MIDI madness

Please speak slowly because I am the "weak link" when it comes to understanding MIDI. I have a Akai (Midi Pad Controller) that connects to my G5 via USB and a Kawaii keyboard via MIDI cable to Fastlane (Midi hub) via USB to my G5. I can't figure out how to separate out the two the two controllers. I want to simultaneously have both Akai and Kawaii controllers trigger different instruments.

check out the manual on page 121-122 under the topic "MIDI Multi-Track Recording." Now I've never had to record two different instruments at once (I only use the "layer" mode) but the manual seems to explain it well enough that you should have no problem.
All the best!

  • MIDI Madness - Behringer BCF2000

I’m trying to get a new controller working in FCP 5. I have the Behringer DCF2000. I have read on the this site that several people are using this device with success.
The device shows up in Audio MIDI Setup and is set to port 1. I have also set it up in FCP with Control Surfaces.
Device settings are U-1 (have tried other “U” settings) for USB only and choosing P-2 as the surface setup and nothing happens, if fact the only thing that talks to FCP is P-3’s 7th knob and it only works on track one (that is not what it is mapped for) nothing else moves anything, levels or panning.
I don’t seem to be able to get it to work in STP but in Garageband every know and fader will raise and lower levels on the selected track.
Now I can set MIDI control up in Motion so there is communication go on.
BTW, I try this controller on another Mac and another controller on this Mac (PB 17” Mac OS 10.4.6 and FCP 5.1.1)
I’m up against a brick wall any suggestion?

    Hey Krautrocker )
I got one. Faders, pan, transport, solo & mute all work. What I really would like is to control my plugins, but I can't, until now. I didn't spend lots of time searching, but the majority of BC owners use it with Fruity loops & PC; there's isn't much info for Mac & DAW.
Another 'downer' are the noisy motorized faders. Maybe a good reason to save your money and buy a more expensive controller like a Euphonix or a Mackie. But for less than 200 bucks, it's worth the money. I typically use it to record fader movements, when I really want to listen, I turn the BCF off..
Setting up is pretty easy: To work with STP, the BCF should be in 'Logic -control' mode. In STP, create a new controller (protocol= Mackie). Input & output should be 'BCF-2000'. In your STP project, 'Automation mode' should be on latch or touch.

  • Midi files made in Finale not working

I have 3 files that aren't exporting to Garageband. I drag and drop them as I always do and then it starts the midi window downloading window from Garage Band and then stops.
I am not putting it in the track.
    I shortened all the names.
I made the end midi instead of mid.
Again nothing seems to make a difference. It won't take it.
I have never had this trouble but today I can't make it work. I even made the names really short.
    look.alto.midi
This is how long my names are now that I shortened them. Nothing seems to make a difference. HELP!

I don't have Quick Time Pro. I only have Quick Time player and I can get the player to play the files but I can't export anything. Any other ideas?

  • My screen has marks made by the keyboard when closed. Possible design flaw (mid 2012 macbook pro retina)

My screen has marks made by the keyboard when closed. I think is because possible desing flaw. Is a macbook pro retina mid 2012. Maybe the secreen is very close to the keyboard when close. It is a soft mark, but I´m sure it´s because the keyborad because is the same shape.
    Thank you

Whether they replace just the screen, a subassembly, the whole top half of the computer, or the entire computer is entirely up to them, as is whether they replace with new or refurbished parts.
I would make sure I had at least one full backup of everything on my computer before taking it in. Two would be even better. Even if they don't replace the entire computer, something could happen during installation and testing of new parts.
Back when people really cared about the manufacturer of their screen (in the beginning of the Retina models, when one manufacturer had a bad run of screens), instructions for using Terminal commands to determine which you had circulated. I didn't bother to keep a copy of the one I used. A web search for "retina screen manufacturer" (without the quotes) should reveal as top hits several sites with very similar instructions.

  • I have a MacBook Pro made in mid 2009.  A fully recharged battery dies in about 2 hours.  Is this a systems issue or do I have to replace the battery.  The battery has about 100 cycles on it.

I have a MacBook Pro made in mid 2009.  A fully recharged battery dies in about 2 hours.  Is this a systems issue or do I have to replace the battery?  The battery has about 100 cycles on it.

    Try a SMC reset:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If this is an original battery, even with a low cycle count, it is old and probably should be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • I can't here the recording I made with a midi/USB controller.

I'm have problems with logic pro 9.1.8 sometimes with the midi/usb controller. I just recorded a track with the midi/usb controller which i just heard myself record it but now that I'm done with the recording I cant here any of the USB/midi controller tracks that I just made.  So now I cant here all the tracks playing at once.  I can only hear the files that I dragged in from  itunes.  What am I doing wrong?

Are the midi regions that you recorded showing up? Also, have you checked if anything is accidentally soloed or muted?

  • My Mid 2007 24" iMac has been a bit laggy on Yosemite and getting worse every day, so I went to the Apple Support pages on Apples website looking for help and thought I'd found some. This is what I did and it made everything 100 times worse :(

So here is what I found and what I did to try to alleviate the RAM eating upgrade named Yosemite. This guy has helped quite a few people, you can read all the comments and I gave it several tries this morning.

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.
Guide of how to access Safe Mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again. You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.
More info about PRAM: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Voila, reconnect your external displays and enjoy your system.

