing it appears that the Bootcamp assistant supplied with 10.9 may have an issue with my Hardware setup including the Samsung EVO840 1tb drive.

There are known SATA speed issues with Macs and EVO 1TB. Please check in System Profiler -> SATA for SATA status of the EVO. It seems to work on OSX side, but not Bootcamp/Windows.
Please check for any firmware updates for the EVO on the Samsung website.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2010 - iMac late 2012 in target mode?

Can I connect a MacBook Pro mid 2010 with Mini Display Port with a late 1012 iMac in target mode? Thanks.

A 2010 MBP does not support Thunderbolt technology so that is not an avenue for you.  A Fire wire with one of these adapters should enable you to connect the two devices:

  • SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012 client migration via Powershell

    Hi
I'm looking for a controlled way to migrate a SCCM 2007 server client to SCCM 2012. A push of SCCM Console is no option.
I 'll do all the testing but hoped to gain some time by having these questions answered:
*can an install of SCCM 2012 client be remotely triggered in one go (no uninstall of 2007 needed)?
*if uninstall is needed (of sccm 2007 client), does it need a reboot?
What command to use (preferrably powershell):
    \\ourserver\Client\ccmsetup.exe" -argumentlist "SMSSITECODE=sitecode","SMSMP=oursccmserver","SMSCACHESIZE=8000","FSP=oursccmserver","CCMLOGMAXSIZE=104857600"
OR (guess that's the command SCCM is using)
    Install-CMClient-DeviceName$ComputerName-IncludeDomainController$False-SiteCodePRD-ForceReinstall$True-AlwaysInstallClient$True-Verbose
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

do I need to import the machine in SCCM 2012 also or launching the SCCM 2012 install from a SCCM 2007
    will do this?
How will you do that? This does not work at all when using client push obviously. You can only use packages/programs to update clients to CM12 in that case and that's something you did not want to do.

  • Late 2012 Mini and Trackpad Issue

I recently replaced my Mac Pro (1,1) with a mini.  The boot drive is an SSD and I have four external drives (3TB each) using USB 3 (for 3 of them, one through a USB 3 hub) and Firewire for one (the time machine drive).  It's working great.  However...the Apple Trackpad, every now and then, seems to skip around...rather than a fluid movement, it gets a bitter jittery.  If I turn the trackpad off and back on again, it's fine for awhile  Any thoughts?

Have the trackpad here with a 2011 mini -- no issues as you describe. You might also consider removing the trackpad from Bluetooth preferences, cycle power on the trackpad, and add it back to Bluetooth preferences. I have also found that the lower the battery level on BT devices, the less responsive they become. I also use the Apple BT mouse.
    Trackpad settings:
    Following settings:
Point & ClickAll enabled except Three finger drag
    Scroll & ZoomAll enabled
More GesturesAll enabled except App Exposé
    Battery: 44%

  • Spinning beachball on new iMac (late 2012-2013) & migration prob

    Supposed Problem:
    Migration apparently partially failed.
Migration assistant says to retry loading apps from older (Lion) iMac to new Mountain Lion (10.8.2).
I can't seem to re-initiate migration assistant, so that the two machines recognize each other.
Skipping the retry: Getting a lot of spinning beachballs for no good reason.
    Any ideas?
    Scenario:
Brand new iMac 2.7 GHz with Mountain Lion.
    Migrated Applications folder.
It said to retry, that something failed in the migration. (I presume its a few Universal apps). I have not been successful in reconnecting the two.
The machine works - until it stalls, hangs -- spins the beachball & becomes unresponsive for a time.
    Another Q:
All the migration assistant directions say to connect to the same network. That presumes through your router which is ONLINE.
Is that safe to do - since apparently the Macs now ship with the firewall turned off?
The new machine does not have firewire. Which leaves ethernet.
Drilling down, there are instructions which imply creating a safe network configuration but never explains how,
or else direct connecting using ethernet. Is there a manual with detail instructions & explaining ramifications?

    Thanks, guys (or gals)...
    Migration Assistant
I've never bothered with MA more than once. It didn't seem as robust of featured as it ought to be. Didn't really want to buy more software ontop of it by going to CCC or something like that.
    What Migrated
The only thing I moved was the applications folder. That may still have a universal app in it, or two.
Everything runs fine - until it doesn't. Leaving me rather annoyed. A brand new machine shouldn't have a "gotcha" associated & 16 GB of installed RAM should blush if it ever sees the beach ball on a simple browser launch!
    Lions & Lions
I have several external drives. Was hoping to just run the migration overnight rather than back anything up & work from that.
The thing though: I am moving from Lion on the older machine to Mountain Lion on the new one, so I've got to figure out how to acquire Mountain Lion again. It not a matter of pulling it off Time Machine, because what I would get is the wrong OS.
Aside: I have no interest in moving the older machine to ML (the last vintage of iMac that can run ML) until I know all my apps work.
I am not going to update any software I don't HAVE to at this time - that would cost much more than the iMac did.
I would call Apple for the tech support, & may eventually do so...
How about the idea that an online router gets used as the network conduit for the transfer to begin with - on what turns out is a new machine without the firewall active by default.
OK. too much needless information... How do I load Mountain Lion if I clear thew machine?

  • Mac Mini Late 2012 OS X 10.9.4 loosing network connectivity

I haven't found the exact issue on the forums nor outside it so I'm creating a new thread.
My Late 2012 Mini started loosing network connectivity after upgrading to 10.9.4, both WiFi and Ethernet.
Sometimes it takes around 5 minutes, sometimes more than 30 but the connectivity gets disrupted continuously, the packets stop going in or out for around 30 seconds. I've done PRAM and SMC resets, I've changed network locations, nothing helps and I've found nothing interesting in the system logs.
Also I can't login to the Apple bugtracker due to some error so I'm reporting it here.
The only USB devices i have connected are keyboard and mouse.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I have a late 2012 mac mini with an i5 2 core can I replace it with an i7 quad core?

I have a late 2012 mac mini with an i5 2 core can I replace it with an i7 quad core?

A few places online may still offer the i7 2.3GHz quad-core Late 2012 MINI (Oct 2012 to Oct 2014)
that allows the user-upgrade of RAM to 16GB, and this one I've seen is a Server model and has
two 1-TB Hard Disk Drives. The B&H store in NY online has this listed, if in stock now, price &
shipping in continental US is good until tomorrow.
Your i5 dual-core is still desirable to many, & you may be able to resell it if not needed.
    Good luck & happy computing!