I hope to hear from anyone even to knock me in the head, lol. Thanks in advance and I'll be around trying to figure this out.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Yosemite made my MacBook Pro (Mid-2012) EXTREMELY slow

Yosemite has really gummed up my system. I'm reluctant to do a clean install, but I will if absolutely necessary.
This is what Etrecheck says. Any thought will be repaid by my eternal gratitude.
    Problem description:

  • Mountain Lion 1.8.2 update made my dual monitor stop working on Mac Pro mid 2012

Just done Apple's update for Mac OS X Mountain Lion to 1.8.2 and after rebooting my dual monitor stopped working.
If I go on preferences -> Displays it shows me only one of my two monitors, even if I invert the connections the 2nd monitor doesn't shows up and there seems no way to enable it again.
    Any suggestion?
P.S. I already tried to set from "Best for display" to "Scaled", but after rebooting Mountain Lion 1.8.2 reset it to "Best for display"

    Ok,
did some extra test here, but first of all my configuration:
Mac Pro (Mid 2012) with ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB.
2 LCD 24" Wide-screen (1st monitor Hyundai W240D and 2nd Monitor HP w2448hc), both LCD worked perfectly until reboot after installing OS X 1.8.2
After reboot only the 1st monitor wored fine, the 2nd not even listed, so tried to invert cable connections on the 2 miniports on the ATI video card, but nothing changed, still only the 1st monitor working.
Did a second test, disconnected the 1st monitor and connected ONLY the 2nd and now the second works fine.
Tried to connect 2nd monitor on a different miniport, and i still works fine.
Updated my MacBook Pro to 1.8.2 (it as an nVidia card) and connected my 2nd monitor to it and everything works fine, both the laptop LCD and my HP LCD are working fine.
So it looks like Apple screwed up the ATI driver on the latest 1.8.2, now only ONE miniport is active.
To all users with the same Mac Pro configuration: hold to update to Mountain Lion 1.8.2 until Apple fix this driver issue.
More info are on the Console output, so will have to contact Apple on-line support to signal this bug.

  • Modifying instrument of a pre-made MIDI file

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a MIDI file to be edited so that it plays on a different instrument, as the soundbank on the computer that I received it from is different to the one I have now. Is it possible to edit the file so that it plays on a different instrument permanently, or will I have to do it on the go as I play it back on the synthesizer (via the appropriate patch)?
    Thank you.

I vanquished it myself! Woop woop.

  • Recording extra bits into MIDI regions DRIVES ME MAD - please help!

I hate Logic sometimes. (Logic Pro 8)
I record a simple part (region) using an AU plugin - a basic beat let's say. I play it in with a keyboard.
It's a 2 bar region and I then want to add a cymbal into the region while in 'piano roll' view (so I can see where to add it) - so I hit record and 1) my view of what's already been recorded goes blank and 2) Logic creates a NEW region!
Is there not a way that when in Piano Roll view - if you want to record extra MIDI stuff into a region - you can start recording and can still see what you already recorded in that region, and for your new recording to AUTOMATICALLY merge in with the existing region?
This drives me crazy and i've never figured it out - and it really stands in the way of me actuallly getting anywhere with Logic. I just want a region to stay as ONE region which I can keep adding bits to without creating loads of regions and I'd really like to be able to SEE what's already there as I add bits!
    Can anyone help pls?

thanks a lot guys - BUT is there also a way for me to see the MIDI notes i record AS I actually play them in? (rather than when the looped area cycles round again) This happens in Reason and most other music apps - just annoys me it doesn't in Logic!
Don't know why that doesn't happen, I imagine it's the way Logic holds incoming MIDI data in a buffer instead of committing to a note value, but I don't know. Just tried the same thing in OEM version of CubaseLE4 and played notes became visible in real time.

  • Should the USB MIDI connection be made directly for less latency?

My main keyboard controller is a Roland RD700SX. It's currently connected via a Belkin 7 port USB hub. Do you think this introduces latency? Should it be connected directly to the Mac? Are there any connectivity issues that I'm not aware of? I'm not sure if the latency has always been there and now I'm just more sensitive to it (after a few years of producing) or if it's something that I've introduced to my system (in my endless studio-configuration reorganizations).

Back in the days where we had HUB's in computer networks, these things slowed the data flow down drastically. A HUB is directing only one data packet at a time, so if two ports are sending data, the HUB can redirect some data packets from one port, then from the second, back to the first one, and so on...
What I've learned from the guys here is that also USB isn't working in duplex (read and write at the same time), but as a serial device (read then write and vise verse); meaning that if you also have other periferials connected to your HUB (like an external hard drive), data going to these can hinder the data your MIDI controller is trying to send.
But of course the best way to find out what is causing the problem, is plugging your controller directly into your USB-port. If this works fine, then you try it alone through your HUB. If this again works fine, start pluging one item at a time into the HUB, seeing if any of these introduce the latency problem in Logic.

  • Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

  • I'm trying to edit a MIDI piano part by clicking the editors button at the top left to see a magnified view of the notes on the grid. However, I don't see any of the notes-just a blank grid. I made sure I highlighted and selected the right track; nothing.

This is the first time this has ever happened- maybe I accidentally clicked something to make them disappear? Its just weird because even when I select a track and it is highlighted, it still says that no regions were ever selected.

  • Sync a new HD with a previously made SmartPreviews album (the first HD crapped out mid edits)

    Here's what happened.
I had all of my images on HD1 and backed them up on HD2.
I used HD1 to make a smart previews album so that I didn't have to take HD1 with me on travel.
When I returned home, I learned that HD1 was corrupt.
I plugged in HD2 but LR never prompted me to find the images (since it assumed I was just working with the smart preview album)
When I wen to export (I export to Smug Mug), the images were small - 2.5MB vs the usual 15-20MB
After some troubleshooting, I realized it was because LR never synced with the new HD
I can manually sync each photo with the new location on HD2, but I have 1000+photos and that sounds awful
Any suggestions for bulk syncing the images with HD2?
